Ambassador for the Championships Dame Kelly Holmes Inspires our Next Generation of Athletes Some of the country’s most promising young athletes descend on Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium this weekend for the Aviva English Schools Track and Field Championships. Over the course of the two days, hundreds of athletes from all over England will represent their home counties and compete for medal glory at the Grand Prix style event – the pinnacle of grassroots athletics, and the largest schools athletics competition in the country, Some of the greatest names in British athletics, including Jonathan Edwards, Lord Sebastian Coe and Dame Kelly Holmes, all tasted early success as youngsters at the English Schools – as well as many current members of the Aviva GB & NI Team, including Olympic Silver medallist Phillips Idowu, Olympic Gold medallist Mark Lewis-Francis, and Commonwealth Gold and Olympic Bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton. Dame Kelly Holmes will also be attending this year’s event as Ambassador of the Championships. The double Olympic Champion has fond memories from her days participating in the English Schools, and credits it with providing her the confidence and encouragement she needed to become an elite athlete and Olympic Champion – and believes the competition will continue unearthing more of our future champions.
