Wannon Labor candidate Fiona Mackenzie outlines her vision for the electorate.
Transcript
00:00Hello, Fiona Mackenzie. I am standing as the Labor candidate for Wannan.
00:15Wannan's roads, I'm really pleased to be seeing the Labor government actually improving the roads throughout Wannan.
00:25I know because I travel all the roads, of course, and with federal funding we've been able to improve the highways.
00:35The state is looking after more of their roads, which is the freeways and other roads that people are perhaps not aware that they're state roads.
00:45And also they're putting in more funds into the Black Spot program, which is very necessary where there's real issues with problems, accidents and so on.
00:57And also the Safer Roads program. And as of last year, 1st of July, the SLRIP program, which is really an investment program to make sure that more infrastructure is going into the roads of the councils.
01:15So the six councils in the Wannan area are actually receiving more funding to help with the roads there too.
01:25Well, I'm really, really pleased to be seeing that Labor, that's the focus for this turning point election.
01:31And I must say, as a pensioner, I'm also interested in making sure the cost of living is viable.
01:38And very, very pleased to be seeing that they have the watchdog in the supermarket.
01:44They're helping with energy bills, like directly.
01:47So that is helping us as well.
01:50So going into every house, they've got tax reductions for people.
01:56So every taxpayer now is paying less.
01:59So there's that, that in the short term and the long term, we have great investment in education.
02:05And as a retired teacher, I'm still, however, involved in education and making sure that it is the best for future generations.
02:15And thrilled to be seeing that there's now free TAFE courses and that people who go on to tertiary studies now have a 20% drop in their HEX fees as well.
02:27So there's, there's great investment in that.
02:30And also, of course, in childcare, offering that three days free childcare to people, kindergarten, the kindergarten.
02:40And seeing also in Warrnambool, the fact that two new government childcare centres are going up, which is really answering that need, that call for more childcare.
02:51And they're doing it.
02:52And I've, I've been to them and it's so exciting because it's, you know, looking at like 270 places immediately in, in a very short term in office.
03:02Very, very good and very pertinent question.
03:07I've actually read through the Royal Commission about aged care and so pleased to have now aged care improving with more staffing, people being paid higher wages.
03:21So that, when it comes to nurses and health providers and health carers.
03:26And of course, you have that also backed by Medicare, NDIS and so on being there as well in the background.
03:34But I am very aware of the aged care sector having had my mother in care before the Labour government.
03:41Um, and I'm very, very pleased to see the positive changes that have taken place.
03:48Well, I've spoken about this before and I, I actually advocate for it.
03:53Um, it's Labour policy to be putting in the offshore wind farms.
03:57And in truth, look at it, it would provide the energy we need, that self-sufficiency that we, we need also in, in this, um, world.
04:08And it would power up manufacturing again and enable it to be, um, providing more jobs for people, more job security.
04:19Um, not only just in the energy sector, but it will mean that we will transition to renewables very quickly.
04:26We are transitioning out of fossil fuels and then moving into that.
04:30And that will enable us to basically light up the whole of Australia plus industry.
04:35And, of course, Victoria will also have the advantage of the SECV.
04:40So that's fantastic.
04:41Re-establishing, once again, getting back to the cost of living.
04:44That will reduce our energy bills as well.
04:52Thank you so much for coming from your news.
04:53Thank you!
