Part 5 of 6 of the children's drama. Billy's dad has unintentionally destroyed the magical watch trying to fix it, but reporter Trevor Trotman is uninterested in that. What he wants to know from Billy is how Ginger Gahagan ended up on the school roof. That all started it seems when Mr Webb decided to buy Billy a bike for his birthday, but when the chain breaks on Billy's bike he decides to get it repaired at the Bike Shop. But the ever so helpful repair man there has made some unusual alterations to the bike that Billy soon discovers, and it isn't long before it attracts the attention of school bully Ginger Gahagan, who sets his sights upon stealing it.

00:00Not bad, is it? Press the button once and you get the date.
00:04See? Twice and you can set the alarm call. Good, eh?
00:08I wonder what happens if you press it three times.
00:18What's happening? Stop! Stop!
00:21Oh, it's lovely, Billy. Is this your prize?
00:32You went back in time.
00:34Yeah, I could go backwards or forwards just by pressing the button.
00:38It's no good looking at me like that, Fred.
00:41Look, the thing is, I could use the watch to help Mum and Dad.
00:45You know how at the dog track or horse races, the races only last a few minutes,
00:49so if I used to watch, I could find out who the winner was,
00:52Dad could put a bet on and he'd win.
00:54And if he kept doing it, he'd be a millionaire or something.
01:04What you, Bill?
01:06I thought I'd have a butcher's at this watch.
01:08You did say it was gaining a bit, didn't you?
01:19Oh, Dad! You don't know what you've done!
01:32It's all right, son. It's all right.
01:34Jack of all trades, ain't I?
01:35I'll soon have it put back together again.
01:37But it might... I mean, it might only tell a time.
01:40Well, that's the general idea, innit?
01:42And did your Dad mend it?
01:46Well, he put it back together again.
01:47But did it still take you back and forward in time?
01:50No. I wasn't really sorry, though.
01:52It's good fun, and that, but it was like I couldn't stop using it.
01:56It was as if it had some sort of power over me.
02:00Trouble was, all that stuff in the watch made me forget about other things,
02:03like my story project.
02:06Every time I tried to get on with it, something funny happened.
02:08And the last thing I wanted was more trouble with Mrs. Peacewood.
02:12I had a lot on my mind.
02:13See, love for that matter.
02:14Look, don't worry. I told you before, I'll help you with your project.
02:18But first, tell me about the bike.
02:21Oh, yeah. The bike.
02:24I'd always wanted a bike.
02:26All my mates had them.
02:27It was my birthday, too.
02:29But I knew I wouldn't get one, cos they cost a packet.
02:31Didn't stop me thinking about it, though.
02:36How good do you eat, Billy?
02:37What?
02:38Story project.
02:41No problem, Mrs. Peacewood.
02:42Oh, that's good.
02:43See you tomorrow, then.
02:45Bye.
02:49I thought we'd have a change from bacon sandwiches tonight.
02:53After all, it is his birthday.
02:54Good idea, Mum.
02:55What are we having, then?
02:56Bacon flan.
02:58Oh, right.
03:00What about this, then?
03:01Oh, it's lovely.
03:04Oh, I don't know.
03:05You've both grown up so quick.
03:07Look at our Billy.
03:08I'm sure when I was his age, I was only eight.
03:11We need some candles on that.
03:13Look in the drawer.
03:14OK, Mum.
03:17Yadda!
03:17What do you think of it?
03:20Oh, you've got it.
03:22Wow.
03:22It's lovely.
03:23How much was it?
03:24Well, too much, really.
03:26I shall have to do a bit of overtime.
03:28I got it from a bloke at work.
03:29But do you think he'll like it?
03:30Oh, I should hope so.
03:31He's been on about a bike for ages.
03:33Yeah, a lick of paint, few transfers.
03:35That'll look great.
03:36There he is.
03:37Quick, hide it.
03:38Put the cloth over it.
03:40Ooh.
03:45Happy birthday to you.
03:48Happy birthday to you.
03:51Happy birthday, dear Billy.
03:54Happy birthday to you.
03:57Happy birthday, Billy.
03:58That's for me.
04:03Oh, great.
04:04It's just what I wanted.
04:05It's all right.
04:06Please don't play at five in the morning.
04:10What's that, Mum?
04:11I was just remembering when Billy was born.
04:15He was beautiful.
04:17All bald and pink.
04:19The nurses at the hospital wanted to take him home with them.
04:23Oh, Mum.
04:24And, of course, there are times we all wish they had taken him.
04:27Ha, ha.
04:29Here you are, son.
04:31Happy birthday.
04:32A bike?
04:33Is that for me?
04:34No, no.
04:35It's for Fred.
04:36But you can ride on the crossbar.
04:38Of course it's for you.
04:38Who else?
04:40Oh, it's brilliant.
04:41Well, don't stand there looking at it.
04:43Get on.
04:43Yeah.
04:45Yes.
04:46Oh, what?
04:48The old professional.
04:49Here we go.
04:49That's it, me, son.
04:51Round you.
04:51Listen, come outside.
04:53You can try it out, dear.
04:54Well, there's a car.
04:55Go, Les.
04:56Find the cat.
04:57Oh.
04:58Why are you out now?
04:59Oh.
05:00So you've got a bike after all, then?
05:01Yeah.
05:02It was ace.
05:03King of the road, eh?
05:04Well, not quite.
05:05Dad said I'd like to get some training first.
05:07Training?
05:08What sort of training?
05:09Well, this policeman decided to come to the school to do road safety lessons.
05:12So I thought I'd join him.
05:13Right, then.
05:15Lesson number one.
05:16Starting off on your bicycle.
05:18Now, let's say you're on a busy road.
05:22Well, don't be shy, lads.
05:25Come and join us.
05:27You might surprise yourselves and learn something.
05:30Yeah, they can.
05:31Well, come on.
05:31I'm waiting.
05:40All right.
05:41Let's say you're on a busy road and you're just about to start cycling.
05:45So what do you do?
05:47Hmm?
05:47You, lad.
05:49Yes, you.
05:50Give us a demonstration of how you'd start off on your bicycle.
05:54Remember now, there are three very important things you must do before you start off.
05:59Well, come on, lad.
06:00Get on with it.
06:07Oh, yes, yes.
06:08Absolutely brilliant.
06:09That was mind-bogglingly pathetic.
06:12No signal.
06:13No looking behind you.
06:14No slow start.
06:16In fact, a more pathetic display of bicycle riding I've yet to witness.
06:20Think, lad.
06:21Think.
06:22Come on.
06:23Get back to your place.
06:26Excuse me, sir.
06:27I've got to go home now.
06:29I've got to do my paper around.
06:31All right, lad.
06:32Come on, then.
06:32Buzz off.
06:33And remember, be careful out there.
06:37Now, what you have to remember is, no matter how good you think you are,
06:41there's always some nutter out there who's a menace to others on the road.
06:46Say to you, I've just had a road safety less than I have.
06:53Yes, well, as I was saying, there's always some person who's a menace to others and shouldn't
06:59be allowed out.
07:01Now, let's say you're cycling along, very careful-like, and all of a sudden, someone
07:08steps off the pavement in front of you.
07:10Now, what do you do?
07:10Hmm?
07:11Yes, you.
07:11You, lad.
07:12What would you do?
07:12Uh, I'll get off my bike and thump him.
07:16Oh, that's very sensible, lad.
07:17Any more brains and you'd be a brillo pad.
07:20Yes.
07:20I'd put on your brakes, sir.
07:22Very good.
07:23You put on your brakes.
07:24So, what do you always have to make sure of?
07:27That you've got good brakes, sir.
07:28That's right.
07:29That you've got good brakes.
07:31Well, I'm glad something seems to be getting through.
07:33Now, remember, every week, check that your brakes are safe.
07:38They could save your life, and someone else's.
07:42Right.
07:43Well, let's see how good you are on the highway code.
07:46Now, can anyone tell me what this means?
07:48Hmm?
07:49Yeah.
07:50You, lad.
07:51Uh.
07:52I know.
07:53Low-flying aircraft.
07:55Very good.
07:57Now, this one?
07:58I know, sir.
07:59It means no parachuting here.
08:00A man opening an umbrella.
08:02It means roadwork, stupid.
08:04Very good.
08:05Now, pay attention.
08:06This one?
08:09I know.
08:10You're only allowed to ride on a gate.
08:12This one means there's a level crossing coming up, right?
08:15Coming up where, sir?
08:16Oh.
08:18We really enjoyed the road safely, but it seemed the policeman wasn't that struck on us.
08:23Right, class four.
08:25Can I have your attention, please, before we begin work?
08:30PC Griffiths has just telephoned the school, and I must say he sounded very worried.
08:35He wanted me to assure him that when he comes to school again today, he will have your full
08:41cooperation.
08:43We all really enjoyed it, Mrs. Peasgood, didn't we?
08:46Yeah.
08:47Oh, I'm sure you did, Nigel.
08:48That is not the point.
08:50Anyway, he seemed really tough.
08:52Everyone has their breaking point, Winston.
08:54The point is, he was a guest in our school, and he was here to help you.
08:59So after school today, there won't be any problems, will there?
09:04No, Mrs. Peasgood.
09:06Now, this is a T-junction.
09:13Right, and I want you lot to all line up along here.
09:16Come on.
09:17Line up along here.
09:18Right.
09:18Now, you're going to be coming along here, down this way, to the main road where you stop,
09:25and then you're going to turn right.
09:27But, you do know your right from your left, I take it?
09:30Yes, sir.
09:32Well, that's a start, I suppose.
09:34All right.
09:34I shall stand here in the middle of the road.
09:37All right, then.
09:38Let's have a go.
09:39Come on, then.
09:41Now, now, now.
09:42Not all up.
09:43You dozy one, Max.
09:45Back.
09:45Go on, back, back.
09:46Come on, back in the line.
09:48Right.
09:49You, lad.
09:50You and the anorak.
09:51You go first.
09:51Come on, then.
09:53Right.
09:53Now, look behind you.
09:54A good signal right, and move slowly to the centre of the road.
09:59Proceed along the broken lines on your side of the road.
10:02Coming up to the stop line, and stop.
10:05Look right.
10:06Look left.
10:07Look right again.
10:08Look behind, and signal right.
10:11And move up across the road.
10:12Look left, and don't cut the corner.
10:14Good, lad.
10:14Right.
10:15Next one.
10:16Look behind you.
10:18Right hand out.
10:20Move into the centre of the road.
10:21A good right hand signal.
10:23Come on, lad.
10:24Get your arm out.
10:25Look like a dying duck in a thunderstorm.
10:27Now, right.
10:27Now, stop.
10:28You're supposed to stop here.
10:30Right.
10:31Next one.
10:32Right.
10:32Look behind you.
10:34And again, a good clear signal.
10:36Put your hand out.
10:37Come on.
10:37You're going too fast, lad.
10:39Put your brakes on.
10:39Put your brakes on.
10:44You know the certificates they give you to show that your bicycle is safe?
10:47Yeah.
10:48Well, you're not getting one.
10:50In fact, this bicycle is off the road until you get those brakes fixed.
10:55And until you learn to ride it properly.
10:58Excuse me, sir.
10:59Oh, now what is it?
11:00I think there's something wrong with Billy's bike.
11:02The chain snacks.
11:05Oh, yes.
11:06Looks like you need a new one of those.
11:08I only just got it.
11:10Look, I tell you what, lad.
11:11I'll give you a lift down the bike shop.
11:13I don't think my nerves can take much more of this lot anyway.
11:15Come on.
11:16I bet he didn't come back to your school in R, eh?
11:22No.
11:23He said it was difficult enough being a policeman.
11:25But after our slot, he wouldn't be a teacher for a million pounds.
11:28No, me neither.
11:29He was all right, lad.
11:30Did he take you to the bike shop?
11:32Yeah.
11:32It felt really funny being driven around in the police car.
11:35I kept wondering what mum and dad would think if they saw me in it.
11:39But he took me all the way to the shop.
11:40Oh, what can I do for you?
11:55A train bus.
11:56I only just got it, Arnold.
11:57Really?
11:58Mm.
11:58It's for my birthday.
11:59Ah.
12:00Congratulations.
12:01Thanks.
12:02All right.
12:03Let's have a deco.
12:04Keep your fit, these, Will.
12:06Not like cars.
12:08You know what happened to car drivers, don't you?
12:10No.
12:10What?
12:11Well, in about 50 years' time, they'll have no legs.
12:14They'll just drop off through lack of use.
12:17I reckon some people think the only reason they've got legs is to have something to put
12:19up on the sofa when they're watching the telly.
12:21Yeah.
12:23Right, then.
12:23This'll take about, oh, half an hour, say.
12:27Get you another chain.
12:28Check it over for you, Arnold.
12:29All right.
12:30Thanks a lot.
12:31I'll see you later.
12:32All right.
12:33See you.
12:34Well, half an hour later, I went back again.
12:40Oh, hello.
12:44Nearly ready.
12:46It's worth taking care of, this is, you know.
12:48See some kids, chucking them around the streets, let them fall over.
12:52Yeah.
12:52On a car trip.
12:53Yeah.
12:53He looked like the sort of lad who would.
12:55Let's give it a squirt of oil.
12:58I'll put you on a new chain.
13:00And I've adjusted the steering.
13:02Can't give you better control.
13:04Why?
13:04Give their bike a bit more zip, too.
13:07Yeah, well, see only BMX championships on this.
13:10Now it's all fixed.
13:11Sam, I hope.
13:12How much for I owe you?
13:13Ah, £3.95 for the chain.
13:17Lucky I just had a berth, Dan.
13:18Yeah.
13:20There you go.
13:22Thanks a lot.
13:22My pleasure.
13:23See you.
13:26You certainly will.
13:27It was great having the bike back again.
13:38It seemed to go a lot better, too.
13:40Really smooth.
13:42Almost as if I didn't have to pedal.
13:52I didn't like the look of this at all.
13:54I was thinking of turning around and going home.
13:56Well, something really weird happened.
14:04Did you just see that?
14:06Yeah.
14:07Did I just see that?
14:10Yeah.
14:11How did he do it?
14:12Well, you could ask him, Ginge.
14:14Ginger Gahagan don't ask people things.
14:16He tells them.
14:17Yeah.
14:18You tell them all right, Ginge.
14:19So, what are you going to tell him?
14:24I'll have to think about it.
14:25You're good at that, Ginge.
14:27Thinking.
14:28It was dead weird, though, wasn't it?
14:30Maybe it didn't really happen.
14:32Course it happened, you div.
14:33We saw it, didn't we?
14:35Yeah.
14:36Well, then what's you on about?
14:37Don't know, Ginge.
14:39I'll tell you one thing, though.
14:41What's that, Ginge?
14:42I want that bike.
14:46Yeah.
14:47Oh, my God.
15:01Come on, man.
15:05Fire is ready.
15:06Fire is ready.
15:07Fire is ready.
15:08Get away.
15:09Get in there.
15:09Over the second.
15:10It's a little bit.
15:10Oh, my God.
15:11I'm going to be trying to find it.
15:13Go on.
15:14I'm going to be trying to find it.
15:15I'm going to be trying to find it.
15:16There goes Craig, straight out into the lead, headed over the jump center, look at it, there's another one, at the end of the track, from the rear.
15:26There goes Craig, followed by Chris Hyde, in second place there, as they come round, out of the second turn, over the jump,
15:32moving up fast, is that, I don't know, Ryder, starts to move up, catching up on the floor, a big crack at the front, but, moving up fast, is that, I don't know who he is, but he's catching up fast, heading away towards that turn, down, he's in that corner.
15:50New Ryder, he only comes round, on the inside, swoops up on the inside of Craig, a big crack at the front.
15:55And now, we interrupt our swimming coverage to go over to the under-16 BMX Championship, where an unexpected win has caused quite a stir.
16:16That's right, Des, an amazing win here this afternoon, I believe it to be a world record, and here with me now is our brand new BMX Champion,
16:24who I believe wasn't even an official competitor, is that right?
16:27What? Oh, yeah, I suppose so.
16:32Good, so tell me a little bit about yourself, who's your trainer?
16:35I ain't got a trainer, I'm not a flipping monkey.
16:38Great, and have you decided yet what you'll be doing with your prize money?
16:42What prize money? Look, I've had enough of this, I'm going home.
16:45No, wait, come back! What's your name?
16:49Well, I'm sorry, we seem to have lost our new champion there, so I'll hand you back to the studio.
16:53Did you see...
16:54Well, thank you, Rob, a surprise winner.
16:56Was it?
16:56The mystery rider, obviously a very talented guy.
16:58No, it couldn't have been.
17:00Well, if we do have any more information on that young man's identity, we'll bring it to you later in the programme.
17:05Amazing! A supersonic bike!
17:08I don't know about amazing, I was flipping terrified.
17:11Yeah, but with a bike like that, you could go anywhere, do anything!
17:14I wonder what gave it all its power.
17:17I don't know. It just sort of did it on its own.
17:21Did you notice anything odd about it?
17:23No, nothing.
17:25Strange. So, did you try it again?
17:28Well, I was a bit scared of riding it after that, so the next day I wheeled it to school.
17:33I decided that I was going to take it back to that flipping bike shop, and asked the boat to look at it again.
17:43Hey, Billy, was that you on the telly last night?
17:45Would you believe me if I said it was?
17:48No.
17:49Well, that's all right, then.
17:50What are you doing, Ginge?
18:08What's it look like I'm doing?
18:10I'm peeling a banana.
18:12No, you ain't.
18:14Look, like I said, I want this bike.
18:16But it's got a lock on it, Ginge.
18:18Yes, I know that.
18:20That's why I came prepared.
18:23Clever, eh?
18:24Not half.
18:26What's it for?
18:27Watch this.
18:36Well, it always works on the telly.
18:38It'd help if you had a key.
18:39Yeah, but I ain't got one, have I?
18:41No, I have.
18:43Well, where'd you get that?
18:44Well, the lock's the same as the one on my bike.
18:47Well, why didn't you say before?
18:49Well, you didn't ask, Ginge.
18:50Let me sit here.
18:53Right.
18:54Here we go.
18:58Right.
18:58Hold that.
19:01Right.
19:02Watch this.
19:05Come on, Ginge.
19:06Come on, Ginge.
19:06Come on, Ginge.
19:08Yeah, go on, Ginge.
19:09Yeah, go on, Ginge.
19:11Here we go.
19:12Here we go.
19:13Three times round and we'll go cruising.
19:16Yeah, go on, Ginge.
19:17Yeah, go on, Ginge.
19:18Go on, twice round.
19:20Right.
19:21Yeah, go on, Ginge.
19:22Here we go.
19:23Here we go.
19:24Here we go.
19:25Come on, Ginge.
19:26Spear.
19:27Oh, dear.
19:37Oh, dear.
19:42Oh.
19:44Oh.
19:47Oh.
19:49Oh.
19:49Oh, dear.
19:50So that's how Ginger got on the roof. It's an incredible story, all right, but it still
20:05doesn't explain why it all happened.
20:08No. I don't understand it. All I know is that I want it to stop.
20:11Yeah, but you can only stop something when you know what's causing it.
20:14Well, I've told you all I know. And why do things happen to me? Why can't everything
20:18just be normal? Well, that's what we've got to try and work out.
20:21Well, you're the ace reporter. You do it.
20:24Did you go back to the bike shop? Yeah, on the way to school. Same as the chip shop.
20:29There's a different bloke there. Really? You know, there's probably a clue to all this
20:33staring us right in the face. The facts are, a lot of strange things have happened to you.
20:39Now, was there anything unusual about the man in the bike shop or the man in the chip shop?
20:44No. They don't know any blokes, really.
20:45It doesn't make sense. Well, if it don't make sense, there's no point in going on about it,
20:50is there? Might as well talk about what we said we would.
20:53What's that? My story project, of course. You said you'd help.
20:56All right. Where's the book?
20:59Here it is.
21:02Oh, I know this one.
21:04Do you?
21:05Yeah. I used to read it to my little brother. It was his favourite book.
21:08Great. You can do my story project for me now. What's it about?
21:11Well, it's all about this...
21:14Are you all right?
21:18This is it!
21:19What?
21:20The answer!
21:22I've got it!
21:23Bye.
21:24Bye.
21:24Bye.
21:27Bye.
21:28Bye.
21:31Bye.
21:48Bye.
