Wiggy doesn't think drafting OL will help Drake Maye. Would LSU's Will Campbell be a "wasted pick"? Should #Patriots go Jeanty/Warren instead?
Transcript
00:00So only two sleeps away, Wiggy, from the draft.
00:03And I was kind of thinking about this.
00:06I did a little research, and Chime and I were probably on the same page with this,
00:12but I'm even a step further.
00:13I don't think drafting a tackle is going to help Drake May, an offensive lineman.
00:20Because let me tell you why.
00:22I think it's more valuable to draft a positional player that he will actually,
00:27especially with the fourth overall pick or if you trade down to the seventh overall pick
00:33or whatever it is, if you're picking in the top ten,
00:35I think it's more valuable to draft a positional player that a rookie quarterback
00:40will get more help from than an offensive lineman.
00:44You look at last year, for example, offensive lineman Joe Walt went to the Chargers.
00:49One of the biggest issues that the Chargers had, they had an issue with their passing game.
00:54A couple years ago, the Arizona Cardinals took an offensive lineman in the top ten.
01:00What did they do last year?
01:01They went out and got Marvin Harrison.
01:03So if you're the New England Patriots and you're sitting there at number four,
01:07whether you want to go Ashton Genthy, I want to go because I think he's the best player available.
01:14I want to go Tyler Warren.
01:16You look at what the Raiders were last year.
01:18Nothing until they got Brock Bowers tight end from the University of Georgia
01:23and what he was ultimately able to do.
01:25If you just look, here are just some names from the 2023.
01:32No, I'm going to go to the 2024 draft.
01:34I'm sorry, Greg.
01:35Here are just some names, right?
01:36So when you think about Malik Neighbors, wide receiver, New York Giants,
01:40and what he was able to do for that type of team.
01:45I just feel like if you're the New England Patriots,
01:50your biggest need right now is offensive skill position.
01:55An offensive lineman does not help Drake May when you waste the top ten pick on him.
02:02The offensive line has been an issue for quite some time, though.
02:09But when it comes to where Drake ranked when it comes to the amount of times he was sacked last year,
02:13like, yeah, he was under pressure some, but overall he was sacked 34 times in the season.
02:19And that O-line was terrible.
02:21Yeah, and that's not a lot.
02:22So that's a guy that was able to get out of problem situations.
02:25So adding in, I'm with Wiggy.
02:27So it's a wasted pick?
02:29I think it would be.
02:30Will Campbell, in your mind, is a wasted pick at number four.
02:32Yeah, look at, this is the 2020, and this is where I want to go.
02:35This is the 2023 draft.
02:37Pick 20, 21, 22, and 23.
02:41Four wide receivers back-to-back.
02:44Jackson, Smith, and Jigba.
02:46We know what he does out in Seattle.
02:47Really good wide receiver.
02:50Quinton Johnson from the Chargers.
02:53Zay Flowers, BC, and what he was able to do for the Baltimore Ravens.
02:59And 23, Jordan Addison for the Minnesota Vikings.
03:02And he's been relatively good for them.
03:05I know he's dealt with some injuries.
03:06I just look at, if you have the fourth overall pick,
03:10Will Campbell might be good.
03:12And I'm not saying he won't be good.
03:13But if you hit on Tyler Warren, Ashton Gentry.
03:18I know Shime has Tetaro and McMillan.
03:22If you hit on one of those guys at number four,
03:26Drake May will get a lot more from them than he would from hitting on Will Campbell.
03:32978 text on the Subaru of New England text line.
03:35Is Wiggy high this morning?
03:37No, I'm not high.
03:37Yes, yes.
03:38The answer is always yes.
03:40But an offensive line isn't going to help a second-year quarterback,
03:44or any quarterback for that matter, LOL.
03:46When you're in a position right now where you have the fourth overall pick,
03:50you can get an offensive lineman in the second round.
03:54Even if you move down, you could get two offensive linemen in the second round.
03:58If you hit on your top ten pick who's a skilled player,
04:03that player is going to help out a lot more than you wasted.
04:07Because let's say you do draft Will Campbell, and he's really good.
04:11And who's Drake May throwing to him?
04:15Also, by the way, that 34-sack number has to be adjusted
04:19because he only played – what did he play, 10 games?
04:22Drake May.
04:23No, did he play 10 games?
04:26All right, so even if – I bet if you added it up,
04:30even with Jacoby Myers, if you added up where they were in sacks,
04:35I bet they weren't the worst team in the NFL.
04:38I probably bet they were middle of the pack, maybe 17.
04:40The point that I'm trying to say is that even if Will Campbell's good,
04:47who's Drake May throwing the football to?
04:50Well, you're hoping that Steph Diggs is Steph Diggs, right?
04:54Yeah, but he has to be healthy.
04:55He has to be healthy.
04:56He's going to be healthy for week one.
04:57Yeah, but that's – Greg, that's running routes against the L.
05:00We don't know that.
05:01We know he's – and Chime brings up a great point.
05:03We know he's not going to be ready come week one.
05:05So you probably won't see Steph Diggs to what, week six, seven, or eight?
05:08If you hit – and I know Chime's an Ashton Genthy guy,
05:13but if you hit on a guy like Ashton Genthy,
05:15it turns out to be like a B. John Robinson.
05:19And I'm seeing that he played in 13.
05:21So he started 12 games, played in 13.
05:25Right, but I guarantee if you looked at collectively the number of sacks
05:29that the Patriots O-line gave up all season long,
05:31I bet that's probably 17, 18, 19, somewhere in that area.
05:36And I'm not saying Will Campbell's not going to be good.
05:39I just know from being in the NFL and seeing it that if you get a skill player
05:47to be elite and you have an elite offensive lineman,
05:50that skill player usually at the end of the day is more valuable in the sense
05:56of helping you win games than that tackle is.
05:59Normally I would be totally against Wiggy here because I do believe
06:03that the trenches matter, but this draft class is different.
06:07Like if Joe Alt was on the board, I would say take Joe Alt, number four,
06:11and don't even hesitate.
06:12But because it's Will Campbell, I just – I don't feel that way about Campbell.
06:16I don't think Campbell's worth a top five pick.
06:18I just don't.
06:19And I don't think there's any offensive lineman in this draft
06:21that's worth a top five pick.
06:22So in this draft in particular, I think Wiggy's right.
06:25I think getting a skill player, whether it's Ashton Gentry,
06:28Tett McMillan, Tyler Warren.
06:29If you take Gentry, who's blocking for him?
06:31Well, then you take Ozzy Trapillo in the second round of BC.
06:35You take Ariante Urseri out of Minnesota in the second round.
06:38Like there's other guys that I think will be as good as Will Campbell
06:42that you can get late first round, early second round.
06:45And Chime, and I like – I agree with Chime.
06:48Like a Joe Walt, they talked about as being potentially, you know,
06:53like a generational tackle.
06:55All right.
06:56Like Joe Thomas level.
06:57Yeah.
06:57But even with Joe Thomas, when Cleveland drafted him,
07:00he was an unbelievable – you know, Hall of Fame left tackle.
07:04But Cleveland wasn't good because they lacked a skill position.
07:07I feel like if you're going to – and believe me, the trenches matter.
07:12But if you're going to sacrifice a little bit, I would much rather try to draft
07:18an offensive lineman in the second round and shoot for the moon with a skill
07:23player –
07:24At number four.
07:24At number four.
07:25And stay at number four even though this draft quality-wise is not what you
07:30would like – what you wish it was.
07:32Right.
07:33Because if you get Saquon Barkley or Jamar Chase, you're in a way better spot
07:36than if you get, you know, Penny Sewell.
07:38Yeah.
07:38And that's the point that I – and that's why I think Vrabel and the
07:42Patriots, yeah, you're helping – don't get it twisted.
07:47Like, you're helping Drake May, but you could be helping him so much more if you
07:52go, all right, we'll take Genthy, we'll take Tyler Warren because we can always
07:57pick up some linemen in the second round.
07:59This is Nate.
08:00Nate, what's up?
08:03Hey, what's going on, guys?
08:04Hey.
08:05Hey, Wiggy, you're right, bud.
08:06I mean, they're already talking about this draft is just not that draft.
08:10They're talking about Cam Ward.
08:11If he was in last year's draft, he'd be the seventh quarterback coming out.
08:15Like, you have to get that impact guy.
08:18Campbell, they're already talking about if they draft him as a tackle this year,
08:21next year they're going to kick him out to guard like Brandon Coleman with the
08:24commanders.
08:25That's a wasted pick.
08:27You've got to get the top guy in their position, be it Tyler Warren, be it
08:31Austin Denti, or even Jalen Walker.
08:33We need five guys, impact guys, out of this draft.
08:39They've been saying it the whole time.
08:41All these years, we have not hit on our draft picks, except for, like, Drake
08:46Ming, you know what I mean?
08:47But he landed in our lap.
08:49We need impact guys to come in and impact this team.
08:53We have too many holes to fill.
08:55You need that Pro Bowl or All-Pro guy to come in.
08:57When was the last time we had a Pro Bowl or All-Pro guy?
09:01A long time.
09:01It's been a while.
