00:00So often, this season, going to that back five, not always at half-time, but he backed his defenders and his goalkeeper.
00:08Almost to get the clean sheet, almost did it, but he was a little bit nervous for them late on.
00:13The goalkeeper made some really good saves, there was a goal-line clearance that was out of this world in the second half,
00:17but they've been a revelation, and I think for most neutrals, you want to see them sort of keep going towards the end of the season.
00:24You want to see it peter away, and there was that fear going into tonight that that could be the case for Nottingham Forest this season,
00:30but that man there, the goalkeeper, he played a huge part in the second half.
00:34Matt Sells, who you actually had the pleasure of coaching, Will, still at one point.
00:39I did, back in the day in Belgium. Again, great kid, but he's had a massive, massive season,
00:45and he's had that key role to play in the success that they've had so far this season, so yeah.
00:51Was you a big part of that?
00:54Um, no.
00:58He's winning the Golden Glove race at the moment, couldn't get his clean sheet tonight,
01:01but he wasn't too far off, was he, in the end.
01:03And look at all that green, all those green results represent victories,
01:07so only Newcastle had a setback this weekend at the top of the table,
01:11but everyone else victorious.
01:14Forrest climbing back into third place, 60 points now for them,
01:17then Newcastle in fourth, 59, Manchester City, 58,
01:22and then sliding back outside the top five.
01:25Chelsea on 57, Aston Villa on 57, and Villa go to City tomorrow night.
01:31It could all change again.
01:33Tottenham, 16th place, 18 defeats now for the season,
01:44and a record eighth home defeat, the most they've ever had in a 38-game season.
01:51Their Premier League story goes from bad to worse.
01:55They still, of course, have the Europa League,
01:58which all their hopes now lie towards.
02:03Two down in Leicester and Southampton.
02:06Ipswich could be confirmed next weekend.
02:09And today, confirmation that Leeds United have been promoted.
02:15And so, too, Scott Parker's Burnley,
02:18who beat Sheffield United in the 5-30 game.
02:22That confirmed Leeds promotion as well.
02:2494 points for both of them.
02:27Extraordinary seasons.
02:28Sheffield United just missing out,
02:30and they will go through the playoffs.

08:38So, we hit them with all those extra fees, and then, when they arrive...

09:08What a night for Forrest, got off to a flying start, and they managed to hold on to it,
09:18despite a lot of sustained pressure in the second half from Spurs,
09:22chasing away back into the game, but everyone played their part tonight,
09:26including Matt Sells, couldn't quite keep a clean sheet,
09:29but finally he was beaten, but it wasn't decisive in the end.
09:3322 shots to four, 45 touches to four in the opposition box.
09:40In fact, Forrest had one shot and one touch in the opposition box
09:46after their second goal, which came in the 16th minute.
09:49They did a lot of defending after that, and a lot from crosses as well.
09:52Spurs had 51. That is a season high.
09:56They scored with their 48th cross of the night from Richarlison's head.
10:01Let's show you the XG timeline.
10:04Forrest in red.
10:06You can see they got themselves in front early on,
10:09and then there wasn't too much from them in terms of the quality,
10:13the chances they created, or indeed the number.
10:15But look at Spurs. They had that big chance just before half-time,
10:18and then through that second half, lots of little chances
10:22as that XG timeline crept up above two,
10:26and that's where Richarlison's goal came.
10:29But 2-1 was how it finished to Forrest.
10:33That is the crucial stat tonight, and I'm delighted to say
10:36that Matt Sells played a huge part in the Forrest goal,
10:39and he's joining us live now from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
10:43Congratulations, Matt.
10:44We saw those scenes of celebration at the end,
10:46particularly coming after those back-to-back defeats.
10:49Just how important was that victory for your team tonight?
10:54Yeah, of course.
10:55We know after the two last two games, it was important to bounce back.
11:03And yeah, we are really happy with the three points today.
11:06Of course, we are back where we were the whole season.
11:11Did the manager stress to you before the game
11:13the importance of a good start?
11:17Yeah, of course.
11:20You know Tottenham is a strong team with a lot of pressure,
11:24and we knew that they were going to play a lot on the side.
11:26So, yeah, that's why the coach changed also a little bit
11:30the tactic in half-time.
11:32So, yeah, not to let that cross come anymore.
11:35But yeah, in the end, you saw the statistics.
11:38Yeah, it was not easy for us.
11:40But I think we defend well.
11:41We didn't give a lot of chances away.
11:43So, yeah, we defend well.
11:45And I think, yeah, we did well.
11:48Matt, the manager changed the system at half-time,
11:51as you've mentioned there.
11:52And whenever you are in front, at times,
11:54he does change to the back five,
11:55or he will sit off the game a little bit more.
11:58It just shows you've got real confidence in the defenders and yourself,
12:02you know, to keep it tight at the back and keep a clean sheet.
12:06Yeah, look, you know, when he brought Morato in half-time,
12:12we knew that we were going to defend quite a lot second half,
12:16because, yeah, our speed was away with Telanga.
12:19So, yeah, the Gaffa did well to bring in also, I think, Colum.
12:24And, yeah, that's what we tried on the counter-attack,
12:28to create some chances.
12:29I think we didn't create a lot second half.
12:32But, yeah, we defend well.
12:34And, yeah, that's good for us that we took the three points,
12:39or we take the three points back to Swantingham.
12:42Matt, Will still is with us tonight as well.
12:44I should explain to our viewers that he's been part of your incredible story.
12:48He was a part of the coaching staff with you.
12:51Where was it, Will?
12:52In Lyrsa.
12:53Lyrsa.
12:56Matt, how are you, mate?
12:58Yeah, I'm good. Thank you. And you?
13:00I'm good.
13:01Matt, the journey you've been on since Lyrsa back in the day is phenomenal.
13:06And the trajectory that you've taken over the past few years
13:09is even more incredible.
13:10What do you think it's going to take for Forrest to secure that spot
13:13in the Champions League?
13:14What's the final sort of step that you can take?
13:19Yeah, okay, normally, I think with 66 points,
13:24you are quite sure to be in top five.
13:25But I think now this season, I think we'll be a little bit more
13:29because all the teams around us, they are winning.
13:32So, yeah, five games to go and, yeah, we know what to do.
13:37So, yeah, we will see where we can end.
13:41But we played already an amazing season.
13:44We can be proud of what we did already until now.
13:48So, yeah, we just need to continue and give everything, yeah,
13:52to end up there in the top five.
13:54Jamie's talked about the defence and the confidence
13:57that the manager clearly has in the back four or five,
14:00but also the goalkeeper as well.
14:02Matt, a lot of people have been talking about you this year.
14:05Were you always confident that you had the levels
14:08that you have shown week in, week out this season?
14:12Yeah, look, I think I did well the last years in France.
14:17Okay, it's maybe not the people here in England,
14:21they don't follow maybe the French League.
14:23But last year was not easy.
14:25The last day on deadline day to come and play, to stay in the league with Forrest.
14:31But I think now the Gaffa had a whole preparation and he created something really, really good.
14:38Because even last year when I came, I think it was almost quite the same team.
14:42I saw already when I came that we had a lot of quality.
14:46Of course, in the Prem, there are no easy games.
14:49All the teams, they have a lot of quality.
14:51So, yeah, I think we started the season well and maybe, I don't know,
14:55the victory in Liverpool gave us a lot of confidence in the beginning of the season.
15:00And, yeah, okay, then the belief bit by bit is coming.
15:04So, yeah, like I said, we did amazing until now.
15:08But, yeah, the, how do you say, the price will give in the end of the season.
15:15Yeah, absolutely.
15:16And, you know, whenever we speak to a goal scorer, we show them their goals.
15:19So, when we've got a goalkeeper with us who's been on such outstanding form,
15:23we're going to show you a couple of your saves as well, Matt.
15:26And perhaps you can talk us through these moments which kept your team in it.
15:33Yeah, there's a little bit unlucky, a ball on Yates and then, okay,
15:37it's like a one against one.
15:39So, yeah, this was a, yeah, this was a header.
15:41It was a really good save.
15:42And I think it was a big, big moment in the game.
15:46So, yeah, look, I tried to do my part.
15:51It's, yeah, he said that we couldn't keep the zero.
15:55But the most important is that we won this game.
15:59And, yeah, like I said, big three points for us.
16:03Yeah, no clean sheet, but a massive victory.
16:05Congratulations and the FA Cup semi-final to look forward to.
16:08What an extraordinary season.
16:09Thank you so much for speaking to us, Matt.
16:16Yeah, what a star.
16:17Well, so, did you see the talent in him when he was a younger goalkeeper?
16:21Yeah, of course I did.
16:22No, he's always been a good kid.
16:24He's always had that sort of profile that you want from a keeper or that I'd want from a keeper.
16:28But I think, as you can see, he's just a good human being.
16:31And a lot of people forget about that human side of the game.
16:35But us as coaching staffs, you know, board members, you look at the personalities,
16:39you look at, you know, who the people are, how they behave, what they're like next to the pitch,
16:44and in their sort of social lives.
16:47And he's a prime example of that.
16:49Perfect start for them tonight, Jamie.
16:51Yeah, it was from a set piece.
16:52Listen, we highlighted it at a half-time about the role of Kulusevsky,
16:56but you shouldn't forget the strike from Elliot Anderson as well.
17:00I mean, it's difficult just to see on that angle.
17:02We can see him maybe a little bit better on the second angle.
17:05And we just highlight him.
17:08We were talking about this before the game, weren't we?
17:10In terms of, we're just highlighting there, Kulusevsky and Elliot Anderson in that position.
17:16About sometimes when we watch Spurs, sometimes they're almost thinking about going four before,
17:20you know, fix what's happening defensively.
17:23Yeah, and I think Ange will be furious at conceding on the set piece.
17:26But the first mistake for me is this header.
17:29I think he's got to do a lot better than that.
17:31Yeah.
17:31He's almost flicked it on like a striker.
17:33Yeah.
17:34And that's caused stress within that sort of 18-yard box.
17:38Just clear it.
17:39It's got to go miles away in the other direction.
17:42And then on a set piece, you want everyone, again, to be 110% focused on every single ball,
17:51whether it's the first ball, the second ball, or even a third ball if it gets played back in.
17:56And yeah, and luckily for Tottenham, that's not defended well.
17:59You see Kulusevsky there.
18:00He's already on his way before even Porro's made an attempt for the ball.
18:04But listen, looking at the strike, Elliot Anderson,
18:06it's been a brilliant sign of fun, hasn't it?
18:08From Newcastle, Keogh has to save it.
18:11But he gets a little nick as it comes through.
18:14But again, the goal should do an awful lot better on that one there.
18:18You wonder if Forrest smelt some of that vulnerability that was in the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
18:23What we saw in the second half in terms of going to a back five and sitting behind the ball,
18:27that didn't happen at the start of the game.
18:29We have to say that.
18:30You know, Nottingham Forrest playing a 4-4-2, really tight and narrow, got on the ball and played really well in the setup.
18:35But again, he caused problems for Spurs there with sort of blocking off.
18:39Spurs is just so naive.
18:40Like an academy team at times, how we perform defensively.
18:44But some of the things that we were highlighting before the game, Will, on another game,
18:48was about man marking within the box and when you should be with your zone.
18:51Yeah, so here, you can see Van Der Ven's got contacts of Chris Wood.
18:55And then he just lets him have, what is it, two, three yards of space.
18:59And you know that when you give Chris Wood that time and that space in the box,
19:04with that quality of delivery, he's going to score.
19:06So just to be clear, that is Van Der Ven's responsibility, is it?
19:09Because he can see what's happening in front of him.
19:12Again, it's a load of responsibilities.
19:14Kuzeski can do better and read that block a bit quicker.
19:18They can probably get out and stop the cross a bit earlier.
19:20But then when that ball comes in, again, I'd call that an emergency situation.
19:24Just pick your man up.
19:26Keep contact and just jump with him.
19:27Try and get in his way.
19:28Try and block the small, tiny detail that it is to stop him getting an easy header in the end.
19:36What we've got to remember as well, they've worked a situation which was already a dangerous situation.
19:40But they wanted the ball a little bit wider to put across it.
19:42So they obviously think this is a huge weakness for Tottenham.
19:46They've scored off a corner initially from a second ball.
19:48And this is the first choice centre-back pairing as well, I suppose we should point out.
19:52Yeah, but listen, the goalkeeper's not great.
19:54He wasn't great in the first goal. He's not great on this one either.
19:56But he's never great with the ball coming into the box.
19:58So it's definitely something they've identified that this is a weakness for Tottenham Hotspur.
20:03I mean, it's not rocket science. We see it week in, week out from them.
20:05And we've seen this from... This is becoming a feature almost of Forrest this season.
20:10This determination to keep the ball out the back of the net.
20:13If it's not Matt Sells, the goalkeeper, it's the defenders.
20:16In this case, Harry Toffolo, who's starting his first game of the season, Will.
20:21What does this tell you about the character of the team?
20:24It's entire and pure commitment.
20:26He reads it. His reaction's unbelievable.
20:28And they're willing to get a body on the line, get a toe on the line, get anything it takes to pick up points.
20:35It wasn't the most sexy display in the second half, but they're just efficient.
20:39They get the job done. Their game management is superb.
20:43And we've seen this before, these late goal line clearances.
20:46Ola Eina against Southampton in January.
20:49And it's just pure determination. That's commitment, determination.
20:52They did it against Manchester United as well. Another game which was settled by a single goal,
20:57like tonight, like that Southampton game, against Manchester United, this time Murillo.
21:03That's brilliant.
21:04And they celebrate it like a goal as well.
21:06It is. It literally is.
21:08I mean, it's been a big part of this season, not just Nottingham Forest.
21:11Defenders celebrating clearances and tackles.
21:14Do you not approve of that?
21:15Yeah. No, no, no. Listen, it's the game.
21:17I mean, you know, the great shots there are, the supporters.
21:20Just a little point I wanted to make on the Ola Eina one and the one tonight.
21:24That is not just, you know, we're talking about commitment on Murillo.
21:26He's almost just read the game and got himself there on the line.
21:29That's a job that people talk about not having people on the post.
21:32You know that as well.
21:33So sometimes you think, well, if I have someone on the post, maybe I'm losing someone here.
21:36So it looks like the job for those two players is maybe filling a space at the back post,
21:39picking someone up, but also filling in, almost doing two jobs.
21:42Is that right there on a set piece?
21:44Yeah, spot on.
21:45He's like half zone, half on the post.
21:48Uh, and if that ball gets played a long way into that second zone, he's going to be the
21:52player responsible to step out and clear it.
21:54Um, but if there's a front post flick on like there was there, he's also responsible to make
21:59that sort of two yard run towards the line.
22:00Yeah.
22:02Well, Spurs were better in the second half and it was, uh, them doing all the attacking.
22:07Do we have to give them credit for that, Jamie, that they were, you know, they were doing
22:10everything they could 51 crosses.
22:12This was the 48th of them to force away past cells.
22:17You can say that, but I think Nottingham Forest are saying, go on, cross it.
22:19That's why they go to the five at the back.
22:21Now, the goal team makes a really good save in a very similar situation that we just highlighted
22:25before.
22:25Listen, it's a great crossing.
22:27It's a great header.
22:28And I think if you're Nottingham Forest, you don't accept it, but they back themselves to be getting
22:34numbers in the box.
22:35Let the opposition have low scoring chances.
22:38There's lots of, of efforts at goal to be fair to Spurs.
22:41They've got like a, you know, a decent XG tonight, uh, but listen, this is a great crossing.
22:45It's a great header.
22:45And sometimes you have to hold your hands up to that, especially if you're in a team
22:48like Nottingham Forest, who say we are going to go into our box.
22:52You might be critical of other teams saying, oh, you've sunk deep.
22:54They actually want to do that and say, okay, we'll back ourselves.
22:57And, you know, they've won the game, obviously just lost the goal there.
22:59But I don't think you should be praising Tottenham too much for Sutton having so many shots
23:03or being on the ball.
23:04Nottingham Forest allow you to do that.
23:06It's different when you're up against a team who want to press high and get after you.
23:09And you've kept the ball and created chances because you've had to play through them.
23:12This is completely different.
23:13Really strong attacking start to the game from Nottingham Forest.
23:17And a really strong defensive performance from them in the second half.
23:20Despite that one goal, they managed to hold off the rest of Vang Posacoglu's team's advances.
23:26And it is an 18th defeat of this really disappointing Premier League season.
23:31We'll get his thoughts next.
23:45Now, we'll get to know about the game that's part of Vang Posacoglu.
23:50And to be honest, let's get to know about the game that's part of the game.
23:55It's a game that's about to have to play over the game.
23:57So you've watched that game.

27:35And if for Elliot Anderson deflected in.
27:48Big early goal for Donny and Forrest.
27:52A rare one for Elliot Anderson.
27:55But that won't matter right now.
27:57Just the start for the visitors in their fight for the Champions League.
28:05Wenger whips the ball into Wood.
28:07And that one should count for Chris Wood.
28:13They can't be stopped at the start of this one.
28:18And it did count.
28:19After five without a goal, Chris Wood back in goal-scoring form.
28:2319 in an extraordinary season for him.
28:26And a big part of why Forest find themselves once again in third place in the Premier League.
28:32But it is so tight in that race.
28:33Newcastle, Manchester City, Chelsea and Villa all still have a part to play in that race for a top five finish.
28:40Which Spurs are not in anywhere near sight of.
28:44Down there in 16th place, 37 points from 33 this season.
28:48That's an 18th defeat and a record eighth at home in a 38-game season.
28:52Here's Ange Postacoglu with Jonny Phillips.
28:55And the result probably doesn't tell the full story there.
28:59What was your assessment of the performance?
29:01Yeah, it's disappointing.
29:03It's a game we should never lose.
29:05It's another one we've let slip.
29:07Really disappointed with the goals we conceded.
29:10And the must for Australia, I think, is our football outside of that was outstanding.
29:16We couldn't dominate any more than we did or create the chances.
29:20But it's hurt us all year that we've just conceded poor goals and give ourselves a mountain to climb.
29:28Did it feel like mistakes being repeated, the manner of the two goals you did concede?
29:32It's not about mistakes being repeated.
29:34It's just that sort of concentration, focus for every minute of the game.
29:39Which we had Thursday night, we didn't seem to have at the beginning of the game.
29:44And it was only after we conceded we knuckled down and started playing our football.
29:49And I said, you can't sort of give teams two goal starts.
29:52When you did knuckle down, though, you must have been pleased with the response.
29:55Because it might have gone either way.
29:57And you got a lot from your players after that.
29:59Oh, yeah.
30:00Look, I don't think, even on the balance of the way, we deserved to lose that game.
30:03We certainly had enough chances.
30:04And our football was good.
30:05But that's been our problem all year is that it's not a matter of our football.
30:09It's about maintaining our focus and concentration for the whole game.
30:15And, you know, there's too many games this year we've lost in that manner.
30:18And that's why we're in the position we are.
30:20In terms of the changes you were making as well,
30:22were you comfortable that you were able to do that with, you know,
30:24one eye on what is ahead?
30:25Yeah, look, we always pre-planned for Mickey and Romero to play 45.
30:30And, you know, same with Kulisewski and Wilson.
30:35They haven't played for quite a while.
30:36So, give them about 60.
30:38But everyone got through it okay, I guess.
30:40But, you know, that's sort of, that's one thing.
30:43The other thing is, like I said, we want to maintain momentum.
30:46And, unfortunately, we missed that opportunity.
30:48It is a strange situation, though, because you want to maintain the momentum
30:51and get the performances.
30:52But also, you need to protect your players as well, don't you?
30:54Yeah, it's a bit of a balancing act.
30:56And we've got to be smart about what we do.
30:58You know, we've got to be ready for Thursday week.
31:02You know, that's the big game for us.
31:04And we've got to have all our players healthy and in good condition.
31:07But, like I said, today was not a game we should have lost.
31:09And that's still disappointing.
31:11And a case of now being mentally strong going forward,
31:13because you have got the game Thursday week, as you said,
31:15but also another test before then.
31:17Yeah, good test there against Liverpool, obviously.
31:20And, look, if we play like we did today,
31:23but keep our concentration levels where they should be,
31:26then we can give them a game.
31:27But, you know, we still need to sort of rectify a couple of things there.
31:32Appreciate your time. Thank you.
31:34Yes, another blow for Spurs in this really wretched Premier League season.
31:40And Franj Posikoglu and their next Premier League outing,
31:42before they even think again about the Europa League,
31:45is a trip to the champions-elect Liverpool.
31:48They might well clinch the title that day.
31:51Spurs might have other ideas.
31:53It kicks off at 4.30 next Sunday.
31:55And they did win 4-0 at the Etihad earlier this season
31:58before Manchester City got themselves in a real pickle.
32:01So, stranger things have happened.
32:05Yeah, listen.
32:07Yeah.
32:08I think when you listen to the manager there,
32:10you feel like you get the same interview
32:12because you turn out the same problems,
32:13but it's his job to fix them.
32:15Do you think this is a missed opportunity tonight, Jamie?
32:17In terms of changing this narrative around Ange Potikoglu,
32:21yes, we know there is the Europa League semi-final.
32:24There is potentially a place in the Champions League,
32:26but before tonight there were six league games,
32:2818 points in which they could change the story
32:32potentially around their season.
32:34Yeah.
32:35But we shouldn't forget the iron poor fall.
32:38They lost last week at Wolves 4-2.
32:40And the worry for me a little bit if I was a spare supporter,
32:43you know, the manager's talking there about,
32:45we play good football,
32:47we've let ourselves down with a couple of mistakes.
32:49On the back of last week at Wolves,
32:51after the game he said they played well.
32:53That would worry me a little bit there.
32:55And that would tell me that a manager's sort of sole focus,
32:58not sole,
32:59but a big thing for him is how his teams play with the ball.
33:02And if his teams play well with the ball,
33:03he feels like his team have played well.
33:05And he'll put that down tonight to a couple of,
33:07you know, concentration, a couple of mistakes.
33:10You can't say you've played well away at Wolves if you lose 4-2.
33:14Football's about with the ball and without the ball.
33:16And if you've played well,
33:18it means you've done well in both categories.
33:20And that never really happens with Tottenham.
33:22We highlighted before the problems that they have defensively
33:25and within 60 minutes they get beat 2-0.
33:27Does it come down to, again Will,
33:29this problem of Spurs being able to name their best team every time?
33:33There was only actually one change to the back four tonight,
33:35but there were five changes to the starting line-up.
33:38And what people were saying was the best defensive performances
33:41of the season against Frankfurt.
33:43Yeah, I mean, you know, he said it before the game.
33:46He's got a squad to pick from and he's picked those players.
33:50And I don't want to be one of those people that, you know,
33:52questions what managers do,
33:54because I get questioned all the time about it.
33:56And it depends what they're trying to do,
33:59what the sort of end goal is.
34:00Do they want to be 100% ready for that Europa League?
34:03Or is there still a focus on the Premier League?
34:07It's where do they want to go with it?
34:10And if, like you said,
34:11if they want to give 45 minutes to four players,
34:14you know, fair enough.
34:15That's the plan.
34:16That's what they need to do.
34:17But you can see in his reaction the frustration,
34:20because ultimately they've lost the game on two soft set pieces.
34:24And I'll speak for myself.
34:26I hate losing games on set pieces.
34:28I hate conceding goals on set pieces.
34:30Because it's one of those things that you can, to an extent, control
34:34or have the most control on during a game.
34:37So, yeah, frustrating for him, without a doubt.
34:40You just hate losing full stop, don't you?
34:41Well, yeah.
34:42We are talking Will's coaching philosophies and some of his practices
34:49when we come back.
34:50We've managed to glean a bit of footage from his own MacBook.
34:55And Will's going to be presenting to us about how he goes about
34:58setting up his own team, Lens, in just a couple of minutes.
35:01We'll see you in just a couple of minutes.
