00:30They're coming.
00:40Let's leave.
00:51Where will we go?
00:53Later.
00:54We've got to hurry.
01:00How long will we'll be gone?
01:05I don't know.
01:14Herod's soldiers are everywhere.
01:17It's too late.
01:30Kick it in.
01:49Give the child to me.
01:51I don't want to wear my crown, boy.
02:04Get your hands dirty.
02:07The Massacre of the Innocents is a story which is only found in the Gospel of Matthew.
02:18It's odd that outside the New Testament, other people who write about the time period, like the ancient historian Josephus, makes no mention of it.
02:28But with that being said, based on archaeology, Bethlehem, around the time of the birth of Jesus, contained less than a thousand people.
02:42Based on that, the Massacre of the Innocents would have only been about 10 to 30 infants.
02:50Now, infant mortality rates were incredibly high in the ancient world.
02:55And the death of 10 to 30 babies would not have been a historical event, would not have been recorded, and would not have been noteworthy.
03:02Noteworthy.
03:10Antipas.
03:11Sir.
03:12Sir.
03:13Sir!
03:15Keep going.
03:16We don't stop until they're all dead.
03:18Yeah.
03:19Yes, sir.
03:32You!
03:33Stop!
03:44You!
03:45Stop!
03:49Oh, shit.
04:02I do.
04:03Stop!
04:24So?
04:27It is done.
04:28Você matou todos os mortos
04:33Todos os mortos
04:35Todos os mortos
04:37Todos os mortos
04:38Todos os mortos
04:41Bem, Antipas
04:45Nós matamos todos
04:55Todos os mortos
04:57Todos os mortos
04:59Todos os mortos
05:00Todos os mortos
05:02Todos os mortos
05:04Todos os mortos
05:08Herod must have believed
05:10That all the children were dead
05:11And that he had successfully
05:13Killed off the prophecy
05:14But he's wrong
05:27Mary and Joseph pack up their baby
05:32And all of their belongings
05:33And they move out of Herod's territory
05:36They move to a safe place
05:37You should drink some
05:58I am like a camel
06:01And apparently I smell like one too
06:05Do you think we're safe?
06:11As long as Herod is alive
06:13We will always be in danger
06:15We must keep moving
06:18Where would be safe to go
06:31That Herod didn't have power or connections?
06:33The answer would be Egypt
06:36The trip was incredibly dangerous
06:39Hundreds of miles through valleys and hills
06:42My best guess would be
06:45Mary, Joseph and the baby
06:47Went down through what we would call today
06:50The Gaza Strip to Egypt
06:52As to how long they were there
06:57It's very hard to say
07:22Great king
07:38That is what they call me
07:40But nobody understands
07:44The sacrifice it takes
07:47To be great
07:49I have murdered sons
07:53Executed a wife
07:56Killed the things I love the most
08:01That is the price of being a queen
08:08A crown of my heart
08:18What is it?
08:42Herod is dead
08:43You saw it?
08:56We can return home
08:58And to pass
09:24Brother
09:27Brother
09:29You're late
09:31And you look like
09:34You're overcompensating
09:35For something
09:36If you're trying to impress
09:38Our father
09:39I'm afraid it's a little late
09:40For that
09:41Is it true that he
09:43Stabbed himself?
09:46It didn't work though
09:47Hmm
09:48After a reign
09:51Of more than 30 years
09:52King Herod
09:53King Herod is finally dead
09:54He tries on multiple occasions
09:57To commit suicide
09:58But ultimately
10:00It was a case of gangrene
10:01That moved from Herod's genitals
10:04Into his kidneys
10:05This was ultimately
10:07What led to Herod's death
10:08Has anyone checked
10:12That he's actually dead?
10:14Oh come on Archelaus
10:21We should be happy
10:23To be alive
10:23We outlived our father
10:26When so many
10:29Did not
10:30His final years
10:33Were marked by a period
10:34Of derangement
10:35And paranoia
10:36Nobody
10:37Had been safe
10:39According to Josephus
10:44One of Herod's last acts
10:46Is to execute
10:47His eldest living son
10:48Antipater
10:49I am your son
10:53I have others
11:00He was in theory
11:07The chosen heir
11:08The one who would
11:09Succeed Herod as king
11:10But
11:12He thought his son
11:13Was plotting against him
11:14And he ordered his execution
11:16One brother less
11:25One brother closer
11:32To the throne
11:33Than heir
11:36And a spare
11:38Of Herod's six surviving sons
11:46Antipas and Archelaus
11:48Believe that they have
11:50The strongest claim
11:52To all of Herod's territories
11:55But as a client king of Rome
12:03King Herod's will
12:05Has to be approved
12:06By the emperor Augustus
12:07So both Antipas
12:09And Archelaus
12:10Travel to Rome
12:11To plead their own cases
12:13To rule all
12:15Of their father's land
12:16Even from the grave
12:23Our father's hand
12:24Reaches out
12:25To strangle us
12:26Finally something
12:28We both agree on
12:29Neither son
12:32Gets the big prize
12:33That they want
12:34Archelaus gets the territory
12:37Around Jerusalem
12:38Known as Judea
12:39Antipas gets Galilee
12:42And Perea
12:42And a third son
12:44Philip
12:44Gets the northeastern portion
12:46Of the kingdom
12:47And a third son
12:48And a third son
12:48And a third son
12:53Herodias
12:53Do you remember
12:55My brother?
12:55My brother
12:55Antipas
13:00I saw you at the funeral
13:02A sad day
13:04You lie beautifully
13:13Herodias is a Jewish princess
13:22From the Hasmonean line
13:24And the Hasmoneans
13:25Were the Jewish rulers
13:27Who had ruled for about a century
13:29Before King Herod
13:31The royal pedigree
13:38Makes Herodias
13:40A particularly good catch
13:41She would bring prestige
13:43To anyone
13:44Whom she married
13:45Now I won't have to kill you
13:50She will
13:53Herodias and Antipas
14:03Meet in the city of Rome
14:05They fall in love
14:07And they begin a love affair
14:10That is, let us say
14:11Politically loaded
14:13The problem is
14:16Herodias is already married
14:18She's actually the wife
14:20Of Antipas' half-brother
14:22Herod II
14:23According to Matthew's Gospel
14:33The Holy Family stays in Egypt
14:35Until Herod the Great is dead
14:37And they can return
14:38To their home in Nazareth
14:40The impression that we get
14:46Is that the Holy Family
14:47Had been living in Egypt
14:48For some time
14:50We know that Herod died
14:53In about 2 BC
14:54Or a little earlier than that
14:56That means, of course,
14:58Jesus was born BC
14:59And our calendars are wrong
15:01I carried our son
15:06Halfway across the desert
15:07I can manage this
15:08We are leaving
15:12With more than we brought
15:13We left with our lives
15:15And him
15:17With God
15:18The Holy Family
15:21Living in Egypt
15:22And returning to Judea
15:24Fulfils a prophecy
15:25From the biblical prophet
15:26Hosea
15:27That says
15:28Out of Egypt
15:29I have called my son
15:30It also picks up on a theme
15:32That recurs throughout
15:33The Gospel of Matthew
15:34That suggests that Jesus
15:36Is a new Moses
15:37Just as Moses
15:42Lived in Egypt
15:43And led the Israelite people
15:45To Judea
15:46So too
15:47Jesus lived in Egypt
15:49And returns
15:49To the Promised Land
15:51The region of Galilee
15:59Where Mary and Joseph
16:00Are traveling to
16:01Is particularly unsettled
16:03A local bandit
16:05Named Judas
16:06Leads a number of rebels
16:08In capturing the city
16:10Of Sepphorus
16:11The capital of Galilee
16:12Judas declares
16:20That he is going to
16:21Establish a true
16:23Jewish dynasty
16:25To rule over
16:26A unified
16:27And Jewish
16:29Judea
16:29The Romans recapture the city
16:43And 2,000 Jews
16:46Who were suspected
16:47And participating
16:48In the rebellion
16:49Are crucified
16:50The Romans do this
16:54So that everyone
16:55Will know
16:56That rebellion
16:57Against Rome
16:59Is not possible
17:00Resistance
17:02Is futile
17:04This violence
17:12Was taking place
17:13On Mary and Joseph's
17:14Doorstep
17:15They may have
17:16Witnessed this destruction
17:17Or maybe even
17:18The crucifixions
17:19From Nazareth
17:21You said Herod was dead
17:48He is
17:50This is the work
17:53Of the Romans
17:53Only they crucify
17:56All that work
18:04The felling of a tree
18:07The planing of the wood
18:11The forging of a nail
18:14Just to kill a man
18:18This violence
18:26Certainly affected
18:27The way
18:28That they lived
18:30And perhaps
18:30The way
18:31That they
18:31Raised Jesus
18:32After the family
18:44Returns to Nazareth
18:46There's basically
18:47A 30 year period
18:48Before we know
18:49Anything else
18:50About Jesus
18:51The Gospels
18:55Don't tell us
18:55A lot about
18:56Jesus
18:56Early childhood
18:57We have to surmise
18:59A bit
18:59What was Jesus
19:00Life like
19:00And we can probably
19:02Assume that much
19:04Of his upbringing
19:05Was overseen
19:06By his mother Mary
19:07Who would have been
19:08Responsible not just
19:09For raising him
19:09But for overseeing
19:11Much of his early
19:12Spiritual education
19:13In the beginning
19:16God created the heavens
19:18And the earth
19:20Now the earth
19:21Was formless
19:22And empty
19:23Darkness
19:25Was over the surface
19:26Of the deep
19:27And the spirit of God
19:29Was hovering
19:30Over the waters
19:31And God said
19:33Let there be light
19:34And there was light
19:36I think that most people
19:38Would be surprised
19:39To think of Jesus
19:40With brothers and sisters
19:41All four Gospels
19:44Tell us that Jesus
19:45Had brothers and sisters
19:47The idea that Jesus
19:50Would have had brothers
19:51And sisters
19:51Makes a lot of Catholics
19:52Uncomfortable
19:53Because of the idea
19:54And the belief
19:55Of the perpetual virginity
19:57Of Mary
19:58Catholics would probably say
19:59That these were
20:00Stepbrothers and stepsisters
20:01Maybe Joseph's
20:02Children from a former marriage
20:05I'm a Protestant clergy
20:07And we believe
20:08That once Mary
20:11Gave birth to Jesus
20:12She and Joseph
20:13Assumed a marital relationship
20:16And God saw
20:18That the light
20:18Was good
20:19And God separated
20:22The light
20:22From the darkness
20:23The fact that Jesus
20:26Had brothers and sisters
20:27Or stepbrothers
20:28And stepsisters
20:29Reminds us
20:29That he had a real life
20:30That he comes
20:31From a family
20:32He lives in a real town
20:33He lives a real human life
20:36And the darkness
20:37He called night
20:38And the evening
20:40And the morning
20:41Were the first day
20:43One day
20:46You will teach me
20:48He will teach the world
20:51There is only one line
20:56That the Gospel of Luke
20:57Gives us
20:57That covers about
20:5820 years of Jesus' life
21:00It says that he grew
21:02In wisdom
21:03And stature
21:04And in favor
21:05With both God
21:06And man
21:06Judea is now
21:18Directly ruled
21:19By Rome
21:20As one of their provinces
21:22A few years before
21:29It had been ruled
21:30By Herod Archelaus
21:32One of Herod
21:33The Great's sons
21:33But he proved
21:35So cruel
21:36And stupid
21:36That Augustus
21:38Finally got rid of him
21:39And sent him off
21:39Into exile in France
21:41In 26 AD
21:45A new Roman governor
21:46Arrives in the province
21:47Of Judea
21:48By the name
21:49Of Pontius Pilate
21:50May God arrive
21:57May his enemies
22:00Be scattered
22:01Pilate is somebody
22:04That we actually
22:05Know a fair bit
22:06About because
22:07He's written about
22:08In external sources
22:09Like smoke
22:12Pilate comes from
22:13The equestrian class
22:14That's the lowest
22:15Of the three
22:16Roman noble classes
22:17And he's probably
22:18Made a name for himself
22:20Fighting barbarians
22:21On the fringes
22:22Of the empire
22:22The Lord
22:23Is at your right hand
22:25He will crush kings
22:28On the day of his wrath
22:30He will judge the nations
22:33You know
22:33The Germans fought
22:34For their land
22:35And their families
22:36But this lot
22:37A horde of religious fanatics
22:41Like wax
22:42Belts before the fire
22:44May all the wicked
22:47Perish before God
22:49The Lord
22:50Is at your right hand
22:52He will crush
22:54Every ruler
22:55He will judge
22:58And crush kings
23:00You should learn
23:04To speak Latin
23:06People might listen
23:10Unlike what we read
23:18In the gospels
23:18Particularly the gospel
23:19Of John
23:20That paints Pilate
23:21As a sympathetic character
23:22Maybe even philosophical
23:24Pilate was not a nice guy
23:27He was profoundly
23:30Anti-semitic
23:32Profoundly anti-semitic
23:34The Judean people
23:36Are a troublesome lot
23:37For any ruler
23:38But especially
23:39For a foreign occupier
23:41If Pilate is going
23:42To be successful
23:43The number one quality
23:45He has to have
23:46Is diplomacy
23:47Unfortunately
23:48That seems to be
23:50The quality
23:51That Pilate
23:51Is especially lacking in
23:53Antipas' lands
23:58Ordered on Pilate
23:59He's one of the most
24:00Powerful Jewish rulers
24:02In the region
24:03He would have known
24:04About disturbances
24:05That implicated Rome
24:06Especially if they were
24:08To do with the temple
24:09What?
24:11Get me my robe
24:27Now
24:28Early in his term
24:37In office
24:37Pilate decides
24:39That he's going
24:40To place
24:41The legions
24:43Under his command
24:44In winter quarters
24:45In the city
24:46Of Jerusalem
24:46This means
24:49That the standards
24:50Of the legions
24:51Which are themselves
24:52Sacred objects
24:54And contain images
24:55Of the deified
24:57Roman emperor
24:58Are now going to be
25:00In the grounds
25:01Of the Jewish temple
25:02From the Jewish perspective
25:05This is an absolute outrage
25:07Pilate just doesn't care
25:09He's so blinded
25:11By his dislike
25:12Of Jews
25:13That he doesn't think about it
25:15Upon hearing of the protests
25:25In Jerusalem
25:26Antipas reaches out
25:28To Pilate
25:29Trying to convince him
25:30To back down
25:31To deescalate
25:32Savages
25:45These disturbances continue
25:50They shall have no choice
25:52But to respond
25:53With force
25:53Prefects
25:55All they demand
25:55Is the removal
25:56Of the images
25:57Of the emperor
25:57I don't think you appreciate
26:00How vehemently
26:01Jews fall
26:01Idols
26:02Do you?
26:04Have you not heard
26:04What happened
26:05When my father
26:05Placed an eagle
26:06Above the temple?
26:08The temple
26:09Those people
26:10Outside
26:10The entire
26:11Province of Judea
26:12Is under
26:13The jurisdiction
26:14Of Tiberius
26:15Right now
26:17He doesn't force you
26:18To worship our God
26:19Seeks nothing in return
26:21Except for
26:22The respect
26:23He is due
26:24All I ask
26:27Is for a little tact
26:28I saw no tact
26:31When your brother
26:32Slaughtered dozens
26:33Of Jewish worshippers
26:34On the steps of the temple
26:36I am not my brother
26:40And if you're not
26:42Removed to standards
26:43Then I'll take my protest
26:45To the emperor
26:46Himself
26:47Antipas decides
26:56To write
26:57To the emperor
26:57Tiberius
26:58Telling Tiberius
27:00What has happened
27:01Telling Tiberius
27:01Perhaps this whole
27:03Provincial experiment
27:05Isn't a great idea
27:07And that
27:07Maybe Antipas
27:08Should be given
27:09Back control
27:10Of his family's territory
27:12The Jews are not happy
27:16About increasingly
27:17Direct Roman rule
27:19But they're not strong
27:21Enough to kick
27:22These rulers out
27:23So instead
27:24Resistance
27:25Takes other forms
27:26On the banks
27:33Of the Jordan
27:34Is a prophet
27:35Who thinks
27:35The Romans days
27:36Are numbered
27:37Repent!
27:55For the kingdom
28:00Of heaven
28:00Is at hand
28:01As it is written
28:10By Isaiah
28:10The prophet
28:12To prepare
28:15Your way
28:15Every ravine
28:23Will be filled
28:23And every mountain
28:26And hill
28:27Will be bought low
28:29The crooked
28:39Will become straight
28:41And rough roads
28:42Smooth
28:43And all flesh
28:47All flesh
28:48Will see
28:48The salvation
28:49Of God
28:50Come
28:56In Mark's gospel
29:01The first gospel
29:02To be written
29:03The first character
29:04We meet
29:05Is not Jesus
29:06Is not Mary
29:07Is not Joseph
29:08It is John
29:10The Baptist
29:11Come with me
29:12And you will see
29:15Come
29:17Come all
29:19Out in the wilderness
29:23Proclaiming
29:24A message
29:26Of repentance
29:27We hear in the New Testament
29:31About crowds
29:32Following John the Baptist
29:34So this sounds like
29:35A lot of people
29:36And they're a really
29:37Mixed group
29:38We've got tax collectors
29:39There
29:39We've got soldiers
29:40There
29:40We've got Jewish elite
29:41Leaders there
29:42And we shouldn't imagine
29:44That in their encumement
29:45We're looking at luxury
29:46We're probably looking
29:47At something pretty basic
29:48In the gospels
29:50There's a picture
29:51Of John that emerges
29:52He wears camels hair
29:53He eats locusts
29:54And wild honey
29:55He looks like
29:56The prophets of old
29:57His hair is unkempt
30:00He's dirty
30:01He probably smells terrible
30:03He is a wild man
30:06And so like
30:07One would think
30:08That people would
30:09Just ignore him
30:10Or run away from him
30:12And yet
30:13You've got this group
30:14Of people
30:15Going down to the Jordan
30:16To listen to John preach
30:18For your repentance
30:21Behold
30:23The Lamb of God
30:26To wash away your sins
30:30You'll see
30:33You'll see
30:42I baptize you
30:48With water
30:49For repentance
30:50God loves you brother
30:59John is immersing people
31:03In water
31:04In the Jordan
31:05Called baptism
31:07For the forgiveness
31:08For the forgiveness
31:08Of their sins
31:09This ritual of immersion
31:18Gives John his nickname
31:20That is John the baptizer
31:22Jewish religious law
31:25Called for habitual
31:27And repeated washing
31:28To fulfill purity regulations
31:30Known as tevila
31:31John's version of baptism
31:34Is a little different
31:35He sees baptism
31:37Not as a habitual requirement
31:39But rather as a spiritual revolution
31:42That will prepare someone
31:43For the inbreaking
31:44Of the kingdom of God
31:45John is focusing on repentance
31:51Because he thinks
31:52The deep problems
31:54They choose
31:54Is their willingness
31:56To sin boldly
31:59And not repent
32:00And he finds this
32:02To be a problem
32:03The Jewish religious authorities
32:07Come all the way
32:08From Jerusalem
32:09To the Jordan
32:10To hear him
32:10Give a message there
32:12Where he actually
32:13Rails against them
32:14Have you come to be baptized
32:20Wash away your sin
32:23Who are you
32:27Let me guess
32:33Elijah
32:36Are you the prophet
32:41Hmm
32:42I am the voice
32:47Of one crying out
32:48In the wilderness
32:49Make straight
32:51The way of the Lord
32:52Hmm
32:57Right
32:59What should we do then
33:05John's message is one of repentance
33:33Of turning
33:34Of changing your ways
33:36And it's a message
33:37So compelling
33:38And perhaps so threatening
33:39That the powers of the time
33:41Find in John
33:42Not just a prophet
33:43In the wilderness
33:43But a threat
33:44To their power
33:45For John
33:47His anger
33:48I think is whelped up
33:49By the injustice
33:50That he sees
33:51In everyday life
33:51Whoever has two coats
33:54Must share with anyone
33:55Who has none
33:56And whoever has food
34:00Must do likewise
34:02John the Baptist
34:04Is a kind of social revolutionary
34:07Judea at this time
34:08Is a place of great contrast
34:10Enormous wealth
34:11And crushing poverty
34:13What John the Baptist wants
34:15Is for the wealthy
34:15To take care of the poor
34:17And you can never
34:18Call people to this kind
34:20Of repentance
34:20And to this kind
34:21Of social change
34:22Without being politically involved
34:25Repent
34:26For the kingdom of heaven
34:28Comes near
34:29Don't end up like them
34:34After me comes one
34:39Who is more powerful
34:40Than I
34:41Whose sandals
34:44I am not worthy
34:44To carry
34:45John is preparing
34:50The way
34:50For a messiah
34:52For a deliverer
34:53For a liberator
34:55He sees
34:56What has gone awry
34:57And he's imagining
34:59A possibility
35:00Of God's agent
35:01Of God's prophet
35:02Of God's messiah
35:03Coming to set
35:04The world right
35:04Somewhere between
35:18Jesus at age 12
35:20And when Jesus
35:21Begins his ministry
35:23Roughly around age 30
35:25Joseph seems to have died
35:27The image that we sometimes
35:33See in western art
35:35Is Jesus as this meek
35:36Pious
35:37Dough-eyed person
35:38That couldn't lift
35:39More than a little pebble
35:40We have to remember
35:41That this is someone
35:42Who worked hard
35:43You know
35:43A physical laborer
35:45A lot of people
35:48Imagine Jesus
35:49With long hair
35:51But this is much more
35:52Of a medieval idea
35:54The historical Jesus
35:55Would have been like
35:57Many Jewish men
35:58Of that era
35:59He would have had short hair
36:00He kept us safe
36:10For these years
36:10He taught me a trade
36:16How to be a good man
36:21What will you do now
36:25There are houses
36:27To be built
36:28Your father's work
36:31To continue
36:31Family is the central core
36:36Of Jewish life
36:37In the first century
36:38So when Joseph dies
36:40He leaves the family
36:41Without their central figure
36:43Without their patriarch
36:44Without their breadwinner
36:46My apprenticeship
36:50Has come to an end
36:51It's time to build
36:54A different
36:54Kind of house
36:55How are you going, Bella?
37:02I've heard of a man
37:03Who preaches by the river
37:04We need you
37:06They need me
37:10And you have James
37:13A lot of people
37:17Are surprised to find out
37:19That Jesus had a brother
37:20And that we know his name
37:21It's mentioned all over
37:22The New Testament
37:23And that's because
37:24There's a kind of
37:25Later Catholic doctrine
37:26That says that
37:27After Mary gave birth
37:29To Jesus
37:30Her virginity sealed back up
37:32And in fact
37:33She had no other children
37:34So Catholics would probably say
37:41That these were stepbrothers
37:42And stepsisters
37:43Not the natural children
37:45Of Mary
37:46Protestants have no trouble
37:47With the idea
37:48That they were actual
37:49Brothers and sisters
37:50We can imagine
37:53There might be
37:54A little bit
37:55Of a frosty relationship
37:56Between James and Jesus
37:57Because when Jesus
37:59Leaves the family
38:01To go and conduct
38:02His ministry
38:03James is left
38:04Having to support
38:05His family
38:06We're doing the Lord's work
38:30And you can't do the Lord's work
38:33Without food
38:34According to the Gospels
38:42One of John's followers
38:44Is a man by the name of Andrew
38:45He's going to play a central role
38:48In the movement of Jesus of Nazareth
38:50Andrew
38:52Andrew
38:52I think without question
38:54Is a spiritual seeker
38:56He's not happy
38:58With the state
38:59Of his religion
39:00And he's looking for
39:02Preachers
39:03Who could help
39:04Them
39:04Find a better way
39:06To be faithful to God
39:07Are you the Messiah?
39:11I am not the Messiah
39:16But I have been sent
39:19Ahead of him
39:20He will baptize you
39:26With the Holy Spirit
39:27And fire
39:28His fork in his hand
39:31And he will clear
39:33The threshing floor
39:34Gathering his wheat
39:36Into the barn
39:37And burning up the chaff
39:40With unquenchable fire
39:41Unlike many Jews
39:44John is not expecting
39:46A Messiah
39:47Who will be a military leader
39:49Like King David
39:50The greatest king
39:51In Israel's history
39:52John's Messiah
39:54Will burn up everyone
39:55Apart from those
39:56Who have repented
39:57And will usher in
39:58A new era
39:59Of God's rule
40:00Here on earth
40:01The poor will no longer be poor
40:04The oppressed
40:05Will no longer be oppressed
40:06This will be the kingdom of God
40:08Right here
40:09Right now
40:09Will you baptize me?
40:14Will you baptize me?
40:16Will you baptize me?
40:17Will you baptize me?
40:18Will you baptize me?
40:19Will you baptize me?
40:19Will you baptize me?
40:20Will you baptize me?
40:21Will you baptize me?
40:21Will you baptize me?
40:22Will you baptize me?
40:23Will you baptize me?
40:23Will you baptize me?
40:24Will you baptize me?
40:25Will you baptize me?
40:25Will you baptize me?
40:26Will you baptize me?
40:26Will you baptize me?
40:27Will you baptize me?
40:27Will you baptize me?
40:28Will you baptize me?
40:28Will you baptize me?
40:29Will you baptize me?
40:29Will you baptize me?
40:30Will you baptize me?
40:30Will you baptize me?
40:31Will you baptize me?
40:31Will you baptize me?
40:32Will you baptize me?

42:49I wonder if it is me that should be learning from you.
42:54Your conviction
42:55is inspiring.
43:00The Gospels make it seem like
43:01the time that John the Baptist and Jesus
43:04spent together was very short.
43:06But in historical reality,
43:08it's possible that
43:10they spent much more time together
43:12learning from one another
43:13and becoming part of the same community.
43:19Many New Testament scholars
43:21believe that Jesus was, for a time,
43:23a member of John's circle,
43:25really actually a disciple of John.
43:30In this case, it looks like John the Baptist
43:33is the kind of teacher,
43:35even role model for Jesus
43:37as he thinks about his own ministry.
43:42I've dedicated my life
43:43to preaching the Word of God,
43:45preparing the ground
43:49for the one that follows me.
43:54The people.
43:57The people cry out for an end
43:59to their misery,
44:00the fall of their enemies,
44:03and the time
44:04of the one true Lord.
44:07It is a future I long to see.
44:20Jesus,
44:20what future do you see?
44:29You are the teacher.
44:37I see a time
44:42when prophecies
44:43will come to pass
44:44and God's fire
44:48wipes away
44:50the pain of his people
44:51like a sandstorm.
44:53The Jewish people
45:04are looking for
45:05a very strong Messiah
45:07who will lead them
45:09out of Roman occupation.
45:12John the Baptist
45:13expects the Messiah
45:14to be not only disruptive,
45:17but even violent.
45:18He is going to burn up
45:19those who are involved
45:21in the Roman occupation.
45:31And that includes
45:33the new Roman governor
45:34of Judea,
45:36Pontius Pilate.
45:42At some point
45:43during his governorship,
45:44Pilate builds
45:45an aqueduct
45:46bringing fresh water
45:47to the city of Jerusalem.
45:51which is a great idea.
45:53There's only one problem.
45:55He decides
45:55that this extremely
45:56expensive project
45:57will be funded
45:58from the treasury
45:59of the Jerusalem temple.
46:05And this causes
46:06an outcry
46:07because those funds
46:08are sacred, right?
46:09It is their money.
46:10It's not the Roman Empire's money.
46:12And they don't want it
46:13used for a secular purpose
46:15like building an aqueduct.
46:16A man can live
46:37without many things.
46:39wine,
46:41women,
46:42money even.
46:45But water,
46:46it's the blood
46:48of life.
46:49Think of an aqueduct
46:51as a heart
46:52pumping blood
46:53or in this case,
46:56water.
46:57The aqueduct flows,
47:00your children
47:00drink fresh water,
47:02your crops
47:03grow.
47:04But if it stops,
47:07you die.
47:12So everyone
47:14will benefit.
47:16And all we ask
47:18is that you contribute.
47:24How very predictable.
47:28Pilots sends
47:35a small group
47:35of soldiers
47:36dressed in plain clothes
47:38into the crowd
47:38armed with clubs.
47:42Having people
47:43use clubs
47:44instead of swords
47:46is a way
47:46to inflict terror
47:48without causing
47:49an outright massacre.
47:52Surely the day
47:53is coming.
47:54It will burn
47:55like a furnace.
47:58all the arrogant
48:00and every evildoer
48:02will be stubble.
48:05And the day
48:06that is coming
48:07will set them
48:08on fire.
48:13Holy,
48:14holy,
48:17holy is the
48:19Lord Almighty.
48:22John the Baptist
48:23is preparing
48:24the way
48:25for the Messiah,
48:26the Son of God
48:28who just so
48:29happens to be
48:30potentially
48:32his cousin
48:33Jesus.
48:34And in this moment
48:35Jesus is
48:36potentially getting
48:37ready to launch
48:38into his own
48:39ministry.
48:40Here's the question.
48:41Who is Jesus
48:42to John the Baptist?
48:44Or more importantly,
48:45more intriguing,
48:46is who is
48:47John the Baptist
48:47to Jesus?
48:48Jesus.
48:49Jesus.
49:09Jesus,
49:09O tempo chegou.
49:39O tempo chegou.
50:09O tempo chegou.
