00:00You may have heard that these foods never expire, but it's a little more complicated than that.
00:04Some hard cheeses like parmesan or cheddar take a longer time to go bad, but they do go bad at
00:09some point. Look for slimy texture, mold on the surface, off-putting odors, and a funky flavor.
00:16Rice has a long shelf life. White rice will last a few years, but brown rice will last just a few
00:22months. Unopened soy sauce will last a few years in the pantry, but once opened, it'll last a few
00:28months in the refrigerator. You might not think that popcorn kernels would expire, but over time,
00:33diminishing quality will lead to unpoppable popcorn. Ideally, use your popcorn kernels within the year.
00:39Unopened pickles will last for a while because they are preserved in acid or vinegar, but at some point,
00:44they will go bad, so look for signs of mushy or pickles, off-putting smelly odors, color change,
00:50or mold floating on the surface or around the rim of the jar. Honey might not necessarily go bad,
00:55but over time, it will crystallize and become harder to use. Trust your eyes, trust your nose.
01:01If something feels off, it probably is.
