00:00Nightly salutations on this dim, dark and dreary evening.
00:08Truly a sad, mournful day as the entire planet laments the loss of one truly loved leader of the flock and humanity at large.
00:17Denise Osorio here, homegrown and with a heavy heart, to bring you the stories for this evening.
00:22Pope Francis' universal appeal and the big question on who likely succeeds him.
00:27First things first, let's make clear, Pope Francis was recuperating for over two and a half months from double pneumonia and not double lung cancer.
00:37Nevertheless, and then again, Pope Francis has been called to return to the home of the Father early morning today,
00:43Vatican Chamberlain Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced before 8 a.m. today Vatican time.
00:49His demise likely because of complications to his critical ailment of double pneumonia.
00:53Pope Francis, the beloved pontiff in his 12-year reign as St. Peter's designate to lead close to 1.4 billion in the Catholic faith,
01:04helped reshape the Catholic Church with a tinge of non-traditional approach to reforms to include appointing women to high-ranking Vatican positions,
01:14a non-condemnatory stance on same-sex marriage and homosexuality,
01:20and his non-traditional choices for clergymen or cardinals in the Curia.
01:24Cardinals who are among those to vote for the next Pope atop the short list of potential pontiffs include
01:33Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, 70, veteran Vatican administrator and foreign relations expert,
01:41Cardinal Peter Erdo, 72, from Hungary, a strong advocate of traditional doctrines and teachings,
01:48Cardinal Peter Tuckson, 72, from Ghana, a stalwart promoter of social justice, climate change, and poverty alleviation,
01:56and Cardinal Luis Tagle, 67, whose closeness with Pope Francis has put him in his inner circle and front-runner to succeed him,
02:05is well-known and a sure thing to pick up and pursue his progressive agenda of inclusivity and evangelization.
02:12Soviet-born and Russian coaches still shaping U.S. gymnastics.
02:22The untimely demise of Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov in a mid-air collision of a commercial airline
02:29and a U.S. Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington, D.C. earlier in the year
02:35has put the critical role Russian coaching plays in putting U.S. gymnastics at par with world-class competition.
02:41So why has Russian gymnastics mentoring been so indispensable to American gymnasts performing well in international competition?
02:49VOA's Maxim Adams tells us more.
02:52Several Russian or Soviet-born ice skating coaches work in the U.S.
02:58Sports journalist Alexander Shmournov says many came to America after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991,
03:06bringing their talent and coaching style with them.
03:09Many coaches left, and they got super successful in the U.S.
03:15Rafael Aruchinian, Marina Zueva, Igor Shpilbant, Alexey Kilikov, Yuris Razguliaevs, Tatiana Mali'nyna.
03:25Tatiana Mali'nyna is the most successful figure skater in the history of the Uzbek national team.
03:31After she retired from competing, she moved to the U.S., where she currently coaches.
03:37Her son, figure skater Ilya Mali'nyn, is the 2024 world champion.
03:46Paris coaches Olga Ganicheva and Alexey Letov, like many others,
03:51moved to the U.S. from the former U.S.R. in the early 1990s.
03:56They now work at the same Boston figure skating club as Evgeniya Shishkova and Vadim Naumov,
04:03the pair's coaches who were killed in jet helicopter collision last month in Washington.
04:09Ganicheva remembers when she and Letov decided to leave Russia.
04:13We had no money. Poverty brought us to the U.S.
04:19It was a tough time for sports back home, and here it was the opposite, especially for figure skating.
04:25We received our green card in two weeks because Russian figure skaters were regarded so highly.
04:34American figure skater Victoria Harmon, vice president of the Winterhurst figure skating club in Cleveland,
04:41grew up under the guidance of two Russian coaches, Olga Volozhinskaya and Svetlana Kodarkovsky.
04:48Russian coaching and methodology have influenced skaters worldwide, including my own.
04:56And the training, the artistry, the discipline instilled by these coaches continue to shape the sport.
05:05And it's something that we all recognize and we all really appreciate.
05:12Sports journalist Shmurnov also notes the tremendous influence of Russian skaters and coaches on American figure skating.
05:21In the U.S., thanks to those who have come from the former Soviet Union, figure skating of a new level was born.
05:32In early 2000s, when the Russian figure skating association received more financial support,
05:39many coaches and skaters returned.
05:41But several have decided to stay.
05:44For them, America has become home and the place they have chosen to raise a new generation of figure skating stars.
05:53Maxim Adams, VOA News, Washington.
05:59So right now, let's turn to my colleague in PTV's Baguio City Studios for what's hot and happening in the Cordilleras.
