Growing 'sex tourism' in Japan a dark flipside to surge in visitors — NGO

A dark flipside is emerging to the bustling nightlife of Toyko and Japan's recent surge in foreign visitors: sex tourism. More and more women are being pushed into becoming sex workers due to money worries, according to Arata Sakamoto, the head of a non-profit organization that assists sex workers.

"Due to various effects of COVID and other factors, relatively young women have started to sell sex for quite low prices, and I think this may be one of the reasons why the number of foreign people coming to solicit such services has increased," Sakamoto says.
