00:00...sending up against the clock.
00:01Oh, yes, yes, yes!
00:04To get NHS worker Mark, he's dreamed Caterham 7,
00:07whilst he's still healthy enough to enjoy it.
00:10It sounds to me that this could be your last hurrah.
00:12It could well be. I hope it isn't, but treat it as that,
00:15because it could well be.
00:16Bagging a top-of-the-range British sports car
00:19means taking some big risks.
00:21This is no ordinary motorbike. This is a fantastic one.
00:24I'm sure it is a good one when it's finished.
00:27Hopefully, we won't end up looking like a pair of clowns.
00:30Tell me you haven't bought it. Of course I've bought it.
00:32Who's going to buy that?
00:34Whoa! Yes!
00:37We've all got a dream car.
00:39For most, it remains out of reach.
00:42I've always said to myself when I was younger
00:44that when I get older, I'll buy one.
00:45But unfortunately, it's just been a dream.
00:47So, I'm taking on the ultimate trading challenge...
00:50Whoa! Now we're going!
00:52...to make motoring dreams come true.
00:54I know you can do it, Mark. I believe in you.
00:56I'm not Harry Potter.
00:58Here's how.
00:58I meet car lovers who hand over their daily drive.
01:01Where's the petrol flat?
01:02Oh, I think that flew off down the M1 on the way.
01:04And whatever savings they can spare.
01:06About £500.
01:07£500.
01:08For a series of trades,
01:10this is a monumental gamble.
01:12And money-making deals.
01:14I'll offer you £3,000.
01:15Hold out your hand.
01:16I'll trade up.
01:17Yeah, lovely.
01:18Until I've got enough money to buy the car they've always wanted.
01:21I can't express how happy I am.
01:23I'm crying.
01:25I'll draw on years of experience
01:27and share my tricks of the trade.
01:29If the weather's like this,
01:30I wouldn't get that roof working,
01:32we can sell this for more than double what I paid for it.
01:34Helping me in the workshop
01:35is ex-Formula 1 mechanic Elvis.
01:39It's such an inconvenient place to have to work this.
01:42It won't go forwards.
01:43It only goes backwards.
01:44Yeah.
01:44We've just wasted £2,300 of our money.
01:47The pressure is on.
01:48Oh, that's crazy.
01:49To deliver...
01:50You're joking.
01:51...that dream car.
01:52I've taken it.
01:53It's amazing.
02:00I'm on my way to go and meet Mark Childs.
02:03Now, Mark works for the NHS,
02:05so he's a good man.
02:07And his dream is to own a proper British classic sports car,
02:11a Caterham 7.
02:12Now, it's a special mission for us
02:16because Mark's had a tough time recently.
02:18Two years ago,
02:19he was diagnosed with something called colitis
02:21and needed major surgery.
02:23He then developed arthritis,
02:25which means that within a few years,
02:27he may not be able to walk.
02:29So, I'd love to get him his dream sports car
02:31whilst he can still enjoy it.
02:33Caterhams are iconic little sports cars
02:36and they're great fun to drive,
02:38so it's a really good choice.
02:39I also know Elvis is going to like that choice too
02:42because he used to work on them.
02:44Now, Mark, he's been saving for many years
02:46to get his dream car,
02:47but unfortunately,
02:48they're always just out of reach
02:50because although they're tiny, those little cars,
02:53they are rather expensive.
02:55And that's where I step in.
02:56I'm determined to help Mark out
02:58to get his dream car.
03:00With time running out for Mark
03:02to own this iconic little car,
03:04I've arranged to meet him
03:05and his son Tom
03:06at Caterham's biggest showroom.
03:08Here they are.
03:10Mark, Tom, how are you?
03:13Hiya, Mike.
03:13Good to see you.
03:14How are you doing?
03:15You all right?
03:16Seven-hour round trip for you, isn't it?
03:17Oh, well, it is, Matt,
03:18but what a trip, though.
03:19It's well worth it to come in
03:20and see all these cars like this.
03:22Fantastic. Fair play.
03:23What about you then, Tom?
03:24Which one takes your fancy?
03:25You're standing next to this yellow one
03:27or is it the little Lego one?
03:28Is that what takes your fancy?
03:30I like this one.
03:31You like this one?
03:32Yeah.
03:32It's cool, isn't it, eh?
03:33Yeah.
03:33It's a nice colour.
03:34I like the yellow.
03:35Shall we leave you to look around the cars
03:36and I'm going to have a chat with your dad?
03:37Is that right?
03:38Yeah.
03:38Yeah? All right.
03:39Come on, then.
03:41The Seven is Caterham's flagship model.
03:44They've been making them since 1973
03:46and I can tell you
03:47the driving experience is absolutely unique
03:50and most importantly,
03:51it's incredibly good fun.
03:53This choice tells me
03:55Mark's a man after my own heart.
03:57And Elvis's, too.
03:58One of his first jobs
04:00was for a Caterham race team.
04:02Yes, that's him.
04:02A 19-year-old sporting a dodgy haircut.
04:05He worked there before his days in F1.
04:07So I know he'll love Mark's choice.
04:10What do you do for a living?
04:11I work for Swansea Bay Health Board.
04:14I'm an information governance officer.
04:16For the NHS?
04:17For the NHS.
04:17I gather on NHS wages.
04:19It doesn't give you the disposable income
04:21for you to go out there
04:23and go and get your own Caterham.
04:24I think if I was in retirement age,
04:26maybe I would have been in a position
04:27to buy one,
04:27but certainly not now, anyway.
04:29You've got some ill health as well, haven't you?
04:31I have, yeah.
04:32Unfortunately,
04:33I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
04:36It couldn't be controlled with medication,
04:38so I ended up having
04:39two major bowel operations.
04:42Everything seemed to work out fine
04:43and then two years ago,
04:45I hyperextended my knee
04:47and that triggered something called
04:49entropathic arthritis.
04:50What a shame.
04:51I mean, what a shame.
04:52And I'm sorry to hear about your ill health.
04:54And being that you've got some arthritis coming,
04:56I mean, I don't want to be blunt,
04:57but this sounds to me
05:01like you owning a Caterham.
05:03It sounds to me
05:03that this could be your last hurrah.
05:05It could well be.
05:06I'm relatively controlled at the moment
05:08and lots of immunosuppressants
05:10and steroid injections,
05:11but if you'd have seen me
05:12about three weeks ago,
05:14I could barely walk.
05:15Why Caterham?
05:16What got you into Caterham?
05:17It's just that classic styling that I like
05:20and because it's, you know,
05:21load the ground,
05:23it's, I don't know,
05:23simple, simple con.
05:25I think that's what appeals to me, really.
05:27Not that I've driven one yet,
05:28but the experience of being that low to the ground,
05:31that's what I'm most looking forward to.
05:33What colour would you go for?
05:36Yellow is probably my favourite.
05:37Yellow with the black stripes.
05:38What happens if I do manage to get you a car
05:41you get in and you hate it?
05:42Oh, it's not going to happen.
05:43It's just not going to happen.
05:44I can't imagine in any world
05:45that's going to happen.
05:47Mark's a lovely guy
05:48and I'm determined to give him
05:49that experience behind the wheel
05:50of a Caterham 7.
05:52This is a big ask for me and Elvis
05:54because Caterham 7s
05:56are monumentally expensive,
05:58but none of that matters.
05:59What matters really
06:00is what car he's got in the car park
06:02to trade in.
06:04So tell me,
06:05is it the Fiat Arbath,
06:06the BMW?
06:09It's not this.
06:10The Honda Civic.
06:11And this made it all the way from Wales.
06:13It did.
06:15Oh, Mark.
06:18Doesn't look as bad as it is.
06:19Interior's good.
06:20How many miles has it done?
06:21125.
06:22You're kidding, really?
06:24Yeah.
06:24So let me get this right.
06:26The car you want
06:26is literally right there.
06:28Yeah.
06:29You want a Caterham 7.
06:30These are tens of thousands of pounds.
06:33I don't even think
06:34I could get a grand for this.
06:36So I'm kind of hoping
06:37that stuff in that centre console
06:39down there
06:40are tens of thousands of pounds
06:42to make the journey
06:42a little bit easier.
06:43It's not tens of thousands,
06:44several thousand.
06:45Huh?
06:46Five thousand.
06:47Five grand?
06:47Five grand.
06:48Get in.
06:49That means
06:49that I've got a good starting point.
06:51So leave it with me.
06:52Next time you see me,
06:54hopefully,
06:55it'll be with your dream car.
06:56Well, the task in front of me
06:58and Elvis
06:58is a massive one.
07:00I've seen these Caterham 7s
07:01sell upwards of
07:02£12,000.
07:04And look what we've got
07:05to start with,
07:05that old Honda Civic.
07:07But what with Mark's ill health
07:09and his last chance
07:10to get his dream car,
07:11me and Elvis,
07:12we have no choice
07:13but to pull it off.
07:18Well, Mark
07:19and his son Tom,
07:20what a lovely, lovely fellow.
07:22Having just a couple of years
07:23of good mobility left
07:24means that we have to work
07:26really fast
07:27to try and get in the car
07:28that he wants,
07:29his dream car,
07:30that lovely little Caterham.
07:31The first job
07:32is to get this car
07:33tidied up
07:34and I can get trading
07:35with that five granny
07:36he'd give me.
07:39Ha ha, mate.
07:402.2 litre diesel
07:42Type S Honda
07:43and it is a bit tired,
07:45I must admit,
07:46but we need to turn this
07:47into a dream car
07:49and he offers a lovely chap.
07:50He's called Mark,
07:51he's got a young son
07:52called Tom,
07:53he's got ill health
07:54and this is his sort of
07:56last chance
07:56to have his dream car
07:57and I said,
07:58me and you,
07:59we'll help.
07:59Yeah, and what's he after?
08:01Oh, you're going to like this.
08:02We've got to somehow
08:03turn this
08:04into a specific Caterham.
08:07We've got to turn this
08:08into a Caterham 7?
08:09A yellow Caterham 7,
08:10that's what your son
08:11Thomas has asked for,
08:12yeah, so it's a big challenge.
08:13That is specific.
08:14All right,
08:14well, I mean,
08:15what have we got to do to this?
08:16Well, the only things are,
08:17it's going to need
08:18a little bit of work
08:18on the suspension,
08:19I think it's going to need
08:20a couple of shocks.
08:21That's fine,
08:22it's not too bad,
08:22but it's still not
08:23going to be worth a fortune,
08:23is it?
08:24It's a long leap
08:24from this to a Caterham 7.
08:26Exactly, yeah.
08:27The good news is,
08:28he gave me five grand as well.
08:29Has he?
08:29So I can get trading
08:30with the five grand
08:31whilst you get this up together
08:33and we can get it sold.
08:34That's good, like it.
08:35Right, let's work.
08:36Well done, mate.
08:39Mike reckons there are some issues
08:40with the Honda's shocks,
08:41so that's my first job.
08:44And I can see it already.
08:45It's moist around this area
08:47and underneath the boot,
08:49which actually looks like
08:51it's split as well,
08:52is really quite wet,
08:54so the top of the shock absorber
08:55is leaking oil out.
08:57At the moment,
08:58it's not enough to fail an MOT,
08:59but the shocks
09:00will only continue to degenerate.
09:02So I'm going to replace
09:03the front pair now
09:04before they become a safety issue.
09:06I bought replacements online.
09:09They're about £80
09:10for a new shock absorber,
09:11I can reuse the spring
09:12and the top mount
09:13and everything else,
09:14and you don't want to just
09:15change one on its own,
09:16so I'm changing the front pair
09:17because that will give us
09:18a nice balanced ride
09:19moving forward.
09:22With the spring clamped
09:23in a spring compressor,
09:24it's an easy job.
09:26The new shock's attached
09:27using the same mounts
09:28and bolts as the old one.
09:30So whilst I've had this apart,
09:31I've checked that the bearings
09:33and the top mount
09:34are all OK,
09:34which they are,
09:35and now I've got to make sure
09:36the top mount goes back in
09:38in the same orientation
09:39that it came out.
09:40I thought we're basically
09:41good to go.
09:49There we go.
09:49That's one side done.
09:51I'm not saying
09:51that fitting new shocks
09:52is going to increase
09:53the car's value,
09:54but it might just help us
09:55get it sold,
09:56and on our journey
09:57towards Mark's Caterham 7,
09:58that could be just as important.
10:01Shock sorted,
10:02the car just needs
10:03a deep clean.
10:04Mike's going to advertise
10:05it nationally for £1,500.
10:06It's a great price
10:08as a starter car
10:09for a new driver.
10:12The next morning,
10:14Mike's messaged me
10:15saying he's got a surprise
10:16waiting in the workshop.
10:18What on earth is that?
10:26Look what I've delivered you.
10:27What is it?
10:28It's a clown's car.
10:29Well, I can see that.
10:30Tell me you haven't bought it.
10:31Of course I bought it.
10:32It was only £1,500.
10:33Are you joking?
10:34No.
10:35And who's going to buy that?
10:37Don't you think
10:37I've got a plan?
10:38I've always got a plan.
10:39This is a proper little thing.
10:41It belonged to Zippo the clown,
10:43the genuine real Zippo.
10:44Really?
10:45He sold it
10:46to the props company
10:47that I bought it from.
10:48This is a collector's item.
10:50We'll easily get it sold
10:51as long as you can get it running.
10:53OK.
10:54You've worked on cars
10:56that go 200 miles an hour.
10:57Just work on this
10:58that does 3 miles an hour.
10:59All you've got to do
11:00is collect the engine up.
11:01Look, it's just doing nothing
11:02in the back.
11:03It's just got a lawnmower engine
11:04dropped in the back.
11:06Ha ha.
11:06Whee!
11:08You can do it, pal.
11:10Next, I'm severely tempted
11:11to risk our pot
11:13on a 70s two-wheeler.
11:15This is a monumental gamble.
11:18Monumental gamble.
11:19And Elvis is worried
11:20the joke's on him
11:21with the clown car.
11:22If it smokes like a chimney,
11:25well, you might be looking
11:25at a brand-new engine.
11:26We're trying to make
11:35NHS worker Mark's dream
11:37of owning a Caterham 7
11:38come true.
11:39Where did you love
11:40a Caterham 7 come from?
11:41It's just that classic
11:42styling that I like.
11:43That's what appeals to me, really.
11:46Caterham's average
11:47around 12 grand,
11:48so I'm going to need
11:49to do several trades.
11:50Our latest
11:51is this clown car,
11:52but the engine
11:53doesn't run.
11:54And if it needs replacing,
11:55that's our profit all gone.
11:58It's fitted
11:58with this little
11:59Honda GX200,
12:01basically a lawnmower engine.
12:03I can already see
12:03that it's missing
12:04a clutch pack.
12:05Could be missing
12:06a whole load more than that,
12:07but luckily,
12:08I've got a neighbour next door
12:09who deals with these things
12:10for a living,
12:11so I'm going to go and see him.
12:13I wish all engines
12:14were that easy to get out.
12:16I know we need
12:16to order the centrifugal clutch,
12:18but if there's anything else missing,
12:19then my friend Mark
12:20is a man who can find the parts.
12:22What's this?
12:23Moving to the guard machinery.
12:26These motors are simple
12:27two-strokes,
12:28but they need to be looked after
12:29just like a car engine.
12:31I've checked,
12:32and there is no oil
12:33in the bottom of this thing,
12:34which might just be
12:35because someone's drained it out,
12:36or it could be
12:37something more sinister.
12:39But the only way to tell
12:39is to put some back in it,
12:41fire it up,
12:42and see what happens.
12:43If it smokes like a chimney,
12:45well,
12:45that could be really bad news,
12:46you know,
12:46because the piston rings
12:48around this thing,
12:48if they go,
12:49if they start to leak oil through
12:50and it's burnt that oil away,
12:51it can also score the bores,
12:54and at that point,
12:54you're probably into buying
12:55a new engine,
12:56which, in all honesty,
12:57will be all of our profit gone.
13:00Fingers crossed,
13:00a few quids worth of standard oil
13:02is all that's needed.
13:03Here we go.
13:20I'm actually really pleased
13:22that this thing runs.
13:23Massive relief,
13:24because now I can start
13:25to make a list of the bits that I need.
13:26Mark can get them for me.
13:28Clutch pack,
13:28air filter,
13:29a full service kit for this engine,
13:31and then, quite frankly,
13:32I'll be pleased to see the back of it.
13:35Once I've got the engine working,
13:36this quirky little car
13:38should be able to pull off
13:38its old circus tricks again.
13:42Well, if we're ever going to get
13:43that catering for Mark,
13:44we are going to need
13:45to sell his trading car,
13:46which is this little Honda.
13:48Now, Elvis has done some great work
13:49getting it ship-shaped.
13:50I've advertised it out there online.
13:52I've been inundated with people.
13:53This guy behind me,
13:54Dean,
13:55and his daughter, Rosie,
13:56they're first here.
13:57He likes it.
13:58Doesn't want to buy it.
13:59So then, Dean.
14:01Hi, Mike.
14:02First up,
14:02why a Honda Civic?
14:04Looking for a reliable diesel for work.
14:06Nice.
14:06You do a lot of miles?
14:07A lot of miles,
14:08between 200 and 400 a week.
14:09You're going to need
14:10something that's reliable.
14:11Plus,
14:11they do sort of drive
14:12like a petrol car as well.
14:14They're quite powerful,
14:15these,
14:15your Honda Civics.
14:16Excellent.
14:17OK,
14:17does Rosie give it a thumbs up
14:19or a thumbs up?
14:19Thumbs up from Rosie.
14:21Nice one.
14:22Well, listen,
14:22I've put it out there online.
14:23I've been inundated
14:24with people
14:25beating the path to my door.
14:26You're here first.
14:28I do need £1,500 for it.
14:29I think I'm going to get that.
14:30So what do you say?
14:31£1,500, Mike.
14:32It's a deal.
14:33Nice one.
14:34Thanks.
14:34Well done, Rosie.
14:36Pound it.
14:36Boom.
14:37Well done.
14:40Mark gave us
14:41five grand of his own cash.
14:43We spent
14:43£160
14:44on new shocks
14:45for the Civic
14:45and sold it
14:46for £1,500,
14:48which means
14:48we got
14:49£4,840
14:51in a dream car fund
14:53and a clown car to sell.
14:55Not a bad start.
14:56And Elvis
14:57has some more good news.
14:59What is that?
15:02Oh, yes!
15:04Oh, mate!
15:06Oh, that is fantastic!
15:07Isn't it cool?
15:08It's a breeze!
15:09That is brilliant.
15:11I never thought
15:11I'd see the day.
15:12Amazing, isn't it?
15:13It is absolutely fantastic.
15:14Oh, Elvis,
15:15it is wicked.
15:16Is that the comedy horn?
15:17I like it, yeah, very good.
15:18I've got another couple
15:19of mods I've fitted as well.
15:20Oh, that's brilliant!
15:26It is every inch.
15:27That coloured smoke?
15:29It's every inch
15:31what I thought it would be.
15:32It's a proper clown car.
15:34Mate, you've absolutely nailed it.
15:35You really have.
15:37Give £1,500 for it.
15:38With all your hard work,
15:39we've not really spent anything,
15:40have we?
15:40Not really, no.
15:41All I did was fit the engine,
15:42replace the clutch pad.
15:44Elvis has smashed it
15:46with a clown car.
15:46He's literally
15:47knocked it out.
15:48The circus ring,
15:49he really has.
15:49Now I've got it listed online,
15:51I'm hoping to get
15:52around £2,000 for it
15:54and what were the history
15:55I know
15:55and the providence
15:56I hope
15:57and it's going to appeal
15:58to a collector
15:59and we'll get it sold.
16:00A week later,
16:02the online auction
16:03for the clown car
16:04has ended.
16:05We received plenty of offers
16:07and I'm meeting
16:08the winning bidder
16:08so they can inspect
16:09and collect it.
16:10Some may think
16:11I'm a bit of a clown
16:12when I go out
16:13and buy a clown car
16:14but actually
16:14I'm the one that won
16:15because I advertised it
16:17on an online auction site
16:18and I got bids
16:19from all over the world.
16:20I even had
16:21Zippo the clown himself
16:22comment on the listing
16:24and the bid started
16:25to increase.
16:26We have 41 in total.
16:28This chap behind me
16:29was the winning bidder.
16:30He's called Mike.
16:31He's come all the way
16:31down from Barnsley.
16:33Remember,
16:33he's already bought the car.
16:35Does he want to take it?
16:37Mike, you still happy?
16:38Very happy.
16:39Lovely.
16:39Yeah, it's a wonderful thing,
16:41isn't it?
16:41So what do you want
16:42to buy it for?
16:43I bought it purely
16:44for my little son.
16:44Oh really?
16:45He can potter around in it.
16:46And he can be a clown.
16:47He can be a clown.
16:48There's a button there
16:49to make a smoke canister go off.
16:51There's another one
16:52that these squirters
16:53squirt water everywhere.
16:54Oh great.
16:55I think the doors ping off
16:56if you want them to.
16:58So yeah,
16:58he can have a lot of fun
16:59with this.
16:59He really can.
17:00So you've already got
17:01a nice yellow Mustang.
17:02You've got to park
17:03this one next to it?
17:04I am.
17:04It'll take pride in place.
17:05Nice one.
17:06Well listen,
17:06you were the winning bidder
17:07at £2,300.
17:09Are you still happy
17:09to agree to that?
17:11100% Mike.
17:11Super.
17:12Thank you very much.
17:13You bought yourself
17:13a nice little clown car.
17:14Which means we've got
17:17£6,890 in the dream car fund.
17:20Not bad,
17:21but still barely halfway
17:22to the £12,000 or so
17:24needed for Mark's catering.
17:26So I'm off to see
17:27another flip
17:27which has the potential
17:28for a big profit.
17:30Now I love cars.
17:31Anyone would tell you that.
17:32But what you might not know
17:33is I also love motorbikes too.
17:35Much to my wife's dismay.
17:38Now I've got wind
17:38of a bike that's just
17:39come onto the market.
17:40It's one of my favourite
17:41all-time bikes.
17:42It's a CB750,
17:44like the original Superbike.
17:46Belongs to a guy called Andy.
17:47He actually restores bikes
17:49but he's got too many projects on
17:51and this one is just
17:52too much for him.
17:53So I have seen these bikes
17:55sell for thousands of pounds
17:56because they are such
17:58a sought after
17:59and collector's item.
18:01Andy?
18:02Hello.
18:03Mike, how are you doing?
18:04Very nice to meet you.
18:05Nice to meet you.
18:06Yeah, fantastic.
18:06What a place.
18:07This is amazing, isn't it?
18:08Yeah.
18:08You've got bikes everywhere.
18:10This is my kind of wheelhouse.
18:12Right, okay.
18:13So CB750.
18:15Yep.
18:16Iconic bike.
18:17First real Superbike.
18:19Nice, okay.
18:20What year is this one?
18:21This is a 1972.
18:23They came out in 69.
18:2469.
18:25And they sort of finished off
18:26the British motorcycle industry
18:28because they were the first
18:29proper four-cylinder motorbike.
18:31Had a disc brake.
18:33Electric starter.
18:34It was a revelation.
18:35Revolution.
18:36You know,
18:37the bits that I can see
18:38are absolutely astonishing.
18:39I've been right through the engine.
18:41It's had anything that needed doing.
18:43It's had all the bearings,
18:44all the seals.
18:45What's here is all done.
18:47Right, but what's not here
18:49is the bits that are worrying me.
18:53There's a few bits
18:54that you've got to get.
18:55Okay, so talk me through them.
18:57Where's the saddle?
18:58Got the saddle there.
18:59Okay, so we've got a saddle.
19:00Brand new fuel tank.
19:02No rust.
19:02That's wonderful.
19:04The biggest worry, though,
19:05is that it doesn't have
19:06the right exhaust.
19:07The original four-pipe,
19:09like this one.
19:10If I was to market this bike
19:12without four pipes,
19:13what's it worth?
19:14Between five and six grand.
19:16And with the correct exhaust pipe on it?
19:17With the correct exhaust,
19:19it's going to put
19:19a couple of grand on it.
19:20Is it really?
19:21Yeah.
19:21As much as that?
19:22Yeah.
19:22Oh, that is the problem, isn't it?
19:26That really is the big issue.
19:28Because how much do you want for this?
19:30Five grand.
19:32This is a monumental gamble.
19:35Monumental gamble.
19:36Yeah, but you like a gamble.
19:37I do like a gamble.
19:39I'll give you four and a half grand for it.
19:40No, no, no.
19:41Five grand.
19:42I can't do five grand.
19:43I've got to have a little bit
19:44of something back.
19:45Put it this way.
19:47It's going to be at least
19:48£200 worth of phone calls
19:50around the world
19:51to find one.
19:52Okay.
19:53So please give me a look.
19:53I'll give you the £200.
19:55£4,800.
19:57What have I just done?
19:58What have I just done?
20:00Oh, I hope this is going to kill me.
20:05And he seems like a lovely guy
20:06and a real bike enthusiast,
20:08but I don't know
20:09what I've just done.
20:10If I can't find
20:11the original exhaust,
20:13which I know
20:13is as rare as hen's teeth,
20:15we could be in trouble.
20:24Oh, it's not very often
20:25you bring me a bike,
20:26but I love it when you do.
20:27I like to challenge you,
20:29and this is no ordinary motorbike.
20:30This is a fantastic one.
20:32I'm sure it is a good one
20:33when it's finished.
20:34It's missing some bits.
20:36I've got the bits in here.
20:37Well, I'll say
20:37I've got the bits.
20:38I've got most of the bits.
20:41Let's have a look.
20:42Oh, wow.
20:44Look at that.
20:44All painted, ready to go.
20:45Lovely.
20:46So you've got a nice petrol tank
20:47and a saddle.
20:48That's in the back of the car.
20:49Fantastic.
20:50What's missing then?
20:51The exhaust is missing.
20:53Okay.
20:53We'll just buy a new one.
20:55They're unobtainium.
20:56They don't exist.
20:57I've gone and spent...
20:59£4,800.
21:00But if I can find the exhaust,
21:02that is going to turn itself
21:04into a seven or eight grand motorbike.
21:07That's a healthy profit.
21:08But it all hinges
21:09on being able to find a part
21:10that no one else seemingly
21:11has been able to find so far.
21:13I've got a, you know,
21:14a contacts book.
21:15It reaches globally.
21:16So I'm just going to see
21:17if I can find this an exhaust.
21:18And if I can,
21:20then we're in the profits.
21:21Good luck, mate.
21:25Next, I play hardball
21:26to try and bring us closer
21:27to Mark's dream car.
21:29You said you'd take an offer.
21:30So how good is this one?
21:31Ready?
21:32£10,000.
21:34No.
21:34But everything hinges
21:36on that Honda exhaust.
21:38I've got some good news
21:39and some bad news
21:40about our Honda motorbike.
21:41We haven't got time
21:42for more bad news, mate.
21:51NHS worker Mark
21:53has struggled with his health
21:54over the past few years.
21:55So we'd love to get him
21:57his dream catering seven.
21:59I was diagnosed
22:00with ulcerative colitis.
22:01So I ended up having
22:02two major bowel operatives.
22:04What a shame.
22:05We'll need to raise
22:06over £12,000 for the seven.
22:08So I've gambled
22:09on this classic Honda motorbike.
22:11And I've spent
22:12the last few weeks
22:12hunting for a replacement exhaust.
22:15Elvis, you've got a minute.
22:16I've got some good news
22:17and some bad news
22:18about our Honda motorbike.
22:19We haven't got time
22:20for more bad news, mate.
22:21I've found one supplier
22:23in the UK
22:24for the exhaust
22:24called David Silver.
22:26He's got a six-month waiting list
22:27and it's £1,500.
22:29Why are you saying that
22:30with a smile on your face?
22:31Because he's just phoned me
22:32and said a customer
22:33has returned his exhaust.
22:34He no longer needs it.
22:35And we can have it for cost.
22:37That is amazing.
22:38Nice work.
22:39I knew your black book
22:39would come in handy.
22:40Just never give up.
22:41That's what I say.
22:42Never give up.
22:43The next morning
22:45I've taken delivery
22:46of the exhaust
22:47that Mike's found.
22:48So all I've got to do now
22:49is get it fitted.
22:53Right.
22:55That's the first bit.
22:56Getting the old one off.
22:58The new exhaust
22:59is made to measure
23:00so I just need to connect
23:01up those four tailpipes
23:03and it should sit
23:03in place perfectly.
23:13It was this
23:27four individual tailpipes
23:29that made this bike
23:30look so unique
23:31and it's already starting
23:32to look like it should do.
23:35Then it's the moment of truth.
23:40Well, the bike now looks amazing
23:42but it's all very well
23:43looking good.
23:44It's got to sound good too
23:45and so I'm going to fire it up
23:47and see what those
23:48new exhausts
23:49what they sound like.
23:51Here we go.
23:56Oh, yes!
23:58Straight away as well.
24:02Oh, it sounds so good.
24:06Oh, that's amazing.
24:07Oh, I'm so happy.
24:09That is just brilliant.
24:10I kind of want to keep it.
24:13What a bike.
24:16Mike can now put this up
24:17for sale for up to
24:18eight grand
24:18after buying it
24:19for just 4,800 plus parts.
24:22With his network of contacts
24:23he should be able
24:24to find a collector
24:25keen to buy
24:26this iconic superbike.
24:27I had a feeling
24:33our Honda bike
24:33would prove popular
24:34and I was right.
24:36I've had lots of people
24:37asking about it online
24:38and I've managed
24:39to get it sold.
24:40Ah, look at that.
24:42It's lovely.
24:43These are pictures
24:44I've just been sent in
24:45from a guy called Andy
24:47who has bought
24:48a Honda 750 motorcycle.
24:51Now, I sold him
24:52the bike online.
24:53I was hoping he was
24:54going to come here
24:55and pick it up.
24:55He's asked me
24:56to deliver it to him
24:57and now he's received it.
24:59He sent me some pictures
25:00of him looking very happy.
25:01I bought off a guy
25:02called Andy
25:03and I've sold it
25:04to a guy called Andy
25:05so it's done
25:05a full circle.
25:07Now, the real surprise
25:08is I was only hoping
25:09to get £7,500
25:11for the bike
25:12but actually
25:13it's done better than that.
25:14I managed to get
25:14£8,000 for it.
25:16My gamble
25:17on the Honda bike
25:18paid off.
25:19I bagged us
25:20an exhaust
25:20for just £900
25:21and we sold the bike
25:22for £8,000
25:23which means
25:25we've got £9,190
25:27in the Dream Car Fund.
25:29Not bad
25:30but we're still
25:31£3,000 or £4,000
25:31short of what we need.
25:33I'm desperate
25:34to get Mark
25:34and his son Tom
25:35that Caterham.
25:36So, I've hatched a plan.
25:38Now, today is going
25:39to be a good day
25:40because I'm on my way
25:41to go and see
25:41one of my favourite
25:42all-time cars.
25:43I'm talking about
25:44a BMW E46 M3.
25:48I've had my eye
25:48on it for quite a while.
25:49It's been on the market
25:50for ages, this car
25:51and I've worked out
25:52why it hasn't sold.
25:53It's got too many
25:55personalised modifications
25:56on it
25:57and they're things
25:57that people
25:58don't really like
25:59when they're looking
25:59through the adverts.
26:01Now, the car
26:01belongs to a guy
26:02he's had it advertised
26:03for a while
26:04so I think
26:05he'd be willing
26:05to do a deal.
26:06He is asking
26:07£13,000 for it.
26:10Now, the truth is
26:10in the pot
26:11at the moment
26:11I don't have
26:12£13,000
26:13I've only got
26:13£9,000
26:14but I'm so excited
26:15by the prospect
26:16of the car
26:17that I'm kind of
26:18willing to put
26:19my own money in
26:20to buy it
26:21if I can buy it
26:22and then if I sell it
26:23in the future
26:24then I'll take
26:25my money back
26:25out of it.
26:26It's a massive risk
26:28but I feel
26:28it could be
26:29the only way
26:30we'll ever pay
26:31for Mark's catering.
26:32I could be
26:33in my own
26:33little toy shop here
26:35look,
26:35Ferrari, California
26:36BMW M3
26:37that's nice
26:38isn't it
26:38and that lovely
26:39but I've come
26:39to see this
26:40this E46
26:41BMW M3 coupe
26:44wow
26:45you must be Sergio
26:47Hi Mike
26:48Sergio, lovely to meet you
26:49nice of you to see
26:50and you
26:50so this is the one
26:51is it?
26:51Yes it is indeed
26:52OK
26:52right
26:53BMW E46 M3
26:55it looks like
26:57somebody's had a go
26:58at doing some kind
26:59of personal modification
27:00big wheels
27:01tinted glass
27:02little spoiler
27:03on the boot
27:03this has been
27:05made for somebody's
27:07specific taste
27:08and it's not
27:09everyone's taste
27:09you know
27:10you need to lose
27:11the tinted glass
27:12that little boot
27:12spoiler
27:13change the wheels
27:14and then it'll
27:15probably sell
27:15why haven't you
27:16done it
27:16you're a carriage
27:17it's just time
27:18just time
27:19you've got the time
27:20to do it
27:20would you mind
27:22if I take a quick spin
27:22no I'll be very happy
27:24the keys are inside

27:27yeah
27:27I'll see you shortly
27:28oh yes
27:37yes
27:38yes
27:39yes
27:40it's got an M badge
27:41on it for a reason
27:42this is BMW's
27:44motorsport division
27:45this is fine-tuned
27:47to make sure
27:48it's poised
27:49it's balanced
27:50it handles beautifully
27:51and it rides
27:52fantastically
27:53and it gives you
27:54all of that power
27:55underneath the right foot
27:57and yet it takes
27:58somebody to come along
27:59and ruin it all
28:01because they have
28:02with this car
28:03they put great big wheels
28:04and little weenie slick
28:06tyres on
28:06and that's compromised
28:07the ride
28:08now Serge is asking
28:1013 and a half grand
28:11he said
28:12but he said
28:12that he would take
28:13an offer on that
28:14but I'm going to go back
28:14and be a bit cheeky
28:15I'm going to go back
28:16and aim to get this car
28:18for 11 grand
28:19that's my target price
28:20see if I can make it work
28:22look at the boss man
28:28sitting behind the desk
28:29service history
28:31no I just got it ready for you
28:32spare set of keys
28:34well listen
28:35it drives lovely
28:36it really does
28:37it drives really well
28:38I just think
28:39all the stuff
28:39has got to come off of it
28:40you know
28:41and that's
28:41that's the only way
28:42I'm going to get that car sold
28:43so I like it
28:44but I'm going to be
28:45a little bit tough with you
28:46you said 13 and a half
28:49on the phone
28:50but you said
28:50you'd take an offer
28:51so how good is this one
28:52ready
28:5310,000
28:54no
28:55um
28:57I'll do 12
28:5812 grand
29:00yes
29:01I think I can sell it
29:03for 12
29:04I'll meet you in the middle
29:0511 grand
29:06that's it
29:06come on
29:08all right
29:09yes
29:10you're a top man
29:11thank you for that
29:12what a cracking deal
29:1211 grand
29:1911 grand
29:20for any 46 BMW M3
29:23sometimes I even surprise myself
29:25yes I know this car
29:27has got a few little issues with it
29:29things that we need to sort out
29:30but none of them are mechanical
29:3211 grand
29:33I reckon I've definitely got a profit
29:35in this car
29:36but after topping up the dream car fund
29:39with two grand
29:40I really need to get this car sold
29:42next I'm praying
29:45my BMW gamble
29:46doesn't backfire
29:4815,000 pounds
29:50what do you think
29:51I'll be up here at 14
29:52and is Elvis
29:53getting above his station
29:55he might have found us a car
29:56that's my job
29:57we've been flipping cars
30:07left and right
30:08to try and get
30:08NHS worker
30:09Marky's dream
30:10Caterham 7
30:11to reach the 12 grand plus we need
30:14I put an extra 2,000 pounds
30:16into the pot to buy this heavily modded
30:18BMW M3
30:19it cost a bargain
30:2111 grand
30:22but if we strip it back
30:24there's money to be made
30:25very nice mate
30:27like it
30:28very nice
30:29E46
30:30BMW M3
30:31I mean what's not to like
30:33love these things
30:34they're amazing cars
30:35I mean how much you pay for it
30:36it looks immaculate
30:3711 grand
30:37that's pretty good
30:39I think what this car is screaming out for
30:41is going back to being original
30:42so a nice set of original wheels
30:44on this car
30:45would really help
30:46plus
30:46if we did something
30:47about the calipers
30:48the fact they're orange
30:50it doesn't really work in orange
30:52does it
30:53I'd agree with you
30:54I mean you could change
30:55the colour of the calipers
30:55I mean
30:56BMW used to do that
30:57motorsport blue
30:58they called it
30:59do you remember that
30:59yeah
31:00I mean that would look great
31:01on those wouldn't it
31:01if we had blue calipers
31:02standard wheels
31:03deleted the window tint
31:05got rid of that boot spoiler
31:06and then done the interior
31:08this could be a 15 grand car
31:10quite easily
31:11yeah
31:11alright
31:11well let's go with that then
31:12alright
31:12well let's crack on
31:13there are some jobs
31:17I really don't like
31:18but taking the horrible mods
31:19off this beautiful beamer
31:20will be a joy
31:21first up
31:22the window tints
31:23now typically
31:25they are a film
31:27like a dark film
31:28applied to the inside
31:29so
31:29start warming it up
31:31and hopefully
31:31you're going to
31:32peel it off easily
31:33there's two tips here
31:35one is to
31:36take your time
31:37don't rush it
31:37and the other
31:38is to use the heat gun
31:39to heat up the area
31:41ahead
31:41of where you're peeling off
31:43so heat up the next bit
31:45that you're about to peel
31:45and it should
31:46just gradually peel away
31:49there we go
31:52that's very satisfying that is
31:54I'm also going to use the heat gun
31:57to get the spoiler off
31:58it's bonded on with glue
32:00so with a blast of hot air
32:01and some gentle persuasion
32:02it should come off
32:03come on
32:04oh yes
32:07there we go
32:08oh my goodness
32:10there's no way
32:11that was flying off
32:12down the motor
32:12is there
32:13blimey
32:14that is some pretty impressive glue
32:16that's going to need a clean up
32:18but it's going to look much better
32:20with a bit of elbow grease
32:25the glue's off
32:26and then it's on to the final job
32:28now the value of this car
32:34is in its originality
32:35although it pains me to say it
32:37these 19 inch aftermarket rims
32:39have got to go
32:40but it's not all bad news
32:41because they're in great condition
32:43they've got a brand new set of tyres on as well
32:45so it will be worth
32:45a considerable sum of money
32:47I'll repaint the calipers
32:50in BMW's own motorsport blue
32:53to complement the silver bodywork
32:54with new wheels on
32:55it can go up for sale
32:56now in its original state
32:58we can hopefully get 15 grand for it
33:01today is a day of mixed emotions for me
33:07it's never easy saying goodbye
33:09to a cracking car like this BMW M3
33:11and the good news is
33:12whatever we've taken off of it
33:15which is the wheels and the trim
33:17I put those up online
33:18and I managed to sell it all
33:19for £1,020
33:20and then I bought an original set of wheels
33:24and tyres
33:25and some new trim for the inside
33:27and I spent
33:28yeah £1,020
33:30so we're level where we are with spending
33:32now I just need to make a profit
33:35this chap behind me
33:36he's called Jim
33:37he's come down and looked at the car
33:38on behalf of his son-in-law
33:40I've just taken him for a test drive
33:42and he's been grinning from ear to ear
33:44so let's see if I can put a deal together
33:46so then Jim
33:47you still like what you see?
33:49oh yes
33:49this is for your son-in-law
33:51it is
33:51yes
33:52so he's given you authority
33:54to go and do a deal on his behalf
33:56has he?
33:56he has
33:56yeah
33:57okay
33:57and I think I've got it out there
33:59at a really good market price
34:02at £15,000
34:03what do you think?
34:05I'll be up here at £14,000
34:07it's not even your money
34:09if I don't sell it to you
34:11I'm going to sell it to somebody else tomorrow
34:13it's that good a car
34:15so unfortunately
34:16it's got to be £15,000 or nothing
34:18I think that's what it's got to be
34:20okay
34:22let's do it
34:23lovely
34:23got yourself a cracking car
34:25well done
34:25as I hope
34:27the M3 was a masterstroke
34:29we sold it for £15,000
34:31which means we've been able to recoup
34:33the £2,000 I added to the trading pot
34:35and we're still left with £13,190
34:40in our dream car fund
34:42so that means we've done it
34:43and we can now finally start looking
34:45for a catering for Mark
34:46mate quick one
34:48yeah
34:49how much money have we got in the pot
34:51for Mark's catering at the moment?
34:52well funny you should mention that
34:53I've just been going through the spreadsheet
34:54we are at
34:55a very healthy £13,000
34:58that is really good
34:59because I might have found us a car
35:01that's my job
35:02I know it is
35:03but I've phoned around a few of my mates
35:04in the catering world
35:05and I've found one
35:06it's cheap
35:07it's not the right colour either
35:08because he wanted a yellow one
35:09his son wanted a yellow one
35:10well it's not yellow
35:11and because it's cheap
35:13I mean I don't know
35:13there might be some things wrong with it
35:14but it's cheap enough
35:15that I think it's worth going to see
35:16lovely
35:17give me the address
35:18I'll go and have a look
35:18well I was thinking
35:19I might go and have a look at it
35:20well keep me informed
35:21let me know how it goes
35:22I'll let you know
35:23nice one
35:24caterings usually get bashed around
35:27on the racetrack
35:28so it's rare to find a decent example
35:29but this one looks in good nick
35:32so I'm happy to make the three hour journey
35:33up north to have a look
35:35it's been a huge amount of work
35:37for Mike and I
35:38to get from Mark's Honda Civic
35:39to right here in Preston
35:41where I'm about to meet Julian
35:42Julian's a friend of a friend
35:44who's selling a Caterham 7
35:45at a price that we can afford
35:48a price so good in fact
35:49that I'm a little bit wary
35:50about how much work it might take
35:52to turn it into the car of Mark's dreams
35:54Julian
35:56hello mate
35:57how are you doing
35:59how are you doing
35:59great you
35:59yeah very well
36:00look at this
36:01I see you're a man
36:02after my own heart
36:03you've got racing cars in your garage
36:04that's the dream
36:05absolutely yes
36:06yeah racing's in the blood
36:07well what's the story then
36:08you've got two of them
36:09well I've had this for a number of years now
36:10and absolutely loved it
36:12I loved it so much
36:13I basically decided to
36:14do the Caterham Academy this year
36:16with a group of friends
36:17so you're going racing
36:18so I'm racing
36:18and that means that
36:19the one that you used to use on the road
36:21is surplus requirements
36:22it's basically surplus requirements now
36:23they are brilliant cars
36:25I mean it takes me back
36:26because this is where I started
36:27my motorsport journey
36:28I must have built 20 of these things
36:29is there anything wrong with it
36:31that I need to know about
36:31before I start poking around
36:32no it's been really well looked after
36:33it's a really clean car
36:35mechanically it's sound
36:36mind if I pop the bonnet off
36:38feel free
36:38oh there we go
36:39look at that
36:40it's nice and tidy in there
36:41how's it drive
36:42the only one way to find out
36:44it's been a long time
36:50since I've been back
36:51behind the wheel
36:51at one of these things
36:52oh my goodness
36:59come straight back
37:01oh what a feeling
37:03the wind's rushing through your hair
37:05if you are going to buy a Caterham
37:10and you definitely should
37:12because they're just awesome
37:13find one that's been well looked after
37:16like this one has
37:17it's got a full service history
37:18many of these things
37:20have been taken to racetracks
37:22and those cars
37:23well they get a slightly harder life
37:25this one sounds fine though
37:26and at 12 and a half grand
37:28that leaves us around
37:291,000 pounds left
37:31in our kitty
37:31that we've managed to accumulate
37:33to spend on it
37:34and whilst there's no major
37:35mechanical work to do
37:36it's in great condition
37:38I think I do know exactly
37:39where I'm going to put that money
37:40how was it
37:50I mean I love it
37:51oh goodness me
37:52they're just brilliant
37:53I mean they're amazing
37:55I've forgotten how much fun
37:56they were to drive
37:57they are great aren't they
37:58absolutely great
37:58just brilliant
37:59I mean you're asking 12,500 for it right
38:02yeah 12,500
38:03I love it so much
38:04I can't get rid of the swan of my face
38:06I'm not even going to argue with you
38:07I'll take it
38:08great
38:08thanks mate
38:09I can't believe it
38:11thanks buddy
38:12Mark's son Tom told Mike
38:15his favourite colour catering is yellow
38:17with the money left over
38:18in our dream car fund
38:20we can add that colour
38:21so I've put in a call to Henry
38:22our brilliant vinyl car wrapper
38:24hello mate
38:27how are we doing
38:28yeah good good
38:30well this is the thing I was telling you about mate
38:33which to me looks like an absolute nightmare to wrap
38:35because I mean these things look like hideous
38:38yeah they're not the easiest things to wrap
38:40that is what I was talking about
38:44can you turn that into something like that
38:46come with me we'll have a look
38:49alright
38:50a wrap is not only cheaper than a paint job
38:57it can also be easily removed
38:59if Mark wants to revert to the car's original colour
39:02plus the bodywork underneath
39:04will still be in pristine condition
39:06our catering is starting to look fantastic
39:09and the sooner we get it done of course
39:10the sooner I can show Mike
39:12and then we can hand it over to Mark
39:14and I know he's going to love it
39:15but will Mike
39:17as he hates yellow cars so much
39:19it's been a long old journey
39:23since I first met Mark
39:24today I've laid on a special catering meet
39:27in Chepstow South Wales
39:29and invited Mark and his son Tom
39:31they think they're coming for a catch up
39:33so they have no idea
39:34they'll soon be driving back home
39:36in their very own Catering 7
39:38well the cars are all set up
39:40on my little catering event
39:41Mark and Tom
39:42they're on their way down
39:43and Elvis is on his way in
39:45with that little catering
39:46and guess what
39:46I haven't even seen the car yet
39:48I can't wait
39:49oh yes
39:55oh mate you've absolutely nailed that
39:57honestly
39:58sometimes you just blow me away
40:01I mean I know you hate yellow cars
40:02but how about this
40:03it suits it doesn't it
40:04I don't mind it being in yellow
40:05because it's not for me
40:06I haven't got to drive it
40:07but it looks blooming brilliant
40:08doesn't it
40:08it's more than I expected
40:10I'll be honest with you
40:10what's it drive like
40:11oh man I've never not wanted
40:13to hand a car over
40:14more than this one
40:14it's so good
40:15it's just
40:16you're so connected to the road
40:17I mean Mark's going to love it
40:18he will love it
40:19and this is last chance saloon
40:20for him to go and enjoy
40:21a car like this
40:22and well
40:23he can enjoy it
40:24with some of his new friends
40:25here look at this
40:26I was just going to say
40:27you have smashed this mate
40:28what a set up
40:29hey I can organise
40:30a little car show
40:31whenever you want one
40:32it's absolutely brilliant
40:33lovely people

40:53unreal
40:53isn't this nice
40:54do you want to come and see some cars
40:55hey that's why we're here isn't it
40:56you can see it's a lovely community
40:58of people
40:58that have come down
40:59and bought their cars
41:00but what do you think
41:01it would do to you
41:02to have
41:02your very own Caterham 7
41:04I think well for him
41:06you'd be chilling off
41:07with your friends in school
41:08but just open another
41:10sort of thing for us to do
41:12sort of car meets
41:14and things like that
41:14where you know
41:15you wouldn't want to rock up
41:16in a Honda Civic
41:16no
41:17remember when we went
41:18to the Caterham factory
41:19do you remember that time
41:20yeah
41:20and we were looking around the cars
41:22you said to me
41:23it was you
41:24you said that you'd like
41:25a yellow Caterham
41:27yeah
