'Father's Little Dividend' is a "1951 American comedy film" directed by Vincente Minnelli. A sequel to 'Father of the Bride', the film follows "Stanley Banks", played by Spencer Tracy, as he struggles to come to terms with becoming a grandfather. As his daughter Kay prepares for motherhood, Stanley finds himself caught in the whirlwind of family excitement, unsolicited advice, and humorous misunderstandings. With "charming performances, witty dialogue, and heartfelt moments", this film remains a delightful classic of early 1950s cinema.

00:01:00Ellie
00:01:18Ellie, hurry up. We've only got five minutes.
00:01:21I'll be right down.
00:01:30I'd like to say a few words about what's happened to me over the past year.
00:01:47You women may not sympathize. You think men have it easy, but that's where you're wrong.
00:01:50Man is a very delicate and sensitive mechanism. If you treat him right, you flatter him and butter him up a little bit. He's good for years.
00:01:59But if somebody rocks the boat, well, you know how it is, men. You work hard for years trying to build a home, raise a family.
00:02:11And then comes one wonderful day when, for the first time in your life, you feel you're a little ahead of the game. Things have eased up at the office. The kids are all set. Married or well along in school or both. And you're raring to go.
00:02:24You think of all the wonderful things you would have done in your life if you'd have just had time.
00:02:32If you go fishing. If you go big game hunting. You might even climb Mount Everest. Anyway, you're on top of the world. You begin to feel you're a combination of Don Juan and Columbus.
00:02:44And that's just the moment they choose to let you have it.
00:02:51I remember it was just a year ago today. I caught my usual commuter's train. It was late as usual. It was such a beautiful day that I let the bus go by and walked home from the station.
00:03:05It was one of those first warm days in May when everything seems to come to life. I felt particularly well.
00:03:12I was thinking what a lucky man I was, with a nice house all paid for, three children all paid for, and a beautiful wife.
00:03:24Ellie!
00:03:26Hi, boy. Hello, Don.
00:03:28Ellie, I'm home.
00:03:30Coming.
00:03:33Ellie was radiant that night. She seemed to be floating on air.
00:03:37Stanley, what kept you? It's late.
00:03:39Such a nice day I walked.
00:03:40Stanley!
00:03:49Stanley!
00:03:50What's the matter? Can't a fellow kiss his wife?
00:03:55Oh, you won't have time to change. We have to start right away.
00:03:57Why? Where are we going?
00:03:58Okay, and Buckley asked us their appointment for dinner tonight.
00:04:01She found this morning, said she had some good news.
00:04:03Oh, oh, Buckley put over the deal, I guess, with the chain stores, huh? That plastic bag of his?
00:04:07Oh, I don't think that's their big news. I think it's something much more important than that.
00:04:11More important than that? Why? That means thousands of dollars. I don't know. What could be more important than that?
00:04:15Something?
00:04:16Nothing.
00:04:17Get my coat, will you, dear?
00:04:18Yeah.
00:04:19Night, Tommy. Night, Ben.
00:04:20Night, Mommy.
00:04:21Kay said she was sorry she couldn't have you, too, but she had to have Buckley's father and much.
00:04:26Is Kay going to cook?
00:04:27Mm-hmm.
00:04:28You better take your bicarb with you.
00:04:29Oh, no.
00:04:30Oh, boy, don't keep going.
00:04:31Son, Son, your jokes get funnier every year.
00:04:33Stanley, please, I promise that you could go to the movies.
00:04:34Ben, you drop her on your way to the game.
00:04:36Okay.
00:04:37Oh, and, uh, Delilah, stack to the dishes and throw out with you and miss the first of the pictures.
00:04:43Uh, Tommy, don't study too late and remember, if the rug man calls, tell him to call again.
00:04:47Stanley.
00:04:49What's got into you?
00:04:51It's spring.
00:04:52It must be.
00:04:55Yes, sir, we're in a rut, Ellie.
00:04:59Not that it isn't a pleasant rut, but I think we ought to get out of it.
00:05:02You know, you're a very beautiful woman, Ellie.
00:05:04I stand.
00:05:05A very, very beautiful woman.
00:05:07The trouble is I never see you.
00:05:08I'm home at night, you want to know if I've seen the hole in the carpet or whether I'll fix the leaky faucet or something.
00:05:13Oh, I'm sorry.
00:05:14Oh, I don't mean that it's your fault, no.
00:05:16I think we ought to forget about it, though.
00:05:17We ought to forget the house, forget the whole thing.
00:05:19Go away and take a trip.
00:05:20No reason why we can't.
00:05:22We're as free as the air.
00:05:23Kind of like when we were first married.
00:05:26Before Kay came along.
00:05:28Only this time we're not broke.
00:05:30We could even go to Europe.
00:05:32I think we'd better wait and hear what Kay has to say.
00:05:34Hallelujah.
00:05:35What about hallelujah?
00:05:36That's the place.
00:05:37How about it, Ellie?
00:05:38We'll see.
00:05:39Oh, you.
00:05:40Waikiki Beach.
00:05:41Moonlight on Waikiki.
00:05:43Flowers, ukulele, romance.
00:05:46A bling.
00:05:48A bling.
00:05:49Bling.
00:05:50Bling.
00:05:51Bling.
00:05:52Well, I'm going to call up that travel agency in the morning.
00:05:54Find out about those freighters.
00:05:58Hi, dear.
00:05:59Hello, darling.
00:06:00There she was, my Kay.
00:06:01The darling of my heart.
00:06:03I couldn't yet believe she was a married woman.
00:06:06She still seemed like a kid to me, playing at keeping house.
00:06:09How are you?
00:06:10You feeling all right?
00:06:11Feeling all right?
00:06:12Look at her.
00:06:13How does she look?
00:06:14Never looked better than her look.
00:06:15Oh, thank you, Father.
00:06:16Uh-huh.
00:06:17How's he treating you?
00:06:19Oh, fine.
00:06:20You missing?
00:06:21Mm.
00:06:22Don't talk.
00:06:23Hello!
00:06:24Hello!
00:06:25I was full of the milk of human kindness that night.
00:06:27I even looked at my son-in-law with a friendly eye.
00:06:30I don't say that he was my ideal, but I was getting used to him.
00:06:33Father Banks, how are you?
00:06:34Nice to see you.
00:06:35How have you been?
00:06:36Come on in.
00:06:37Don't you stand out here.
00:06:38Say, uh, do you think we could kind of do away with that Father Banks stuff?
00:06:42Just call me Stanley.
00:06:43Okay, Stan.
00:06:44What?
00:06:45Not Stan.
00:06:46Stanley.
00:06:47Stanley.
00:06:48Yeah.
00:06:49Okay, Stanley.
00:06:50How about a little golf on Sunday?
00:06:51Oh, you're on.
00:06:52Doris, it's wonderful to see you again.
00:06:54Well, my boy, how are you?
00:06:56Oh, so-so.
00:06:57So-so.
00:06:58Why, you look wonderful.
00:06:59Doris, how are you?
00:07:00How are you?
00:07:01What's wrong with the old man?
00:07:02It's the spring.
00:07:03It always takes it out of him.
00:07:04Takes it out.
00:07:05Puts it into me, doesn't it, darling?
00:07:06Well, I suppose you got the same message we did and very important news.
00:07:09Yes, yes.
00:07:10That's right.
00:07:11Why, Mrs. Kay, I can't wait to hear.
00:07:12You have your cocktail.
00:07:13Oh, darling, you can't do this to us.
00:07:15Buckley, you tell us.
00:07:16We're all here now.
00:07:17Thank you, Buckley.
00:07:18Well, I hope it is.
00:07:19I know what it is.
00:07:20Great news, eh, Buckley?
00:07:21Well, I think it is.
00:07:23Oh, Buckley, did you tell them and not tell us?
00:07:26No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:07:27I guessed it.
00:07:28You really put it over it, didn't you, boy?
00:07:29Oh, Buckley, he's not right.
00:07:30It's not that horrid contract.
00:07:31A contract?
00:07:32Is that what it is?
00:07:33Thousands of thousands.
00:07:34Oh, and we hoped it was a baby.
00:07:36Oh, I prayed for a baby and now to hit this.
00:07:39But, Buck, that's what it is.
00:07:40It is a baby.
00:07:41A baby.
00:07:42What?
00:07:43A baby?
00:07:44Oh, Buckley, that's wonderful.
00:07:46Oh, congratulations.
00:07:48I'd never seen such excitement.
00:07:50Kay was passed around like a loving cup.
00:07:52Oh, I can't tell you how delighted I am.
00:07:54That's the movie, boy.
00:07:56Buckley stood by, trying to look modest.
00:07:58He only succeeded in looking slightly half-witted.
00:08:01I grinned and tried to join in, but somehow there was a fly in the ointment.
00:08:08I couldn't put my finger on it, but there was definitely a fly.
00:08:12Yes, sir.
00:08:13That's the greatest news I've had in years.
00:08:16How about that, Grandpa?
00:08:18Grandpa.
00:08:22That was the fly.
00:08:24First he steals my daughter, now he makes a grandpa out of me.
00:08:31I do wish she'd go to Dr. Barnes. After all, he's taken care of her all her life.
00:08:37I suppose this man is all right, though.
00:08:40Good gracious, November, that doesn't give me much time and I have a million things to do.
00:08:45Ben! Tommy!
00:08:47What do you want them for?
00:08:48I want to tell them.
00:08:49Ben! Tommy! Wake up!
00:08:51Tommy! Ben!
00:08:52Boys! Do you hear me?
00:08:54Something wrong?
00:08:55What is it?
00:08:56What's the matter?
00:08:57The most exciting news.
00:08:59Kay's having a baby.
00:09:02Right now?
00:09:03No, silly. November.
00:09:04Poor Buckley.
00:09:05Poor Buckley? What do you mean, poor Buckley?
00:09:06You wouldn't say that if you'd been there tonight.
00:09:07He was just bursting with pride.
00:09:09We were standing there telling him how delighted he'd be, and he just stood there looking so cute and shy.
00:09:13Wasn't he cute, Stanley?
00:09:15Cutest thing you ever saw.
00:09:16Oh, all right, all right.
00:09:17You're all like you men.
00:09:18Good night, Tommy.
00:09:19Sorry I woke you up.
00:09:20Now, night, Ben.
00:09:21Get back to your books.
00:09:22Good night, Ben.
00:09:23Good night, Tommy.
00:09:24Uh...
00:09:26No need of broadcasting, then, Cheryl.
00:09:36Mrs. Dixon, please.
00:09:37Ellie, what are you doing calling people up at this time of the night?
00:09:40Will you please ask her to call Mrs. Banks the minute she comes in?
00:09:42I have some very important news to tell you.
00:09:44Ruth Dixon would not forgive me if I didn't tell her right away.
00:09:47You know, I think I'll give Kay a baby shower.
00:09:49We could have it on a Saturday, and you could ask the men to come in after.
00:09:51Ellie, do we really have to blaze in this thing from the housetops?
00:09:54Huh?
00:09:55You know, after all, it really isn't our affair.
00:09:57Stanley, what's the matter with you?
00:09:59I swear you act as though you almost didn't like the idea.
00:10:01I don't.
00:10:02Why, Stanley?
00:10:03For heaven's sake, why?
00:10:04I'll tell you why.
00:10:05Exactly why.
00:10:06In the first place, they haven't got room enough for a baby.
00:10:08The little apartment they live in isn't big enough for the two of them, much less a baby.
00:10:11But they can only...
00:10:12Second place, they can't afford a baby. Babies cost money.
00:10:15The older they get, the more they cost.
00:10:17What do they think they're going to use for money?
00:10:18You heard him at night, didn't you?
00:10:19When I asked him if he had the contract, he said no.
00:10:21But did that faze him?
00:10:22Oh, no, no.
00:10:23He just stood there looking cute.
00:10:25Cute.
00:10:26And he's the one who's going to be the father.
00:10:28Well, I'll tell you something.
00:10:29If he's got any idea that I'm going to pay for it, he's got another thing coming.
00:10:32I just got through paying for the wedding.
00:10:34But Stanley...
00:10:35And another thing, I think they ought to wait.
00:10:36Wait?
00:10:37For what?
00:10:38For seven or eight years, that's what.
00:10:39What do they know about children?
00:10:40Why, Kay's just a child herself.
00:10:42Here she gets out of college, marries the first guy she comes in contact with.
00:10:45Now she's saddled with a baby.
00:10:46Stanley Banks, you listen to me.
00:10:48I left school to marry you.
00:10:50Do you remember that?
00:10:51And do you remember when we were married?
00:10:52Of course you don't.
00:10:53We were married on the 4th of September.
00:10:55What's that got to do with...
00:10:56And do you remember when Kay was born?
00:10:58The 21st of June.
00:11:00Exactly.
00:11:01While my class was up there on the platform graduating, I was home having a baby.
00:11:05Well, I don't...
00:11:07Oh, Stanley, I know they haven't money and the apartment is small, but those things don't really matter, do they?
00:11:17The important thing is that we're going to have a grandchild.
00:11:21Darling, it's like getting a dividend.
00:11:25It's like getting a dividend?
00:11:27Yeah, something comes to you and you don't even lift a finger.
00:11:30You have none of the responsibilities of a baby.
00:11:33None of the hardships.
00:11:35All you have to do is love it.
00:11:40Hello?
00:11:41Ruth?
00:11:42I have the most marvelous news for you.
00:11:44I'm going to be a grandmother.
00:11:46It's like getting a dividend.
00:11:48Isn't that divine?
00:11:49Oh, we're so excited.
00:11:50Yes, Kay told us about it tonight.
00:11:52Right.
00:11:55Ellie didn't seem to mind the idea.
00:11:57Maybe women were different, but when I thought a grandfather.
00:12:01Well, I was the guy who was going places.
00:12:04The whole world of adventure was waiting, just waiting for me to give it the nod.
00:12:08And now a grandfather.
00:12:10I thought of the other grandfathers I knew.
00:12:13Why, they were old, old men.
00:12:15A toothless old codger down the street.
00:12:18That client of ours, his only fun was cutting people out of his will.
00:12:23Those ancient dodos at the club.
00:12:25He'd have to use a stethoscope to be sure they were still living.
00:12:29I didn't belong with them.
00:12:32I wasn't ready for the mothball jet.
00:12:34Why, I hadn't even begun to live.
00:12:38The only trouble with me was I was a little out of condition.
00:12:41I spent the next afternoon in the gym.
00:12:44Thanks.
00:12:59That evening I felt like a million.
00:13:20But the next morning I felt closer to a hundred.
00:13:25Stanley, Buckley's here for your golf match.
00:13:40What's the matter?
00:13:41What have you done?
00:13:42Oh, nothing.
00:13:43Here, here, here.
00:13:44Help me help you.
00:13:45Oh, no, no.
00:13:46Where's the pain?
00:13:47It's all over.
00:13:48Oh, whatever did you do?
00:13:49What happened?
00:13:50I'll call Dr. Bones and get him over here right away.
00:13:52No, I don't want any doctor.
00:13:53Stanley, for all we know, it might be your appendix.
00:13:55Yes, how could he?
00:13:56I haven't got an appendix and you know it.
00:13:58Well, I'll get Buckley.
00:13:59Buckley?
00:14:00If I don't want a doctor, I certainly don't want Buckley.
00:14:03Well, I thought he might be able to help.
00:14:05Help?
00:14:06Don't you think he's done enough?
00:14:08All I want is a hot bath with some Epsom salts.
00:14:11All right, I'll tell Buckley and be right there.
00:14:12Oh, oh, oh, Buckley.
00:14:14Buckley.
00:14:15Oh, oh, oh.
00:14:16Oh.
00:14:20The next week, Ellie gave what she called a stork shower.
00:14:23This is one form of highway robbery, not punishable by law.
00:14:33Hey!
00:14:34Hey, here's one here.
00:14:35You have an office.
00:14:36Mr. Royal, I'll be sure to keep all the cars.
00:14:38Yes, you may.
00:14:39Oh, Stanley.
00:14:40Stanley, how wonderful that you're out home in town.
00:14:43You should see the things they gave Kay.
00:14:45Everyone was so sweet, they all brought her something.
00:14:48What else could they do, honey?
00:14:50Oh, Stanley, you make it sound so sordid.
00:14:52Go on in. Kay's...
00:14:53Oh, no, no, no.
00:14:54There's no place for a man.
00:14:55Hi, Pops.
00:14:56Where are you going?
00:14:57Don't you want to come in and see my plunder?
00:14:59Well, I'll see it later.
00:15:00Oh, come on.
00:15:01Stanley, when you're finished, I'll have something very important
00:15:03I want to talk over with you.
00:15:04I'll be in the kitchen.
00:15:05All right.
00:15:06There's a...
00:15:07So many...
00:15:08Oh!
00:15:09Oh!
00:15:10Oh!
00:15:11Oh!
00:15:12Oh!
00:15:13Oh!
00:15:14Oh!
00:15:15Oh!
00:15:16Oh!
00:15:17Oh!
00:15:18Oh!
00:15:19Oh!
00:15:20Oh!
00:15:21Oh!
00:15:22Oh!
00:15:23Oh!
00:15:24Oh!
00:15:25Oh!
00:15:26Oh!
00:15:27Oh!
00:15:28Buckley looked like a man going down for the third and last time.
00:15:31But I decided to let him stew in his own juice.
00:15:34Oh!
00:15:35Oh!
00:15:36Oh!
00:15:41Well, what do you want, Ma?
00:15:43Oh, I, uh...
00:15:44I, uh, wanted to talk to you before the Dunstons got here.
00:15:48What?
00:15:49You know how worried I've been about how we're gonna rattle around in this house
00:15:53after Ben leaves for school in the fall?
00:15:56Mm-hmm.
00:15:57Well, I had a wonderful idea today.
00:15:59Oh?
00:16:00Ah.
00:16:01I say we ask Kay and Buckley to move in with us.
00:16:04Ellie, are you crazy?
00:16:06But Stanley, it'd be so simple.
00:16:08We could make a sitting room for them out of Kay's old bedroom
00:16:12and knock through a door to Ben's room, and that could be their bedroom.
00:16:16Then if we put Tommy in the spare room,
00:16:19we could put connecting doors from the bathroom,
00:16:22and that would be the nursery right next to our room.
00:16:25We could even knock through a door to our room, so if the baby cried...
00:16:28Yes, that'd be great. No, Ellie, no.
00:16:31Stanley, it won't cost much. I had the contractor over here today.
00:16:35It's a perfect place for the baby, and the wonderful thing would be that...
00:16:39if they wanted to go out some evening or even go away for a week or two,
00:16:42they wouldn't have to worry. We'd be right here to take care of her.
00:16:45Now, look, Ellie, I know how anxious you've been to get your hooks into that baby,
00:16:50but the answer is no. I've been all through that, you know,
00:16:53the two o'clock feedings and the colic and the measles and all the rest of it,
00:16:56and I'm not going through it again, especially with somebody else's baby.
00:16:59But it wouldn't be like that, Stanley. It would be fun to have a baby.
00:17:02Yeah, you can go over and see the baby at their apartment when they get it all washed and iron.
00:17:06But it's not coming here, and that's final.
00:17:08Well, you know that apartment isn't big enough.
00:17:10All right, tell them to buy a house.
00:17:11Well, they can't afford a house.
00:17:12Well, they should have thought of that before.
00:17:14I don't understand how you can be so hard on a poor, innocent little baby.
00:17:20Come on. The Dunsons are here. Would you please come out and talk to them?
00:17:25I'm going to take a body of the girls.
00:17:27Of course.
00:17:31Come on, stand.
00:17:33Well, let's go.
00:17:34Well, let's go.
00:17:35Let's go.
00:17:36Yes.
00:17:37You're going to be seated.
00:17:38You're going to be seated.
00:17:39Well, let's go.
00:17:40Oh, I'm going to be seated.
00:17:41Well, let's go.
00:17:42Well, let's go.
00:17:43Hello, Dorothy.
00:17:44Hello, Dorothy.
00:17:45Hello, Dorothy.
00:17:46Hello, Dorothy.
00:17:47And how's Grandpa Banks?
00:17:48Oh, what's the matter?
00:17:49Well, I'm a little stiff.
00:17:50I'm making some exercise, will you?
00:17:51You're crazy.
00:17:52Look at me.
00:17:53Fit as a fiddle.
00:17:54As I get, he's in burying the men that take it.
00:17:57Really, this baby's the best thing that ever happened to Herbert.
00:18:00It's giving him a new lease on life.
00:18:02Sit down, I'll have the bargain.
00:18:03Oh, no, no, no, no, not now.
00:18:05You sit down, Ellie, you sit down.
00:18:08Oh, I beg your pardon, dear, because I've got something I want to show you.
00:18:11Kay Buckley, come here.
00:18:13I want you to see your present.
00:18:14Here, take this out of the way, will you, Stan?
00:18:16Now, we're going to need a lot of room.
00:18:18Here you are, old boy.
00:18:19What is it?
00:18:20It's a blueprint.
00:18:22Here, hand me that chair.
00:18:23A blueprint for the future, a blueprint for happiness.
00:18:28There, now, Stan.
00:18:29Just hold that side down, will you?
00:18:30And you hold the other side, Ellie.
00:18:32Well...
00:18:32There, now, you two kids.
00:18:34Take a look at that.
00:18:35What is it?
00:18:36It's your new home.
00:18:37Home?
00:18:38What do you mean?
00:18:39Well, I'll tell you.
00:18:40I was looking over our house just the other day, and it came to me like an inspiration.
00:18:44That whole West Wing, it was the perfect place for you kids.
00:18:48So, I called up my architect, and I had him come right out.
00:18:51Here, let me show you.
00:18:52Your own study, your own living room, dining alcove, kitchen, and laundry.
00:18:58And over here, baby's room, nurse's room, and master bedroom.
00:19:03And it's all plenty commodious.
00:19:05Yeah.
00:19:05Ellie was fit to be tied.
00:19:07She saw that baby slipping out of her hands.
00:19:08And that means that your living room is 26 by 22.
00:19:11Is that big enough?
00:19:12And best of all, you'll have two babysitters ready-made.
00:19:16Oh, that's right.
00:19:18Well, kids, how about it?
00:19:20Well, it's wonderful, isn't it, Bartley?
00:19:22Yeah, yeah.
00:19:23Gee, Dad, it's swell of you.
00:19:24How did that seem?
00:19:25Now, you understand, of course, that there's nothing final about these particular plans.
00:19:29I just thought I'd give you a general idea of what it might look like.
00:19:32Now, if you'd like to have your entrance here, well, that can be managed.
00:19:35I'll call up the office.
00:19:36Thank you, sir.
00:19:37It's all your fault.
00:19:38It never would have happened if you'd let me ask them here.
00:19:41Ellie, I don't get it.
00:19:43You're more excited about this baby than you were about any of ours.
00:19:45Oh, well, you don't understand.
00:19:47This is the time that Kay needs me the most.
00:19:49I was going to take so much off her shoulders.
00:19:51I was going to help her with the shopping and help fix the baby clothes and fix the logistics.
00:19:56All right, all right, Ellie.
00:19:58If it means so much, have it here.
00:19:59I don't care.
00:20:00It's too late.
00:20:01Now they're going to the Dunstons.
00:20:02We'll never see them.
00:20:03Oh, Ellie, don't be silly now.
00:20:06You heard what Doris Dunstons said.
00:20:09This baby was the best thing in the world that ever happened to her, but to her, but...
00:20:14They're going to take over that baby body and soul.
00:20:17Ellie, this is ridiculous.
00:20:19You're acting like a...
00:20:26Oh, it was so sweet of you, so wonderful, and we'll never be able to thank you enough, but...
00:20:32It's really better this way.
00:20:34We'd only have gotten in your way.
00:20:36I'm sorry you went to all this trouble and expense, Dad.
00:20:39We should have told you sooner.
00:20:41Have you already bought it?
00:20:42Well, practically, we made a deposit on Sunday.
00:20:45I see.
00:20:46What's this, Kay?
00:20:47You got a house?
00:20:48I didn't realize that you were in a position to buy.
00:20:51Well, yeah, we got a mortgage from the bank.
00:20:54A mortgage?
00:20:56What's wrong with a mortgage?
00:20:57I had a mortgage myself a few years ago.
00:20:59Tell me all about the house, Kay.
00:21:00Where is it?
00:21:01It's in the new development, and it's just darling, isn't it?
00:21:03Yes.
00:21:04It's just big enough for me to take care of easily, and there's a nice backyard for the baby, and...
00:21:08and Bob and Fliss are going to buy out there.
00:21:10Is it furnished?
00:21:11Well, uh, no, it isn't, but we thought we could buy some unpainted furniture.
00:21:14Oh, you can't lift a finger. You don't have to do a thing.
00:21:17I'll do the whole business. What's it, Motherfork?
00:21:19Well, before I'd like to know, you can tell me that...
00:21:20Ellie was off again.
00:21:27For the next few weeks, I'd stop at the new house to pick up Ellie.
00:21:29She was working time and overtime.
00:21:42Hi, Kitten!
00:21:43Well, how are you?
00:21:47Wonderful.
00:21:48Come on in and see me.
00:21:50You look fine.
00:21:54Oh, no, you don't. You want to stay out here.
00:21:57I'm all right now.
00:21:58What's the matter?
00:21:59Oh, it was just the smell of the pain.
00:22:00Well, it still smells.
00:22:01Stanley, make her stay out here until Budbee comes together.
00:22:03You ought to be here any minute.
00:22:05Let's sit in the shade.
00:22:06I feel so guilty. Mom's doing so much.
00:22:09Oh, nonsense. You know, that's the breath of life, girl.
00:22:12Where do we sit?
00:22:12How about over here?
00:22:14There.
00:22:16How do you like the house, Pop?
00:22:18Oh, I think it's just right.
00:22:19The horses just loved it.
00:22:20They said they never would have moved if it hadn't gotten too small, would it?
00:22:23Hmm.
00:22:24Oh, that must be a little Bobby Hart.
00:22:26I'll send it to him.
00:22:29Pops, how did you feel when you had your first baby?
00:22:34Did it make any difference between you and Mom's?
00:22:37I mean, how did you feel?
00:22:39Well, I felt fine.
00:22:41I mean, really?
00:22:41I mean, really.
00:22:43Well, I fell all right.
00:22:45Well, I guess my nose was a little out of joint at first.
00:22:48I'd been high man with your mother for over a year, and then suddenly you came along and took the spotlight.
00:22:52You must have hated me.
00:22:53Oh, no. I don't think it was that bad.
00:22:55I think the worst time was the first night we took you home, you know?
00:23:00Yeah, I remember we got you home, gave you six o'clock feeding, got you bedded down.
00:23:06Then we must have gone into your room a dozen times the next hour to see how you were.
00:23:08Of course, if you were quiet, we went in to see if you were dead, and if you cried, we went in to see what was wrong with you.
00:23:14I remember lying awake that night thinking to myself, now what have we got into?
00:23:18Here we were, two perfectly happy people, free as the air.
00:23:22Now we're trapped.
00:23:24Trapped by 20 inches of screaming humanity.
00:23:27Do all fathers feel that way?
00:23:28Only know about myself.
00:23:31I remember that morning you woke with the dawn, screaming your head off.
00:23:37And your mother went in to heat your formula, and I went in to see what I could do about quieting you.
00:23:42And I stuck a finger at you, and you grabbed it.
00:23:46Grabbed it with such a grip.
00:23:49From that moment on, you had me hooked.
00:23:52Oh, I hope Buckley gets over it that quickly.
00:23:55You have to butt him up a little, you know?
00:23:56Make him think he's still part of the family.
00:24:00Oh, there he is.
00:24:02Hello, honey.
00:24:04How are you, darling?
00:24:06Hello.
00:24:07Oh, hello there. How are you?
00:24:09Fine, thank you.
00:24:10Well, what new wonders to be accomplished today?
00:24:12You can see it tomorrow. Take her along now. You'll be late for the park.
00:24:14Come on, Buckley can help.
00:24:15Sure.
00:24:16Well, there's nothing left to do. Your father and I will lock up. Have fun.
00:24:18Well, okay, bye.
00:24:19Bye-bye.
00:24:20Goodbye, family.
00:24:21Where are you going?
00:24:22Stand.
00:24:23Come here, I want to show you.
00:24:24How do you like this green? Isn't it a perfectly wonderful shade?
00:24:27We're going to use it in here.
00:24:28Why?
00:24:29And in the hall and every place. We'll make the house look much longer.
00:24:31And the same thing with the curb.
00:24:32I got the most wonderful bargain today, a mill in. Look at that.
00:24:36Put it up through all the windows and this is for the bedroom.
00:24:39Just waiting to see the price.
00:24:40You ought to be very proud of me. I'm staying right within their budget.
00:24:42I'm having a marvelous time.
00:24:45There's only one thing wrong.
00:24:48I haven't done a thing about the nursery. I could cry about it.
00:24:51What's the matter?
00:24:52Herbert's doing it.
00:24:53Nonston?
00:24:54He was so upset about their not moving in with him.
00:24:56He said the least they could do would be to let them furnish the nursery.
00:24:59He's going to give them a crib and a bassinet and a screen and a chest of drawers.
00:25:02It'll probably all be done in 14-carat gold.
00:25:07What are we going to give the baby?
00:25:09Stan.
00:25:10What are you so surprised about?
00:25:12Didn't you think I was going to give the baby a present?
00:25:14Well, as a matter of fact, there was something I was looking at today that would make a wonderful present.
00:25:17You put it right in this window and it keeps the air clean and the right temperature.
00:25:20Oh, really?
00:25:21It's very pretty and modern looking. It's quite expensive.
00:25:23What's the name of it?
00:25:24I don't know the name of it.
00:25:25But it will only extend this far into the room.
00:25:27Where did you see it?
00:25:28Downtown.
00:25:30You see, you regulate it from here.
00:25:32It controls the air and the temperature at all times. See?
00:25:35No dust, no soot, no pollen.
00:25:38Wonderful.
00:25:39Ellie's idea.
00:25:40I wish we'd had one for Tommy.
00:25:41Probably wouldn't have those ad noises.
00:25:42That is wonderful.
00:25:43And look, over here.
00:25:44I want to show you this.
00:25:46You see?
00:25:47You turn it on and leave it here beside his crib.
00:25:50And then you can go out and close the door.
00:25:52And if he cries or even if there's any change in his breathing, you can hear it from anywhere in the house.
00:25:57No.
00:25:58Well, they're certainly going to love that.
00:25:59And here's his combination bath and dressing table.
00:26:02Right?
00:26:03Just the right size.
00:26:04What is that?
00:26:05What is that?
00:26:06Oh, that's mine.
00:26:07I thought he might as well get used to it.
00:26:08He'll be going there someday.
00:26:09Oh, he will?
00:26:10Yes.
00:26:11As a matter of fact, I've already registered him in the class of 1973.
00:26:13Hmm.
00:26:14I'm a Dartmouth man myself.
00:26:15Oh, that's a good college, too.
00:26:17Now, this bath stand, I want you to notice the height of it.
00:26:19A good college.
00:26:21A good college.
00:26:25Well, we beat you in football in 1947, 1948, and 1949, and we shall probably, and we have defeated you five years running in hockey, and our bobsled team is probably the finest that has ever been developed in the history of the world.
00:26:40Well, he's made some fresh coffee.
00:26:41A good coffee.
00:26:42A good coffee.
00:26:43That's one of the funniest remarks you've ever made.
00:26:45Now, now, wait a minute.
00:26:46Oh, no, no.
00:26:47Now, listen.
00:26:48Here, Sam.
00:26:49Oh, yes.
00:26:50Well, what do you think of our little nursery?
00:26:53Isn't it lovely?
00:26:54Fine, fine.
00:26:55The wonderful thing is, most of it can grow up with him.
00:26:58The shelves, for instance.
00:26:59It'll hold his toys now, but later he can use it for his tennis racket.
00:27:03And then when he's older.
00:27:04Well, he was right.
00:27:05They had taken over the baby, lock, stock, and barrel.
00:27:08And things.
00:27:11Oh, thank you, dear.
00:27:12Isn't that a beautiful racket, Pops?
00:27:14Mm-hmm.
00:27:15Mother Durston gave it to me.
00:27:16She gave me the whole album.
00:27:17I remember that I used to listen to classical music while I was waiting for Buckley.
00:27:22I think that's why he whistled so well.
00:27:24Have you ever heard him whistle?
00:27:26No.
00:27:27No, I haven't.
00:27:28Well, you should ask him sometime.
00:27:30Yes, I will.
00:27:32I certainly will.
00:27:33By the way, son, what are you gonna call this baby of yours?
00:27:35We've had some terrible arguments about him, haven't we, Buckley?
00:27:37Well, you've gone through all the telephone books, the dictionaries, the baby books.
00:27:41Finally, we found a couple of names we both liked.
00:27:43Yeah.
00:27:44Come on, sit down.
00:27:45Sit down.
00:27:46Uh, if it's a boy, we thought we might call him Andrew.
00:27:49Andrew?
00:27:50Who's Andrew?
00:27:51Well, there's Andrew Jackson and Andrew Nordell, my doctor.
00:27:54And besides, we like the name Andrew.
00:27:57And we both like the name Jonathan.
00:27:59Oh, no, not Jonathan.
00:28:00Better call him Blake Johnson.
00:28:01Well, uh, we also thought we might call him Michael.
00:28:04That's a good name.
00:28:05Yeah.
00:28:06Well, you can't call him Michael.
00:28:07I went to school with a Michael and he smelt.
00:28:09Well, now, Ellie, just because you're Michael smelt, you know, it doesn't mean that all Michaels have to smell.
00:28:15You know a name that I've loved ever since I first read little women.
00:28:20Lauren, Laurie.
00:28:21Remember how dear he was.
00:28:22How about Timothy?
00:28:23I think that has everything.
00:28:24Do you like the name of Timothy Kaye?
00:28:26Well, I...
00:28:27Now, Ellie, they've already told you.
00:28:29They've been all through this.
00:28:30Why do we suggest any more names?
00:28:33Besides, the names they have are wonderful.
00:28:35Jonathan, Michael, Andrew, they're all wonderful names.
00:28:38But you have to think of two names that go together.
00:28:41Andrew, Dunstan.
00:28:43That doesn't sound very good.
00:28:45Stanley, they haven't made up their minds.
00:28:47They need our help.
00:28:48If I may interrupt, I think you're going about this all wrong.
00:28:51My idea would be to use a family name.
00:28:54Well, that's right.
00:28:55The first grandson is always supposed to have the name of the paternal grandfather, isn't he?
00:29:00No, no, no.
00:29:01Now, Doris, that's not what I meant.
00:29:02I was thinking of my great-grandfather, Malcolm.
00:29:05Or, well, say, Uncle Wilford.
00:29:07Well, if we're talking about family names, what about Stanley?
00:29:10Stanley, Dunstan, that ought to satisfy everybody.
00:29:13Well, we did think about that.
00:29:15No, no, no.
00:29:17Now, one Stanley in the family is enough.
00:29:20You're right.
00:29:21Now, how about Cornelius?
00:29:22That's a family name.
00:29:23And then, let's see.
00:29:24There's Gregory and Dexter and David.
00:29:27Oh, I had some wonderful names in my family, too.
00:29:30Milo and Fennington.
00:29:32Fennington.
00:29:33Now, that's a nice...
00:29:34That'd be a nice name.
00:29:35Fennington.
00:29:36Well, we're all talking about boys' names.
00:29:39What if it's a girl?
00:29:40We've got to decide on a girl's name.
00:29:41Oh, it won't be a girl.
00:29:42Don't worry.
00:29:43The Dunstons always run to boys.
00:29:45I'm not worried.
00:29:46I wanted to be a girl.
00:29:47I like girls.
00:29:48Where are you going, darling?
00:29:49I...
00:29:50You thought I'd wash the dishes?
00:29:51Oh, nothing of the sort.
00:29:52I'll do so.
00:29:53Mother, please, let me go.
00:29:54You do too much care.
00:29:56You must rest more.
00:29:57No, I don't agree with you.
00:29:58I think some work is good for her.
00:29:59I think she should have a maid.
00:30:00I'd be perfectly willing to...
00:30:01Of course I don't mean she should work if she's tired.
00:30:03Is this young doctor a person?
00:30:05I've always said she should have gone to our family doctor.
00:30:08We wanted her to go to our doctor, too.
00:30:09There's nothing the matter with my doctor.
00:30:11He's fine.
00:30:12He's wonderful.
00:30:13He told me not to pay any attention to.
00:30:15Nobody seems to realize this is my baby.
00:30:18Mine and Buckley's.
00:30:19You seem to think...
00:30:20Well, the way you talk...
00:30:22Well, I'll have you know this.
00:30:23I'm gonna have my baby the way I want to.
00:30:25Where else I...
00:30:42Well, now that we've succeeded in reducing her to hysterics...
00:30:44What do you say we'd get out of here and go home?
00:30:46Oh, she's just high strong.
00:30:47Where are your things?
00:30:48I'll get them.
00:30:49Come here.
00:30:55Come here.
00:31:00Oh, thanks.
00:31:01Pops?
00:31:02We're gonna run along, kitten.
00:31:04Please come in, Pops.
00:31:06Go ahead.
00:31:07I'll take the things.
00:31:12Pops, I was horrible.
00:31:13I was terrible.
00:31:15They'll never forgive me.
00:31:16No, no, no.
00:31:17We deserve much worse than that.
00:31:20It wasn't you.
00:31:21You never interfered, but the others.
00:31:24Mother and Father Dunstan and...
00:31:26And Moms.
00:31:28I'm doing too much.
00:31:29I'm doing too little.
00:31:30She wants a girl.
00:31:31They want a boy.
00:31:32No matter what the baby is, somebody's gonna be disappointed.
00:31:35Yeah, I think what you'll have to do is have...
00:31:37You know, twins.
00:31:38One of each sex.
00:31:40Thank heavens for you, Pops.
00:31:42You're the only one with any sense.
00:31:44Oh, no, no.
00:31:45I'm just as bad as the rest of them.
00:31:46But I'll tell you this.
00:31:47There's gonna be no more of it.
00:31:48It'll never happen again.
00:31:49We'll never gang up on you again, believe me.
00:31:52Oh, thanks, Pops.
00:31:54You relax, kitten.
00:31:55Now, from now on, it's gonna be your way.
00:31:57And you won't let them make a fuss with Dr. Nordell, will you?
00:32:00What do you mean, dear?
00:32:02Well, the Dunstan said they were going down to have a talk with him.
00:32:05Oh, Pops, you won't let them do that, will you?
00:32:07Oh, of course I won't.
00:32:08What nonsense?
00:32:09You're a doctor.
00:32:10You have confidence in him, faith in him.
00:32:12No one has a right to destroy that confidence.
00:32:15Thanks, Pops.
00:32:16It isn't their fault, really.
00:32:18It's just that, well, I guess they just don't understand the new way of looking at things.
00:32:23Well, after all, as Dr. Nordell says, birth is a perfectly natural thing, a glorious thing, and want you to be conscious every minute so they don't miss a second of it.
00:32:34Please don't miss it.
00:32:35He believes that a woman should be aware of the wonderful thing that's happening to her.
00:32:39And another thing, he doesn't believe that a woman should be separated from her baby for one second after it's born.
00:32:45You should carry it with you, right back to your room and keep it there with you, sleeping right there with you in your hospital room.
00:32:54That is a little new, isn't it?
00:32:56Oh, Pops, that's not new.
00:32:58Primitive woman has always done it.
00:33:00Dr. Nordell was in the Pacific, and he said the women there, why, they were never separated from their babies.
00:33:06They kept them slung on their backs for the first two years of their lives.
00:33:09And he said it was wonderful for the babies.
00:33:12He said if he had his wife, all of his mothers would do that.
00:33:15You'd carry them on your back while you were doing your housework, and then when it got hungry, you'd swing it around and feed it and then swing it back again.
00:33:25He says he gives the baby a wonderful feeling of security.
00:33:28Uh, darling, you're, you're, you know, you're sure that this doctor...
00:33:34Oh, Pops, you're not gonna start that too.
00:33:36No, no, oh, no, no, no, no, no.
00:33:39Dr. Nordell is wonderful.
00:33:41He, he's marvelous. He, he's simply terribly wonderful.
00:33:45Oh, I'm, darling, I'm sure he is. I'm sure he is.
00:33:49Oh, thank you, Pops.
00:33:51I'm sure, now you, you just go to sleep and relax.
00:33:54Okay.
00:33:55Yeah.
00:33:56Good night, Pops.
00:33:57Good night.
00:34:13Dr. Nordell will be with you in a minute. Please be seated.
00:34:21I just don't like the idea.
00:34:23I thought we said last night, the Dunstons and all of us, that we weren't going to interfere any more in their affairs.
00:34:28I'm not going to have my daughter walking around for two years with a papoose on her back.
00:34:32Darling, I tell you, that's figurative. He didn't mean that literally.
00:34:34Well, just want to be sure.
00:34:36Good morning. Good morning. Good morning.
00:34:38I'm so glad you came.
00:34:40Now I've met the whole family. Mr. and Mrs. Dunstons Senior were in this morning.
00:34:52They were?
00:34:53They were a little anxious, thought Kay was doing too much.
00:34:55But I think I convinced them that she was all right.
00:34:57That's a wonderful daughter you have.
00:35:01Oh, excuse me.
00:35:02Won't you, Mrs. Banks?
00:35:08So, what can I do for you?
00:35:11Well, as a matter of fact, my wife has been a little worried too.
00:35:14And you know how mothers are at this time, only daughter and all that sort of thing.
00:35:18I thought the best thing to do would be to bring her down here and let her have a talk with you.
00:35:22I think that's very sensible.
00:35:24What particularly worries you, Mrs. Banks?
00:35:27Well, actually, I...
00:35:28Well, actually, it's the whole thing, isn't it?
00:35:31I mean, about it all being so natural and everything.
00:35:35I'm just trying to take away any fear she might have.
00:35:39You know, the fear of pain can really produce pain.
00:35:42But if she understands the whole process, if she has confidence in me,
00:35:48if she knows that I'm going to be right there with her to help her when she wants help,
00:35:52if she trusts me, that's half the battle, isn't it?
00:35:56Yes, it is.
00:35:57And then afterward, having the baby in the room with her.
00:36:01I'm trying to persuade my mothers to go back to caring for their babies themselves,
00:36:05feeding them themselves, bathing them, being close to them,
00:36:09instead of handing them over to some nurse.
00:36:11I know that this is a lot to ask of your daughter.
00:36:13It's a full-time job.
00:36:15But believe me, the rewards will be great.
00:36:18Not only for the baby, but for Kay.
00:36:21There you are, Allie, I told you. All of your worry for nothing.
00:36:25It's a... Thank you, Doctor.
00:36:27You were nice to give her so much of your time.
00:36:29It's to my advantage.
00:36:30If I have you with me, then believe me, everything's going to be that much easier.
00:36:33Well, you certainly have us with you.
00:36:35Well, thank you very much, Doctor.
00:36:37You can count on that.
00:36:39Come on now, Allie.
00:36:41Goodbye.
00:36:42For the next month or two, everything was peaceful.
00:36:45Too peaceful.
00:36:46I should have known it was the calm before a storm.
00:36:54Allie.
00:36:55That's the telephone, Allie.
00:36:57Hello.
00:36:58Hello.
00:36:59Hello.
00:37:00Buckley.
00:37:01What?
00:37:02Buckley.
00:37:03You know what time it is?
00:37:04It's a quarter of three.
00:37:05I'm sorry.
00:37:06I didn't realize.
00:37:07Is Kay there?
00:37:08Kay?
00:37:09Why, of course she isn't here.
00:37:10What would she...
00:37:11Hello.
00:37:12Hello.
00:37:13Buckley.
00:37:14I'll take this downstairs.
00:37:15Hang on.
00:37:16I'll take this downstairs.
00:37:17Hang on.
00:37:18Hey.
00:37:19I'm sorry.
00:37:20I'm sorry.
00:37:21I didn't realize.
00:37:22I'm sorry.
00:37:23I didn't realize.
00:37:24Is Kay there?
00:37:25Kay?
00:37:26Why, of course she isn't here.
00:37:27What would she...
00:37:28Hello.
00:37:29Hello.
00:37:30Buckley.
00:37:31I'll take this downstairs.
00:37:32Hang on.
00:37:33Hey.
00:37:34Hey.
00:37:35Hey.
00:37:36Hey.
00:37:37Hey.
00:37:38Hey.
00:37:39Hey.
00:37:40Hey.
00:37:41Hey.
00:37:42Hey.
00:37:43Hey.
00:37:44Hey.
00:37:45Hey.
00:37:52Okay, let's see.
00:37:53Hello.
00:37:54Now, what do you mean is she here?
00:37:56I thought if she were there, I could come and pick her up if she were there.
00:38:00Well, when did she leave? What time did she leave?
00:38:03Well, I don't know. I've been out for a few hours. I just got back a little while ago.
00:38:07Or was it? A fight?
00:38:10Did you have a fight?
00:38:13Well, we'd had an argument, yes.
00:38:16Look, if anything happens to her, I'll kill myself.
00:38:19Don't worry. I'll do it for you.
00:38:22Did you look around? Did she take anything with her? A bag or anything?
00:38:24She took her hatbox and her umbrella and her toilet case and her toothbrush and her...
00:38:29Oh, well, don't worry about it, then.
00:38:31If she took a toothbrush, she's not headed for the river.
00:38:34Did you call up anybody to try anybody else on the phone?
00:38:37Well, you might do that.
00:38:39All right, I'll be right over.
00:38:42Any word?
00:38:53No.
00:38:54Did you call her friends?
00:38:56Everyone I could think of.
00:38:57From the hotels.
00:38:59I can't wait any longer. I'm going to call the police.
00:39:01No, no, no, wait a minute. Don't do that yet.
00:39:03Maybe we can figure this thing out.
00:39:04Did she take the car?
00:39:06No.
00:39:07Is there a bus runs by at this hour?
00:39:09Anybody you could think of might have picked her up?
00:39:10I've covered the field.
00:39:11Well, then, there must be a cab. What's the number?
00:39:13Fairview 6...
00:39:15Fairview 61098.
00:39:17But there's no use asking them.
00:39:18They told me they don't give out that information except to the police.
00:39:21Fairview 61098.
00:39:22They said they had to make it a blanket rule.
00:39:24There are too many wives wanting to leave their husbands.
00:39:28Does she have much cash?
00:39:29I don't believe so.
00:39:30I give her money, but she keeps losing it.
00:39:34Is this the first time she's left you?
00:39:35What do you mean by that?
00:39:37Oh, come, come, come.
00:39:38My boy, I'm married too.
00:39:39Now, has she ever done anything like this before?
00:39:42No.
00:39:43She locked me out a few times, but that's all.
00:39:46Hello?
00:39:47Hello.
00:39:47The Green Cab Company?
00:39:49Now, I know this is against your rules,
00:39:50but I certainly would appreciate it if you could help me out.
00:39:54Did you get a call last night from 324 Adams Street?
00:39:57Look, I told you once, it's against rules.
00:40:00Well, you see, I'm not her husband.
00:40:03You see, I'm her father.
00:40:04And she's, well, she's expecting, you know.
00:40:11And you know how they are in that condition.
00:40:14Sometimes you'd think if you could find it in your heart to help me,
00:40:17I certainly would appreciate it.
00:40:20Well, there was a call.
00:40:25Where did you take her?
00:40:27Thanks.
00:40:28Thanks very, very much.
00:40:30We won't forget this.
00:40:31Where'd she go?
00:40:33Home.
00:40:33Home?
00:40:34Home?
00:40:35What do you mean, home?
00:40:36This is her home.
00:40:36Oh, I'm sorry.
00:40:37I'm sorry.
00:40:37I mean my home.
00:40:38Come on.
00:40:39I'll wait here.
00:40:41Do you want her to come back or don't you?
00:40:44Yes.
00:40:45Well, then you'll have to go and get her.
00:40:47That's the first law of marriage.
00:40:49You can't expect any self-respecting wife to come home under her own power.
00:40:57I don't suppose you want to tell me what the quarrel was about.
00:41:08If you don't mind, I'd rather not talk about it.
00:41:10Okay.
00:41:14I don't know whether you know it, but your daughter's got a terrible temper.
00:41:18I'm sorry.
00:41:19And this business tonight, Wyatt, it's like a child.
00:41:22And a spoiled child at that.
00:41:23She's got to grow up.
00:41:25She's got to be made to realize that she can't go running home to you every time there's something that she doesn't like.
00:41:29Well, what do you want me to do, pack up and move?
00:41:59What are you doing?
00:42:19Get out of your house.
00:42:21Get out of your house.
00:42:25Hi, Popes.
00:42:31Hi.
00:42:41Forgot your key, I suppose.
00:42:42Why didn't you ring?
00:42:44Oh, I...
00:42:45I didn't want to wake up you at Mom's.
00:42:51I'm all right.
00:42:52The doctor told me to sleep with plenty of fresh air.
00:42:55Well, you certainly had your share for tonight, I guess. Come on.
00:42:58First, I... I want you to know this, Popes.
00:43:02I've left Bumpley.
00:43:03I've left him for good.
00:43:06I wish you'd tell Mom's for me.
00:43:08Ask her not to fuss.
00:43:11It's no use.
00:43:13It's over for good and all.
00:43:17I'd rather not have to talk about it.
00:43:20All right, kitten. It'll be however you want it.
00:43:22You know nothing.
00:43:24Come on, I'll have your room ready for you and a jiggy.
00:43:28Oh, Popes.
00:43:29Why did it have to end like this?
00:43:32Everything was so wonderful at first.
00:43:34I felt fine.
00:43:36Everybody was so sweet to me.
00:43:39It takes too long, that's all.
00:43:42It drags off too long.
00:43:43I'm ugly now.
00:43:48I'm clumsy.
00:43:49Oh, darling. Darling, don't say that.
00:43:52Don't you know that you have a beauty now that you never had before?
00:43:56I know what I look like.
00:43:58I'm dull and stupid.
00:44:00I can't do any of the things I used to do.
00:44:06Now when I need him most, I've lost him.
00:44:09He doesn't love me anymore.
00:44:11Oh, kitten, you mustn't think things like that.
00:44:13He loves you more than ever.
00:44:14He's fighting with worry.
00:44:16Well, he just said to me,
00:44:17if anything happened to you, he'd kill himself.
00:44:21What do you mean?
00:44:23Did he call you?
00:44:24He's right out there now.
00:44:26I suppose he told you everything.
00:44:33He didn't tell me anything.
00:44:34He just said you had an argument.
00:44:37An argument?
00:44:39That's wonderful.
00:44:42Do you know what it really is?
00:44:45That someone else comes.
00:44:47He's found someone else.
00:44:49He goes off and leaves me every night
00:44:51and tells me he goes to the office.
00:44:54But it isn't true.
00:44:55I called the office
00:44:57and he isn't there.
00:45:01I'm up with someone else.
00:45:07Don't, don't.
00:45:09Please, don't.
00:45:12We'll talk about it tomorrow.
00:45:13You've got to get your rest.
00:45:16I'll send him away.
00:45:18I'll send him away.
00:45:25She's here.
00:45:26She's been asleep.
00:45:28I wouldn't try to talk to her
00:45:29if I were you in the mood she's in now.
00:45:32Did she say why we had a fight?
00:45:34Yes.
00:45:36Well, look, I'd like to say something.
00:45:38Just for the record.
00:45:40It's not true.
00:45:40Not a word of it.
00:45:42I've been working every night.
00:45:45After all,
00:45:45you're going to have a baby.
00:45:48You know,
00:45:49I want to give him.
00:45:52She said that she phoned me twice there.
00:45:54Nobody answered.
00:45:55Believe me,
00:45:56it must have been just a few minutes
00:45:57I stepped out for a cup of coffee.
00:45:59I've told her this again and again.
00:46:01She won't believe me.
00:46:02Well, you ought to have more sense
00:46:03than to argue with her at a time like this.
00:46:05You know she isn't herself.
00:46:07Well, I'm not myself either.
00:46:09Look, I even thought
00:46:13of having a man call Kay
00:46:14and tell her
00:46:15and I said to myself,
00:46:17if she doesn't believe me,
00:46:19if she doesn't believe me
00:46:20that I'm working like crazy
00:46:21night after night
00:46:22for her and the baby,
00:46:24she doesn't take my word for it,
00:46:25then it doesn't matter.
00:46:26It's finished anyway.
00:46:27It's off.
00:46:28It's finished.
00:46:28Now, wait a minute.
00:46:29Off.
00:46:29Wait a minute.
00:46:29We'll all talk about this in the morning.
00:46:31We'll have had some sleep.
00:46:33As far as I'm concerned,
00:46:34there's nothing more to say.
00:46:36I use your phone.
00:46:37I'd like to call a cab.
00:46:38I'll drive you home
00:46:39just as soon as I get Kay settled.
00:46:41Thanks, son.
00:46:42Better take a cab.
00:46:44Suit yourself.
00:46:50He's calling a cab.
00:46:54I suppose he denied everything.
00:46:57He told me his side of it.
00:46:59Well, you don't believe him, do you?
00:47:02Darling, I only know
00:47:03that he really loves you.
00:47:04Oh, that isn't true.
00:47:06He doesn't love me.
00:47:07He doesn't care whether
00:47:08I live or die.
00:47:10Oh, I never should have married him.
00:47:13A little late to think about that.
00:47:14Now, come on, now.
00:47:16You really must get your sleep, darling.
00:47:18Come on, come on, now.
00:47:19I'm going to get...
00:47:19Forgive me for interrupting.
00:47:21Your phone is out of order.
00:47:25Well, that's ridiculous.
00:47:26Now, Lord.
00:47:27You're not supposed to carry things.
00:47:53You know that.
00:47:54I'll take them up.
00:47:55We don't need your help.
00:47:56Do we, Father?
00:47:58No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:47:59Here, I'll take them off.
00:48:00You don't have a room for her down here.
00:48:02Some place she can fix up as a bedroom.
00:48:04There's a couch in the living room.
00:48:05She wants to try that.
00:48:05Find it a little hard.
00:48:06You know you're not supposed to walk up and down stairs.
00:48:09Another thing, she's supposed to drink
00:48:10eight glasses of water a day.
00:48:12She forgets.
00:48:13So if you could remind her.
00:48:14I'll try.
00:48:14And her exercise.
00:48:16Dr. Nordell wants her to walk two to three hours each day.
00:48:19Now in the morning and now in the afternoon.
00:48:21And we usually take a walk in the evening.
00:48:22And she's supposed to be in bed at 9.30.
00:48:24I'll try and remember.
00:48:25And the calcium pills.
00:48:26Did you bring your pills?
00:48:27No, I forgot.
00:48:28I'll go home and get them.
00:48:29Won't I do in the morning?
00:48:30I'll give them to your father when he takes me home.
00:48:32Down in your shoes.
00:48:33It really, but you don't...
00:48:34You know you can't do them yourself.
00:48:44Oh, Buckley.
00:48:51Buckley, what's happening to her?
00:48:54Haven't you heard?
00:48:57Breathing a baby.
00:49:14You know you can't do them.
00:49:44Stanley!
00:50:12Stanley!
00:50:13Stanley!
00:50:14Stanley, time to get up.
00:50:25Wake up, sleepyhead.
00:50:39As the days went on and nothing happened, the tension mounted.
00:50:45Luckily, watch Kay as if you were a time bomb.
00:50:49That's our book.
00:51:03What is it, Kay? What's the matter?
00:51:06Oh, I reneged.
00:51:09I had a heart in my hand all the time.
00:51:11I don't know what I must be thinking about.
00:51:16As November came and the great event drew nearer and nearer,
00:51:19we all waited with bated breath.
00:51:22Is that the phone?
00:51:25No, it is.
00:51:31Well, I guess it'll get a little air.
00:51:38Stanley.
00:51:39Hey.
00:51:41As long as you're going, would you give this to Kay?
00:51:44Kay? Who said anything about Kay?
00:51:48I never could fool Ellie.
00:51:51But I hoped I could fool Kay.
00:51:53Stanley.
00:51:54Hello, hello, hello.
00:52:03Hi.
00:52:05Hi.
00:52:06Is this a beautiful night?
00:52:07See those stars?
00:52:09Mom sent me over with this.
00:52:11Thanks.
00:52:13Go on. Go on. Open it up.
00:52:14Open it up. Don't mind us men.
00:52:16Let me take your coat.
00:52:19Oh, I can do it. I can do it.
00:52:20Well, at least let me help you.
00:52:22All right.
00:52:28I'm glad you came by tonight.
00:52:30She's awfully low.
00:52:32No, no, no. She's just nervous.
00:52:34I wish you'd talk to her.
00:52:36Oh, it's lovely.
00:52:38What is it?
00:52:39It's a beautiful bed jacket.
00:52:41Isn't that pretty?
00:52:43Oh, ho, ho.
00:52:45You certainly aren't going to knock their eyes out at the hospital.
00:52:49I'll go pack it right now.
00:52:52Kay, Kay, now that your father's here, you won't mind.
00:52:55I'd like to get some cigarettes.
00:52:56You don't have to run right along, do you?
00:52:57Oh, no. I can squeeze out a couple of minutes, I guess.
00:52:59I won't be long.
00:53:02Hold everything till I get back.
00:53:07You look wonderful, Kipper.
00:53:08Oh, I feel fine.
00:53:10It's just bubbly.
00:53:12I wish you'd talk to him.
00:53:13He's so jittery.
00:53:26What's he jittery about?
00:53:28Oh, he...
00:53:30He's afraid that...
00:53:32Oh, something will go wrong.
00:53:34Oh...
00:53:36Shouldn't feel like that.
00:53:39Of course, I...
00:53:40I can't tell him that, uh...
00:53:42That it's going to be easy for you.
00:53:43It may not be, but...
00:53:45But I do know this, that when the time comes, you...
00:53:49You mothers seem to have a courage and a strength you never knew you had.
00:53:54I hope so.
00:53:56I hope so.
00:53:58As far as anything going wrong,
00:54:00The doctors and the scientists have been working for hundreds of years now...
00:54:04So that you and your baby can be safe.
00:54:06Nothing's going to go wrong.
00:54:07You know that, don't you?
00:54:10I know.
00:54:13Oh, Pop.
00:54:15I wish it was over.
00:54:17It will be soon, Doc.
00:54:21But I'm sure that...
00:54:22That when you hold your baby in your arms, you'll think it was worth anything you went through.
00:54:27Are they silly?
00:54:30It's like the first day you took me to the dentist.
00:54:36Every night we put our clothes where we could grab them in a hurry.
00:54:40We were like members of a fire brigade, ready to jump at the first alarm.
00:54:45Would have happened almost any time now, huh?
00:54:48I suppose so. Sometime for the next two or three weeks.
00:54:52Two or three weeks? I couldn't live like this another two or three weeks.
00:54:57Hello?
00:55:01Sorry to wake you, but I just brought Kate to the hospital.
00:55:05Huh? No, I don't know anything yet. The doctor's with her now.
00:55:08We'll be right there.
00:55:18Stanley, you can't do that. You've got to really dress.
00:55:20There's no telling how long we'll be down there.
00:55:22Do you remember to put the razor in your pocket?
00:55:24The razor?
00:55:25Yes, your electric razor.
00:55:26Then it doesn't matter where you have to go to shave.
00:55:28And your clean shirt.
00:55:31Well, you can wait for me, please.
00:55:32And I guess we'd better wire Ben.
00:55:34You can phone them if you can.
00:55:37I must remember to tell the wireless.
00:55:39We're going to take breakfast in case the baby's fallen by then.
00:55:41Stanley, please, hurry!
00:55:42What kept you?
00:55:43Well, I'm just getting dressed. I have to get my clothes up.
00:55:47I'll drive.
00:55:48Oh, no, no, no. Come on.
00:55:49We don't hurry. The baby will be born before we get there. Come on.
00:55:50You can't drive.
00:55:51The baby will be born before we get there. Come on.
00:55:52The baby will be born when we'll never get there. If you...
00:55:53You can't drive.
00:55:54I'll drive.
00:55:55Oh, no, no, no. Come on.
00:55:56Why don't we hurry? The baby will be born before we get there. Come on.
00:55:57The baby will be born when we'll never get there. If you...
00:55:58You can't drive.
00:55:59Don't go so fast, Ellie. We're in a business district.
00:56:00I'll drive.
00:56:01I'll drive.
00:56:02Oh, no, no, no. Come on.
00:56:03What if we don't hurry? The baby will be born before we get there. Come on.
00:56:05You can't drive.
00:56:06The baby will be born before we get there. Come on.
00:56:07The baby will be born when we'll never get there. If you...
00:56:08Don't go so fast, Ellie. We're in a business district.
00:56:13Ellie, then, slow down a little bit.
00:56:34Ellie, for heaven's sake.
00:56:36I have the right of way.
00:56:38Keep your eye on the road.
00:56:40Your tie's on crooked. Fix it.
00:56:50Ellie, gasoline!
00:56:54Come on, now, Ellie. Pull over here. Let me drive. Come on.
00:56:56Stanley, be careful.
00:56:59No, no, no, Ellie. You can't make it. There's a train.
00:57:01Will you relax? You're making me nervous.
00:57:08You realize what you've done?
00:57:09You've broken every regulation in the book.
00:57:12You've passed everything on the wrong side.
00:57:14You've gone through red lights. You've exceeded the speed limit.
00:57:16I know, but this is an emergency.
00:57:18For the first time in my life, I long for the sight of a motorcycle cop.
00:57:22Park it, will you, Stanley?
00:57:31Park it, will you, Stanley?
00:57:32What's the matter? What happened?
00:57:33What?
00:57:34Nothing happened. It was a false alarm.
00:57:39I'm sorry we brought you all this way.
00:57:40Oh, no.
00:57:41It's all right. Nothing at all. Nothing at all.
00:57:42Good night, darling. Good night.
00:57:43Good night. Good night.
00:57:44Good night. Good night.
00:57:45Good night. Good night.
00:57:46I'm sorry.
00:57:47I'm sorry.
00:57:48I'm sorry.
00:57:49We brought you all this way.
00:57:50Oh, no.
00:57:51It's all right. Nothing at all. Nothing at all.
00:57:52Good night, darling.
00:57:53Good night.
00:57:54Good night, dear.
00:57:55Good night.
00:57:56Good night.
00:57:57I'm sorry.
00:57:58Oh, no, it's all right. Nothing at all. Nothing at all.
00:58:02Good night, darling. Good night.
00:58:04Good night to you. Good night. I'm sorry.
00:58:28Uh, is that your car, the gray one over there?
00:58:33Yes, it is.
00:58:34Is there something wrong with it?
00:58:36Yes, lady, there is. He's parked in front of a fire hydrant.
00:58:43After a week, the strain became too much for me. I decided to take a sleeping pill.
00:58:58Hello. We'll be right there. What?
00:59:11It's already here. It's a boy. He arrived just a half an hour ago. Huh?
00:59:16Okay, he's fine. The doctor says everything's just fine. Yeah.
00:59:21It's wonderful. Wonderful.
00:59:24Give her our love. Give her our love.
00:59:30Ellie.
00:59:32Ellie.
00:59:33Hmm?
00:59:34Remind me to tell you something in the morning, what, Ellie?
00:59:43Tell me what, Stanley? Tell me what?
00:59:46Stanley, wake up!
00:59:48Tell me, is there something about Kay?
00:59:50Stanley!
00:59:51It's a boy.
00:59:52Oh, Stan, oh, isn't that wonderful? A boy.
00:59:54Oh, Stan, oh, isn't that wonderful? A boy.
00:59:58T-iff o'er.
01:00:00Yeah, I'm for fun.
01:00:01I'm for fun, he's a little boy.
01:00:02Of course, a boy!
01:00:03Notician and ngày but new, oldaryn!
01:00:04You have to wait.
01:00:05The boy!
01:00:06Oh, if you're when you miss you!
01:00:07Oh, dear, girl.
01:00:09God, where'd they let them go?
01:00:10No!
01:00:11Oh, dear.
01:00:12Hey, a donkey.
01:00:13Guild Grainsa.
01:00:15God!
01:00:18Your boy!
01:00:20What, Emperor?
01:00:22Oh!
01:00:24Oh!
01:00:25Oh, dear
01:00:27I wonder if they were crazy, or was I?
01:00:39He looked as old as Methuselah to me.
01:00:42All he needed was a derby.
01:00:48Oh, boy. We'll be seeing you soon.
01:00:51Yes, sir.
01:00:52Look at who's mine.
01:00:53Isn't he a darling?
01:00:54Who do you think he's like?
01:00:56He looks exactly like Kay.
01:00:57Oh, I think you're wrong there, Ellie.
01:00:59He's a dunson through and through.
01:01:00Who do they have called?
01:01:01Ed, call him, son, him.
01:01:03I believe they're talking about calling him Herbert.
01:01:06I believe they are.
01:01:08Oh, Herbert, isn't that wonderful?
01:01:10I hope you don't mind.
01:01:12I mean, since you're the maternal grandfather,
01:01:14I'm just waiting for you.
01:01:15Oh, no. Oh, as you say, I know.
01:01:16As a matter of fact, I think Herbert is just the name for it.
01:01:18Oh, very nice.
01:01:21I admit, he looked a little better by the time Kay got him home.
01:01:25Perfect.
01:01:25Look at him.
01:01:27Did you ever see anything so good?
01:01:30Tudum's had a picture taken.
01:01:32When is he going to be Christmas?
01:01:34In five or six months.
01:01:35We want to wait for Reverend Goldsworthy.
01:01:37Come on, Pop.
01:01:38Shall you have your picture taken with the baby?
01:01:39Oh, no, no, no.
01:01:40Oh, we've all had our pictures taken.
01:01:41No, no, no.
01:01:42Come on, old man.
01:01:43Oh, please, Pop.
01:01:43Come on, just do it for me.
01:01:45I want a picture with the two of you together.
01:01:46Yeah, we'll sit him right here.
01:01:48How about that, my boy?
01:01:49Is that all right with you?
01:01:50He's smiling at you.
01:01:51Harry, Sam, catch him just like that.
01:01:53Oh, no, no, no, I don't.
01:01:55There we go.
01:01:57Oh, no, don't give him to me.
01:01:59No, no, you sit down.
01:02:00Now, go on, smile at your grandfather.
01:02:05See, it's no use.
01:02:06Turn him around so we can see his face.
01:02:09Come on, turn him around.
01:02:10That's it.
01:02:11That's it.
01:02:13Oh, see, it's, uh, look.
01:02:15Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
01:02:20Take him, please.
01:02:21Please take him.
01:02:22Oh, you want to be married, my goodness.
01:02:26Stanley, what'd you do to him?
01:02:28What do you mean?
01:02:29I didn't do anything to him.
01:02:30Oh, he's tired.
01:02:31I think he's tired.
01:02:33We really must go.
01:02:34Oh, by the way, Sam, I had this made up for you.
01:02:37It's a photographic record of the baby from the day he was born.
01:02:41Here, rip it in here, and then wait, wait, and take a look at that, and here, here.
01:02:47Isn't it amazing?
01:02:48Why, he changes it every day.
01:02:50Not to me, he doesn't.
01:02:51Coming to us.
01:02:52Here, put it in your pocket.
01:02:53Show the boys, you know.
01:02:54So.
01:02:55Goodbye, dear.
01:02:56Goodbye, darling.
01:02:57Goodbye, Stanley.
01:02:58Take good care of our great big boy.
01:03:02Come here.
01:03:03Come here.
01:03:04How about a great big drink?
01:03:08Huh?
01:03:09Yes, dear.
01:03:11Come in.
01:03:12He's quiet now.
01:03:13Oh, no, no, no.
01:03:14Oh, no.
01:03:15Now, look.
01:03:16It's no use, you know.
01:03:17Oh, Pops, he didn't have anything to do with you.
01:03:18It's just that there were so many other people around him.
01:03:20It scared him.
01:03:21Come on.
01:03:28Oh, isn't he?
01:03:29He's gonna smile.
01:03:31Oh, come on in.
01:03:33See?
01:03:34Everything's all right now.
01:03:36He's not scared anymore, is he, darling.
01:03:39Now, you've got a nice man here.
01:03:41And you're gonna give him a big smile,
01:03:43because you're a good boy.
01:03:45Now, look who's come to see you.
01:03:47Who is that, huh?
01:03:48Where?
01:03:49Who is that?
01:03:50Is that your grandfather?
01:03:51Yeah.
01:03:52Oh, honey, you terrible child.
01:03:57What happened?
01:03:58Nothing, nothing, nothing.
01:03:59He just took a look at me.
01:04:00That's so funny.
01:04:01He's such a good-tempered baby.
01:04:02The doctor said he'd never seen a baby with such a wonderful disposition.
01:04:05Oh, I'm sure.
01:04:06I'm sure.
01:04:07And it isn't because you're a man.
01:04:08He was smiling all over the place at Herbert.
01:04:09Well, now, come on.
01:04:10Let's blow.
01:04:11Let's blow.
01:04:12We've come to apologize.
01:04:13We want to say that we're very sorry for being so rude.
01:04:16Now, now, you tell him you forgive him.
01:04:18Come on, honey.
01:04:19Give him a great big smile and tell him how much...
01:04:20Oh, you little brat.
01:04:21Oh, it's all right, darling.
01:04:22He's gone now.
01:04:23Oh, it's all right.
01:04:24The man is gone.
01:04:25Yeah.
01:04:26You know what I can do?
01:04:27It's your tie.
01:04:28If you just take off your tie.
01:04:29No, Ellie, I'm not going to take off my tie.
01:04:31It's a perfectly nice tie and I happen to like it.
01:04:32It was a present for a little girl.
01:04:33Let's blow.
01:04:34Let's blow it.
01:04:35Let's blow it.
01:04:36We've come to apologize.
01:04:37We've come to apologize.
01:04:38We want to say that we're very sorry for being so rude.
01:04:40Now, now, now, you tell him you forgive him.
01:04:42Come on there, honey.
01:04:43I'll take off your tie.
01:04:44No, Ellie, I'm not going to take off my tie.
01:04:45It's a perfectly nice tie and I happen to like it.
01:04:47It was a present from Tommy and I'm not going to take it off just because he doesn't like it.
01:04:50Oh, Stanley, the way you talk.
01:04:52He's a baby, an innocent little baby.
01:04:54He doesn't know what it is that disturbs him.
01:04:56He is not an innocent little baby.
01:04:58He's an individual with very definite likes and dislikes.
01:05:01As an individual, I respect his right to have likes and dislikes,
01:05:04but I also reserve the right to have a few of my own.
01:05:07From that time on, I gave him a wide berth.
01:05:12It was live and let live between us until one weekend six months later.
01:05:27This the bank's house?
01:05:29Well, yes, but, uh, what...
01:05:42The thing I had feared had come to pass.
01:05:47He had invaded the sanctity of my home.
01:05:51Hi, Pops.
01:05:52Hi, hi, Katie.
01:05:53You have a visitor.
01:05:54It's all out with you, Pops.
01:05:55And you don't mind?
01:05:56Oh, no.
01:05:57I'm delighted.
01:05:58Delighted.
01:05:59He's nice.
01:06:00Pops really is.
01:06:01It's just that...
01:06:02What you two got started to do, Pops.
01:06:03Oh, no.
01:06:04I'm delighted.
01:06:05Delighted.
01:06:06Delighted.
01:06:07He's nice.
01:06:08Pops really is.
01:06:09It's just that...
01:06:10Well, you two got started off on the wrong foot, that's all.
01:06:12And I thought, well, if I left him here for a couple of days alone with you...
01:06:13Alone?
01:06:14Well, I mean, I won't be here myself.
01:06:15I'm going to Boston.
01:06:16But he has to go there and see Mr. Wellsford, you know, the chain store man.
01:06:19And he asked me to come and I said I couldn't leave the baby.
01:06:20That mom said to go ahead and she'd take care of it.
01:06:21Oh, Pops.
01:06:22I know you're going to love him, just as soon as you get to know him.
01:06:23He has been a little揮y.
01:06:24Oh, there's my taxi.
01:06:25I've got to run.
01:06:26Yeah.
01:06:27And remember this, Pops.
01:06:28and remember this, Pops.
01:06:29Pops.
01:06:30Yeah.
01:06:31Pops, I know you're going to love him.
01:06:32Just as soon as you get to know him.
01:06:34He has been a little streaky.
01:06:35Oh, there's my taxi.
01:06:36I've got to run.
01:06:37Yeah.
01:06:38And remember this, Pops.
01:06:39And I went to a little allegiance.
01:06:40Well, I'll make it this.
01:06:41I've got it, Pops.
01:06:42Just as soon as you get to know him.
01:06:44He has been a little streaky.
01:06:45Oh, there's my taxi. I've got to run.
01:06:47No.
01:06:48And remember this, Pops.
01:06:49If he so much as lets out a peep at you,
01:06:51you have my permission to spank him and spank him good.
01:06:52Yeah.
01:06:53Bye.
01:06:53Bye, Mom.
01:06:54Goodbye.
01:06:54Goodbye.
01:06:55Here.
01:07:00Stanley, is that you?
01:07:04Yes, it's me.
01:07:06The most wonderful thing has happened.
01:07:07I thought you'd never get here.
01:07:09Ah, yes, Kay told me.
01:07:12Oh, come up and see him.
01:07:13Quick, quick.
01:07:24Of course, we're not quite organized yet.
01:07:26Well, where is he?
01:07:27I don't want to step on him.
01:07:28In your bureau drawer over there.
01:07:39Well, what is that?
01:07:45Well, that's my dress scarf.
01:07:47Well, what are you doing with my dress?
01:07:50What?
01:07:51What?
01:07:52What?
01:07:53What's going on?
01:07:54I'm out.
01:07:55Look in here.
01:07:57What is he doing with me?
01:07:59What are you eating?
01:08:00What'd you do?
01:08:00Well, he's eating my scarf.
01:08:02Oh, that's all right, dear.
01:08:03It's clean.
01:08:04It can't hurt him, can it?
01:08:05My darling, would you?
01:08:06Does he have to be in that particular drawer with all my shirts?
01:08:10I took the shirts out there, right there.
01:08:11You can put them back now.
01:08:13Oh, lovekins.
01:08:14Oh, lovekins.
01:08:16Oh, Stan, it's so wonderful having a baby in my arms again.
01:08:19Who's a sweet boy?
01:08:21Who's an angel?
01:08:21Look at the shirts.
01:08:22Who's going to sleep in a nice big room?
01:08:25Is he going to sleep in this room?
01:08:26No, he's going to Tommy's room.
01:08:27Where's Tommy going?
01:08:28In the Ben's room.
01:08:29I want him right here so I can hear him if he cries.
01:08:32You know, he's good, but strange house and everything.
01:08:34No mommy or poppy, but he's going to be a good boy, isn't he?
01:08:37Course he is.
01:08:38I'm sorry I can't go to the Dixons, but you're going anyway.
01:08:41I phoned Ruth and she's delighted to have an extra man.
01:08:43It's all set.
01:08:44Yeah, well, I'm not going.
01:08:45Oh, not Stan, Larry.
01:08:46No, no, no, no.
01:08:47I'm not going without you.
01:08:48They're your friends.
01:08:49Oh, that's ridiculous.
01:08:50You can't eat here.
01:08:51There's no food in the house.
01:08:52Of course, there's last night's cold lamp.
01:08:53You don't mind waiting on yourself.
01:08:55Where's Delilah?
01:08:56She's making up Kay's room.
01:08:57Who's going to sleep in Kay's room?
01:08:58You are.
01:08:59Now, look, look, look.
01:09:00Stanley, it's the only room in the house where you can't possibly
01:09:02hear the baby, and I promise Kay you wouldn't be disturbed.
01:09:05Ooh.
01:09:06Everything's ready, Miss Banks.
01:09:08Oh, good.
01:09:08And Delilah, would you mind taking these and sterilizing them?
01:09:11You can use the canning pot.
01:09:12You don't have to tell me.
01:09:13I remember.
01:09:14Mr. Banks, isn't it just wonderful having a baby in the house again?
01:09:16Oh, just wonderful.
01:09:17Just wonderful.
01:09:18Just wonderful.
01:09:19Great, great.
01:09:19Well, let's get you put it on your hands, boy.
01:09:54Let's go.
01:10:24Let's go.
01:10:54All week I look forward to Sunday morning.
01:11:13No alarm clock, no train to catch, no office, just uninterrupted slumber.
01:11:17I just had to let you see him be so cute.
01:11:31What time is it?
01:11:33Six o'clock.
01:11:35Six o'clock?
01:11:36Oh, go back to sleep, dear.
01:11:40Bye.
01:11:40Say bye-bye.
01:11:41Bye-bye.
01:11:43Oh, no.
01:11:47Oh, no.
01:11:51Sunday afternoon, I'd counted on a good 18 holes of golf.
01:11:54But Ellie thought the baby and I should get together.
01:11:56Forty-five minutes later, he finally corked off.
01:12:03Yeah.
01:12:07Come on.
01:12:07Don't it.
01:12:08Don't do it.
01:12:10Come on.
01:12:11Come on.
01:12:20Right here.
01:12:20Come on.
01:12:21Right here.
01:12:21Right here.
01:12:22Come on!
01:12:38Hey, hey, hey!
01:12:39Here's your ball.
01:12:52Hey!
01:12:54Hey!
01:12:58Hey!
01:13:00Hey!
01:13:02Here!
01:13:04Hey!
01:13:06Hey!
01:13:08Hey!
01:13:10Hey!
01:13:12Hey!
01:13:14Where are you dreaming?
01:13:16I just wish you...
01:13:18Here! Here! Here!
01:13:20Here, boys, boys, boys.
01:13:22Now, now, now.
01:13:24Come on, now, let's go over.
01:13:26Let's do it right. Come on.
01:13:30They were nice kids. I was having a good time.
01:13:33Look, come on, two sides.
01:13:50Well, thank you. If you want to watch that dribble, get that...
01:13:55It was a good game.
01:13:57I was wondering whether or not to tell Ellie about it.
01:14:00She'd probably think I was crazy playing ball with a lot of kids.
01:14:20What do you think? You're going with it?
01:14:22Come on, come on.
01:14:24Come on.
01:14:26Come on.
01:14:28Come on.
01:14:30Come on.
01:14:32Come on.
01:14:34Come on.
01:14:36Come on.
01:14:38Come on.
01:14:40Come on.
01:14:50Come on.
01:14:52I suddenly thought maybe Ellie came and got him.
01:15:10I didn't take the train. I flew.
01:15:12I got so homesick for the baby.
01:15:14Where is the baby?
01:15:16Shouldn't he be home by noon?
01:15:17Don't you worry. He's with your father, so he's all right.
01:15:19You should see her, father.
01:15:33Thanks.
01:15:38Police!
01:15:39Hurry up!
01:15:40Hurry up!
01:15:48Hello. Hello. Is anybody here?
01:15:50Anybody here? Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello.
01:15:54Officer, officer, is this...
01:15:55Has anybody turned in a baby here? I've lost a baby.
01:15:57Is it your baby?
01:15:58Oh, no, no, no, no. It's my daughter's baby. It's my grandson.
01:15:59Where'd you lose him?
01:16:00I lost him in the park. It was in the park and in his carriage. I left him for a second. When I came back, he was gone and the carriage was gone.
01:16:03You say you only left him for a second, eh?
01:16:04Oh, well, maybe a minute. I don't know. Five minutes. You know, some kids were playing soccer and I went to watch them.
01:16:08I got kind of interested.
01:16:09And you forgot your grandchild.
01:16:10Well, I guess I did for the minute.
01:16:11That's fine. That's wonderful. They give you a child of mine and you run off and forget him.
01:16:13What's the matter, Jack? You lose your marbles? Oh, wait a minute. This kind of talk is... Do you, did you understand what I said? A baby has been lost. A little baby has...
01:16:23Why don't you do what you're supposed to do? Do something. Get on the television. Tell the types of people to go next.
01:16:28They give you a child of mine and you run off and forget him.
01:16:31What's the matter, Jack? You're losing your marbles?
01:16:33Oh, wait a minute. This kind of talk is...
01:16:35Do you... Did you understand what I said?
01:16:37A baby has been lost. A little baby has...
01:16:39Why don't you do what you're supposed to do?
01:16:41Do something. Get on the television.
01:16:43Teletype or whatever you do.
01:16:44Describe the baby. He's five months...
01:16:46Six months old, wearing a little white...
01:16:48You know what babies wear.
01:16:50He's got on a little cap, I think.
01:16:53Would you know what color his eyes are?
01:16:55Brown, brown, blue. I don't know.
01:16:57But you are sure it's a boy.
01:17:00Yeah, I don't blame you. I don't blame you.
01:17:02You haven't said anything to me. I haven't said to myself.
01:17:04My daughter's home now, waiting for the baby.
01:17:06I don't know what to do. I'm going crazy.
01:17:07I'll do anything. Look, I'll...
01:17:09Big reward, whatever. Whatever I have to do.
01:17:11If you'll just help me.
01:17:12Well, it just so happens we picked up your baby.
01:17:15Oh, thank God.
01:17:16But it wasn't any five minutes you were gone.
01:17:17It was nearer a half an hour.
01:17:20Yes, sir.
01:17:21Where is he? In here?
01:17:22Yeah. Just a minute.
01:17:24What's your daughter's phone number?
01:17:25I'm going to call her up and check with him.
01:17:27Oh, no, don't do that. Don't. Please, please don't do it.
01:17:29Don't do it. You don't know.
01:17:30I couldn't stand it. I couldn't face my daughter.
01:17:33Please, I promise you, I'll do anything if you'll give me the kid.
01:17:35I'll take him right home. I won't stop anywhere.
01:17:37I promise you.
01:17:39Well, I'll talk it over with the boys.
01:17:42They've taken quite a fancy to this kid.
01:17:44If they got any idea you weren't treating him right,
01:17:46you'd never get out of here alive.
01:17:49All right, boys. They've come for him.
01:17:51I dreaded the moment when he'd see me.
01:17:57I knew if he started to cry, I was cooked.
01:18:00I said a little prayer. Don't let him cry.
01:18:03Just this once. Don't let him cry.
01:18:09Come on, son. We're going home.
01:18:11Well, that's my boy. That's my boy.
01:18:27From that time on, I was his pigeon.
01:18:29The day of the baby's christening came at last.
01:18:49He was the center of a little world.
01:18:50His grandparents, his parents, and his godparents,
01:18:53all of us gathered together for their solemn occasion.
01:18:56I couldn't help feeling we were ganging up on him,
01:18:58pinning the name of Herbert on a poor, defenseless child.
01:19:01Suffer the little children to come unto me,
01:19:04and forbid them not,
01:19:06for of such is the kingdom of God.
01:19:08Funny how I had resented the very idea of him,
01:19:11Kay first told us.
01:19:13I was furious at both of them,
01:19:16making me a grandfather.
01:19:18It seemed to spell the end of my life.
01:19:21Now I couldn't imagine life without him.
01:19:23The kingdom of our heavenly Father,
01:19:25now and forevermore.
01:19:27Amen.
01:19:28We were coming to his big moment.
01:19:32We all watched him with bated breath.
01:19:36How would he behave?
01:19:38When the Reverend Galsworthy took him in his arms,
01:19:40would he be terrified?
01:19:41Would he cry?
01:19:43Not that baby.
01:19:45To him, the Reverend Galsworthy,
01:19:47was just another face to be explored.
01:19:49Name this child.
01:20:01Stanley Banks.
01:20:05Stanley Banks.
01:20:05Stanley Banks.
01:20:07Stanley Banks.
01:20:19I baptize thee in the name of the Father,
01:20:25the Son,
01:20:26and the Holy Ghost.
01:20:29Amen.
01:20:31We receive this child
01:20:33in the congregation of Christ's flock,
01:20:36and do sign him with the sign of...
01:20:38Stanley Banks.
01:20:39My grandchild.
01:20:41He shall not be ashamed.
01:20:42My first grandchild.
01:20:44THE END
01:21:14THE END
