00:39as Gaza's health ministry says that more than 92 people have been killed in the last 48 hours.
00:52Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:54My name is Belen de los Santos. I'm from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:58We'll begin with the news.
01:09Now we continue with the information.
01:11Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary Easter ceasefire with Ukraine
01:16from Saturday until midnight on April 21st.
01:19The announcement came during the Russian President's meeting with the Chief of the General Staff
01:25Valery Gerasimov in Moscow.
01:27In the sense, Putin expressed his hope that Kiev would demonstrate goodwill and adhere to the ceasefire,
01:33although he highlighted that troops would be ready to respond to any provocation or aggressive behavior.
01:39Finally, Putin stated that Ukraine's reaction to the ceasefire would be a clear indicator
01:45of whether Kiev is sincerely willing to engage in negotiations to end the conflict.
01:51Shortly after the President's statement,
01:53the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the ceasefire, calling on Kiev to reciprocate.
01:58Guided by humanitarian considerations, today from 1800 hours to midnight, Sunday to Monday,
02:11the Russian side declares an Easter ceasefire.
02:15I order all hostilities to cease during this period.
02:18We proceed from the assumption that the Ukrainian side will follow our example.
02:26We continue on topic as the governments of Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 246 prisoners of war
02:33from both armies following the mediation of the United Arab Emirates.
02:37The Russian Defense Ministry reported that 246 soldiers were returned to Moscow
02:43while the exact same number of Ukrainian prisoners of war were released by the Russian army.
02:50The exchange included 31 wounded Ukrainian prisoners in exchange for 15 Russian soldiers
02:57that were requiring urgent medical attention.
03:00On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an Easter truce,
03:04a decision that he hopes would show Kiev's readiness and ability to fulfill the agreement
03:10and to engage in peace talks.
03:17Meanwhile, in Hungary, the government says that admitting Ukraine into the European Union
03:23would imply a protracted war with Russia and not peace.
03:28Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Ukraine cannot be accepted into the Union
03:33because it does not meet the necessary requirements given that it does not stand on its own
03:38nor is it a sovereign state because its eastern border is currently unknown
03:43and the size of its territory and population cannot be determined.
03:47Orban also said that Ukraine's dependence on financing from the United States and Europe
03:52means that the bloc would have to pick up the tab for its army and sponsor its hostilities.
04:03And in other news, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragachi met with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Italy
04:09in a new round of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.
04:13This second round of indirect negotiations, this time held at the Omani Embassy in Rome,
04:21involved four hours of dialogue mediated by the Omani Foreign Minister.
04:25After the meeting, the Iranian Foreign Minister confirmed that the process had entered a new phase
04:32as the delegations managed to bring positions closer on the basis of the future agreement.
04:38Both sides agreed that as of Wednesday, April 23rd,
04:42technical teams would begin to design the concrete framework of a possible pact.
04:47During three days of work in Oman, nuclear and economic experts
04:51will address the complex operational details to be defined.
05:02It was a good meeting.
05:05And I can say that the negotiations are moving forward.
05:08This time we managed to reach a better understanding on a series of principles and goals.
05:22The negotiations needed to continue and enter the next phase before the expert meetings could begin.
05:30Technical discussions at the expert level will begin in Oman,
05:33on Wednesday of this week.
05:41The experts will have more time to go into the details.
05:47To design a framework for an agreement.
05:51And then we will meet again in Oman next Saturday.
05:56To review the results of the expert's work.
05:59And U.S. President Donald Trump is considering to remove the head of the Federal Reserve,
06:11Jerome Powell, for his criticism of the tariffs imposed by Washington.
06:16Jerome Powell opted not to lower interest rates and warned that it is highly likely
06:21that the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump
06:24would increase inflation and slow down the country's economic growth.
06:28On April 2nd, the U.S. head of state announced the imposition of tariffs on almost all imported products,
06:35creating a global trade war.
06:37In view of the negative impact on the international economy,
06:40Trump ordered a 90-day pause on this measure
06:43for imports from countries that have entered into trade negotiations with the White House.
06:49Well, in Canada, only 10 days before the elections,
06:58polling stations have started to operate throughout the country,
07:01receiving citizens who wish to vote in advance.
07:03Canadians are able to vote early from April 18th to the 21st
07:08at their assigned polling station to elect members of the House of Commons
07:12for the 45th session of the National Assembly.
07:16All Canadians over the age of 18 can also vote by mail until April 22nd.
07:22And according to polls and recent debates between the main candidates,
07:26the leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney,
07:30remains the favorite so far.
07:32Carney maintains his speech to defend Canada
07:35against the tariffs imposed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.

08:05Welcome back to From the South.
08:19We continue with more information.
08:21Israel continues its genocidal campaign against the Palestinian population.
08:25As the Gaza Health Ministry said,
08:27that more than 92 people had been killed in the last 48 hours.
08:31Israeli drone attacks have targeted residential areas
08:34in the Shuhayah and Tufar neighborhoods of Gaza City,
08:39as well as Beit Hanun in northern Gaza,
08:41with reports stating that at least 52 people had been killed
08:45by Israeli attacks in the enclave since dawn.
08:49Also, several wounded Gasson children were taken to the Nazar Hospital in Han Yunus
08:54following an Israeli attack on Amawasi area,
08:57established as an alleged humanitarian zone.
09:01Israel has killed over 51,000 people
09:04since the start of the genocidal campaign on October 7, 2023.
09:13Meanwhile, Levin and the Secretary General of the Islamic Resistance Movement,
09:17Hezbollah Naim Qasem,
09:19stated that the resistance would not accept the calls for disarmament
09:23made by the Israeli occupation.
09:25During a speech broadcast,
09:27he announced that the Israeli army continues its attacks
09:29despite the ceasefire agreement.
09:32According to Qasem's statement,
09:33the Israeli regime's talks of disarming the Lebanese resistance
09:37comes in the context of plans to occupy most of the Lebanese territory
09:42as part of the Sionis expansionist project
09:45and aim at weakening Lebanon.
09:47The leader also highlighted that the resistance in the territory
09:50has made great achievements in the last 40 years,
09:53assuring that thanks to it,
09:56the Israeli occupiers were expelled from Lebanon in the year 2000.
10:00We will not allow anyone to disarm Hezbollah
10:11or disarm the resistance
10:13because Hezbollah is one resistance.
10:15The idea of disarmament is out of the dictionary.
10:21Does anyone expect a strategic defense dialogue
10:25while warplanes are flying over our heads?
10:28The occupation is in the South,
10:30and the U.S. is applying pressure
10:32so that the discussion takes place under coercion
10:35and according to imposed dictates?
10:37This is considered not a dialogue.
10:40This is considered surreal.
10:41And the death toll from recent U.S. airstrikes
10:45in the port of Ras Esa in western Yemen
10:47has risen to 80, with 150 wounded.
10:51According to the Public Health Office in Hodeidah Governorate,
10:55these are preliminary figures
10:56and are expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
11:01This new offensive has become the most lethal
11:03since the United States began its operations against Yemen
11:06under Donald Trump's administration.
11:09The United States Central Command sent calm
11:11justified this operation
11:12as an attempt to cut off illegal revenues
11:15which, according to Washington,
11:17financed Houthi actions in the region.
11:19However, the Yemeni authorities denounced
11:21that the real objective is to weaken their resistance.
11:30And humanitarian organizations
11:31are urging the international community
11:33to put pressure on Israel
11:35to stop its siege against residential areas in Syria.
11:39Human rights groups have called
11:41on multilateral organizations
11:42to protect civilian victims
11:44from the Zionist onslaught of the last few months.
11:48They have also denounced
11:49that land incursions by the Tel Aviv army
11:51are in breach of the core principles
11:53of the United Nations Charter.
11:56Therefore, they demand that the parties
11:57to respect international humanitarian law,
12:01to ensure a cessation of violence,
12:03and to prevent a security crisis in the region.
12:11In other news,
12:23in Ecuador, the state-owned company PetroEcuador
12:26confirmed that a pipeline rupture
12:28caused a new oil spill
12:29on a highway in the Amazonian province of Orellana.
12:33Authorities confirmed the incident
12:34hours after it began
12:36due to citizens posting several videos
12:38showing how the crude oil was spreading
12:41across the road and nearby areas.
12:43PetroEcuador stated that the pipeline damage
12:46occurred due to the impact
12:48of a low-boid-type vehicle
12:49that was traveling through the area.
12:52Currently, PetroEcuador
12:53and the Ministry of the Environment
12:55are assessing the magnitude of the oil spill
12:57and its potential consequences.
12:59On March 13th,
13:01another rupture occurred
13:02near the municipality of Quininde
13:04that left 150,000 people
13:07in need of humanitarian assistance.

13:34Welcome back to From the South.
13:42On Saturday,
13:43Venezuela hosted celebrations
13:44for the 215th anniversary
13:47of the declaration of its independence,
13:50the first step towards
13:51the nation's independency.
13:52In the Venezuelan capital,
13:54Caracas,
13:54Mayor Carmen Melendez
13:56and the head of the government
13:57in the capital district,
13:59Nahum Fernandez,
14:00along with part of the diplomatic corps
14:02accredited to the country,
14:04laid a breath
14:05before the statue
14:06of Liberator Timón Bolívar.
14:08This ceremony
14:08preceded a solemn session
14:10at the Santa Rosa de Lima chapel,
14:12which included
14:13a theatrical representation
14:15about the women
14:16who sacrificed their lives
14:17to free Venezuela
14:18from the Spanish Empire.
14:20And the president of Colombia,
14:27Gustavo Petro,
14:28declared a sanitary emergency
14:30due to yellow fever
14:31and activated
14:32an integral national plan
14:33for massive vaccination.
14:35Petro explained
14:36that in two months,
14:37the entire Colombia population
14:38must be vaccinated
14:39and insisted that
14:41health and education personnel
14:42as well as soldiers
14:43must be prioritized.
14:45At least 20 people
14:46have lost their lives
14:47since the beginning
14:48of the year
14:48due to the increase
14:49in yellow fever cases,
14:51which has led the government
14:52to declare this emergency.
14:54The spread of the disease
14:55is related to climatic conditions
14:57since high temperatures
14:58allow mosquitoes
14:59to ascend the mountains
15:01and reach the cities.
15:08Meanwhile,
15:08in Ecuador,
15:09the president
15:09of the Citizens Revolution movement,
15:11Luisa González,
15:13reiterated her denunciation
15:14of electoral fraud
15:16after the second round
15:17of elections in the country.
15:18The statement comes
15:19after a report
15:20of the observers
15:21of the Organization
15:22of American States,
15:24which points out
15:25identified inconveniences,
15:27for example,
15:28that the ink
15:28used to mark the ballots
15:30was transferred
15:30between the political options.
15:32This generated confusion
15:34in the interpretation
15:34of the vote
15:35and in some cases
15:37derived in their annulment.
15:39Luisa González declared
15:40that the Citizens Revolution
15:42would present evidence
15:43of the manipulation
15:44of the voting records.
15:46From Ecuador
15:47and other parts
15:48of the world,
15:48experts have pointed out
15:50that the elections
15:50were held
15:51without minimum
15:52democratic conditions
15:53or guarantees.
16:08In Cuba,
16:09the city of Santiago de Cuba
16:10prepares to host
16:11a new edition
16:12of the Caribbean Festival,
16:14also known as
16:15the Fire Party,
16:15from July 3rd
16:16to the 9th this year.
16:18The event,
16:19considered one of the most important
16:20in Cuba's cultural calendar,
16:22brings together
16:23representatives
16:24of Caribbean popular cultures
16:26in a celebration
16:27of traditions,
16:28art,
16:29and regional thought.
16:30This year's edition
16:31will be dedicated
16:32to Curaçao
16:32and will feature activities
16:34such as
16:34the International Colloquium
16:36The Caribbean
16:37That Unites Us,
16:38where participants
16:39will discuss the history,
16:40identity,
16:41and culture
16:42of Caribbean peoples.
16:44Among the festival's
16:45most notable events
16:46are the Serpent Parade,
16:48the Cimarron Tribute
16:49in El Cobre,
16:50and the Burning of the Devil,
16:52a closing ceremony
16:53symbolizing
16:54spiritual renewal.
16:55And a group
17:01integrated by
17:02Latin American migrants
17:03living in Brazil
17:04visited Colombia
17:05for the first time
17:06accompanied
17:07by the Rhythms
17:08and Cumbia Airs,
17:10an example
17:10of integration.
17:11Our correspondent,
17:12Hernán Tobar,
17:13with the details.
17:13They came to Colombia
17:20from Sao Paulo,
17:21Brazil.
17:21With their instruments
17:22and folkloric sounds,
17:24they retake musical elements
17:25of the cumbia,
17:26a rhythm that has crossed
17:27the entire
17:28South American continent.
17:30The essence of
17:37Cumbia Calavera
17:38is in our sacred heart,
17:40the Latin American heart,
17:42and the cumbia
17:43that was born in Colombia
17:44and that crossed
17:45everything
17:46and became another story
17:48of the cumbia,
17:49and now we
17:50are telling another story.
17:53We came to Colombia
17:54to know the cumbia
17:55because there is not
17:56a Colombian member
17:57in our group yet,
17:58but here we are researching.
18:02The cumbia created
18:03and still brings
18:04a message
18:05of Latin American
18:06integration,
18:07of peace,
18:08of being together.
18:09It's a very nice rhythm.
18:14Their costumes
18:15are inspired
18:16by the iconography
18:17of the Mexican
18:18Day of the Dead
18:19and their members
18:19represent an amalgam
18:21of nationalities.
18:22Migrants who reside
18:23in Sao Paulo
18:24from Argentina,
18:26Chile,
18:27Cuba,
18:27Uruguay,
18:28and Togo,
18:29an aspect
18:30that nourishes
18:30cumbia calavera
18:31both culturally
18:32and musically.
18:34There is no
18:39Brazilian cumbia,
18:40the language
18:41is another frontier
18:42so the fact
18:43that we are migrants
18:44and that we play
18:45wind and percussion
18:46instruments
18:46with that rhythm
18:47helps us
18:47to integrate
18:48in some way,
18:49to be in community
18:51because the language
18:52as I said
18:53is a frontier
18:53so the rest
18:54of South America
18:55speaks Spanish
18:56so we communicate
18:57in Spanish
18:58no matter
18:58if someone
18:59has an Uruguayan accent.
19:03Argentinian accent,
19:04in the end,
19:05cumbia brings us together,
19:07art brings us together
19:08and makes us show
19:09our culture.
19:11The group founded in 2016
19:18participated with great success
19:20in the Carnival of Sao Paulo
19:21Street in 2017,
19:23which earned them local
19:24and international recognition,
19:26maintaining their iconographic
19:27attire adorned with flowers
19:29and skull makeup,
19:30and the instrumental contribution
19:31that gives their music
19:32expressive force,
19:33relevance,
19:34and a capacity
19:35of remembrance
19:35in the listener.
19:40I think the challenge
19:45and the great thing
19:46was to be able
19:46to play cumbia
19:47to understand many places
19:48where that cumbia comes from.
19:50Because we have
19:51Colombian cumbia
19:52and also, for example,
19:53we mix with Andean rhythms,
19:54there are things
19:55from Argentine cumbia
19:56and things from Brazilian rhythms
19:58placed within cumbia,
19:59so it's like that
20:00a great commonplace
20:00that we have.
20:01Their presentations
20:05recreate a party atmosphere
20:06using circus elements,
20:08providing the audience
20:09with musical magic
20:10and a carnival atmosphere.
20:11Hernán Dario Tabarga

20:16And like this,
20:17we have come to the end
20:18of this news brief.
