00:00Florida State University student Ryan Siedergren right now.
00:03So, Ryan, thank you for being with us on a really difficult day.
00:07And we've been looking at your video.
00:10You were actually in the student union, I guess, when those shots rang out.
00:14What happened? Tell us what you saw and heard.
00:17Yeah, I was. I was in the bowling alley, which is on the lowest level of the union.
00:22And next door, the bowling alley has doors.
00:24Next door to the bowling alley is a bar that is open to the rest of the union.
00:28They don't have doors or anything.
00:30So, all of a sudden, everyone in the bar started running.
00:33And we noticed this is not right.
00:35Something is fairly wrong here.
00:38So, we decided we need to at least go hide for the time being.
00:43We went and hid in another room that had glass where we could see the front.
00:49But we were just kind of like, let's hide the best we can for now and then move as needed.
00:53Once we got, once we got, like, FSCPD in sight, that was when we moved further to, a little bit further into the back of the bowling alley where the lane machines set the pins.
01:11And then once we were back there, about 10 minutes later, they got us.
01:17Yeah, Ryan, it just sounds horrifying.
01:19Did you hear shots?
01:21And what went through your mind as you realized you were in an incident like this?
01:26I hear shots.
01:29I think in the moment, it was just kind of realizing that, you know, I grew up in a generation of where school shootings and drills for school shootings are common and normal almost.
01:46And so I knew, you know, kind of within a minute of it happening, what was going on and just that we need to hide and pray and, you know, wait for FSU police and Tallahassee police to come secure everything.
02:01And when they did, I mean, tell us about that moment when they had secured the area that you were in, confirmed that you could leave.
02:10I mean, let me ask you, are you out?
02:12You're out now, right?
02:13Where are you?
02:14I'm back in my apartment.
02:15Yes.
02:15Okay, so how was it getting out of this crisis situation?
02:22So they came in, they had the long gun and, you know, just kind of said, you know, how many people are back here?
02:29We had about 40 with us.
02:31And then we went out and we, they kind of guided us out of the building, the main way.
02:41And then they said, after making sure everyone was okay and no one was hurt, get away from campus, go this way, get away from campus, and don't come back to campus.
02:55Friends and all the people, I imagine you've reached out.
02:58First, I hope you called your parents, your mom, dad, and then friends, trying to make sure everybody that you know and love is safe.
03:05Yeah, within like five seconds, I immediately text my parents, hearing of a shooter in the building.
03:12I'm safe, I'm safe, I'm hiding, and then, you know, just kind of keep constant communication with everyone, having friends reach out and friends I haven't talked to in 10 years that have been reaching out and just making sure I'm okay.
03:27And I'm just grateful for, you know, people check up on me and for law enforcement and everyone just running into, everyone in law enforcement running in to protect us.
03:39Absolutely.
03:41Ryan, we really appreciate you joining us and we're happy that you and your friends are safe and that you've reached out to your mom and dad and that they know it too.
03:50Thank you very much for being with us.
