00:00Hi, if you subscribed I'd be most pleased, thank you.
00:07This case takes place in the United Kingdom in Sheffield in the year 2024.
00:13Meet Saqqad Ali. Saqqad Ali was born in 2000. He grew up within a close-knit family and was
00:21described as caring, thoughtful and devoted to his siblings. There isn't a great deal public
00:27about his early life and his adolescence, but what we do know is that in his twenties he became
00:34involved in drug dealing. It's not known whether or not this was his main line of income or if this
00:40was a low-level side income. He managed to keep this line of work to himself, making sure that
00:45his family didn't know. But although his operations were out of sight of his family, he attracted the
00:51attention of others, others who saw Saqqad as a threat and believed him to be competition.
00:59Meet Barney Griffin, born on the 8th of November 2006, Jack Douglas, born on the 28th of June 2007,
01:08and Rebecca Moore, born on the 27th of July 1999. By 2024, Barney and Jack were relatively fresh out of
01:17school. Barney had a relatively normal upbringing by his mother, though he suffered significant
01:23illness as a child. He was known locally as a talented youth footballer, and he showed early
01:29promise in the sport. But he eventually drifted away. On the other hand, Jack's early life was
01:35marked by instability and hardship. His parents divorced when he was just eight, and not only this,
01:42the social services designated him as a child in need. Jack had behavioural problems throughout
01:48his childhood and was diagnosed with ADHD, though he was not constantly taking his medication.
01:54As the two boys grew older, they moved away from the innocence of youth. Following secondary school,
02:00they had very few job prospects and appeared to have no formal employment. Somewhere along the way,
02:07they had been taken into a notorious nationwide drug network operating through multiple dedicated
02:15phone lines. These phone numbers were called the Frank Line, the Bruno Line, and the AJ Line,
02:21named after the famous British boxers. Barney and Jack were working for the Frank Line,
02:27and the Frank Line dealt with the hardcore range of drugs, heroin, and crack cocaine. The Frank Line serviced
02:35many counties across the UK, and you don't have to look far before you come across news articles
02:40covering the arrests of dealers linked to this particular phone line, be that in Birmingham,
02:45Suffolk, or Yorkshire. Each line had a direct hierarchy with organisers at the top,
02:51and street level dealers or couriers at the bottom. Barney and Jack were younger dealers,
02:57and they were to carry out the dealings and orders on the ground. They both had no prior convictions,
03:03which is rather rare for their line of work. Within Sheffield, this drug network exerted
03:08territorial control, especially in the Burngrieve area of the city. The most chilling evidence of
03:15their influence was the violent eliminations of their rivals. In November of 2020, 20-year-old
03:21Rami Salam was shot dead in a Sheffield apartment by members of this gang. There have been several other
03:28acts of aggression and intimidation as the various phone lines expanded from their stronghold in
03:34Burngrieve. Sadly, one of the latest was this case. And then we have Rebecca Moore. She was associated
03:41with Barney and Jack, and she would often buy crack cocaine from the two. Rebecca worked as a lady of
03:48the night. She had previous convictions, including possession of an offensive weapon, and had once
03:53attacked an emergency worker. She maintained close ties to drug dealers from the Frank Line,
03:59largely due to her drug dependency. In the early hours of the morning on the 9th of March 2024,
04:06Jack Douglas, Barney Griffin, and Rebecca Moore all met up at a flat owned by a man named Kenny Thornhill.
04:14Kenny Thornhill's flat was a familiar spot and was a known meeting place for those involved with drug
04:20taking and selling. On this night, Kenny was unwell and was in bed. But the other three,
04:26they began to discuss their business arrangements quietly. They discussed the fact that other people
04:32had been operating in their territory. Barney Griffin was agitated and was often possessive of the
04:38territory he felt was rightfully theirs, and Jack Douglas was eager to prove himself. The three were
04:45heavily intoxicated with alcohol and other illegal substances, and all they needed was a trigger.
04:52They began talking about Saqqad Ali. They knew that he had stepped onto their territory,
04:58threatening their profits and disrespecting their authority. They agreed at Kenny's flat that this
05:05couldn't continue, and a decision was swiftly made. Barney turned abruptly to Rebecca Moore,
05:12and said bluntly, Ring that one. He pointed at Saqqad's name on a list of mobile phone numbers.
05:19It made sense that Rebecca knew when and where other drug dealers dealt, as she was the customer.
05:26Obediently, Rebecca picked up her phone and called Saqqad's number, and he picked up.
05:33Rebecca spoke in a soft, enticing tone, promising to buy drugs, perform intimacy, anything to ensure
05:41that Saqqad appeared at the chosen spot. The trap was set. After this phone call, Barney, Jack and
05:49Rebecca left the flat, taking with them a number of knives. From that point on, they all referred to
05:56Saqqad by a code name, Ghost. In the dim glow of the street lights, the three spoke outside,
06:02talking through the plan. Rebecca was the bait, luring Saqqad in, while Barney and Jack were the
06:10enforcers, ready and willing to send a brutal message. Meanwhile, Saqqad Ali had spent the evening
06:17at his friend's house in Upperthorpe Sheffield. They had been relaxing, watching boxing on TV,
06:23playing video games, and generally enjoying each other's company. Until around 4am, when Saqqad's
06:30phone rang. On the other end was Rebecca Moore. They had arranged to meet at Ponderosa Park,
06:37a local spot nearby. Rebecca wanted to buy 0.2 grams of crack, and she hinted at the prospect of sex.
06:46Saqqad found this offer tempting enough to leave his friends flat, and to venture out into the cold,
06:52dark Sheffield morning. Saqqad likely felt relaxed and confident as he walked towards the meeting
06:58spot. This kind of transaction wouldn't have been unusual for him. He would have been used to meeting
07:04people just like this. At around 4.24am, Saqqad saw Rebecca waiting on a path in Ponderosa Park.
07:12They briefly greeted each other, exchanging a few words as he approached, until two sets of heavy
07:19footprints sounded close behind. Suddenly, the two young men appeared from the darkness. They were
07:25Barney Griffin and Jack Douglas. The two advanced rapidly, with their intentions clear. Without
07:32hesitation, Jack and Barney both drew large knives. Some sources claim that these knives were more like
07:40machetes. In this moment, Saqqad instinctively pulled out his own knife in preparation for defending
07:46himself. Saqqad was likely extremely concerned about being outnumbered and cornered. He began backing
07:53away cautiously. A brief, chaotic, and deadly confrontation ensued, lasting two minutes. Saqqad
08:02swung his knife defensively, but aggressively, slicing the air that spanned between them. Saqqad was hoping to
08:09deter his attackers, but Jack and Barney could sense his fear, and they relentlessly pursued him.
08:17Jack and Barney began swinging their blades with intent, but they didn't only slice into the bitterly
08:22cold air. They began slicing into Saqqad's flesh. Realizing the severity of the situation, Saqqad pleaded
08:30desperately. He called out,
08:33All right lads, now I'm hurt. Leave it.
08:36His cries echoed through the park, and they were heard clearly by people who lived nearby. But his
08:43attackers offered no mercy, and chillingly, Rebecca stood approximately thirty meters away,
08:50watching the attack unfold. The two boys continued their assault with determined aggression,
08:56ignoring his pleas, and delivering blow after blow with brutal force. Saqqad tried his best to fight
09:04back, but his attempts were futile. It was two against one, and he barely even made a scratch on
09:10the two attackers. In total, Saqqad suffered sixty knife wounds, including multiple defensive cuts to
09:17his hands and arms, as he attempted to use his hands to grab the blades. But the final blow was a
09:24deep stab to his upper thigh, that severed his femoral artery and vein. Immediately, his strength drained
09:31away, as his blood flowed freely, soaking into the cold, damp earth. Saqqad staggered, struggling
09:39desperately. He tried to regain his footing, but collapsed only seconds later, overwhelmed by pain
09:46and a loss of blood. The attackers saw how their attack had left Saqqad in an irreversible state of
09:52injury, and they decided to flee into the darkness, leaving him alone to die in the silence that
09:59followed. Saqqad fought desperately to stay conscious, and he tried to pull himself up,
10:04but he was breathing heavily, and as his body began to shut down, he was unable to move.
10:11Nearby residents had heard the commotion, and they quickly arrived, desperately trying to help.
10:17They called the emergency services, but it was already too late. By the time the paramedics arrived,
10:24Saqqad lay motionless. Despite their best efforts, the injuries he suffered were catastrophic,
10:30and at 5.09am, he was pronounced dead. Shortly after the attack, at approximately 4.26am,
10:38Jack Douglas, Barney Griffin, and Rebecca Moore regrouped briefly and spoke to each other about
10:44what had just happened. The three were seen together, but they quickly dispersed as the
10:50emergency services began arriving. Jack and Barney hurried back to Kenny Thornhill's home.
10:56Their clothing and gloves were heavily bloodstained. However, there were two other young women at the
11:02flat. Realising the urgent need to remove evidence, they instructed these two young women to leave the
11:08flat immediately. But little did Jack and Barney know, these two women were in the flat earlier,
11:14and had heard their entire conversation, and they would later become key witnesses in the case.
11:21Barney and Jack quickly discarded their incriminating clothing, carefully covering a minor injury that
11:27Barney had sustained in the struggle. Meanwhile, Rebecca fled to the home of an acquaintance to
11:32seek shelter and financial help. Her name is Kelly Baker Finnegan. She will also become
11:39another key witness in the case. In a state of intoxication, Rebecca confessed openly to Kelly,
11:46admitting that she had lured a man to his death. She described vividly witnessing a violent
11:52confrontation, referring to the attack as a sword fight. She very openly stated that she had arranged
11:59the ambush to protect the Franklines territory. She relayed the events, stating that she had a key
12:06role in Sarkad's death. And what's more, she had absolutely no remorse for what she had done.
12:14When the police arrived at the scene, they immediately secured the area and started taking
12:18witness statements from nearby residents. They also noticed CCTV nearby, which was swiftly analyzed,
12:26showing the entire encounter. Other CCTV spotted the group of three, and they could be tracked for
12:32a fair distance before they scattered. The police also analyzed Sarkad's phone records, and noticed
12:39several calls and messages made by a woman named Rebecca Moore. They quickly put together that this
12:45was the woman in the CCTV. For 48 hours, the police continued their investigation, fairly confident
12:52with the overwhelming evidence that they had already acquired. But ultimately, the police force's
12:58investigation to locate and arrest the murderers wasn't required. Over the next few days, Jack and
13:05Barney started to feel immense guilt and fear for what they had done. And so, on Tuesday the 12th of March,
13:12Barney and Jack voluntarily went to the police station in Sheffield and handed themselves in. The two
13:20boys were promptly arrested. During the subsequent questioning, they maintained their silence, giving
13:27investigators only, no comment responses. It's assumed they did this not to keep information from the
13:33police, but more to protect their chances of a favorable outcome at trial. Now, despite having the two
13:40boys, Rebecca Moore was proving to be more elusive and hard to find, but the police were searching.
13:46Rebecca had no fixed address, which proved to be somewhat challenging. However, later the same day
13:52that the boys turned themselves in, she was found and arrested. Initially, she attempted to evade
13:59responsibility by giving a false name and repeatedly denied her involvement. This was captured on the
14:05arresting officer's body cam, which I shall now play. What's your name, my love, please? Hey, Lauren.
14:12Lauren, have you got any ID on you or anything, please? No, I don't. Why? I'm not doing anything. No, no, I'm not saying you have,
14:15but we're just looking for somebody. I've only just come out today. Out of? Out of my friend's house, just right here. Right.
14:22Have you got, like, a bank card or anything on you? I don't know my friend's house, Lauren.
14:29And your surname? Smith. What? Normal spelling. Yeah, it's a T-H. And what's your date of birth,
14:36please? What's your date of birth? It's the 18th of October, 1998.
14:40Just come up to where I am, please. Just take your hat off for me.
14:52Oh, yeah. What? Yeah. Your name's Rebecca Moore, isn't it?
14:56You're what? You're Rebecca, right. At this time, Rebecca, listen to me, okay? So, at this time,
15:03you're under arrest on suspicion of murder, okay? Because it's been, you're led to being involved
15:08in the murder of Sycard Ali, okay? No, no, no, no, no, no. This was on, this was on the 9th of March,
15:142024. Listen. Okay? So, you do not have to say anything. It may harm your defence. Do not mention,
15:20when questioned, something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in
15:24evidence, okay? Why am I? Why am I? Why am I? Why am I? Why am I? Why am I? Why am I?
15:27Rebecca's facade crumbled under further questioning. When questioned by the police,
15:32she openly admitted to setting him up, saying that the boys killed him to protect their turf.
15:38Rebecca likely believed that not physically attacking Sarkad meant that she was innocent
15:43of murder. Her ignorance was her undoing. She fatally misunderstood the law and her pivotal
15:50role in orchestrating the murder. And not only this, while she was held in prison on remand,
15:56she openly admitted to prison officers and fellow inmates that she was the one who set up the ambush.
16:03She openly stated that she orchestrated the attack to protect the Frank lines territory,
16:09describing the incident to others in prison with unsettling levity. She even boasted about planning
16:15to fake mental illness to avoid all consequences. The prison officers who she boasted to became witnesses
16:21at the trial. Investigators quickly pieced together the evidence, the CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts
16:28from the residents, those who overheard the planning at Kenny's apartment that night, phone records,
16:34and incriminating statements made by Rebecca. These firmly established each individual's role in the
16:40attack. It confirmed that Barney and Jack had carried large knives intended specifically for violence
16:47related to their drug trade, while Rebecca had actively lured Sarkad into their deadly trap.
16:53In the months following the murder, the case rapidly moved through the courts before landing
16:58at Sheffield Crown Court due to its severity. On the 24th of May 2024, Barney and Jack pleaded guilty
17:06to murder and possession of knives. They finally fully admitted their role in the fatal stabbing.
17:12From this confession, the boys avoided a full trial. However, their sentencing would wait until
17:18proceedings against the third defendant, Rebecca Moore, were concluded. Rebecca pleaded not guilty,
17:25and denied her involvement or murderous intent. She genuinely believed this, and therefore she
17:31prepared to face trial by jury. In October of 2024, Rebecca's trial commenced. The prosecution presented
17:40evidence that Rebecca knowingly led Sarkad into a trap. They cited evidence from her previous admissions,
17:46CCTV, and text messages. After the prosecution rested, Rebecca took to the stand, and firmly
17:53denied involvement in planning or inciting violence against Sarkad. Rebecca portrayed herself as a
17:59vulnerable addict, caught in circumstances beyond her control. She insisted that Barney and Jack had
18:06given her Sarkad's number solely for a drug deal, and claimed that her intentions that night were
18:12genuine. She described herself as a filthy a** who wanted nothing but drugs and sex, nothing sinister.
18:20Rebecca claimed that when she witnessed the attack, she was shocked and panicked. She claimed she hid in
18:26the bushes terrified and confused before fleeing the scene. She claimed that her confessions to the police
18:32were the true set-up, and were exaggerations due to her intoxicated state. She also said that she
18:38never boasted about the attack to the prison guard or other inmates. Rebecca also refuted her friend's
18:44testimony, Kelly. But the evidence against her was overwhelming. In a final statement she said,
18:51I would never do anything like that to Sarkad. In November of 2024, Rebecca Moore was found guilty of
18:58murder. As the guilty verdict was read out, Rebecca initially showed no emotion. But moments later,
19:06as the reality set in, she burst out in anger and distress. She shouted from the dock,
19:13I didn't even do it. Rebecca then continued to loudly protest and sobbed, and repeatedly insisted that she
19:21was innocent. Security guards had to intervene and escorted her out as she kept shouting and interrupting
19:28the court proceedings. During the sentencing, the judge acknowledged that Barney and Jack were
19:33teenagers who may have themselves been recruited or corrupted. However, he made it clear that this
19:40did not excuse their actions. Barney Griffin was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term
19:46of 16 years, meaning he will not be able to be released until at least 2040. Jack Douglas was
19:53sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 15 years. Rebecca Moore too was sentenced to life
19:59in prison, but with a minimum term of 15 years too. Sarkad's family have spoken about their devastation
20:07and love for him in the aftermath of his murder. His mother described the moment she learned of his
20:12death as the worst nightmare of every parent. She has said that their lives have changed forever,
20:19and that the family was left completely heartbroken by his loss. The family expressed gratitude to
20:25everyone who tried to help Sarkad that night, and thanked the police for their efforts in bringing
20:30the killers to justice. The case of Sarkad is tragic, but it also speaks to the dangers of getting involved in
20:38the violent underworld of drug dealing. In today's society, people who run these organizations are capable of
20:45extreme violence, and lower ranking members are rewarded when they commit violence against their enemies.
20:51Sarkad is one of many people who have lost their lives in this terrible way.
