00:00Wow, my God.
00:02What happened?
00:03Oh, whoa, whoa.
00:04What happened?
00:05Oh, calm down.
00:08What happened?
00:09What happened?
00:11Ah, f***.
00:12Albert, I can't look.
00:13What happened?
00:17Get in the f***, get down.
00:20On a summer afternoon, officers from the Ellenville Village Police Department are informed about
00:25a missing person.
00:26What ensues is a case with a chain of events fueled by delusional accusations, killings,
00:32and connections to iconic pop stars that will forever leave its mark.
00:36Most of the following body cam footage has never been seen before.
00:41So, you lied to me?
00:43Yeah, it's you.
00:45Why did you lie to me?
00:46Because I'm evil.
00:47It's the afternoon of July 23rd, 2016, and 52-year-old Mary Gilbert has not been seen
00:53or heard from in approximately three and a half hours.
00:57As her daughter, Cherie, informs authorities, a foreboding sense of dismay begins to descend
01:02upon the scene.
01:04Hello?
01:05Hi.
01:05Did you call?
01:06Yes.
01:06I have a sister of my sister, Sarah.
01:08Okay.
01:09My first call is we have a car for the whole day.
01:12From your mom?
01:13Yes.
01:14My sister has a mental illness.
01:15Okay.
01:16You don't know what's going on.
01:17Cherie is referring to her 27-year-old sister, Sarah Gilbert.
01:21In a statement to police Cherie claims early that morning, Sarah called her sister and
01:26said that she was hearing voices, and she sounded out of it, like robotic, no emotional
01:32response.
01:33So, mom's car's here.
01:34Mom's car's here.
01:35I don't know where, they're not answering the door.
01:37She's not answering the phone.
01:38I don't know what's going on.
01:40Do you hear anything inside, yelling or nothing?
01:42No.
01:43No sound whatsoever?
01:44No.
01:45My sister has a mental illness, though.
01:47Like, she hears voices?
01:48Yeah.
01:48And she called me this morning.
01:50Are you familiar with her?
01:51I know, sir.
01:52Okay.
01:53Three weeks prior, on July 1st, Officer Bell responded to a call at Rite Aid Pharmacy,
01:58where Sarah was trying to fill prescriptions for her six-year-old son, Hayden.
02:02The pharmacy informed Sarah that the medications were sent to another pharmacy, but she refused
02:06to leave the store without getting them.
02:08After failing to escort her from the store, dispatch officers took Sarah into custody
02:13and transported her to Kingston Hospital for a medical evaluation.
02:17So, she called me this morning, and she's like, oh, I heard voices.
02:20I'm there that knew my other sister that died, or God.
02:23I said, I'm not God.
02:24Like, you know, calm down.
02:26Yeah.
02:27My mom this morning said she's going to go check on her.
02:29We haven't heard from her since 9 this morning, and her car is here.
02:31She's not answering our phone.
02:33She's not answering our texts.
02:35They're not answering the door.
02:36I pound on every single window.
02:38And it's this door right here?
02:39It's this door, and it's that door right here.
02:41What's your mother's name?
02:43Mary.
02:45Mary.
02:46Mary Gilbert.
02:466-8-2-7-4-3.
03:07Attempts to make contact.
03:09Phone appears to be off at this time.
03:12Copy that.
03:13As tensions escalate with every failed attempt to contact Mary, her husband Elroy soon arrives
03:19at the crime scene.
03:20It's what he discovers that will turn the case over its head.
03:24How you doing?
03:25All right.
03:26You got an answer yet?
03:28Do you have keys for the apartment?
03:30No.
03:31Who are you then?
03:33Exactly.
03:33That's my wife.
03:34That's your wife?
03:35Yes.
03:36The wife and your daughter?
03:37Yeah.
03:38Okay.
03:39That window is open.
03:40Is it open?
03:41It's open to right now.
03:43You think I could fit through there?
03:45It's locked.
03:47No, it's not.
03:51No, that's locked.
03:55We just got stoppers on it.
03:58Ugh.
04:01Can you see through there?
04:05You're taller than me.
04:07No, the stoppers are in there.
04:08No.
04:08I don't see anything.
04:21There's a vacuum here.
04:23I don't think I bought it in a vacuum.
04:25This is not the first time authorities have visited this home.
04:29Five months earlier, on February 19th, 2016, officers were called to the house when Sarah's
04:34mother, Mary, reported something deeply disturbing.
04:37Police.
04:38You're looking for Sarah Gilbert.
04:40Sarah.
04:40Sarah?
04:41Hold on.
04:44Sarah?
04:45Will you open the door?
04:46Yeah.
04:46Hello?
04:50Sarah?
04:50Yes.
04:51Why not?
04:52You all right?
04:53I'm right here.
04:53It's cold.
04:54Let me talk to you.
04:55How come we're all wet?
04:58Because I just got off the bath.
04:59Officers will soon uncover a chilling reason behind this bath.
05:03For now, they continue with their questions.
05:06What's in the house for this?
05:07Nobody.
05:08You sure?
05:09Yeah.
05:09Take a quick look around.
05:11The hospital talks here.
05:13Okay?
05:14Did you get an argument with your family?
05:15Yeah.
05:17Over what?
05:17My sister's death.
05:19When did your sister die?
05:20My sister died in 2010.
05:23Sarah is referring to her other sister, Shannon Gilbert, who went missing on May 1st, 2010.
05:29Her remains were discovered 19 months later, on December 13th, 2011, in a marsh near Oak
05:35Beach.
05:36The search for Shannon had led authorities to discover the remains of 10 other missing women,
05:40which invited intense media coverage and put the Gilberts under the spotlight.
05:45Okay.
05:45So, that's what the argument was about?
05:48Yeah.
05:48You're just thinking about it?
05:50Yeah, I believe my mom has something to do with that.
05:53Okay.
05:54She was the 2010 escort services.
05:58Did you get into a physical altercation with them, or are you just yelling?
06:03Um, just yelling.
06:04You didn't push each other?
06:05No.
06:07Okay.
06:07Did you harm any animals?
06:09No.
06:09The officer's seemingly odd question is the reason they're called to the residence, and
06:14he continues to press Sarah for more information.
06:17Secure it everywhere.
06:19Do you have any animals in the apartment?
06:21No.
06:22You've never owned one?
06:23Yeah.
06:23When did you own an animal?
06:26Uh, a dog.
06:27When?
06:28Just recently.
06:29I don't have any more.
06:30Where is it?
06:31I don't know.
06:32I ran away.
06:33The dog ran away?
06:34Yeah.
06:35When?
06:36The other day.
06:37When's the other day?
06:38What was the date?
06:39Probably yesterday, I think it was.
06:40Or today.
06:42Yesterday or today?
06:43Yeah.
06:44That's pretty recent, so.
06:45Yeah.
06:46In the other room, Lieutenant Mike searches for this missing dog, because Sarah's mother
06:51has told authorities about an appalling incident involving a puppy.
06:55Lieutenant Mike doesn't see any signs of the puppy, and immediately Sarah asks to speak
06:59with him about her concerns.
07:01I would say you see.
07:31Why don't you get some shoes and socks on?
07:34I'm going to talk to my mom about it.
07:35She's going to come back.
07:36No, she's at the station, so she's waiting there for you.
07:39No, I want her to come here.
07:41No, she's waiting there for you.
07:42I'm not going over there.
07:43Why?
07:44Because I'm not going over there.
07:45I'm not even dressed.
07:46With their patients wearing thin, officers confront Sarah with the reason behind their
07:51visit.
07:52Where's the dog?
07:53The dog?
07:54Yeah, what happened to the dog?
07:56The dog ran away.
07:57That's not what I heard.
07:59So you're going to come with us to the station.
08:00You're going to talk to your mom at the police station.
08:01Where's your shoes?
08:03Just as they're about to leave the house, officers make a deplorable discovery.
08:08What is that?
08:09The dog.
08:11The dog's in the back?
08:12The dog's in the way.
08:12No, I don't.
08:13The dog looks like it's dead.
08:17So you lied to me?
08:18Yeah, it's you.
08:20Why did you lie to me?
08:21Because I'm evil.
08:22You're evil?
08:23Why are you evil?
08:25Did you say a bad moment?
08:27You're not evil.
08:27You said evil moment?
08:28I don't believe that you're evil.
08:30I believe that if you're angry and you're scared or you're not as a police for you, but
08:33what happened?
08:36You know what happened.
08:37You know what the right did.
08:39What happened to the dog?
08:40You know what the right did.
08:41You know what we did?
08:42Yeah, we right did.
08:44What did we do?
08:45She wrote evil.
08:46And it wasn't her fault.
08:48It wasn't your fault.
08:49I'm asking what happened to the dog.
08:50I'm sorry.
08:51It wasn't your fault.
08:52What happened to the dog?
08:54Sarah, what happened to the dog?
08:56I killed it.
08:57How?
08:57I drowned it.
08:59Why?
09:00Because I had to.
09:02So is that why you're wet?
09:04Yeah.
09:04Yes.
09:05All right.
09:05Put the sugar right out.
09:06We're going to go to the station.
09:08As officers escort Sarah to the patrol car, dispatch calls in a request from the police
09:13station.
09:15Reece, I have a grandmother, the father, and the juvenile here.
09:20Is it okay if the father takes the child with him right now?
09:24Yes, that's fine.
09:25Yeah, that's fine.
09:26I'll take it.
09:28Do you have a camera in the car?
09:29Yeah.
09:29Is that the patrol people?
09:30Yeah, it's in my back.
09:34Sarah has a six-year-old son, Hayden, with her boyfriend, Manny.
09:40Soon, Manny will share distressing details about Sarah's son and the puppy.
09:44For now, Lieutenant Mike puts Sarah in the patrol car while officers photograph the evidence.
09:52Serious issues.
09:53Take pictures anyway.
09:55I don't know what they're going to do with this.
09:57I don't know if they're going to treat us as a homicide or anything, but this is terrible.
10:07After photographing the dead puppy inside the trash bag, officers go to the bathroom where
10:12Sarah drowned the dog earlier that morning and are about to make yet another sickening
10:17observation.
10:18Is there anything in the television?
10:22Yeah, it looks like it's a regurgitation from the dog.
10:26That's disgusting.
10:27As Lieutenant Mike drives Sarah to the police station, she makes more disconcerting comments
10:35that offer some insight into the gruesome attack on the dog.
10:39While Sarah provides no solid explanation, her boyfriend, Manny, shares more details in an interview almost a year after the incident.
11:00The opinions expressed here solely belong to Manny, and we have not been able to verify them.
11:05Was that your dog that you brought?
11:07I brought the dog for my son.
11:10But what my son told me is, when he came home, the dog pissed in the kennel.
11:15The little kennel boy.
11:16She said, like, Manny, can I need the dog to back?
11:18She went over there, she went to the bathtub up, took the dog in, and just drove the dog.
11:22And my son said, when she was walking away, like, the dog was still a little bit like, you know what I'm saying?
11:26She ended up walking back in the end and just ended up killing her.
11:29So, she sees the dog is still reading and goes back to finish him off.
11:36This is what my son told me.
11:38During her arraignment a week later on February 28th, 2016, Sarah stated,
11:44he wasn't in the bathroom with me when I did it.
11:46While we may never have a definitive answer on what actually happened in the bathroom,
11:50it's clear that the animal suffered a torturous end.
11:54At the station, Sarah is greeted by her mother, Mary, who reported this case.
11:59What, what?
11:59She feels that, that you don't love her, I don't know why that is.
12:07I want to love you.
12:08I know, I'm loving your thoughts.
12:11I love you, can I have a hug?
12:13I love you, Sarah.
12:15I'll always love you.
12:18I'll always love you.
12:19And I'm going to be here for you.
12:23Even if...
12:24Honey, it's okay.
12:27I love you.
12:27Sometimes, Mom's got to do mean things to show her love and nice things to love.
12:37Right now, this is not a good time, but it's okay.
12:42I understand.
12:44You need a nice thing.
12:45I'm really bad.
12:46I love you.
12:47I love you with all my heart.
12:50And I'm always going to be there for you.
12:53Always, forever.
12:55You know that?
12:55I am, Mom.
12:56You know that?
12:57I am, Mom.
12:58You know what?
12:59You're going to be here forever.
13:02Before leaving, Mary makes a comment to her daughter that will have chilling ramifications five months later.
13:08Thank you so much.
13:09All right.
13:09And remember, nothing you can ever do will ever take my number away from you.
13:16Okay?
13:18All right.
13:19For intentionally drowning her son's dog, Sarah was charged with aggravated cruelty, unlawful possession of a substance, endangering the welfare of a child, and for violating the mental health law.
13:30A month later, on March 9, 2016, Sarah was ordered to the Mid-Hudson Forensic Psychiatric Center for a 35-day evaluation.
13:38A month after, she was deemed fit to stand trial and remitted to the Ulster County Jail, where she attempted to get her mother to post the $10,000 bond in late April.
13:48So that's like a month and a half.
13:50Right.
13:51Yeah, that I could be out free as a bird, smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, doing what I want to do.
13:56Their conversation quickly turns sour when Mary realizes that Sarah gave her the wrong information about the bond payment.
14:03Other bail bondsmen.
14:04Not all of them need property, Mom.
14:06The one in Kingston, yes, is one in Poughkeepsie.
14:09There's other ones, Mom.
14:11Oh, really?
14:12When are you supposed to find time to do that?
14:14Then I've got to go pick up the girl for half the day.
14:17I've got to go to her.
14:17Sorry.
14:18Give June new paper.
14:19I've got to go and do this.
14:21I've got to do that.
14:22All right, Mom, you know what?
14:23I didn't put you in there.
14:25Eventually, Mary decides to get her daughter out of jail by posting her bond two months after the incident on April 22, 2016.
14:32Now, three months later, officers are at the Gilbert residence again, this time looking for Mary.
14:39Oh, so stop.
14:47Hello?
14:48Police?
14:49As Officer Gonzalez is doing everything she can to get a glimpse of someone inside, a horrific discovery is made on the other side of the house.
15:01Seriously?
15:03No.
15:03No.
15:03Wow, my God.
15:17What happened?
15:17Oh, my God.
15:18What happened?
15:20Oh, God.
15:21What happened?
15:23What happened?
15:24What happened?
15:25Oh, f***.
15:26Albert, I can't look what happened.
15:28Eight minutes in there, bloody.
15:30Okay, back up.
15:31Oh, my God.
15:32Back up.
15:32In a later statement, Elroy describes what he saw through the open window.
15:37I saw Mary lying there covered in blood.
15:40I think she was face down on her belly.
15:42Her head was near the window.
15:44It was hard to tell because it was dark.
15:46No.
15:48Oh, my God.
15:52All right, just stay back, please.
15:54Stay back.
15:54I need you to get his name.
16:01After discovering Mary's body lying on the floor of the living room, officers scramble
16:07to secure the scene and get information from the family.
16:10However, that proves to be a challenge given this awful revelation.
16:13Is there somebody that can get the kids?
16:18Nobody can take them.
16:21It's just me and Elroy.
16:22We don't have any family.
16:24Okay.
16:25That's...
16:25Oh.
16:28Oh, my God.
16:29Oh.
16:33All right, sir.
16:34Sir.
16:36Sir, I understand.
16:39Okay?
16:39Listen to me.
16:40Okay?
16:40I'm going to need your information.
16:43Ma'am.
16:44I'm sorry.
16:45I'm so sorry.
16:46Listen, I understand, but you have your kids with you, so you're going to need to stay
16:50calm for them.
16:51Okay?
16:52Okay, listen.
16:53Listen.
16:54It's okay.
16:55It's okay, buddy.
16:56Sit down.
16:57Okay?
16:57Sit down.
16:58Here.
16:58Sit down.
16:59Come on.
16:59Sit here.
17:00Just stay right here.
17:01Stay right here, okay?
17:02Okay?
17:02As Officer Gonzalez tries to calm everyone down, Officer Bell calls his supervisor to relay
17:12the harrowing incident.
17:14Hey, Elte.
17:16I'm going to need you to come on in.
17:19We got a call for a check to welfare over at Sarah Gilbert's place.
17:22Her mother's car is here.
17:24Couldn't make contact.
17:25Uh, Sarah's father pried open the door and we have a body inside with, uh, blood around
17:30it.
17:34Yeah, we haven't got inside.
17:35Uh, do I have permission to kick the door in?
17:40No.
17:40He opened the window to the bedroom and he peeked in and saw I looked inside and there's
17:44a body on the ground.
17:45All right.
17:47All right.
17:48You want me to call, uh, EMS?
17:51682?
17:52Got it.
17:53I need you to dispatch EMS and my location.
17:59Officer Bell returns to the door he was pounding against moments ago, but this time he's not
18:04going to knock.
18:05Still, nothing can prepare officers for what they will find inside.
18:15Sarah?
18:15Yeah?
18:16I'm going to be right.
18:17Turn around.
18:19What happened?
18:20I don't know.
18:23Sarah, stop.
18:24Come here.
18:25No, I just need water.
18:26Come here now.
18:27I just need water for myself.
18:29I don't, just put the cigarette out.
18:31Turn around.
18:31All right.
18:38You can sit down on the web page.
18:40I don't want them to see me like this.
18:41Turn around.
18:42Can I put shoes on this?
18:43No, turn around.
18:44Turn around.
18:45Put the cigarette out.
18:45Turn around.
18:46Put the cigarette out.
18:48You're under arrest.
18:51You're being detained right now.
18:53You understand?
18:53Yeah.
18:54While Sarah may have admitted to killing her mother, this is only the beginning of a long
18:59series of disconcerting reactions before investigators can uncover the shocking motive behind this
19:04spine-chilling act.
19:07Hold on.
19:08Hold on.
19:08What do you have on you?
19:09Nothing.
19:11I'm going to take my family away before you form a house, please.
19:14I want my family.
19:14Have them back up.
19:15Okay.
19:16Officer Gonzalez rushes outside to guide the family back to a safe distance, but none of
19:21them have yet seen what Elroy saw in the front window.
19:25Okay.
19:26We're bringing her out.
19:27I'm going to have to ask you to step up.
19:29I don't, I haven't been able to look into the room.
19:34It's all out of the corner right now.
19:36We're taking a walk.
19:37But who are you bringing out?
19:39My wife?
19:40No.
19:40Or Sarah?
19:41Yes.
19:41Oh, she's in there?
19:43Yes.
19:43Wow.
19:45Meanwhile, back inside the house, Officer Bell reads Sarah her Miranda rights, and she
19:50makes another baffling statement.
19:53Who's that, our lawyer?
19:54She's not dead, though.
19:55She's not?
19:56She's not dead.
19:57She's still alive.
19:59All right.
20:00Stay right here.
20:01Stop.
20:02You have nothing on you, right?
20:03No.
20:04What happened?
20:05I was hearing voices.
20:07You're hearing voices?
20:08And what happened?
20:08And I attacked my mother.
20:10All right.
20:10Hey.
20:11Okay.
20:12Okay.
20:12Um, I need you to sit on her right here.
20:16I got to check her mother.
20:18Okay?
20:18Okay.
20:20Ma'am?
20:46Ma'am?
20:47Ma'am?
20:48Ma'am?
20:48Ma'am?
20:49Ma'am?
20:50Ma'am?
20:50She's cold.
20:566-8-2?
20:58Got it.
21:00We're going to have one in custody and Miranda right at this time.
21:07You can copy her at 1401.
21:10She's alive still, right?
21:146-8-2?
21:17Got it.
21:18What's the status on the U.M.S.?
21:20It just got dissatisfied five seconds ago.
21:25Despite Sarah's claim that her mother is still alive, Officer Bell has his doubts after
21:30finding Mary's body cold to the touch.
21:32In moments, Lieutenant Mike arrives to survey the situation.
21:36But as they stand in the kitchen, Officer Bell is about to confirm everyone's sinking
21:40suspicions.
21:41Okay.
21:42Uh, yeah.
21:44Uh, yeah.
21:44This ain't good.
21:464-50.
21:494-50.
21:504-50.
21:50You okay?
21:52She's dead.
21:54She's dead?
21:54Yeah.
21:55The bird is on me and I'll be saving.
21:58Okay, you're responding on the scene.
21:591,500 of ours.
22:00While officers might be overwhelmed by the sheer brutality of the situation,
22:24it's nothing compared to what the medical examiners will reveal in the autopsy later.
22:29As Officer Gonzalez struggles to make sense,
22:59of Sarah's perplexing statements, she presses her for more information.
23:03You don't hear it?
23:06I hear the beeping of the fire.
23:09It's itself.
23:10It's itself?
23:11Yeah.
23:12Maybe I'm not hearing closely, but I don't hear what you hear.
23:18No.
23:19Does it just continue?
23:20No.
23:21It comes and goes.
23:22It's not warm.
23:23It's embarrassing, so.
23:24It's been doing that all day?
23:26Yeah.
23:27Yeah.
23:28Yeah.
23:29Yeah.
23:30Did you say anything back?
23:31No.
23:32No?
23:33I ignore it.
23:34It follows me, though.
23:35Even when you're outside?
23:36No.
23:37No.
23:38That's why I'm going to go outside.
23:39I don't want to tell them in their voice.
23:40A short while later, as officers escort Sarah outside, her family is waiting to confront her.
23:55Yeah, that's fine.
23:56All right, bye.
23:57Okay, thank you.
23:58Just act a minute of time that she's leaving.
23:59All right.
24:00Dad, what the f*** did you do?
24:01No.
24:02Go ahead.
24:03You're good?
24:04You're good?
24:05You're good?
24:06I'm here.
24:07This is Gilbert and, uh, Alshur Gonzalez.
24:08I'm being brought back to the PD via 43.
24:09I'm sorry.
24:10I'm sorry.
24:11I'm sorry.
24:12I'm sorry.
24:13I'm sorry.
24:14I'm sorry.
24:15I'm sorry.
24:16I'm sorry.
24:17I'm sorry.
24:18I'm sorry.
24:19I'm sorry.
24:20I'm sorry.
24:21I'm sorry.
24:22I'm sorry.
24:23I'm sorry.
24:24I'm sorry.
24:25I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
24:26I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
24:27I'm sorry.
24:28I'm sorry, I'm sorry...
24:29I am sorry.
24:30I'm sorry.
24:31I'm sorry.
24:32Officer Gonzalez makes the 2 minute drive to the police station without incident, but
24:36as they walk into the building, Sarah has a request.
24:38Sarah has a request.
24:40I'm gonna get you some water on our way down, okay?
24:46Or at least get somebody to bring you some water.
24:49Still unfazed by what she's done to her mother and her family, Sarah continues to obsess
25:11over mundane details.
25:41Officer Gonzalez identifies more scratch and struggle marks on Sarah's body,
26:10but investigators will not know the complete series of events until detectives have a chance
26:15to speak with Sarah later. As Sarah proceeds to use the restroom, Officer Gonzalez is about to
26:21make a blunder.
26:22I'm sorry.
26:23Can she use the restroom if she can? Just thought of washing her hands or anything like that?
26:35Okay.
26:35If need be.
26:37Do you need to use the restroom or anything?
26:39Yeah, wait. No.
26:40A little bit later. A little bit later.
26:42Can we get some water out of the sink?
26:45Let me just make sure.
26:46Having realized that they may have lost critical DNA evidence, Officer Gonzalez quickly informs the
26:53sergeant.
26:54Sergeant?
26:55Yeah.
26:56I had to use the bathroom before.
27:04Oh, not bad.
27:07Okay.
27:09It was very quick.
27:11Yeah, it's dope.
27:12When Officer Gonzalez lets Sarah use the restroom again, she keeps a closer eye on her. This
27:32time, her attention to detail pays off when she notices something revolting.
27:36Um, I mean, I don't really think you need that, do you?
28:01We'll, we'll let, um, my supervisor know, okay?
28:05Um, all right, uh, this is 20-20.
28:12This is 20-20, all right, I think it's 20-20, all right, this is, uh, this guy's, uh, 20-20.
28:17This is all down, completely.
28:20Super period?
28:21No.
28:22Did you ask her?
28:23No.
28:25Where is she?
28:26Before that she was on top of her, stabbing her.
28:31So, I don't know.
28:34I'm feeling so sorry.
28:35Did I have clothes on?
28:36While officers inside the police station continue to wait for the detectives, Sarah grows impatient.
28:42And how about her?
28:44Why?
28:45You were safe with me.
28:46No, I don't feel safe here.
28:48Something bad's gonna happen to me.
28:53What do you feel is gonna happen to you?
28:55I don't know.
28:57We won't let anything happen to you.
28:59We won't let anything happen to you, okay?
29:03You could just shoot me.
29:05No.
29:06I'm not gonna do that.
29:08Are you gonna put your hands on me?
29:09No.
29:11You're, you're fine sitting right there.
29:14You guys are gonna jump me.
29:15You guys are all over here and jump me right now.
29:19You're gonna beat me to death.
29:20Finally, as the interrogation begins, Detective Jacobs reads Sarah her rights and cuts straight
29:26to the chase.
29:28Uh, do you know why you're here?
29:29I murdered my mother.
29:30Excuse me?
29:31I murdered my mother.
29:32You murdered your mother.
29:33Okay.
29:34What exactly did you do to your mother?
29:36I killed her.
29:37How?
29:38I stabbed her.
29:39Okay.
29:39While Sarah may have admitted to the killing several times by now, it's her twisted motive
29:44that's going to leave the detective reeling from shock.
29:47Do you remember how many times you stabbed your mother?
29:49No.
29:50You don't remember?
29:51A lot.
29:52A lot?
29:52What possessed you to get into an altercation with your mother?
29:55Were you guys arguing?
29:56No, we weren't arguing.
29:58You were just talking?
29:58I thought it was something that I had to do.
30:01Okay.
30:02So what did you use?
30:03A knife and a, um, fire extinguisher.
30:06In an autopsy report later, the medical examiner would state that Sarah stabbed her mother
30:11227 times, bludgeoned her with a fire extinguisher,
30:15and sprayed the foam into her mouth.
30:18At one point during the assault, Sarah took a cigarette break before resuming her attack.
30:23While Sarah might even admit to this,
30:25the circumstances that led her to commit this vicious act are yet to be uncovered.
30:29Where did you get the knife from?
30:31Um, my kitchen.
30:33Okay.
30:33Do you remember what kind of knife it was?
30:35It was like a little steak, but it was really, really big at the same time.
30:38How long would you say it was?
30:39It was probably like this one.
30:41Okay.
30:41So was it a steak knife?
30:42Or was it a knife you used to like, like a carving knife?
30:45A carving knife.
30:45Maybe.
30:46It was a carving knife?
30:47So you got up off the couch and went to the kitchen and then went back into the front
30:50room?
30:51No, I already had it all prepared.
30:54So you knew what you were going to do before your mother got there?
30:56Yeah.
30:57Okay.
30:58Sarah's statement helps Detective Jacobs establish that this was a premeditated crime,
31:03but he still needs to find out why.
31:05I mean, did you have second thoughts while you were laying in bed about what you did?
31:09Like, you wish you could take it back?
31:10Of course.
31:11That's my mother.
31:12Okay.
31:13That's like my son's grandpa, my son's grandpa, you know?
31:16And I don't even know where my son is right now.
31:18I don't even know if they put him in foster care.
31:20Hayden is temporarily staying with Sarah's half-sister.
31:24An officer is immediately sent out to check on the child.
31:27We're just coming over to make sure he was okay and everything.
31:30What's your name?
31:31Hayden.
31:32Hayden?
31:35Hayden Gilbert?
31:36No, Hayden.
31:39All right.
31:43Bye.
31:45All right.
31:47I'm so sorry for your loss, okay?
31:50Take care, little buddy.
31:51Stay strong, all right?
31:57I almost get high.
32:09After a check that seems to have rattled the visiting officer,
32:12authorities get confirmation on Hayden's well-being.
32:15Back in the interrogation room,
32:17detectives start piecing the chain of events together,
32:20but Sarah's bizarre assertions make the task almost impossible.
32:25So, before your mother got to your house,
32:27you figured that you put the knife,
32:30you put the fire extinguisher in the front room,
32:32and you figured that by killing her,
32:33it would stop all the noises and all the chaos that's going on in your life.
32:36Yeah, I thought she was coughing it.
32:37Okay.
32:39Okay.
32:39But I don't think that anymore.
32:41Okay.
32:42Did your mother say anything to you while you were...
32:44Eminem was doing it.
32:45Right.
32:45Because when I was younger,
32:47there was an MTV special.
32:49It had Jay-Z and Eminem,
32:53and they told me,
32:55like, they were like,
32:56oh, we're in a sensitive speech,
32:57da-da-da-da.
32:58There's going to be one person in the world that writes it,
33:00and it's going to be a poem with a poem.
33:03Then that was me.
33:04And my sister Shannon went to the city,
33:07to, what you would call it,
33:09like a producer.
33:11Right.
33:11And we would talk back on the floor,
33:13like on the phone,
33:14and we would sing songs together
33:16that became celebrity songs.
33:18Okay.
33:20If you understood,
33:21like, I want songs from them,
33:23and my celebrities and stuff like that.
33:26Okay.
33:27I didn't want to, like,
33:29I don't know how I'm trapped like this.
33:30Like, my son, like,
33:33I don't know how I'm a puppy,
33:34like, all this stuff,
33:36like, all this bad stuff,
33:37because, like, I hear voices,
33:38and I see things,
33:39and I know it's real,
33:41it's reality.
33:42There's somebody here
33:42that's doing this on purpose.
33:44Okay.
33:45And I believe it might be Eminem.
33:46I don't know,
33:46because he wrote a song,
33:47I thought I wanted to get you on a cell phone,
33:49where he says my name,
33:50Sarah Silver.
33:51Later, Sarah will explain
33:53that the song she's talking about
33:55is That's All She Wrote,
33:56released in 2010
33:58and performed by T.I. and Eminem.
34:00While Eminem mentions
34:01someone named Sarah in the lyrics,
34:03it's clearly not her
34:05that he's referring to.
34:06Despite this,
34:07Sarah desperately tries
34:08to get the detectives
34:09to understand her point of view.
34:12That's why,
34:12I just wanted you to be truthful
34:13and tell us exactly what happened
34:15and make us understand
34:16why it happened.
34:17The reason why it happened
34:19is because of music.
34:22Because of music.
34:22It's all about the music.
34:23Something in the music
34:24is telling you to...
34:25It's all about the music,
34:26yes it is.
34:26I'm not saying no,
34:28I'm saying,
34:28but you're saying
34:28it's something in the music
34:30that's telling you
34:30to do these things?
34:31No, I'm saying that
34:32it's all about the music.
34:33Like, every time I listen to music,
34:36the voice stops.
34:37It's like a click.
34:38Like, I just paused it.
34:41Because I want you to listen
34:42to that song,
34:43she's all she wrote.
34:45Or that's all she wrote.
34:47And by Eminem.
34:48Right.
34:49And it says my name,
34:50Sarah Gilbert,
34:51all the...
34:52Okay.
34:52A parting glimpse
34:54into Sarah's troubled mind
34:55comes from her personal diary,
34:57where she writes,
34:58Now it's my turn to play.
35:00At the stroke of midnight,
35:01all black eyes will die,
35:03no matter what beats
35:04they hide inside.
35:06Look what I done
35:06just to have fun.
35:07Now there goes
35:08our dirty laundry.
35:09Husband and wife
35:10back again to reunite.
35:12May you enjoy your time in hell
35:13until we reunite
35:15in another life.
35:16On December 3rd, 2021,
35:18five years after the incident,
35:20officers will find
35:21another harrowing connection
35:23between the dog's killing
35:24and Sarah's obsession
35:25with music.
35:27Sarah reportedly drowned
35:28the puppy in front of her son,
35:30based upon the belief
35:31that the puppy
35:32was the rapper Eminem
35:33and wanted to hurt her.
35:34There was also evidence
35:35that after Sarah drowned
35:37the puppy,
35:38she purchased a knife,
35:39drove her son to the woods,
35:41showed him the knife,
35:41and said,
35:42Don't tell anybody
35:43what mommy did.
35:44Despite Sarah's insistence
35:46on musical theories,
35:47it's clear to authorities
35:49that she can rationalize
35:50her brutal actions
35:51by blaming anyone
35:52in her periphery of psychosis.
35:54In August of 2017,
35:56Sarah was convicted
35:57of second-degree murder
35:58and sentenced to 25 years to life
36:01in the New York State Department
36:03of Correctional Services.
