00:00Are online claims about the Pandemic Treaty true?
00:07The Pandemic Treaty, that is the name of the landmark deal which has just been agreed upon
00:12by more than 190 members of the World Health Organization.
00:16In November 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic,
00:19WHO members proposed drawing up a plan of action for future pandemics.
00:24The treaty won't be legally binding until it is officially adopted,
00:27which is expected to happen next month.
00:30However, a string of false and misleading online claims
00:33have been skewing the discussion around the agreement.
00:36This far-right Austrian TV channel claimed the treaty would lead to mandatory vaccinations,
00:41testing regimes and isolation requirements.
00:44Meanwhile, this ultra-conservative group alleges the treaty would lead
00:47to unelected officials controlling health policies.
00:50So, what do experts make of these statements?
00:53The current wording of the Pandemic Agreement,
00:56which is very much based on voluntary cooperation
00:59between member states and with the WHO.
01:02There has also been confusion regarding whether richer countries
01:05will be obliged to provide poorer countries with vaccines.
01:09A potential obligation to donate or to give away vaccines,
01:14this is personally not agreed upon yet.
01:18Secondly, it is not clear to what extent a percentage of vaccines
01:24or other medical products, not just vaccines,
01:26would have to be provided to the WHO.
01:29And third, whether that would be free of charge
01:34or whether that would be on a preferential price
01:37or whether that would be still negotiated in the future,
01:40this is still not clear.
01:41So, no, many of the online claims about the Pandemic Agreement are not true.
01:46While many remain critical of putting resources into Pandemic Management,
01:50for healthcare experts, a future pandemic will likely be a matter of when and not if.
