00:00rude guest hotline right now is where we find our guy matt miller nfl draft scout on social he is one
00:08of the top draft analysts in the country you see him applying his trade on espn where he is one of
00:14their draft analysts and insiders this time of year matt we appreciate you thank you for a few
00:18minutes how are you i'm doing well good to hear from you guys again absolutely good bud ton we
00:23want to get into with you so let's just start with this shador sanders i don't ever remember
00:28like a face of a draft type player with this much undulation as to what people are hearing and where
00:35he's going solve the riddle for us what do you think round one holds for him google undulation
00:42first my goodness this is a big word uh we're competing for our scrabble win today okay well
00:50you're you're gonna get it with that one uh i think shador is the most what fascinating
00:55polarizing player in the class and it's interesting because for the past two years he's been
01:02almost felt like the face of college football right i mean the amount of covers that they got
01:07some of it absolutely deserved some of it maybe not as much but he's he's very much been in the
01:12spotlight now we get 10 days before the draft and i talk to teams and i've been asking people just
01:18straight up people who scout for teams make decisions for teams you have a first round grade
01:23i can't find a team that does now that doesn't mean he won't go in the first round and it doesn't
01:29mean he won't go in the top 10 but in terms of a true first round grade and teams usually have about
01:3415 of those uh so obviously half the first round are people with second round grades is the math that
01:40we could do on that but i don't get the sense around the league that there's a ton of love for him a
01:46kind of conviction on him so i think his range is anywhere from three to the giants which i doubt
01:52like i'm not hearing anyone think the giants are going to take him at three nine to the saints they
01:58didn't like him two weeks ago i don't know that derrick car shoulder injury is going to change the
02:01calculus that much then you get to no man's land does a team like miami or seattle take a chance on
02:08because they're you know not really set long term a quarterback or do we actually see him fall to
02:13pittsburgh at 21 there are a few guys met that i feel like there's a big variance on when it comes
02:18to to the draft and there's a number of reasons for it but i think there's a couple guys i'm sort
02:21of calling it my shamar stewart corollary where the off the charts athleticism and measurables and
02:27testables just like our jaw dropping and then you go well you had a second a half more than i did uh
02:32this past year in texas and i'm like how's that possible i think luther burton's another guy
02:35that will kind of fit that example um in missouri after kind of a down year how are you viewing these
02:41guys and maybe think of some others with these degrees of variance i know part of that is it's
02:45silly season everybody's got an agenda whether it's a team that wants them to fall or or something
02:49like that but just seems odd to me this year your thoughts it does seem and i think some of that is
02:55the philosophies around the league are changing we can look at philly and how they draft baltimore
03:00how they draft and they're good every year we can look at how the rams have started drafting and how
03:03well they've been able to turn that thing around as now these points of saying okay well maybe production
03:09matters more than potential even go back to 2022 trevon walker going first overall aden hudson
03:16going second overall greats went over production in that point and it like both are good players
03:22that aden hudson was probably the best defensive end of football last year before he got hurt so
03:25i do think there's this idea now of and i have a sticky note on my monitor that i sit at and it says
03:31draft good football players because that's like me reminding myself of chamar stewart might score a 10
03:36out of 10 on the ras you know score sheet but he had one and a half sacks in each of the last three
03:42seasons you can point to the scheme you can put whatever you want but the fact that you had one
03:47and a half sacks in each of the last three seasons it's just i guess some point how good you are on
03:53saturdays has to matter and i've fallen into the trap of it too like falling in love with traits on guys
03:58i was the biggest justin fields fan in the world because of the traits and we've seen what happened
04:04with anthony richardson because of the traits and it's it is a slippery slope so traits are great
04:10athleticism is obviously important big people tend to be up little people but that athleticism has to
04:17create production otherwise i don't know that it matters our guest matt miller vspn nfl draft scout
04:24joining us on grant and danny to break down what's going to happen in round one i want to get back to
04:30the edges because washington's very likely taking one if they stay at 29 but to round out the
04:34quarterback conversation how many do you think go in the first round i think two right now that's all
04:41i can find room for and i know like the hot names jackson dark tyler shuck jalen millro i think it's
04:48going to be much more likely than those those guys go 33 34 37 40 i think those are early round two
04:57picks the teams are doing their diligence on maybe i'm getting bad information maybe i'm reading the
05:02room wrong i think it would take a team basically saying hey we're going to come up into the late
05:08first round to get a fifth year option for those guys to actually all go in the first round so jalen
05:13millrose invited to the draft and my my hat that i'm now putting on that's made of tinfoil is they want
05:19some good content for maybe the first round drama and then potentially have someone on camera for the
05:24second round try to put that over otherwise if they just invited him on normal means mad that it
05:30means he's going to the first round people think right i that's been driving me crazy all week
05:34honestly and maybe i'm just becoming an old man can we remember that matt corral and malik willis were
05:40also invited to the draft they didn't go in the first round they went in the third round and so it's
05:44this i i mean it would be fascinating to me uh i'm not able to gamble on sports because of my job it
05:50would be fascinating to me if we could go back two weeks and look at the odds on jalen millrose
05:55over under where he's going to be drafted and where it is today i bet you it shot up a full round
06:00because he got invited to the draft that's it so again maybe this is just me you know having done
06:07this for too long and i'm jaded i don't know that i'm going to read that much into that you know of oh
06:12my gosh he's invited to the draft the nfl's pr arm knows who the first 32 picks are going to be
06:18there's some intrigue around jalen millrose absolutely if he goes in the first round
06:22i'm i'm confident saying it will be it depends i mean if he goes somewhere and he has to play
06:27right away it's going to be a disaster people go somewhere where he can sit for a year or two
06:31i'm going to feel differently about it but uh he is he's the biggest project in this entire draft
06:36all right so let's talk edges because that is washington's biggest need they hold the 29th pick if
06:41they don't trade back i guess before we even get into the defensive ends what's your outlook for
06:46washington there and the possibility of a trade back seems like a good spot to do it with teams
06:51wanting to come up to pick up a fifth year option maybe at the end of the first round
06:55absolutely could be you know just with those guys we just talked about you could you could be in good
07:00shape to do that i think what will be interesting to see is how wiped out the board is at defensive
07:05end especially because you have so many teams in the middle of the first round with a clear-cut
07:10edge atlanta arizona cincinnati and they pick back to back to back you have the chargers at 22
07:16they could definitely take an edge rusher the ravens at 27 the lions at 28 so there's like six
07:21teams between picks 15 and we're watching it at 29 that could take edge rushers so it it is will be
07:28like if you want to sit there's a fan on thursday night print out my rankings if you want and cross
07:33off those edge rushers because we can all want an edge to be there at 29 there might not be because
07:39that run could absolutely happen so let's do it this way and i know this is an impossible silly task
07:46but just for the sake of the conversation i'm gonna name an edge you tell me the percentage chance
07:51that you think they're still there at 29 does that make sense yeah no this is fun yeah uh abdul carter
07:57zero all right right so we'll just start there mike green marshall yeah mike green marshall
08:03five percent oh so damn it that's my guy so he's a lot of rain on this little plate i'm having
08:09uh donovan ezaraku from boston college oh it's 20 oh wow so he's even okay james pierce i think so
08:18um 95 oh wow okay nick scorton from texas a&m we're doing percent chances there right yeah
08:28a hundred percent all right shamar stewart um 20 percent michael williams i would say 20 percent
08:40all right uh landon jackson a hundred percent all right so basically you've got it as like a jackson
08:48scorton pierce debate if they stick and pick which if that is the case and green is gone and ezaraku's
08:57gone and uh stewart's gone then it seems like trading back actually makes a lot of sense i mean
09:02you would know better than me but are any of those guys like can't pass up players at 29
09:07i don't think so uh i don't uh with james pierce there's a lot of question marks about
09:13you know the the person that you're getting basically you know what is he wired like how
09:17mature is he um you know i've talked to people in the media who have you know not had great experiences
09:24i've talked to people from nfl teams who've heard not great things so he is he's polarizing
09:29if you feel comfortable with him in your locker room and with your setup and in your city he could
09:35be great and we we saw greatness from him at tennessee incredibly productive he's fast he would
09:41he would be good in a stand-up rusher role it's just it is a bit of a risk and i think that's where
09:46i get 29 it might be the risk you're willing to take but this seems like a front office that has
09:53been more conservative rather than not matt miller with us here on grant and danny so okay
09:58this this is gonna be a poorly worded question see if you can stay with my my bizarre wording and
10:02logic if the maximum number of defensive ends go nobody slips right nobody slips through the cracks
10:09to 29 or even early into the second round and everything else kind of goes chalky is there a
10:14position then potentially of great value like where you go oh you know what normally the third best
10:19cornerback is off the board at 20 but now because of the math the third best quarterback is there at
10:2429 that's that's kind of worth washington standing there and sticking does that make sense yeah i think
10:29wide receiver might be that spot because there's not a consensus after travis hunter we got to take
10:34him out of the conversation right but there's not a consensus some teams like matthew golden some teams
10:39like ted a row mcmillan i'm still a big luther burden fan ameka abuka is out there it's just like a really
10:45really solid player who does everything well uh just maybe not as fast or as big as some of the
10:50other guys so receiver really could be i i think there's a scenario where matthew golden's off the
10:56board but we could be looking at ted mcmillan luther burden ameka abuka all available at 29 when any of
11:02those guys fit washington in your mind i think they all could yeah i mean luther burden is basically what
11:09you hope you know it's young debo samuel but i think he has he's faster so he would he would
11:14absolutely fit that mold and i don't know what you're getting from debo this year you know he's
11:20getting older what kind of shape he's going to be in but burden would fit that role i think abuka
11:24opposite terry would be fascinating because he's such a good short to intermediate route runner he's
11:30very physical he doesn't drop the ball like he would just do your dirty work on the underneath stuff
11:35and then ted mcmillan you know he's 6'4 220 so he's going to give you you know some 50 50 stuff i think
11:41he's a lot better short area quickness than he is long speed like he has some pretty good ability
11:47to make people miss on you know wide receiver screens little dump offs and stuff like that
11:52what gets all the attention is his deep ball ability and what he does at you know 50 50 balls but
11:57obviously you know terry's such a great route runner deep i think mcmillan could again kind of do some of
12:03the underneath dirty work because of his size what corners do you expect to be gone when washington
12:09picks at 29 and who has a good chance to be there if they want to go that route yeah i think john
12:14a baron will be gone from texas i think will johnson from michigan will be gone despite the fact that he
12:19didn't have a good pre-draft process his tape's just too good the interesting ones would be trey
12:24amos from ole miss and max harrison from kentucky and they're very different guys amos is 6'1 200 pounds
12:30he lives at the line of scrimmage harrison's you know 5'10 180 pounds he's a really good slot corner and
12:37his foot speed and quickness are are crazy crazy good his senior bowl combine tape are fantastic in
12:43that area so you could get a corner um you're you're kind of almost i think those two are the
12:48realistic ones with round one grades who could be there and they're again they're very different i
12:52would think harrison would be almost a little bit redundant with mikey sanger still there um but if you
12:59wanted to i think you can find a way to get the buck on the field if that's the situation you're in
13:03do you think travis hunter plays more corner receiver what's he major in i think he majors
13:09the receiver and i i think that's body type i think it's personality i think it's also that
13:15receivers make 40 million dollars a year now um i would that would be the easiest decision in the
13:20world for me and i i posted this on twitter the other day if he wants to play both that's great
13:24someone needs to remind him that he needs to play one more snap a game at receiver because when it's time
13:29for him to get paid he wants paid as a receiver don't give the nfl a chance to say oh no you're
13:34actually a corner we're going to pay you 10 million dollars a year less make them pay you as a wide
13:39receiver that actually you should be an agent on the side uh give me give me a guy that you like
13:46better than the consensus and give me someone that you're lower on than the consensus yeah it's weird
13:51as long as i've been doing this i feel like this is the year where i have a lot of those like
13:55outlier type players i love kelvin banks from texas i think he's a top 10 player in this class
14:00i mentioned luther burden he's my number 13 overall player in this class so i like both those guys and
14:05sometimes i i read things from my counterparts or i'm on tv with the guys i work with and i hear
14:10them say things and i'm like did i did i blank out on last year's college football season or something
14:15and i did it was their tape out there that i didn't see because i especially with kelvin banks i don't
14:20know where the the slander is coming from outside of one snap against georgia the guy played left
14:26tackle at texas for three years he'll have three sacks we're just talking about shamar stewart who
14:30everyone loves who had one and a half sacks per season banks gave up one a year in three years
14:36and last year in the sec on top of playing schools like michigan you know who will have their entire
14:42defensive line drafted so i think there's some weird group things happening with him and i'm just
14:47doing my best to avoid it six five three fifteen out of texas started 42 games at left tackle the
14:53last three seasons um kelvin banks going to be a mid first round pick very likely uh matt miller is
14:59with us covers the nfl draft for espn all right before we let you go so we talked shador sanders and
15:06how it could play out let's look at the veteran quarterback market then like if cleveland passes on him
15:14and pittsburgh doesn't get to him because he goes i don't know the new orleans or somewhere before
15:19them what happens like do you see a cousins trade this weekend does derrick carr force his way out in
15:26new orleans now all of a sudden the shoulders supposedly has something to do with him wanting
15:30out i saw the report today how do those final dominoes fall yeah i don't think they do just to be
15:37honest i don't think we see kurt cousins traded i mean just because i don't know where he goes
15:42you know his third cousins he's not going to atlanta that or from atlanta to new orleans you're
15:47not going to trade him in the division no way i don't he's not a fit for pittsburgh i don't think
15:51i mean maybe but that doesn't feel like a very good landing spot for him so i struggle with that too
15:57like looking at okay aaron rogers is still out there i think we all assume he's going to pittsburgh
16:02but he hasn't yet what are we waiting for you know what uh i guess you know deadline spark activity
16:08maybe he thinks he's going to get a little bit more money the closer to the draft we get or something
16:12but i have a hard time finding those landing spots and whether it be derrick carr or kurt cousins
16:17it seems like all the musical chairs are taken you know the teams that wanted to add a quarterback
16:22outside of pittsburgh have added a quarterback so i think that's the situation to watch and see what
16:27happens with matt pleasure as always but i really appreciate the insight man talk soon
16:31yeah thanks guys you know you're busy enjoy your draft prep matt miller of espn
16:36you
