At least 300 people killed during the post-election violence in Mozambique

Mozambique's security forces carried out a brutal, three-month crackdown on protesters after the country's election last year, a leading international rights group said Wednesday, citing local activists who alleged that more than 300 people were killed and more than 3,000 were injured in the unrest.

00:00The Amnesty International claimed on Wednesday that at least 300 people were killed and more than 3,000 were injured in the unrest during Mozambique's contentious election.
00:10The leading international watchdog is now calling on the Mozambique authorities to investigate the killing and all rights violations in the wake of the election and to bring law enforcement officials responsible to justice.
00:22Thousands of Mozambiqueans took part in waves of protests in the weeks after the October 9 presidential and parliamentary election where Daniel Chappell of the ruling Frelimo party was declared the winner amid allegations of rigging and election fraud raised by challengers and international observers.
00:40The protests were in support of Frenatio Mulden who reigned as an independent candidate but was supported by the opposition Podemos party.
00:48The demonstrations intensified after the October 18 killing of a man's lawyer and a Podemos official who were shot by gunmen late at night while sitting in a car in Mozambique's capital, Maputo.
