00:00From being thrown into the middle of an utterly insane stunt-heavy set piece at the last minute,
00:05to having to pull off an entire movie shoot in just 48 hours,
00:09each of the following performances were already worthy of your admiration.
00:13But the ridiculous truth behind what actually went into making them a reality
00:17only makes you appreciate them that little bit more.
00:19Gareth here from whatculture.com and here are 10 recent movie performances
00:23even more impressive when you know the truth.
00:2610. A last-minute helicopter scene keeps the cast on their toes.
00:30Ambulance.
00:31When signing up to appear in a flick helmed by the action-obsessed mind
00:34behind the likes of the Transformers franchise and Armageddon,
00:37it's safe to assume that you'll wind up being thrust into the middle
00:40of a pulsating real-life stunt-heavy sequence before your time on set is over.
00:44But in the case of Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II,
00:48when working on Michael Bay's most recent project by the name of Ambulance,
00:51the duo were very much under the impression they were done for the day,
00:54before arguably one of the thriller's most intense action scenes
00:57was suddenly dropped in their laps.
00:59With both stars on their way home in the titular vehicle to get their own clothes on,
01:03the Balmy directs a radio for the two sharps to spin around and head to the L.A. River.
01:07Upon showing up to the locale, Bay would reveal to his actors,
01:10I have an idea, I have two helicopters.
01:13And before long, Gyllenhaal was hanging out the side of said ambulance
01:16as Bay improvised and entirely shot a gripping back and forth
01:20between the airborne and grounding vehicles in just two and a half hours.
01:23Madness
01:24Number 9, the entire film was shot in just two days.
01:27Boiling Point
01:28For those who haven't been treated to the pressure cooker of a film
01:31that is Philip Barantini's tension-filled culinary nightmare, Boiling Point,
01:35the story centers on Stephen Graham's anxious yet charming head chef, Andy Jones,
01:40as he navigates one of the busiest nights of the year
01:42and a kitchen full of combustible elements.
01:45But likely adding to the on-screen pressure and stress
01:47that helps make this one of the most gripping dramas of recent times
01:50was the fact that the entire process of shooting this intense set of events
01:54was ultimately crammed into just two days.
01:57Originally, the plan was to try and execute eight whole takes
02:00of the impressive single-shot tale over the course of a still ridiculous four days.
02:04But when the pandemic hit, the production was forced to suddenly shut down,
02:08effectively halving Barantini's scheduled shooting time
02:10for his finely choreographed masterpiece.
02:12It didn't matter, though, as the director was overjoyed to discover
02:15that the third take of the film was utterly nailed.
02:18Number 8, Rachel Ziegler, had some rather high-profile spectators
02:22for one particular song, West Side Story.
02:24Having to step into the shoes of one of the most iconic figures
02:27in musical theater history in a remake of one of the most adored
02:30cinematic adaptations of all time would likely be enough
02:34to leave most humans resembling an anxious puddle
02:36in the corner of a movie set.
02:38But taking that pressure-filled scenario up a few notches
02:40in the making of Steven Spielberg's recent critically acclaimed spin
02:43on West Side Story was the fact that Rachel Ziegler
02:46had some rather high-profile front-row audience members
02:48when it came time for her to warble Maria's legendary
02:51I Feel Pretty number.
02:53In one of his three no-doubt jaw-dropping set visits,
02:56the immortal Bruce Springsteen was present
02:58for Ziegler's live rendition of the song,
03:00with iconic composer Steven Sondheim,
03:02who actually wrote the lyrics for the number in question,
03:05also sitting alongside Brucey for the Maria Stars performance,
03:08understandably noting how she was starstruck
03:10to the point of not being able to go over and say hello
03:12to the unmistakable icons and two of her all-time heroes,
03:16the whole experience was enough to make Ziegler
03:18feel insanely nervous, never mind pretty.
03:20Number 7, Pedro Pascal wrecked 14 prop cars
03:23without getting injured.
03:24The unbearable weight of massive talent.
03:26Movie stunts are no joke, even when a star is only forced
03:29to take part in an action-packed exchange just a few times
03:32in order to get the sequence in the can.
03:34So you have to admire the fact that Pedro Pascal was very much gained
03:37to be whacked into by a moving prop car
03:40a frankly absurd amount of times over the course of shooting
03:42one particularly hilarious stunt,
03:44found within this year's Ode to All Things Nicolas Cage,
03:47the unbearable weight of massive talent.
03:49Perhaps even more amazingly,
03:51despite wrecking a grand total of 14 prop vehicles
03:54in the forging of this car crash of a shot,
03:56Pascal was said to have gotten through the whole ordeal
03:58without so much as a scratch on him.
04:00According to the Mandalorian star himself,
04:02when replying to a tweet revealing his 14 car wrecking exploits,
04:06he executed each and every take without messing up my hair.
04:09But I still wouldn't recommend trying this acid trip at home.
04:11Number 6, Austin Butler lost touch with who he was
04:14and was rushed to hospital, Elvis.
04:16While the chance to appear in not only Baz Luhrmann's
04:18first feature film in almost a decade,
04:21but one focusing on the life of arguably the most legendary
04:23rock and roll figure of all time was clearly too tantalizing
04:26an opportunity to turn down for Austin Butler,
04:28the need to live up to this larger-than-life icon
04:31more than took a toll on the Want Upon a Time in Hollywood star.
04:34As Butler would recall to GQ,
04:36upon looking back at the sheer lengths he went to
04:38when trying to delve into the mind of the king of rock and roll himself,
04:41Elvis Presley,
04:42you can lose touch with who you actually are,
04:44and I definitely had that when I finished Elvis,
04:47not knowing who I was.
04:48And highlighting the frankly extreme levels of pressure
04:51he put on himself throughout his gyrating work on the project,
04:54Butler would also reveal how his body ultimately broke down
04:57the moment he finished up on the shoot,
04:58and that he was eventually diagnosed with a virus that simulates appendicitis
05:02before being bedridden for seven days.
05:055. Plastic Wrap Took Its Toll On Paul Dano, The Batman
05:09It was evident from the minute he signed on the dotted Batman line
05:12that Paul Dano would put his heart and soul into making his Riddler a presence to remember.
05:17But the actor soon found himself paying the price for going to rather extreme lengths
05:22in order to authentically chill and disturb all who witnessed his Edward Nashton's
05:26many Zodiac Killer-inspired antics.
05:28As it eventually revealed to Entertainment Weekly,
05:31Dano struggled sleeping some nights due to this particularly intense personality
05:35being a little hard to come down from.
05:37Going further, the thorn in Robert Pattinson's bat's side
05:40would also admit how his idea to completely wrap his head and body in plastic wrap,
05:44to highlight how the character would have gone out of his way
05:46to avoid leaving any DNA evidence behind,
05:49eventually led to his head unexpectedly throbbing
05:51due to the excessive heat being generated beneath.
05:54Luckily, the crew later landed upon the idea of popping a few holes in the makeshift mask,
05:59but Dano would still recommend skipping the cling wrap
06:02should you opt for a Riddler cosplay this Halloween.
06:044. Walker Scobell's Dedication To Deadpool
06:07The Adam Project
06:08Walker Scobell's work as a highly believable younger version of Ryan Reynolds' Adam Reed
06:13caught the attention of just about everybody in The Adam Project.
06:16This largely inexperienced performer's ability to effectively capture the essence
06:20of his older counterpart throughout was far from just a result of the youngster's undoubted ability, however.
06:25As revealed by director Sean Levy in a conversation with The Wrap,
06:28Scobell is actually very much obsessed with Deadpool,
06:31to the point where the lad had reportedly been watching the rated-R flick since he was 7,
06:35and could even recite the sequel from memory.
06:37So by the time he was faced with having to replicate Reynolds' mannerisms on set,
06:41Scobell was so clued up on how the merc-with-the-mouth actor would deliver just about any line of dialogue,
06:46that Levy was able to entirely trust his young star to produce improvised magic,
06:50or unleash a newly forged line in precisely the way the real Ryan would without skipping a damn beat.
06:553. Bradley Cooper And Rooney Mara's Real Life Transformations
06:59Nightmare Alley
07:00The reality of an unprecedented pandemic gripping the globe left many big-screen projects on ice,
07:05until the world was in a safer place to continue.
07:07But instead of simply wasting that time on the sidelines,
07:10Bradley Cooper used his six-month enforced break in the middle of production on Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley
07:15to add another dimension to his ever-present leading light of Stanton Carlyle.
07:19With the back end of the feature largely being already in the can,
07:22Cooper decided that dropping a whopping £15 would help his character appear younger in the earlier scenes,
07:27that would eventually be filmed once they got back up and running.
07:30Rooney Mara also underwent a rather drastic change during that extended absence from set,
07:35with the Molly Cahill actor falling pregnant during the initial stint of filming,
07:38before eventually giving birth during the break.
07:41Then just one month on from bringing a child into the world,
07:44Mara epically picked right back up where she left off.
07:472. Benedict Wong Breaks His Ribs Doing His Own Stunts
07:50Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
07:53It turns out that wanting to very much throw yourself into the middle of the multiversal violence,
07:57regularly served up in Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange sequel,
08:00as revealed by fellow Benedict during a recent interview talking all things Multiverse of Madness,
08:05the current Sorcerer's Supreme star was actually left nursing four broken ribs,
08:10on the back of having his body slammed into an object during a particularly gnarly stunt on the shoot.
08:14And while it wasn't clarified as to precisely which moment resulted in this nasty collection of injuries
08:19for the Eccles-Bone sensation,
08:21it does add some additional weight to the many moments you see Wong's Wong thrown around the likes of Kamataj,
08:26and Mount Wundergore at various points in the flick.
08:29The fact Wong himself hasn't even uttered a word about said broken bones either,
08:33tells you all you need to know about the level of quietly tough thespian we're dealing with here too.
08:37But seriously, maybe leave it to the pros guys, yeah?
08:391. Jet Flying and That Football Scene Weren't a Piece of Cake
08:43Top Gun Maverick
08:44Any actor expecting a breezy few months at the office upon agreeing to appear in a Tom Cruise starring Top Gun sequel
08:50clearly hadn't done their homework.
08:52And sure enough, the relentless aviation training and all-round intensity of the shoot in general
08:57more than did a number on a few of the talented cast members.
09:00Miles Teller in particular was left feeling worse for wear on the back of being taken up in a jet for a sortie.
09:04After realising he'd broken out in hives, blood analysis would show that the rooster actor actually possessed
09:10flame retardant, pesticide, and jet fuel in his blood.
09:14Away from the impressive airborne action evidently battering the cast,
09:17the youngsters tasked with paying homage to the first film's topless volleyball scene
09:21were unexpectedly put through the ringer too.
09:23On the back of seemingly getting their shredded-up beach football sequence completely wrapped up,
09:27the likes of Glenn Powell and co. all indulged in many a beer and milkshake to celebrate.
09:31Fast forward a week and Cruise soon felt the footage was not up to scratch,
09:35forcing the anxiety-ridden actors to dive straight back into the gym day and night
09:39to prepare for the glistening sequence again.
09:42You're a cruel man, Mr. Cruise, but my god is that film epic.
09:45And that's our list of any other recent movie performances even more impressive when you know the truth.
