Jérusalem en l'an 26. Tout à la joie de retrouver Messala, son ami d'enfance, Juda Ben-Hur doit bientôt déchanter : commandant de la garnison romaine, Messala lui demande en effet de trahir les siens. Ben-Hur refuse et consomme ainsi une inévitable rupture. L'arrivée du nouveau procurateur romain provoque le drame. Une tuile tombée accidentellement du toit des Hur effraie le cheval du nouveau gouverneur. Ben-Hur est envoyé aux galères, sa mère et sa soeur disparaissent dans les geôles romaines. Trois ans durant, Ben-Hur rame sur les galères romaines. Il parvient, entre deux coups de fouet, à attirer l'attention du commandant de la flotte, Quintus Arrius. Une bataille navale malheureuse, et la galère amirale sombre corps et biens. Juda parvient à sauver Quintus Arrius, tandis que la victoire change de camp.
