00:16Kazach opera is a unique phenomenon of national tradition and European classical music.
00:21Operas such as Kshzubek and Abai brought Kazach language, melody and identity to the stage,
00:27creating a genre that is culturally aesthetic and globally known.
00:32Welcome to Kazakhstan! Welcome to Modern Nomads!
00:39Operas keep the tradition of the European school, but they can sometimes include national instruments.
00:45The melodies often sound like folk songs, long, lyrical and filled with the spirit of the steppe.
00:57Kazach opera emerged 90 years ago and remains popular at the country's three major opera houses in Astana, Almaty and Shemkent.
01:09For 90 years, the Abai opera house has been a cultural landmark staged in Western and Kazach operas.
01:16I spoke with Bulat Bukheyev, opera troupe director of the Abai opera house, who told me what makes the Kazach operatic school unique.
01:25Thereby, opera house hosted the first Kazach performances and continues to present classic works.
01:51The first Kazach opera – Kshzubek is staged every season. It was composed by Evgeny Brusilovsky in 1934.
02:16Even today, it is performed in modern theatres such as Astana, opera house.
02:21We always remember, we appreciate all the achievements, all the works of our composers, musicians, who invested in their work.
02:30And I hope that the same opera Kshzubek, I think, will be for a long time, always.
02:35Because these roots are our roots.
02:38Kshzubek tells the story of love.
02:45Kshzubek and Tuligen's families stood against their union.
02:48And this plot is often described as the Kazach Romeo and Juliet.
02:53In a dynamic fusion of East and West, theatres are experimenting with mixed-format performances.
03:10One recent example is the Astana Opera House's production, which brings together Kshzubek and Puccini's Madame Butterfly.
03:19Today, there are thousands of Kazach operas ranging from early classics to modern works.
03:45One of their newest additions to the repertoire is Han Sultan.
03:49While it tells a legend from the Golden Horde era, the music was written by contemporary composer Hamid Shangaliyev.
03:56I was struck by the opera opera in his life.
03:59One of the scenes that I got older by one time, was the one that I admired in the first experience and two of them.
04:06This movement of his career, a lot oflrakers was to play.
04:11They took notes, dropped them in the theater.
04:13One of the lessons came from the theater.
04:15They used to play the opera.
04:18They worked for opera.
04:20Openers and artists, there was no longer their time to realize.
04:25Han Sultan premiered nie tylko w Kazachstan, ale także w Turku,
04:29showing the relevance of national opera on the international stage.
04:42Today, timeless Kazach opera, like Kszybek,
04:45and modern performance Han Sultan are reaching international audiences,
04:50bringing the national music heritage to theatres across Europe, Asia, and beyond.
