00:00:00Okay, heavyweight boxing, blue shift, no contest.
00:00:06HBO is on tonight.
00:00:22The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports.
00:00:30Riddick Bowe, the man's top heavyweights avoid without fear of any sanctions.
00:00:36Are they and their managers afraid of him?
00:00:39Or are they punishing him?
00:00:41What is this rating game?
00:00:43Bowe's problems began soon after he beat his antler Holyfield for the heavyweight championship.
00:00:49For the winner by the unanimous decision,
00:00:54heavyweight, question number one,
00:00:57The Riddick Bowe,
00:01:00and he's cutting Bowe!
00:01:05Having won three championships,
00:01:08Bowe proceeded to throw one of them in the track,
00:01:11a symbolic gesture which has haunted him and the heavyweight division ever since.
00:01:16Little did he know that after losing the remaining two belts in a rematch with Holyfield,
00:01:20Riddick Bowe would still be searching for another championship opportunity one and one-half full years later.
00:01:29Out of the ring, a ratings game had begun,
00:01:33one which presently leads Bowe completely out of the heavyweight ranking.
00:01:38You might think of blaming Bowe's bad guy image.
00:01:41He knocked out Buster Nathus while Nathus was on one knee,
00:01:44and sucker punch Larry Donald at their free-fight press conference.
00:01:48There's no...whoever had him.
00:01:49I don't think that would be possible.
00:01:51No, I know.
00:01:53How, how, how, how, how, how you doing it?
00:01:55What?
00:01:56Despite the misadventures,
00:02:01the facts point to Bowe's manager and promoter, Rock Newman.
00:02:04His uncompromising style, while Bowe would camp, has come back to haunt it.
00:02:08And me and Rock, when they give, we're by ourselves.
00:02:11And if they can't get a part of money, I mean, they, they cahoots together.
00:02:15And they're trying to keep you out of the picture.
00:02:16These organizations who have shot themselves in the foot,
00:02:23blown their brains out,
00:02:25and now have not one scintilla of credibility left
00:02:31is a cancer that is upon boxing
00:02:33that must be continually exposed for what it is worth.
00:02:40So Bowe now ignores the belt
00:02:41and points to public opinion surveys
00:02:44naming him the best active heavyweight
00:02:46while George Foreman and Oliver McCall
00:02:48hold organizational titles.
00:02:52Bowe's the rebel with a car,
00:02:54the man without a ranking.
00:02:56His new goal is to earn enough public respect
00:02:58to render Foreman and McCall's titles meaningless.
00:03:01And beyond that, he can boast to the punch with Mike Tyson.
00:03:04The logical Bowe camp theory,
00:03:07whoever beats Tyson will be seen by the general public
00:03:10as the true heavyweight champion.
00:03:12He meant to be a good athlete.
00:03:17The hidden goal of the young man probably experienced
00:03:20by the young man who earned the best
00:03:20and the young man who earned the job.
00:03:21And if he's won,
00:03:23He began to find his own story and the best
00:03:24for the young man who earned the best
00:03:26before wrestling.
00:03:26And it was a good and the best
00:03:30to grab his own story.
00:03:32And if he has a good figure,
00:03:33it doesn't have to do it.
00:03:33And if he has a good figure,
00:03:35he has to do it.
00:03:36And he's going to look forward to it.
00:04:08We're live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
00:04:12In the ring, we're a former knockout Moorer, where Roy Jones did his paint job on Dame Sonny.
00:04:18Riddick Bowe now enters to try to make a statement of superiority in the heavyweight division.
00:04:22It's a 12-round bout, a heavyweight bout of great significance, Bowe against Herbie Hyde of Great Britain.
00:04:28A relatively small crowd, the number of empty seats, the multitude of empty seats in this MGM Grand Garden Arena.
00:04:35Not a particularly positive statement on Riddick Bowe's campaign for public support as the best of the active heavyweights in boxing.
00:04:45Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley. We welcome you back to this edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing.
00:04:50To watch Riddick Bowe continue to swim upstream against the tide of governing organization politics in the heavyweight division,
00:05:00his desire to prove himself the best there is for the moment.
00:05:04Working with me, as always, HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant.
00:05:06Larry, Riddick Bowe is a former heavyweight champion who lost the title fight by one point, in effect,
00:05:12who cannot get ranked, can't get another title shot. What should he do?
00:05:15Well, first, as well as second, third, and fourth, he has to do what he's doing tonight.
00:05:21He has to fight.
00:05:22Then he can try to market himself as the best heavyweight in the world, if not the heavyweight champion of the world.
00:05:30But as the great Muhammad Ali used to say, we're not as dumb as we look.
00:05:35Yes, the boxing organizations are corrupt, shamelessly corrupt, but it was Riddick Bowe who lost focus and then lost the title.
00:05:45And it was Riddick Bowe who then performed poorly, even badly, in and out of the ring in his last two fights.
00:05:52And it's Riddick Bowe who, because of the weak opposition he chooses to fight, doesn't sell a lot of tickets.
00:05:59He has to make his case in the ring, Jim.
00:06:02As opposed, for instance, to George Foreman, who holds one of the titles and makes his case on a daily basis through his vast, popular appeal.
00:06:10Well, George is in training for his battle against Axel Schultz next month.
00:06:14So, sitting in once again for George is the man who frequently performs in George's stead with us, the legendary fight trainer and manager, Gil Clancy.
00:06:21Gil, ultimately, the heart of Bowe's case has to be this idea that he is the best of all the active heavyweights. Is he?
00:06:28Well, in my opinion, Jim, in shape, and those are the key words, in shape, he is by far the best heavyweight around.
00:06:34He can box, he can punch, he can fight in sight. I can't find a weakness.
00:06:39Want to know what his weakness is? Yes, fear of flying.
00:06:42Bowe is the latest major sports figure to join John Madden in saying that he no longer feels safe on commercial airlines.
00:06:49So, he's bought a big Bowe butt to bring his entourage to and from the boxing matches.
00:06:55Right now, a chance to ride along on the bus with Big Daddy.
00:07:03It's 9 o'clock. Anybody seen Bowe yet? Did he get back?
00:07:06It's 9 o'clock. Anybody seen Bowe yet? Did he get back yet?
00:07:11Oh, man.
00:07:16We got to get out of here. Tell Bowe's in there to hustle out.
00:07:19This is the, the, uh, Bowe-mobile.
00:07:34Hey, Jim, we're going to do this just one more time.
00:07:37Are we right up there?
00:07:38Are you actually doing any work out there yet?
00:07:42No.
00:07:43No, Jim.
00:07:43Say, I'm going to be a doctor someday.
00:07:48Let's go to work. Let's go to work, guys.
00:07:50Let's go.
00:07:55This is this.
00:07:58The mobile home, the mobile home.
00:07:59This is the cream of the crop.
00:08:01The El Capo of the Capo.
00:08:03Can't get no better than that.
00:08:06Are we ready to ride? Anybody searching early?
00:08:08Yeah, we're going to go in here and visit the colonel.
00:08:26Try to clean the colonel out.
00:08:32Like that.
00:08:33Oh, yeah, that's my big brother.
00:08:58Usually, if we're going to fly, we leave on a Sunday.
00:09:04You know, I think this is good when you get to know the fellas again.
00:09:09You ain't been around them in two or three months and whatnot.
00:09:11And this is, uh, this gives us a chance to, you know, get to know one another again.
00:09:15Oh, yeah, that's my big brother.
00:09:37The United States is going to bust the country.
00:10:07The United States is going to bust the country.
00:10:37The United States is going to bust the country.
00:10:44The United States is going to bust the country.
00:10:47Back live at ringside at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, coming up very shortly.
00:11:11Riddick Bowe will enter the ring to take on Herbie Hyde in this 12th round.
00:11:15Back live at ringside at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, coming up very shortly.
00:11:19Riddick Bowe will enter the ring to take on Herbie Hyde in this 12-round heavyweight bout
00:11:24to try to establish championship-style credentials.
00:11:28And as we welcome you back, you look at us getting ready to chronicle yet another British heavyweight.
00:11:33I'll tell you in advance, this is not Frank Bruno, this is not Lennox Lewis, this is another one.
00:11:38His name is Herbie Hyde.
00:11:40Larry Merchant, who is Herbie Hyde, and what chance, if any, does he have to beat Riddick Bowe?
00:11:43Well, before you say anything else about Herbie Hyde, you have to say that this is a fighter
00:11:49who went to a private boarding school.
00:11:52I have never heard of a fighter who went to a boarding school, a world-class fighter,
00:11:57unless that boarding school had bars on the windows and armed monitors.
00:12:02Can a preppy actually beat a graduate of Bed-Style, the hardest of the hard school of Knox?
00:12:11I don't know.
00:12:12Can a refrigerator fly?
00:12:14But say this for Hyde.
00:12:16He does have a hit-and-run style, you might call it a Hyde-y-seek style, that could give Bowe trouble.
00:12:23He calls himself the Dancing Destroyer, a contradiction that is explained when you see him in the ring.
00:12:31He does have the intuition and instincts of a boxer, but sometimes he'll stand and fight and pick a fight,
00:12:38and then he has the instincts and intuition of a fighter.
00:12:43Jim, I thought I had seen everything in boxing, but surely one of them wasn't a preppy in a big heavyweight fight.
00:12:50You seem to be saying if he has a chance, it's a boxer's chance.
00:12:54All right, well, Gil Clancy, we get ready to watch a bout between a heavyweight,
00:12:58who used to be a cruiserweight, who now weighs 214, that's Hyde,
00:13:02against Bowe, who weighs 241 and looks pretty good.
00:13:06Now, is Hyde going to have to Hyde to have a chance?
00:13:09Well, Herbie Hyde is a good athlete.
00:13:11He has good foot speed, good hand speed, good punching power,
00:13:15and he has the instinct, if he nails you with a good punch, to try to get you out of there.
00:13:19But what he's really doing is stepping up, way up in class.
00:13:22He's giving up size, experience, and technique.
00:13:25And, you know, he still has some of those amateur habits.
00:13:28He pulls his head back to get away from the punch,
00:13:30he drops his right hand when he throws a left jab,
00:13:32and he's vulnerable to punching power.
00:13:35I think that it's going to be a tough night for Herbie Hyde.
00:13:38Yeah, so even though he's had 26 professional bouts,
00:13:40there's plenty yet to be learned about Herbie Hyde.
00:13:43And with an eye toward that, we commissioned the help of our colleague Gary Norman
00:13:47of Sky Television, who sends across the Atlantic
00:13:49this very British look at the British heavyweight.
00:13:52The realisation of a dream, a memory that would live with him forever.
00:14:17Herbie Hyde was a champion.
00:14:18I was disappointed, he didn't get help, but I was happy.
00:14:22I was happy as well.
00:14:24The joy of being a world champion, the joy of lifting the belt.
00:14:29I got the best memory of my life.
00:14:33Hyde came to this country as a young child.
00:14:36His adoptive parents raised him in the quiet Norfolk countryside
00:14:38in the sleepy village of Tavrum, who remembers little of his native Nigeria.
00:14:42He only boxed at school to avoid doing homework, but it served him well,
00:14:47and by 1989, he'd made his professional debut.
00:14:50Even then, he was as confident inside the ring as out.
00:14:53I've always felt like that guy, and I still feel like that now.
00:14:58That's just me, you know, and we all have, we all have feelings from,
00:15:03I have a very self-confidence.
00:15:05I've always believed in myself.
00:15:07I always thought I could do it, and I still feel like that now.
00:15:09Like any young professional, a succession of quick, spectacular victories followed,
00:15:15but it was his win over Michael Bent that really caught the headline.
00:15:19Their pre-fight press conference raised a few eyebrows, too.
00:15:21These incredible scenes were witnessed by millions on television.
00:15:28There, to set an example and publicise the fight,
00:15:30both were fined in the region of $20,000.
00:15:33Hyde has also made the headlines outside of the ring.
00:15:36He's a young man trying to come to terms with who and what he is,
00:15:39and, as he says, anyone can make a mistake.
00:15:42You know, I'm a bad person, but a lot of people,
00:15:45they don't know me because I'm shy.
00:15:47I don't talk to a lot of people.
00:15:48They might think otherwise, but that's life.
00:15:52I mean, what's happened to me can happen to anyone.
00:15:55It can happen to the Queen.
00:15:57It's happened to them now, so...
00:16:00I mean, that's life.
00:16:02Hyde isn't a bad man.
00:16:03This is his young adopted brother, Alan,
00:16:05seriously ill with leukaemia.
00:16:07After winning the World Championship,
00:16:09Hyde donated the belt to the hospital that was looking after him
00:16:12to raise some money.
00:16:14Well, now you know a little bit about Herbie Hyde, the man.
00:16:17But what about Hyde and Bo as a fight?
00:16:20Bo will enter the ring some 20 pounds heavier than Herbie Hyde
00:16:23and some 3 to 4 inches taller.
00:16:26So who better to discuss this fight
00:16:28than the former World Heavyweight Champion, Lennox Lewis?
00:16:31Gary, Gary, let's discuss this over a cup of tea.
00:16:37Gary, size is important.
00:16:38Let me tell you why.
00:16:40For Herbie, size is important
00:16:42because he's the smaller guy.
00:16:45So he has to utilise his speed
00:16:47and make sure that he keeps on the move
00:16:49and keep Bo missing.
00:16:51For Bo, he's got the size.
00:16:53He has to use his weight and his power
00:16:55and he has to make sure that he doesn't miss.
00:16:59Let's look at size in terms of weight.
00:17:01Primo Connera was the heaviest champion of all time,
00:17:04Foreman the second in his second Spellas Champion.
00:17:07Bo is the all-time number five,
00:17:09but Hyde weighs in at number 26,
00:17:12a mere 216 pounds.
00:17:14If we look at height,
00:17:15Bo will have some 3-inch advantage.
00:17:17But at 6'1 1⁄2",
00:17:19Hyde is taller than all of these previous champions.
00:17:22Liston, Tyson, Patterson and Marciano.
00:17:26Emmanuel Stewart thinks Hyde
00:17:28can use these factors to his advantage.
00:17:30Well, Herbie Hyde has the style
00:17:34that is, I think, necessary to beat Bo.
00:17:37Bo is physically a very big man, as we all know,
00:17:39and you're not going to be able to add muscle to him anyway.
00:17:42And I think the fact that Herbie moves and boxes
00:17:45is going to be the type of a style that will give Bo his biggest problem.
00:17:49If you want exact comparisons,
00:17:51Hyde is almost identical in height and weight to Holyfield and Liston.
00:17:55And they weren't bad, were they?
00:17:57Well, there you have it.
00:17:57Now you know about Hyde the man and Hyde Bo the fight.
00:18:01And it seems, by opinion, that size really is important.
00:18:04Don't let anybody tell you any different.
00:18:06Now, Lennox, you think you can make me a world champion?
00:18:10I doubt it, Gary.
00:18:11I think you better stick to checkers or chess.
00:18:15No checkers or chess here tonight
00:18:18as we're ready for the entrances of the two fighters.
00:18:22First, a look at the tail of the tape.
00:18:23Riddick, Bo, as you know, outweighed Hyde.
00:18:25At the weigh-in two days ago by 27 pounds,
00:18:28he has similar advantages in height and reach.
00:18:31Larry?
00:18:32You know, Hyde has said that if they were of equal weight,
00:18:35this wouldn't even be a fight.
00:18:37But wishing won't make it so.
00:18:39Here are the punch stat numbers to give you an idea of their activity.
00:18:45Roughly the same kinds of numbers.
00:18:47I don't know what any of this means
00:18:49since Bo has fought much more formidable opposition than Hyde does.
00:18:53The jab numbers will also show you they're more active than most heavyweights in that department.
00:19:01But Bo throws an awfully big one.
00:19:04Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:19:07Harold?
00:19:07The Herbie Hyde-Riddick, Bo, fight will be 12 rounds.
00:19:11There are three pertinent rules we wish to point out.
00:19:13Number one, we will go to the scorecard just after three rounds on an accidental headbutt.
00:19:17Number two, if the fighter stops in the middle of a round to do a fight,
00:19:20we will score the partially completed rounds.
00:19:23And lastly, if a fighter goes through the rope,
00:19:25he has 20 seconds to get back, whether he is on or off the ring apron.
00:19:29Jim?
00:19:30All right, Harold.
00:19:31And just moments ago, we were told that there will be a delay
00:19:34before the fighters enter the ring
00:19:35because Riddick, Bo, has had difficulty finding a pair of Reyes 10-ounce gloves
00:19:39which would fit his hands.
00:19:41And they are now on to an alternate set of gloves
00:19:43as Riddick continues to lace and get himself taped and finished.
00:19:47And obviously, he's not going to enter the ring
00:19:49until the gloves are completely on.
00:19:52And he will be the man entering the ring first.
00:19:54Larry?
00:19:54Gil, how does that happen?
00:19:56I mean, the guy fights two or three times a year.
00:19:59Isn't he supposed to have gloves that fit?
00:20:01There's no way in the world that that's supposed to happen
00:20:03because at the weigh-in,
00:20:06both fighters are supposed to be presented their gloves by the commission.
00:20:10They try the gloves on after they're tried on.
00:20:13They're initialed by the commission
00:20:15and also by the opposing manager.
00:20:18And they're put away until fight time.
00:20:20Unless Bo's hands grew in two days,
00:20:23there's no reason why this could happen.
00:20:25Maybe he's been eating with his hands.
00:20:27Harold, is there any pertinent rule here?
00:20:29No, Jim, but I'll tell you.
00:20:30The deal's 100% correct.
00:20:32Now, I was there.
00:20:33The fighters weighed in,
00:20:35and then, you know,
00:20:36a member of each camp went over for the rules meeting,
00:20:38and the fighters tried the gloves on
00:20:39after they met with the doctor.
00:20:41Riddick tried on, you know, the first set,
00:20:43and then he tried on the orphanage set
00:20:45in case, you know, one of the gloves gets cut.
00:20:48He tried on two sets of gloves.
00:20:49There's absolutely no question
00:20:51that he tried gloves on Thursday.
00:20:52But when he did try the gloves on on Thursday,
00:20:55his hands weren't bandaged,
00:20:57and apparently they didn't take that into consideration.
00:21:00And now with the hands bandage,
00:21:01he can't get his hands into the gloves.
00:21:03Among those queuing at ringside,
00:21:05various celebrities.
00:21:07This is a celebrity-studded weekend in Las Vegas.
00:21:09So even though the crowd is smaller
00:21:11than might have been expected,
00:21:12it doesn't lack for big names
00:21:13like his Jackness,
00:21:15who is seated on the far side of the ring
00:21:17directly across from us
00:21:19in the same row with former Dallas Cowboys coach
00:21:22and Fox television football commentator
00:21:25and HBO television football commentator,
00:21:27Jimmy Johnson,
00:21:28a member of our Inside the NFL staff.
00:21:30There's marvelous Marvin Hagler,
00:21:32who has been residing in Italy
00:21:33and pursuing his acting career there
00:21:35for these past several years,
00:21:37making a rare appearance here at ringside,
00:21:39as is Billy Idol.
00:21:43Not exactly my idol,
00:21:45but I suppose he is the idol.
00:21:46No, but Marvelous is one of your idols, isn't he?
00:21:48Absolutely.
00:21:49And it's great to see Hagler here.
00:21:51And now we're back in the dressing room with Bo,
00:21:53and now he takes the left glove off,
00:21:55and I guess they're going to start over.
00:21:58This doesn't give him confidence
00:22:00in what his people are doing for him,
00:22:02does it, Gil?
00:22:02Absolutely not.
00:22:03I mean, it just certainly can't take him,
00:22:05take his concentration away,
00:22:06especially in the early rounds.
00:22:08But he seems to be pretty calm,
00:22:10which I know if I was there,
00:22:12I wouldn't be that calm.
00:22:15Well, helping to keep him calm, of course,
00:22:17the man in the foreground,
00:22:18and we talk about legend,
00:22:21Eddie Futch,
00:22:21who has trained 18 world champions,
00:22:25among them,
00:22:26some of the best heavyweights of all time.
00:22:28You know, I think that Eddie Futch,
00:22:30early on,
00:22:32saw Bo as his ultimate creation,
00:22:36so to speak,
00:22:36of the 18 champions he's been with.
00:22:40You know,
00:22:40much as Mike Tyson
00:22:41was the ultimate creation of Customato,
00:22:44for example.
00:22:45But he has,
00:22:47in his own sly way,
00:22:49needled the manager and promoter,
00:22:52Rock Newman,
00:22:53for letting Bo go off course,
00:22:57go on that trip to Africa,
00:22:59if you can recall,
00:23:00stop thinking about fighting,
00:23:02and somehow losing the focus
00:23:05that resulted in that very narrow defeat
00:23:08to Holyfield.
00:23:10And you could feel,
00:23:11I think,
00:23:11last year,
00:23:12immediately after the long trip,
00:23:14Eddie sort of began
00:23:15to distance himself
00:23:16a little bit
00:23:17from the notion
00:23:17that any of his career
00:23:19should be judged
00:23:20on the success or failure
00:23:21of Riddick Bowe.
00:23:22Well,
00:23:23now,
00:23:24having learned his mistake
00:23:25as he repeats in a mantra,
00:23:28we'll see if tonight
00:23:30he can demonstrate it.
00:23:31Bo continually saying
00:23:32that the second Holyfield fight
00:23:34was a learning experience,
00:23:36teaching him
00:23:37that he had to continue
00:23:38to be dedicated,
00:23:39that he had to continue
00:23:40to commit in the gym every day.
00:23:42He was going to have a chance
00:23:43to maximize
00:23:44his capabilities as a fighter.
00:23:46And they still can't find the glove
00:23:47that feels comfortable on Bo.
00:23:50And it is very important
00:23:52because if he goes in the ring
00:23:53with a glove
00:23:54that doesn't fit properly,
00:23:55one left jab
00:23:56and he can injure his hand.
00:23:57Earlier,
00:23:58I said
00:23:58that I thought
00:23:59I had to feed everything,
00:24:01Jim.
00:24:01Here's another thing
00:24:02I haven't seen.
00:24:03Well,
00:24:04Riddick Bowe's career
00:24:05is haunted
00:24:06by unusual circumstances.
00:24:08You had the parachutist
00:24:09in the ring
00:24:09in the second Holyfield fight.
00:24:11You had the no contest
00:24:12against Buster Mathis
00:24:13when he hit Mathis
00:24:14while he was down
00:24:15on one knee.
00:24:16You had the altercation
00:24:17with Larry Donald,
00:24:18the really horrid display
00:24:20of bad behavior
00:24:21with Larry Donald
00:24:22at the pre-fight press conference
00:24:23a few months ago.
00:24:25and now you have
00:24:26the unlaceable glove
00:24:28or the non-fitting glove
00:24:30which is creating
00:24:31a massive delay
00:24:32prior to this fight.
00:24:33This is as long now
00:24:34as the delay
00:24:36which preceded
00:24:37Finks-Tyson
00:24:38back in 1988.
00:24:40Remember when
00:24:41Finks-Tyson refused
00:24:43to come out
00:24:43of the dressing room
00:24:44until he was satisfied
00:24:46that Finks
00:24:47wasn't getting
00:24:47preferential treatment?
00:24:50Is that the occasion
00:24:51when Finks-Tyson put his fist
00:24:52through a cardboard wall?
00:24:57Rock Newman,
00:24:58the manager,
00:24:59Gill,
00:25:02has been talking
00:25:03incessantly
00:25:04about a potential
00:25:05gigantic fight
00:25:07with Tyson
00:25:08even if that is
00:25:09a fanciful thing
00:25:10and a thing
00:25:11that he just hopes for
00:25:12and we all understand
00:25:13he's trying to build
00:25:14something up.
00:25:15Does that do a fighter
00:25:16any good before a fight?
00:25:18Well, it certainly
00:25:18is going to put a lot
00:25:19of pressure on Bo
00:25:20because he knows
00:25:21that even if he beats
00:25:23Herbie Hyde
00:25:24if he does it
00:25:24with a lackluster
00:25:25performance
00:25:26it's going to take
00:25:26a big edge
00:25:27off of a Tyson
00:25:29both fight.
00:25:29You know,
00:25:29you always have
00:25:30George Foreman
00:25:31lurking in the wings
00:25:33that can step in
00:25:34and fight Tyson
00:25:34which is a bigger fight.
00:25:37You know,
00:25:37there's a fine line
00:25:38between distraction
00:25:39and inspiration
00:25:40I think in this case
00:25:42and...
00:25:43Is that a song, Larry?
00:25:45I'll ask Billy Idol.
00:25:46Yeah, ask Billy Idol
00:25:47because we idolize
00:25:49the guy as you know
00:25:50and now you see
00:25:53that Riddick
00:25:53is apparently satisfied
00:25:55once and for all
00:25:55with the left glove
00:25:56so in moments
00:25:57he'll be coming out.
00:25:57Incidentally,
00:25:58his entry music, guys,
00:26:00is Fight to Power
00:26:01by the OJs.
00:26:02It's a venerable song
00:26:04excuse me
00:26:05by the Isley Brothers.
00:26:06It's a venerable song
00:26:07several years old
00:26:07older than you might
00:26:08have expected
00:26:08for a relatively
00:26:10hip guy like Riddick
00:26:11but he thinks
00:26:12that the lyrics
00:26:13of the song
00:26:14accurately portray
00:26:15his persona
00:26:16as the odd man
00:26:17out in the heavyweight division
00:26:18the man who has to
00:26:18fight against
00:26:19the established authorities
00:26:21in the division
00:26:22to get attention
00:26:23and respect.
00:26:25You know, Jim,
00:26:26also, I'm watching
00:26:26Riddick Bono.
00:26:27I really admire the man
00:26:28under these circumstances
00:26:30to be as calm
00:26:31as he is.
00:26:32I mean,
00:26:32he's handling himself
00:26:34very, very well,
00:26:35I think.
00:26:36Yeah, but look,
00:26:37he's a professional.
00:26:38He's been in the ring
00:26:38many times
00:26:39and he knows
00:26:40that this is
00:26:41some kind
00:26:41of an embarrassment.
00:26:43I mean,
00:26:43the curtain
00:26:44is supposed to be up.
00:26:45He's supposed
00:26:45to be on stage
00:26:46and he knows
00:26:48everybody is sitting
00:26:49out here wondering
00:26:50what's going on.
00:26:51Yeah, but Larry,
00:26:52somebody goofed
00:26:53and I think he knows
00:26:54it wasn't him
00:26:55and that's why
00:26:56I really think
00:26:56that he wants
00:26:58everything done properly
00:26:59which he should.
00:27:01Harold,
00:27:01is there a rule
00:27:02about delays?
00:27:03No, Jim,
00:27:04but I wanted to point out
00:27:05in the United States,
00:27:06let's go through this
00:27:07a little,
00:27:07in the United States
00:27:08basically in world title fights
00:27:09we use two types of gloves.
00:27:11We use the Everlast glove
00:27:12and the Reyes glove.
00:27:13Generally,
00:27:14a fighter with big hands,
00:27:16big heavyweights,
00:27:17do use the Everlast glove
00:27:19because they seem
00:27:20to fit better.
00:27:21The lower divisions
00:27:21all want the Reyes glove.
00:27:23The Reyes glove
00:27:24is obviously
00:27:24much more popular
00:27:25but the choice
00:27:26of the boxing glove
00:27:27is always with the promoter.
00:27:29In other words,
00:27:30Spencer promotion,
00:27:31pick the glove.
00:27:31Rock Newman certainly
00:27:33had the right to pick
00:27:34whichever glove he wanted.
00:27:36Choice of gloves
00:27:37is with the promoter,
00:27:38not the boxing commission.
00:27:39So certainly,
00:27:40they should have,
00:27:41you know,
00:27:41if the Reyes didn't fit Riddick,
00:27:43he should have asked Rock
00:27:44to get, you know,
00:27:45sets of Everlast gloves
00:27:46and fought with Everlast,
00:27:47not with Reyes.
00:27:49But Harold,
00:27:50they tried the gloves on
00:27:51at the weigh-in.
00:27:52Yes, correct,
00:27:53but they didn't have
00:27:53any Everlast there.
00:27:54They had Reyes.
00:27:55I mean,
00:27:56Rock must have put
00:27:56all Reyes gloves
00:27:57and obviously,
00:27:58they don't fit Riddick
00:27:59too big,
00:27:59too well
00:28:00because his hands
00:28:01are too large.
00:28:02All of a sudden,
00:28:03I get that sinking feeling
00:28:05that I know more
00:28:06about gloves now
00:28:07than I want to know.
00:28:09When you light the glove,
00:28:11interestingly enough,
00:28:11it's very important
00:28:12that they not be on the top
00:28:13so that you can't cut
00:28:14a guy with a knot.
00:28:15They should tape over the knot.
00:28:17And we saw a member
00:28:18of Herbie Hyde's camp
00:28:19in the Riddick
00:28:20dressing room
00:28:21because a member
00:28:22of the opposing camp
00:28:23is always welcomed
00:28:24into the other fighters' camp
00:28:26to watch
00:28:27that the gloves
00:28:27are put on properly.
00:28:29Yes.
00:28:30Meanwhile,
00:28:31the people in
00:28:32Herbie Hyde's camp
00:28:34were thrilled
00:28:34that Hyde's supporters
00:28:36outnumbered
00:28:38and made more noise
00:28:39than Bo's supporters
00:28:40at the weigh-in
00:28:41a couple of days ago.
00:28:42But, of course,
00:28:43we continue to cover
00:28:44the lamentable history
00:28:45of British heavyweights.
00:28:47Here are some
00:28:48of their misfortunes
00:28:49over the course
00:28:50of the past 40 or so years.
00:28:51Lenny Clewis, of course,
00:28:52interrupting a 100-year drought
00:28:54when he was awarded
00:28:55the World Boxing Council
00:28:57Heavyweight Championship,
00:28:58awarded the championship
00:29:00after Riddick Bowe
00:29:01dumped the belt
00:29:02in the garbage can
00:29:03a few years back.
00:29:06And I suppose
00:29:07if Herbie Hyde
00:29:10doesn't do better
00:29:12tonight
00:29:13than
00:29:13Lewis did
00:29:14in his last fight,
00:29:15the old saying
00:29:17that we've got
00:29:18another British
00:29:19horizontal heavyweight
00:29:20will
00:29:21once again
00:29:23Mr. Invisory
00:29:26Dominic here
00:29:27once again
00:29:28Dominic
00:29:28or if he gets hit
00:29:30with a good body punch
00:29:31and
00:29:31falls down
00:29:33and complains
00:29:34of getting hit low,
00:29:35we can have another
00:29:36feinting Phil Scott.
00:29:37So there you go.
00:29:38He has two invitations.
00:29:39But, you know,
00:29:40if Herbie Hyde
00:29:42gets lucky
00:29:42and hits Riddick Bowe
00:29:43on the chin
00:29:43in the first round
00:29:44and gets him out of there,
00:29:45this glove situation
00:29:47is going to be
00:29:47the big news story tomorrow.
00:29:49You guys ready
00:29:50to hear Fight the Power
00:29:51by the Isley Brothers?
00:29:52We've been talking
00:29:52about it for two days.
00:29:54Larry can hardly sit still.
00:29:56He wants to get up
00:29:56and dance.
00:29:57Larry wanted Riddick
00:29:58to enter on a
00:29:58Billy Idol song,
00:29:59I think.
00:30:00And since there's been
00:30:01a lot of idle time here,
00:30:03it seems appropriate.
00:30:05I'll settle for
00:30:05a John Philip Sousa march.
00:30:08Anything to get him
00:30:09out of that dressing room.
00:30:11The unanimous decision
00:30:13against Larry Donald
00:30:14was one of the least
00:30:14watchable fights
00:30:15we've ever carried
00:30:16here on HBO.
00:30:18Donald spent
00:30:19virtually the entire
00:30:20fight in reverse
00:30:21and threw fewer
00:30:23than 20 punches
00:30:24in some rounds.
00:30:25There's Mackie Shilstone,
00:30:26the man who is
00:30:27responsible for
00:30:27sculpting Bowe's form
00:30:29via nutrition
00:30:30and fitness training.
00:30:33Virtually the entire
00:30:34fight in reverse
00:30:35and threw fewer
00:30:37than 20 punches
00:30:37in some rounds.
00:30:39There's Mackie Shilstone,
00:30:40the man who is
00:30:40responsible for
00:30:41sculpting Bowe's form
00:30:43via nutrition
00:30:44and fitness training.
00:30:46For a moment there,
00:30:47i thought we might have to go to a replacement heavyweight very good larry would it be able to
00:30:54i'm reaching larry would it be able to hit the replacement you can't hit in the dressing room
00:31:00you gotta hit in the ring oh is that the idea did i tell you about fight the power
00:31:09larry sit still please
00:31:17oh
00:31:34crowd was relatively small to begin with now it's a small quiet crowd as moe enters after the long
00:31:40loving delay i think the crowds have filled up pretty well oh jim if you look around it's uh
00:31:45yeah they did some walk-up trade tonight didn't they quite a bit happens more with the heavyweights
00:31:50than with fighters in other weight classes it's a busy weekend here in town so uh a lot of people
00:31:56were available to step up to the windows this afternoon and say let's go see big daddy bow
00:32:11now the crowd comes alive i think gill he appears to be in superb condition incidentally you can turn
00:32:16this is the best condition that i've seen a riddick bow in since since he defeated the man of holyfield
00:32:22i uh spoke to him yesterday and uh playing around i just poked him in the in the afternoon he was as
00:32:28hot as a rock
00:32:39into the ring he comes from brooklyn new york and now for washington maryland the riddick big daddy bow 35
00:32:47wins the one loss a razor-thin decision loss to holyfield in november of 1993 29 ko's won no
00:32:55decision last summer against buster mathis jr former heavyweight champion of the world
00:33:00herbie hyde is now looking for his school tie jim either that or he's hiding
00:33:21every possible play on hide's last name has been used by the headline writers
00:33:25by these three announcers tonight no i know i i'm holding one in reserve you do have one one
00:33:31in reserve glad to hear that we'll look forward to its emergence spontaneously no doubt there
00:33:40and now the live horns to establish the prelude for herbie hyde's entrance
00:33:46and a few fans from the uk
00:33:57tiny island that once ruled the world welcome to one las vegas tonight sorry gill go ahead it's okay
00:34:01i've been watching mini bow up in the ring and he just seems bored i mean with all of this uh he just
00:34:06seems bored he doesn't seem like he's uh why should he be any different
00:34:14take a look he's just walking around very slowly well we'll see him as soon as we get
00:34:19hide into the ring and there you see that he's had 25 knockouts in 26 fights the one fight that
00:34:24went the distance was against the cagey veteran everett bigfoot martin pretty hard to whack martin out of
00:34:30there he went the distance towards foreman as well yeah well he's uh one of those guys he's uh got
00:34:35the shotguns over for his shoes and he fights for him out of a crouching very difficult to nail with
00:34:40two or three solid punches so it's no disgrace to have to go to a decision against bigfoot and the
00:34:45other 25 fights knockouts for kirby hyde including the most noteworthy one a seventh round knockout of
00:34:54michael bent about a year ago hide's mother moved to uh great britain when he was two years old she
00:35:03married an engineer there he sent him to that prep school i've been talking about he has an eight-year-old
00:35:13brother who has leukemia both his father and his brother are here are present
00:35:19herbie hyde born in nigeria fighting out of norwich england 26 wins 25 ko's he is one of several
00:35:29contenders for heavyweight honors in the two or three years ahead right now let's go up the ring

00:38:41dancing destroyer
00:38:43herbie
00:38:45ho
00:38:47all right herbie let's go
00:38:55okay
00:39:09okay i spoke to both fighters in the dressing room i'm cautioning again will be my command at all times shake hands good luck
00:39:17herbie
00:39:19herbie hyde might be compared to a
00:39:21star in the triple-a leagues
00:39:23he's in the big leagues now
00:39:25can he stand in on the curve
00:39:27can he get around on the fastball
00:39:29the
00:39:39the bell sounds richard steel the referee
00:39:41and
00:39:43round one begins the title
00:39:45to which michael buffer referred in his free fight introductions is granted by an organization which is not recognized by HBO
00:39:51so for our purposes this is not a world championship bout
00:39:55herbie hyde starts the action
00:39:57with a combination to bow's head
00:39:59riddick bow promised us yesterday that he would start off going to
00:40:05hyde's body
00:40:07to determine whether his strength and weight advantages would be
00:40:13the telltale thing if he goes to the body
00:40:15and by hyde moving to the right
00:40:19that makes it a nun fight and confuses uh
00:40:22riddick bow
00:40:23any time he slides over
00:40:25makes it very very difficult for bow
00:40:31bow is just stalking him at least he should be sticking out that left jab
00:40:37bow goes the first minute of the punch almost without throwing a bite
00:40:41where he finally delivers a left jab
00:40:43right
00:40:45we've seen already on a couple of occasions gill we talked about earlier that intuition when to jump in
00:40:49well
00:40:51Hyde again if he nails you with a good solid punch i mean he lets it all hang out
00:40:55he takes chances then
00:40:57meanwhile he still fights with that chin way up in the air
00:40:59and he has a tendency to pull back from punches
00:41:01and even when he's going in punching that heads up in the air
00:41:05doesn't move his head too much
00:41:07does bow
00:41:09bow
00:41:11yes bow can slip a punch
00:41:13does it very smoothly
00:41:21another assault by hyde and he backs away
00:41:23and bow is asking him to come on in and fight
00:41:25i hope he doesn't do that all night
00:41:27he's going to have to make a fight
00:41:29snap that jab
00:41:31do something
00:41:33how do you account for bow's low activity level so far gill
00:41:35he's just not throwing anything
00:41:37well i had mentioned that he looked a little lethargic going into the ring before the fight
00:41:41then he really i don't know what their fight plan was but i'm sure this is not what eddie putz would like to see him do
00:41:51bow by his own admission didn't do much to cut off the ring against larry donald in december
00:41:59he said that he didn't feel like working that hard some of the time against donald
00:42:03and thought that he didn't have to to dominate the fight that much was true
00:42:07that much was true
00:42:09and early in this fight uh... jim you can see that hide is much quicker as the two
00:42:13so
00:42:15to no one's surprise
00:42:17hyde
00:42:19landing to the body
00:42:21and bow with nothing in reply
00:42:25another flurry for hyde
00:42:29it's been an easy round for hyde
00:42:31because bow
00:42:33hasn't retaliated with much of anything
00:42:35a hard right hand by hyde
00:42:37and an uppercut to punctuate the first round
00:42:39riddick bow should have stayed in his dressing room
00:42:41for another three minutes gill
00:42:43well again the delay
00:42:45and when he got up into the ring he just
00:42:47didn't seem to be focused
00:42:49before the fight
00:42:51he's going to have to change his strategy a little bit
00:42:53he's going to have to move that jab
00:42:55double the jab
00:42:57and try to count the height when hyde
00:42:59again comes in
00:43:01you pull away from the first jab
00:43:03i want you to
00:43:05step in
00:43:07make it make change
00:43:09but you've got to get off of that jab
00:43:11you can't let you get in
00:43:13move around like that
00:43:15and pick you off
00:43:17here's that quick hard right at the end of the round
00:43:19watch
00:43:20really landed solidly
00:43:21solidly gill
00:43:23but bow didn't flinch
00:43:25well if he didn't flinch from that one
00:43:27he's not going to get hit much harder
00:43:29maybe a lot more often than not much harder
00:43:31it was a perfect punch right on the button
00:43:33in his last few fights
00:43:35bow hasn't been hard to hit
00:43:37buster mathis connected with power shots
00:43:39even donald
00:43:41when he was willing to mix it up and throw a little bit
00:43:43was able to connect with power shots
00:43:45and as you saw in the first round there
00:43:47herbie hyde had no trouble connecting
00:43:49when he took his shots against riddick bow
00:43:59what those flurries seem to do gill
00:44:01was make
00:44:03bow a little bit more tentative
00:44:05in going after him
00:44:07a lot more tentative larry's being
00:44:09very tentative up to this point
00:44:11it's not a question of him beating uh
00:44:13pie to the punch he just is
00:44:15he's not with it at the moment
00:44:17how much of this can be seen as respect for hyde
00:44:23and what he's shown in the way of
00:44:25punching power gill
00:44:27well i'm sure that hyde got his respect in that first round
00:44:29solid punches by hyde
00:44:31and again bow is just walking in
00:44:33without punching
00:44:35not throwing any punches at all
00:44:37just walking in
00:44:39he talks about his ability to slip punches
00:44:41and he does have the gift
00:44:43but he hadn't shown much of it here
00:44:45with his hands
00:44:47and we heard any punch in the corner between rounds
00:44:49telling bow to use that left jab
00:44:51to set him up
00:44:53and bow is just walking in
00:44:55not doing that
00:44:57now he's trying to impose his strength on her behind
00:44:59well he got in two body shots with the right hand
00:45:01and an uppercut
00:45:03bow is complaining of heads
00:45:05of hyde's head in his eye
00:45:07but it is bow who was holding hyde in
00:45:09and hyde was trying to get out
00:45:11well if bow does not continue
00:45:13this fight's over and hyde's the winner
00:45:15okay okay
00:45:17you guys gotta watch yourself
00:45:19you got to watch yourself
00:45:21maybe that'll get bow angry
00:45:23headbutt one more time
00:45:25and he might be disqualified okay
00:45:27one more headbutt and he'd be disqualified
00:45:31seems a little rash doesn't it gill
00:45:33seems that way to me and especially the way hyde fights
00:45:35he's not the kind of a guy that would be butting with his head
00:45:37because that head's way up in the air
00:45:39even if he were he's only done it once
00:45:45awfully early here
00:45:47number two and bow connects with a solid left hook inside
00:45:49or check it i mean hyde connects with a solid left hook inside
00:45:55bow still chasing not cutting off the ring much
00:45:57and taking more than he's giving against her behind
00:45:59and that time he threw a jab
00:46:01and instinctively duck duck the punch that hyde did not throw
00:46:05which means that hyde has his respect
00:46:07hyde lands over the top with a right hand
00:46:13and now to the body
00:46:15riddick bow looking ill prepared to defend himself
00:46:17against the supposedly outmatched
00:46:19herby hyde
00:46:21the odds in the sports books here
00:46:23hovered between four to one and five to one
00:46:25bow a lopsided favorite
00:46:31little trickle of blood
00:46:33at the right nostril of herby hyde
00:46:35hyde
00:46:43hyde still coming forward with resolution
00:46:45bow beginning to be a little bit more active
00:46:47with the left jab though both were
00:46:49pawing rather than snapping
00:46:51and another right hand over the top by hyde
00:46:53and hyde is starting to breathe heavily from the mouth
00:46:55which means maybe the pressure of the crowd
00:46:57we never got to
00:46:59but he's
00:47:01hard right hands
00:47:03bow momentarily stunned there
00:47:05but yet another good round for
00:47:07hyde
00:47:09good
00:47:11nice round mate
00:47:13nice round
00:47:15nice round
00:47:17nice round
00:47:19nice round
00:47:21nice round
00:47:23nice round
00:47:25relax mate
00:47:27he's worried
00:47:29burn fire
00:47:31give him a chance if he did
00:47:33he backed him all the time
00:47:35okay
00:47:37watch yourself okay
00:47:39that right hand to the body was a good shot
00:47:41i want you to use more of those
00:47:43let's take a look and see what happened in the corner
00:47:45because if you notice
00:47:47bow is holding on to hyde
00:47:49but i don't see a deliberate but as yet
00:47:51they were there
00:47:53i guess i saw a slight collision
00:47:55but not anything that looked deliberate
00:47:57actually bow's right hand to the body
00:47:59lifted hyde up
00:48:01and his head banged at the bow
00:48:03was certainly was not deliberate
00:48:05round three begins
00:48:07the first two rounds appeared to us
00:48:09to belong to herbie hyde
00:48:11riddick bow seemingly lethargic
00:48:13in this latest effort to prove himself
00:48:15the best among the active heavyweights
00:48:17hyde's movement is really bothering bow because bow fainted
00:48:29hyde fell to the faint and bow still didn't go a punch
00:48:33you see both fainting and then but that's not following it up with anything after the faint
00:48:41hard right hand underneath by hyde
00:48:43solid punches by hyde
00:48:45he keeps going to the body and that's a good eye to a good idea too isn't it gill
00:48:55it certainly is going to help him out if the fight goes any kind of distance
00:48:59but again i think the pressure of bow just being there being on top of hyde is taking a little bit out of hyde
00:49:05he looked a little tired at the end of the last round remember it's only the second round of the fight
00:49:11you're right gillies hard left hand by bow
00:49:13hyde temporarily stunned by that one
00:49:15now herbie backs up and rick tries to follow it in
00:49:19staggered with that left jab
00:49:21very seldom to see that
00:49:23bow had better be careful now
00:49:27riddick bow coming alive and behind the right hand
00:49:31he gets hit with a hide right
00:49:33and that turns it right around
00:49:35bow in trouble
00:49:37hide looking to land one more clean shot
00:49:43long way to go in round three
00:49:45now bow steadying himself
00:49:47tries to set up the throw the jab again
00:49:53and down goes hide
00:49:55and richard steel
00:49:59is saying that it's not a knockdown
00:50:01there's no count
00:50:03but hide is clearly stunned
00:50:05he must have been hit with a very very short punch
00:50:07he's out on his feet
00:50:09he's out on his feet and in danger of getting hurt
00:50:11at folk and put something together
00:50:13down goes hide again
00:50:15there still hasn't been an official knockdown ruling
00:50:17now this one gets a count
00:50:19i had mentioned that hide looks tired
00:50:23he looks exhausted now
00:50:25and it's only the third round of the fight
00:50:29and now hide handles bow for the moment again
00:50:33lacing him with lefts and rights
00:50:35and as bow opens up to try to finish
00:50:37hide takes advantage and falls down again
00:50:39got hit with an uppercut
00:50:41right uppercut right on the foot
00:50:43one
00:50:45well that's three knockdowns
00:50:47except that the first one wasn't ruled a knockdown
00:50:49was not ruled a knockdown
00:50:51one to go
00:50:55hide still fighting back
00:50:57not grabbing and holding or covering up
00:50:59and he make it out of the round
00:51:03he does
00:51:05richard steel
00:51:07missed a knockdown
00:51:09big time
00:51:11this fight would be over
00:51:13if steel had ruled properly
00:51:15on the first knockdown
00:51:17this is your championship
00:51:19come on
00:51:21come on boys
00:51:23you gotta move
00:51:25skill has gone out the window
00:51:27in this fight
00:51:29this looks like a golden glove final
00:51:31f**k i'm fine for a championship
00:51:33where are you?
00:51:34where are you?
00:51:35don't f**king rid of the bar
00:51:36get lost
00:51:37come on
00:51:38come out
00:51:39you can beat this fella
00:51:40you can beat this kid
00:51:41he's leaving in your league
00:51:42come on
00:51:43he's leaving north of course
00:51:44move
00:51:45move
00:51:46start to rally like that
00:51:47bob and weave and block the duck
00:51:49here we're seeing what's happening here
00:51:55and you saw that
00:51:56let's see if we can get another glance at that
00:52:03i don't see where there was a knockdown
00:52:05it's impossible to see what happened
00:52:07and yet he got up groggily
00:52:09his nose bleeding
00:52:11i don't have an explanation for it
00:52:13we'll have to take a closer look as we can
00:52:15if this fight goes another round
00:52:17pretty amazing by punch that numbers
00:52:19bow landed only nine punches in the round
00:52:21hyde was on the canvas three times
00:52:23now hyde tries to put bow down
00:52:25and bow goes down
00:52:27while missing a punch
00:52:29and steel calls that a slip
00:52:31even though bow was clearly stunned
00:52:33by hyde's punches
00:52:37bow is just looking for one big shot now
00:52:39to end this fight
00:52:41he made that mistake against holyfield
00:52:43he just has to go back to work
00:52:45to work
00:52:47and let it happen instead of trying to make it happen
00:52:49we've had moments when both guys were wobbly
00:52:53but hyde is very tired at the moment
00:52:55i think you're right
00:52:57sometimes his first big fight
00:52:59the pressure of fighting a big man
00:53:01it can make you tired no matter how many
00:53:03hundreds of miles you've won
00:53:05or how many hundreds of rounds you've sparked
00:53:07well that's what i think really happened
00:53:09you can see he has plenty of courage
00:53:11his back and everything but he just
00:53:13that the pressure of the of the event
00:53:15got to him early in the fight
00:53:17whether or not he can relax now
00:53:19and get the second wind to come out who knows
00:53:21rounds three and four
00:53:23bringing a bizarre series of events
00:53:25to bow high
00:53:29in the circus of oddities that have marked
00:53:31bow's career here is
00:53:33yet another one to add to the legend
00:53:35and the aura
00:53:37weird stuff happens when
00:53:39riddick bow fights
00:53:45right on the button with the right hand by height
00:53:47and you know he telegraphs that punch but he
00:53:49still gets it in there
00:53:51it's by bow and then bow comes back with the left jab
00:53:53and hide has already shown us
00:53:55that he is from time to time stunned
00:53:57by riddick bow's left jab
00:53:59hide is not going to be able to keep this movement up
00:54:01for 12 rounds again
00:54:03he's going to have to hit bow and really hurt him
00:54:05because he's not going to have the stamina to go 12.
00:54:09another hard right hand over the top by hide
00:54:11he's game enough that's for sure
00:54:13but now bow lands two hard right hand shots
00:54:15hides out on his feet
00:54:17and there he goes
00:54:23third official knockdown
00:54:25fourth time hide has been on the canvas
00:54:27hey you okay
00:54:29give me a good
00:54:31steals going to let him keep going
00:54:33got a half a minute to survive or cry
00:54:35that's where bow should have landed a left hook to the body
00:54:37and bow throws him down
00:54:39and correctly richard steel calls it no knockdown
00:54:47hide trying to fight bow off with the jab
00:54:49but the bigger man now is really imposing himself
00:54:53on herby hide
00:54:55riddick stalking and exhausted herby hide
00:54:57and hide goes down
00:54:59from punches
00:55:01and from total fatigue
00:55:03i didn't see a punch there either
00:55:05the body punch larry wasn't much of a punch
00:55:07that's going to get him out of the fourth round
00:55:11herby hide showed us
00:55:13some real stomach as they say in britain
00:55:17some real courage
00:55:19to get through that round after the previous round
00:55:21come on
00:55:23when you're in the clinch
00:55:25don't put your head down
00:55:27bring your head forward
00:55:29let's see what happened here on this knockdown
00:55:45that was just a big clubbing right hand
00:55:47against a fatigue hide
00:55:49a left jab
00:55:51another one high in the head
00:55:53that looked more from fatigue
00:55:55than anything else
00:55:57well the best punch
00:55:59punches were the two jabs
00:56:00and they weren't really
00:56:01the kind of punches to put them
00:56:03because you put them on the canvas
00:56:04but he's a tired young man right now
00:56:06well
00:56:09give him this
00:56:10he doesn't fight like a preppy
00:56:12he's as game as he can possibly be
00:56:17but he's in danger of getting hurt now
00:56:19in round number five
00:56:20unless he can somehow get his legs back
00:56:22hide still trying to dance from side to side
00:56:25and
00:56:27moja stalking like a big cat
00:56:28now
00:56:32you know height has been down a couple of times on question
00:56:35the knockouts but
00:56:36but he there was no question that he went down
00:56:38i don't think he went down on purpose by any stretch of the imagination
00:56:42well he's been on the canvas five times
00:56:44four of them ruled knockdowns
00:56:47he's actually been on the canvas more than that
00:56:50he's been on the canvas six times
00:56:52four ruled knockdowns two ruled slips
00:56:54and the first one which was ruled a slip probably should have been ruled a knockdown
00:56:59the only shot that
00:57:01he sprayed hard right hands
00:57:03is to land a big solid punch
00:57:05because again he's not going to be able to go twelve rounds
00:57:07and out point Riddick Bowe
00:57:09get up
00:57:10get up
00:57:11get up
00:57:12get up
00:57:13get up
00:57:14get up
00:57:15get up
00:57:16get up
00:57:17get up
00:57:18get up
00:57:19get up
00:57:20another left hook
00:57:21three
00:57:22four
00:57:23and you wonder how many times Hyde is going to want to keep going for this
00:57:26I still think he's just working himself up to point
00:57:29and clean punching Gil
00:57:31yes it was
00:57:32the punches weren't really solid punches
00:57:34they were almost slaps
00:57:35but Herbie Hyde is again
00:57:37a very tired young man
00:57:39and because he's so fatigued he's in danger here
00:57:41and Seale should be thinking about that
00:57:43he just hit Bowe with a right
00:57:45right uppercut
00:57:46yep sure did
00:57:47he has him hurt
00:57:49Bowe is hurt
00:57:50and he's buying some time by
00:57:52manhandling Hyde back into the ropes
00:57:54well Hyde never realized that he had had him hurt Gil
00:57:58Hyde is trying to survive
00:58:04no Holly
00:58:05this is turning out to be Holyfield Bowe Reducks
00:58:12with a little bit more of a touch of the burlesque
00:58:14and not quite as much good boxing skills and technique
00:58:17these guys are
00:58:18again remind me of two Golden Glovers in the finals
00:58:22kind of fitting
00:58:23Bowe won four Golden Glove championships in New York
00:58:31Hyde may be getting a little bit of a second wind wave now
00:58:33seems to me
00:58:34either that or Bowe is going into energy deficit
00:58:42Riddick's activity level has gone down
00:58:45since the knockdown in this round
00:58:49knockdowns in three four and five now
00:58:53Herbie Hyde still hanging in
00:58:54just missed
00:58:57the long right and left
00:59:01could have done some damage
00:59:03now there's a solid right hand by Hyde
00:59:05oh break it
00:59:06break it
00:59:07break it
00:59:08break it
00:59:09break it
00:59:10there you go
00:59:11what is Bowe doing wrong
00:59:13not to take advantage of a really tired hurt opponent
00:59:16when a fighter is
00:59:18when a fighter is tired
00:59:20Larry it's very very easy
00:59:22to faint and hit him with left jabs
00:59:24but Bowe is looking to hit him with the home run
00:59:26ball every shot
00:59:28that's his big mistake right now
00:59:29he should just get back and use his experience
00:59:32and use that left jab
00:59:33another looking to knock down
00:59:34a light jab
00:59:35the right that landed more on the shoulder
00:59:37these were more pushes against fatigue
00:59:40than clean punches
00:59:42didn't even hit him with that punch
00:59:45he blocked the punch
00:59:46but he
00:59:47again he's so tired
00:59:49let's see where Hyde came in with the uppercut
00:59:51and hurt Bowe without
00:59:53without even knowing it
00:59:54right there you see Bowe's knees
00:59:56buckle from those two uppercuts
01:00:00it ain't it
01:00:01it ain't pretty but it's exciting
01:00:04it's a fight
01:00:05and we're ready for the sixth of a scheduled 12
01:00:08Harold Letterman
01:00:10how have you got it so far?
01:00:11Jim I gotta tell you
01:00:12Nevada judges are notorious for calling rounds close with knockdowns
01:00:16but I'm not a Nevada judge
01:00:18I had the third round 10-7
01:00:19because Riddick Bowe scored two clean knockdowns
01:00:21and had him out
01:00:22so I took away a point for each knockdown
01:00:24rounds 4 and 5 on the other hand
01:00:26I thought Riddick Bowe didn't have that much of an advantage
01:00:29and I only went 10-8
01:00:31but certainly he deserved an extra point for the knockdowns
01:00:33in rounds 4 and 5
01:00:35so I got it 3 rounds to 2
01:00:3748-43 Riddick Bowe
01:00:39Riddick Bowe
01:00:40yeah you scored the first two rounds for Herbie Hyde
01:00:41exactly
01:00:42he had to get the first two rounds
01:00:43as I did
01:00:44but I scored it a one point round to the fifth round
01:00:47well it's judges choice with all of the
01:00:53all the fighters who've been lying on the canvas
01:00:56for the number of times that Hyde has been on the canvas tonight
01:00:59again Larry you want to know what Riddick Bowe is doing wrong
01:01:01he's stalking the fighters stalking the fighters
01:01:03but he's not moving his hands
01:01:05moving his legs not moving his hands
01:01:07look how long it takes him to get off any kind of a punch at all
01:01:11you know two years ago Bowe looked as though he was rapidly becoming a supreme technician
01:01:16where did it all go Gil?
01:01:17come on get up no no no no
01:01:18Hyde down again
01:01:19come on come on come on
01:01:20come on give me a go
01:01:21Hyde's been using the canvas to really hide and rest
01:01:24another slippage
01:01:25hard right hand over the top
01:01:28that ought to be a knockdown
01:01:31and the towel comes in from Hyde's corner
01:01:33Steele ignores the towel
01:01:35as he should
01:01:37they're not allowed to throw in the towel to stop a fight
01:01:41and they have that rule in to keep them from making scores on gambling
01:01:45Steele kicks the white towel out of the ring
01:01:47a good move by Steele
01:01:49Hyde maybe not entirely in touch with what's going on at this point
01:01:54he's so exhausted
01:01:55I'd ought to try to take a round off here Gil
01:02:03just run stay away from her and hold
01:02:05not engage him if he can get away
01:02:07where did all of Bowe's skill and polish and ring intelligence go Gil
01:02:12maybe it went with that good living
01:02:14well in part it's because of the nature of the opponents he's been fighting
01:02:20that may be it
01:02:21will this be enough?
01:02:22go corner
01:02:23there's a count going
01:02:25five
01:02:26six
01:02:27seven
01:02:28eight
01:02:30nine
01:02:32ten
01:02:33Hyde's not going to make it up
01:02:35a rusty rough-hewn effort
01:02:39but Riddick Bowe gets his KO
01:02:41baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby
01:02:44well we were talking about how Riddick Bowe had to make a great impression in his fight
01:02:48to be recognized as the best heavyweight in the world and I just really don't think that he showed that much in this fight despite the numerous knockdowns
01:02:58a strong Herbie Hyde
01:03:01the awkward Mathis
01:03:05the running Larry Donald and here Henry Hyde who you can see weeping in his corner all difficult kinds of guys to fight awkward guys
01:03:17well let me tell you Larry
01:03:19Herbie Hyde is attached to his arms
01:03:21which means he landed a lot of punches and while he's hitting you he's still there
01:03:26you have to have the reflexes to count and Bowe did not seem to have those quick reflexes tonight
01:03:32I agree with you
01:03:33I agree with you
01:03:34I agree with you
01:03:35Riddick Bowe kneeling to pray
01:03:37I think what Riddick Bowe needs is a real challenge
01:03:42somebody who can really compete with him so that he can train in that way
01:03:47I think he's gone into these last three fights thinking he didn't have an opponent who was truly able to compete with him
01:03:54well I felt that Bowe was in great shape for this fight
01:03:58I told him how important the fight was but who knows what goes on in a fighter's mind
01:04:06and we're taking repeated looks here at the last of Herbie Hyde's many trips to the canvas
01:04:16and finally for this one Hyde kept the left knee on the canvas and simply declined to get up which was wise
01:04:23there wasn't much more you could do
01:04:26fascinating though that your mind's eye and your memory tend to tell you Gil that the Riddick Bowe
01:04:35who fought against Evander Holyfield in November of 1992 and who looked so good
01:04:40would have polished Herbie Hyde off easily in the third round with quick economical combinations
01:04:46no question about it remember even the second Riddick Bowe fight he almost polished off Holyfield
01:04:52with nice short combinations
01:04:55right now let's go up the ring announcer Michael Buffer for the official particulars of
01:04:59ladies and gentlemen
01:05:00referee Richard Steele reaches the count of ten
01:05:03at two minutes
01:05:05twenty-five seconds of round number six
01:05:07the winner
01:05:09and once again heavyweight champion of the world
01:05:13now two-time world champion
01:05:16Riddick
01:05:18Big Daddy
01:05:20Bowe
01:05:22and we repeat in our book here at HBO
01:05:27we don't recognize the governing body that awards that title that Michael Buffer is referring to
01:05:31so by our lights
01:05:33Riddick Bowe is not yet again a heavyweight champion of the world
01:05:37he's trying hard to work toward it
01:05:40eight-year-old brother Alan Hyde
01:05:43Hyde's little brother suffering from leukemia here tonight
01:05:46here tonight
01:05:47to watch his lights hero fight
01:05:49and I think that
01:05:51that's probably the source of Herbie's tears
01:05:53Bill he really
01:05:54wanted to do something big for his little brother tonight
01:05:56well yeah there's no question about that
01:05:58blew him all the way over here
01:06:00you can imagine how the kid feels
01:06:01I don't know who would feel worse
01:06:02Herbie or the kid
01:06:03probably couldn't feel much worse than Herbie Hyde feels right now
01:06:13final punched at numbers
01:06:15you can see that Hyde was by far the more active fighter
01:06:19throwing 66 more punches in the fight than did Bowe
01:06:22he landed 41 more punches in the fight than did Bowe
01:06:25not a lot of defense played here
01:06:27Bowe and Hyde both landing half or more of their punches in the fight
01:06:32and now Larry Merchant stands by in the ring with
01:06:38the once and perhaps future heavyweight titleist Riddick Bowe
01:06:41one more time
01:06:42alright Riddick
01:06:43Riddick congratulations
01:06:45well thank you very much
01:06:46give us your overview of this fight
01:06:49it was a kind of awkward brawling entertaining
01:06:52but it seemed that you didn't do anything in the first couple of rounds
01:06:57you were still back there in the dressing room fixing your gloves
01:06:59and then all of a sudden there were all these knockdowns
01:07:02well I'll tell you that the experience proved to be a big factor in this fight
01:07:05and I knew her was going to come out and use a lot of lateral movement
01:07:07and I would eventually catch the winner which I did
01:07:09he headbutted me early in the fight
01:07:11and I just had to be real careful and pick my shots in
01:07:13I have to admit that at a certain point
01:07:15I got somewhat over anxious
01:07:17and you know I had to regroup
01:07:19did the long delay in the dressing room sort of quiet you down
01:07:22because you came in and you just
01:07:24not at all you know I'm usually calm cool and collective
01:07:26and that's how I am when I come in the ring
01:07:28but I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity
01:07:31and blessing me with the wind
01:07:32I want to say hi to my nephew Eric
01:07:34hey Eric see you soon man
01:07:36come on
01:07:37he seemed like an awkward fighter to fight
01:07:40he leaped in
01:07:41and did he hurt you?
01:07:42he seemed once or twice that he might have hurt you
01:07:44well he stunned me a couple of times to be honest with you
01:07:47I would have to admit
01:07:48Herbie Howard is much faster than I thought he was
01:07:51but I think the pressure itself
01:07:53it took its toll on him
01:07:54you could sense that
01:07:56that he was getting fatigued just from being here?
01:07:59oh I could look at him and see
01:08:00and I hit him with a bite and say
01:08:02sound like a little girl for a second
01:08:03and I knew if I applied the pressure like Eddie Fudge told me to
01:08:06eventually things would go my way
01:08:09why were you
01:08:11people were asking us
01:08:12why were you unable to finish him earlier
01:08:14when he seemed so hurt
01:08:15was it just that he was
01:08:17sort of lurching around the ring
01:08:18much the way Evander did
01:08:20Holyfield did in your first fight?
01:08:21you know you got to give Herbie credit
01:08:23he was in great shape
01:08:24and he was able to withstand a lot of punishment
01:08:26especially to the body
01:08:27which we anticipated
01:08:28we were going to work on his body
01:08:29but um
01:08:30Herbie was very courageous
01:08:31after being shook up
01:08:32and I thought the count was somewhat long
01:08:34and I thought the rapists had talked about earlier
01:08:36but you know what can you say
01:08:37alright
01:08:38alright what about next
01:08:39when are you going to
01:08:40fight an opponent that everybody says
01:08:42there's a real contest
01:08:44well let me ask you this
01:08:45what do you think about
01:08:46Jorge Luis Gonzalez
01:08:47I want to knock that big bum out
01:08:49because he talk too much
01:08:50and he think he's the champ
01:08:52and he ain't whooped nobody yet
01:08:54and if you say something smart
01:08:55I'm going to have to whoop you too
01:08:57you don't even want to know what I think of
01:09:00you don't even want to know what I think of
01:09:02I must admit that
01:09:03I don't think that tonight was one of my best performances
01:09:06but I think you know
01:09:07going right back into the gym
01:09:08and working on various different things
01:09:09that I can improve
01:09:10because I did get anxious
01:09:11and I should have just been cool
01:09:13and maintained my composure
01:09:14thank you very much Riddick
01:09:15you're always honest
01:09:16no thank you
01:09:17alright
01:09:18Rock Newman
01:09:19manager of Riddick Bowe
01:09:20Rock
01:09:21you tell us
01:09:22what the future
01:09:23the immediate future
01:09:24holds
01:09:25for Riddick Bowe
01:09:26and what your trip
01:09:28to that prison in Indiana
01:09:30is all about
01:09:31firstly I think tonight's performance was one
01:09:33that
01:09:34it's a good tough fight
01:09:35for Riddick
01:09:36it was a good tough fight
01:09:37and it's the kind of fight
01:09:38and it's the kind of fight
01:09:39where he did some things right
01:09:40and he did some things wrong
01:09:41and he'll go back in the gym
01:09:42before he gets back to the gym
01:09:43we will be visiting
01:09:44Mike Tyson
01:09:45in Plainfield Indiana
01:09:46Riddick wants to speak
01:09:48and also I would like to
01:09:49dedicate this fight
01:09:50to my homeboy
01:09:51Michael Bench
01:09:52back home
01:09:53and Mike
01:09:54this one's for you man
01:09:55we did it again
01:09:56we will be visiting
01:09:57Plainfield Indiana
01:09:58to see Mike Tyson
01:09:59Tyson and Bowe
01:10:00have become very friendly
01:10:01they have a lot of respect
01:10:02for each other
01:10:03in addition to the
01:10:04tremendous respect they have
01:10:05for each other
01:10:06there's a matter of
01:10:07in excess of $122 million
01:10:09that the two fighters
01:10:10could split up
01:10:11those things I will
01:10:12suggest to you
01:10:13will be discussed
01:10:14how realistic is it
01:10:16for him to go to
01:10:17for Tyson to come to Bowe next
01:10:19or
01:10:20is it really
01:10:21carved in stone
01:10:22that he will fight
01:10:23Gonzales next
01:10:24and then perhaps
01:10:25somebody else
01:10:26before Tyson down the road
01:10:27well I would say
01:10:28that we're going to
01:10:29go and meet Tyson
01:10:30we're going to be
01:10:31very deferential
01:10:32we're going to be
01:10:33very respectful
01:10:34not going to be arrogant
01:10:35at a certain point
01:10:36we'll see what Mike Tyson
01:10:37has to say
01:10:38how he feels
01:10:39when he wants to fight
01:10:40and from there
01:10:41we'll develop a strategy
01:10:42to put on
01:10:43what I think will be
01:10:44the biggest fight
01:10:45in the history of boxing
01:10:46in the meantime
01:10:47there may be the taking care
01:10:48of Jorge Gonzalez
01:10:49thank you very much
01:10:50Rock
01:10:51thank you
01:10:52alright Jim
01:10:53I'm going to see
01:10:54if I can get to Herbie Hyde
01:10:55and get his overview
01:10:56or maybe it's an
01:10:57under view
01:10:58of this fight
01:10:59be right back with you
01:11:00alright thanks very much Larry
01:11:01and with regard to
01:11:02the question of Mike Tyson
01:11:03of course Tyson
01:11:04is going to have
01:11:05all the options in the world
01:11:06available to him
01:11:07when he comes out of prison
01:11:08and it must be stated
01:11:09that whatever
01:11:10he chooses to do
01:11:12in terms of who he fights
01:11:13all the cards
01:11:14will be with him
01:11:15in any of those equations
01:11:16it'll be his choice
01:11:17not somebody else's
01:11:18Riddick is probably
01:11:19going to wind up
01:11:20fighting Gil
01:11:21against Jorge Luis Gonzalez
01:11:22here in Las Vegas
01:11:23on June 17
01:11:24now we saw Gonzalez
01:11:25on the undercard
01:11:26in an easy knockout
01:11:27against an outmatched
01:11:28fighter named Brian Scott
01:11:30while our audience
01:11:31gets a look at Gonzalez
01:11:32you tell us
01:11:33what a Bo Gonzalez
01:11:34look matchup
01:11:35is likely to look like
01:11:37too bad we don't have
01:11:38a film of their last fight
01:11:39the last time they fought
01:11:40you know
01:11:41Gonzalez won the fight
01:11:42that was when
01:11:43they were amateurs
01:11:44and Gonzalez was fighting
01:11:45for Cuba
01:11:46when they were amateurs
01:11:47and Gonzalez
01:11:48since he's been a professional
01:11:49has won all his fights
01:11:50but he hasn't been tested
01:11:51he hasn't been in the ring
01:11:52with anybody
01:11:53and it's very difficult
01:11:56to make an assessment
01:11:57of his fight
01:11:58with Riddick Bo
01:11:59Bo would seem to have
01:12:00a big edge
01:12:01with the competition
01:12:02that he's fought
01:12:03but Gonzalez
01:12:04is a big guy
01:12:05and Bo wouldn't have
01:12:06that size advantage
01:12:07he's enjoyed against
01:12:08other fighters
01:12:09like Herbie Hyatt
01:12:10and Gonzalez has a pretty
01:12:11stiff left jab
01:12:12which might present
01:12:13a test for Bo
01:12:14well you know
01:12:15Gonzalez is actually bigger
01:12:16than Bo
01:12:17Bo is 6'5
01:12:18Gonzalez is 6'7
01:12:19and he's got that
01:12:20snapping left jab
01:12:21and again Bo has proved
01:12:22in this fight
01:12:23that he is easy to hit
01:12:24whether a question
01:12:25of whether he can
01:12:26counter Gonzalez
01:12:27Gonzalez
01:12:28and Hurt Gonzalez
01:12:29remains to be seen
01:12:30that's likely to take place
01:12:31June 17 here in Las Vegas
01:12:32as for Herbie Hyatt
01:12:33he stands by now
01:12:34with Larry Merchant
01:12:35alright Herbie
01:12:36a brave fight
01:12:37you give us your view of it
01:12:39um
01:12:40I felt I had it a lot of times
01:12:41but Riddick was a big guy
01:12:43and um
01:12:44I'm 23 years old
01:12:45and a lot of people
01:12:47I was done for this fight
01:12:48and
01:12:49I'll be back
01:12:50it seemed to us at ringside
01:12:52and
01:12:53and
01:12:54Riddick Bowe also commented on
01:12:55that the pressure of a big event
01:12:57the pressure of a big guy
01:12:58coming across the ring at you
01:13:00made you tired
01:13:02brought in fatigue
01:13:03far beyond what the
01:13:05the action of the fight
01:13:06would have suggested
01:13:07I trained hard
01:13:09but here being
01:13:10in the confine
01:13:11here in Vegas
01:13:12that motivated me a lot
01:13:13I tried to box Riddick
01:13:15but he
01:13:16I didn't want to do
01:13:17what Larry Donald did
01:13:18I didn't want to run
01:13:19I knew
01:13:20I hurt Riddick
01:13:21I knew I could hurt him
01:13:22and I wanted to fight with him
01:13:23if I was boxed
01:13:24and the kick
01:13:25my gameplay
01:13:26Fred was telling me
01:13:27I might be alright
01:13:28I hurt him a lot of times
01:13:29if I try to finish off
01:13:30that was like my downfall
01:13:31that time I fought Michael Ben
01:13:32I didn't try to finish Michael
01:13:33I was
01:13:34a mover all the time
01:13:35jabbing moving
01:13:36so you found
01:13:37that you were quicker than him
01:13:38and you couldn't resist
01:13:39the temptation
01:13:40to go in and exchange
01:13:41I was quicker than Riddick
01:13:42but
01:13:43I hurt him with a lot of shots
01:13:44and
01:13:45and I thought
01:13:46if this guy
01:13:47is supposed to be one of the best
01:13:48everywhere in the world
01:13:49cause
01:13:50I
01:13:51I feel
01:13:52oh duh
01:13:53I lost
01:13:54but I feel I'm the winner
01:13:55I feel
01:13:56I feel
01:13:57I feel just
01:13:58just
01:13:59oh man
01:14:00Do you think he's the best heavyweight in the world?
01:14:02If he's the best heavyweight in the world
01:14:03I'm number one
01:14:04I'm telling you
01:14:05I'm number one
01:14:06I'll be back stronger
01:14:07I'm 23 years old
01:14:08he's like my first
01:14:09lost
01:14:10and I wanna fight again next month
01:14:12and I hope Barryham
01:14:13my manager's got me a rematch
01:14:14cause I know I can beat him next time
01:14:16thank you very much
01:14:17thank you very much
01:14:18and thanks for a good show Jim
01:14:19alright thanks a lot Larry
01:14:20what about Herbie Hyde
01:14:21and his future in the division Gil?
01:14:23you know
01:14:24at any time I had a fight
01:14:26a loser fight
01:14:27he'd come back to the dressing room
01:14:28and he'd say to me
01:14:29you gotta get him for me again
01:14:31and I used to always have him
01:14:33you just had him
01:14:34and uh
01:14:35that's
01:14:36he just had Riddick Bowe
01:14:37that's more or less
01:14:38what this is about right now
01:14:39right away he wants a rematch
01:14:40but he just had his shot
01:14:41alright
01:14:42well we'll wait to see
01:14:43what happens to Hyde
01:14:44likely he made some friends
01:14:45here in the United States
01:14:46and uh
01:14:47we'll get a chance to fight against
01:14:48some of the numerous
01:14:49other heavyweights
01:14:51that linger around the title scene
01:14:52at this moment
01:14:53don't you think?
01:14:54oh yeah absolutely
01:14:55there are a lot of good young heavyweights
01:14:56around today that uh
01:14:57I'd like to see Herbie uh
01:14:59Hyde fight for example
01:15:00our guy that we really like
01:15:02is Courage Shabalala
01:15:04Courage Shabalala
01:15:05that's right
01:15:06we'll promote him one more time
01:15:07he's gonna appear here on HBO
01:15:08coming up sometime later on this summer
01:15:10Gil thanks for working with us again
01:15:11we'll see you next week in Pensacola
01:15:13okay Jim thank you
01:15:14Larry Merchant
01:15:15welcome back
01:15:16any final thoughts on Riddick Bowe
01:15:17Herbie Hyde
01:15:18Billy Idol
01:15:19or any other subject that strikes your fancy
01:15:21well I think that uh
01:15:22my final comment tonight
01:15:23should be about uh
01:15:25this being the last heavyweight
01:15:26uh
01:15:27big heavyweight fight
01:15:28before Mike Tyson comes in
01:15:29before Mike Tyson comes out of prison
01:15:31I should make a
01:15:32couple of notes about Mike
01:15:33I think the real question about Mike Tyson
01:15:36is whether he's the spent bullet
01:15:38that Buster Douglas
01:15:40beat up five years ago
01:15:42and who then didn't look all that good
01:15:44in subsequent fights
01:15:46or whether he's a live round of ammunition
01:15:48ready to explode
01:15:50as though he's been reignited
01:15:52by his imprisonment
01:15:54will he do well?
01:15:55sure he'll do well
01:15:56sure he'll do well
01:15:57but perhaps it depends on how you define well
01:16:00perhaps it depends on who he surrounds himself
01:16:02he can win a title back
01:16:04surely
01:16:05there are so many of them around
01:16:07these days
01:16:08but recapturing that whirlwind force of nature
01:16:11he once was
01:16:12I think will be much
01:16:14much harder
01:16:15harder
01:16:16and finally this
01:16:17Mike Tyson was convicted of a serious crime
01:16:20he did his time
01:16:22he's
01:16:23he deserves
01:16:24the opportunity to come back in life as well
01:16:27as in boxing
01:16:28but I think there are some parasites
01:16:30and a lot of fools out there
01:16:32who are going to try to make him a victim
01:16:34or even a hero
01:16:36and that
01:16:37he isn't
01:16:38Jim
01:16:39almost inevitable in our present media landscape
01:16:42however
01:16:43alright thanks very much Larry
01:16:44before we have a final word on tonight's boxing
01:16:46a look ahead to upcoming programming here on HBO
01:16:49we want to bring you up to date on the situation involving American boxer Gerald McClellan
01:16:53who is still hospitalized in London
01:16:55but we called today and spoke to English physicians who tell us
01:16:58that all the news on McClellan now is pretty good
01:17:01he's coming along receding from medication
01:17:03awake some of the time
01:17:05responding with upper body movements to various stimuli
01:17:08he has his eyes open and seems to be communicating
01:17:11though not often verbally with the people around him
01:17:14and if you're looking for good news in the present boxing landscape
01:17:16how about this
01:17:17Gerald McClellan was once regarded as a likely future opponent for Roy Jones Jr.
01:17:21Roy Jones Jr. has announced that 5% of the total take from his fight against Antoine Byrd in Pensacola next week
01:17:28will go to the Gerald McClellan Health Fund
