Fin 2014, onze ans après son enlèvement, Alice Webster s'effondre, épuisée, sur la place du marche d'Eckhausen, une ville de garnison britannique basée en Allemagne. L'inspecteur français Julien Baptiste, qui avait mené l'enquête sur sa disparition en 2003, est chargé de retrouver le kidnappeur d'Alice. Celle-ci semble détenir des indices déterminants concernant le lieu de détention de Sophie Giroux, une autre disparue. Deux ans plus tard, Sam et Gemma, les parents d'Alice, ne se parlent quasiment plus. Quant à Matthew, le frère d'Alice, il est devenu un homme violent et renfermé. De son côté, Julien Baptiste se trouve en Irak, où il remonte une piste importante qui pourrait le conduire au kidnappeur des deux jeunes filles...
