00:00Townsend, she's currently D.C.'s Teacher of the Year and is one of the four finalists to be National Teacher of the Year.
00:05Congratulations. She's a Democrat from Hyattsville, Maryland.
00:08Senator, there's been a recent movement to minimize or erase the identities, experiences, and histories of diverse individuals and communities.
00:19Given these efforts, what specific legislative measures, reforms, and actions can we as educators advocate for
00:26to promote the inclusion of diverse perspectives and histories within academic curriculum?
00:31Look, I happen to believe that if we are going to do what we have to do, we have to understand history.
00:41We have to understand how we got to where we are today. I believe that very strongly.
00:46And there are some aspects of American history that we should be enormously proud of.
00:50There are some aspects, like in every other country on Earth, we should not be proud of.
00:55But to try to push slavery or racism or homophobia or sexism under the rug and say they never happen is a disservice to the kids of this country.
01:07If we go forward, we've got to know our own history, our strengths, our weaknesses.
01:10So, again, I think you have the right.
01:13I want educators in this country to be able to educate our kids about all aspects of American society, not just the positive aspects.
01:22Some of the specific examples are quite remarkable.
01:26The National Park Service, the Pentagon, at times have scrubbed their websites of references to Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, the Tuskegee Airmen.
01:34At one point, the DOD took down pictures of the NOLA Gay because it had the word gay in it.
01:40Can you imagine how crazy that is?
01:42You know, the NOLA Gay was the plane that dropped the A-bomb.
01:45And the word gay was there.
01:47They erased it.
01:48Some of these moves have been reversed.
01:50But President Trump is also now going after the Smithsonian, accusing them of, quote, divisive, race-centered ideology.
01:57Do you think the administration is trying to whitewash American history?
02:00Of course they are.
02:02I mean, that's what I just mentioned right now.
02:04Look, to be a strong nation, we have to be a well-educated nation.
02:09And to be a well-educated nation, we have to face the truth.
02:12And the truth is, as much as Americans, we should be extraordinarily proud of.
02:16You know, when I give speeches, I now should have studied this harder when I was in the sixth grade.
02:22But you got people back in the 1790s who wrote a Constitution.
02:25You know what?
02:25That was an extraordinary document for the 1790s.
02:28Talk about separation of powers, which Trump is trying to do away with.
02:32So there's so much in our history that we can be proud of.
02:34But like every other country, Anderson, there's a lot in our history that we should not be proud of, that we should learn from.
02:41You know, slavery and racism and sexism and homophobia.
02:45All right, that's nothing to be proud of.
02:47But we learn from those things.
02:48We overcome them.
02:51So do I think what he is trying to do is to say, oh, all things were wonderful, we're always the greatest country on Earth?
02:58Yeah, that's the kind of direction he's going.
