00:00This is your morning update for Wednesday the 9th of April, 2025.
00:05Brought to you by the Edinburgh Evening News.
00:09Traffic ban in part of Royal Mile from July.
00:12Traffic is to be banned from part of Edinburgh's Royal Mile from July to make it safer for pedestrians.
00:18The City Council says that in summer, the number of people walking through the lawn market, near the top of the Royal Mile, can reach 5,000 per hour, and the narrow pavements mean they are often forced onto the road.
00:28The lawn market is currently closed for road reconstruction, but when that is completed in July, a trial ban on traffic will be introduced.
00:38Travel discounts for events could ease parking problems.
00:41Discounted bus and tram tickets sold alongside tickets to major sporting and music events in Edinburgh could help ease parking problems around the city's stadiums, councillors believe.
00:50Talks took place last year between the Council and AEG, the company behind the new Edinburgh Park Arena,
00:56over the possibility of combined event and travel tickets to encourage the use of buses and trams.
01:02And councillors on the Transport and Environment Committee suggested at the time that the idea should be extended to football and rugby matches.
01:10Call for more money to fund pothole repairs.
01:13Edinburgh Labour MP Scott Arthur has called on the Scottish Government to give councils more money to mend potholes.
01:18In a speech in the House of Commons, he suggested SNP ministers could follow the example of labour at Westminster and set up a special repair fund.
01:27And he also used the opportunity to argue that England should follow Scotland's example with powers for councils to ban pavement parking.
01:34Scott Arthur said,
01:35I'm often ashamed of what they encounter on arrival, particularly the potholes that litter the city.
01:40It is not just in Edinburgh, however.
01:42Scotland's roads are in a horrendous state, with more than 400,000 potholes reported to local authorities since 2021.
