00:00Send in the next victim!
00:03How did you find that out?
00:06Rami, Lawrence. Hello, gentlemen. Congratulations.
00:09Hello, thank you.
00:11A film about sort of shifting expectations of one's self.
00:15And I read a little bit about how, Rami, you kind of liked the idea
00:18of seeing how you would fit into this kind of action hero type
00:21and this sort of routine.
00:23And it just made me wonder, with all the success that you guys have had
00:27and the possibility of kind of being pigeon-holed as actors,
00:30how do you see yourselves as actors, the type of actors you are?
00:34Because, Rami, you've got kind of this ethereal thing going on,
00:38Lawrence, authoritative, you sort of meet in the middle
00:41with this kind of enigmatic and sort of smart and intellectual kind of place.
00:47But how would you describe yourselves as actors?
00:51That's a really good question, and it's one that I have to tell you
00:55it's really important for me to avoid answering.
00:58Because it's very difficult to sort of see one's self
01:03as other people see you.
01:05Particularly when you're an actor, when you're in the business
01:08of doing something that allows other people to project
01:11their own stuff onto you.
01:13So with Charlie, his character in this movie,
01:15one of the things that's great about this amateur idea
01:18is that through his performance you get to imagine
01:22what you would be like in this kind of role,
01:25in this kind of situation anyway.
01:27For me, because I sort of traffic in authority
01:32and I've been assigned this sort of light mentor,
01:35dark mentor archetype as an actor,
01:38I know that's my contract with the audience,
01:41but that doesn't necessarily mean that that's who I am
01:46as a human being.
01:48It's part of what I do and what my trade is,
01:52but I can't see myself that way because I don't know everything.
01:59And I'm still curious enough to be interested
02:02in learning about things.
02:04Is there a power in that, you think,
02:06at people's expectations of you across life,
02:09but certainly as an actor when people are tuning in
02:12and they come up to the theatres and they have that expectation
02:16of what they're going to get from you,
02:18does that give you a certain level of power on set
02:21to shift those expectations and play around in a different way?
02:24I think we're always looking for interesting ways
02:28to approach a character that is subversive.
02:36When I'm preparing, I know for myself,
02:39I'm always looking for unique ways to delve into the mind
02:44of who that person is and discover characteristics.
02:47Every single one of us as human beings
02:50has a myriad of different emotions
02:54that they carry with them day in and day out,
02:57and just tapping into that from character to character
03:00is something that I find wonderful.
03:03I never knew what I was going to expect out of this guy.
03:06And you work with Lawrence,
03:08and that creates a multitude of other things
03:11that you get to embrace in acting on screen, off screen, on stage.
03:17All the things.
03:19You can't pigeonhole it.
03:21That's the other thing I think for both Rami and I,
03:25I would have to say, to answer your first question,
03:29that the thing that I would use,
03:33the word I would use to describe both of us
03:35is that we are unpredictable
03:40in terms of the characters we play.
03:43Yeah, we might play a particular archetype.
03:46As you said, he has an ethereal intellectual thing,
03:49I have an authoritative blah, blah, blah.
03:51But it's not like you know what to fully expect
03:59going to see a film with either him in it or with me in it.
04:02You expect that you'll get a good performance.
04:07We can guarantee you that.
04:09We'll come and give you the best performance we can give you.
04:12But we're not going to telegraph and say,
04:15OK, I'm going to play this kind of guy,
04:18and this is what you should expect.
04:20I think you both played light and dark so well
04:23that there's always, as I mentioned before,
04:25this enigma of not knowing which direction you're going to shift
04:27and when you're going to shift, if at all.
04:29Yes, that's right.
04:30I know I've not got too much more time with you,
04:32but obviously the name is The Amateur.
04:34You guys have been lauded and respected in your craft for so long.
04:37When was the last time you felt like an amateur,
04:40whether it was in acting or whether it was in another area of life,
04:43an interest that you have that you don't feel like you've exactly got to grips with?
04:49I'll tell you this, I'm an amateur when it comes to social media
04:54because I don't have any.
04:56That's a good point to have in this day and age.
05:01But I do know what a DM is.
05:03I just found out.
05:04How did you find out?
05:05That's a very dangerous thing to know.
05:12A little outside comment as well.
05:14Send in the next video.
05:20Yeah, I guess social media as well.
05:22I wonder if there will be a day where that won't exist anymore.
05:28Yeah, that's an interesting – I wonder too.
05:32Right?
05:33Yeah.
05:34It'd be nice if someone just pressed the big red button on that for a little while.
05:38Probably shouldn't say big red button in these difficult times.
05:41Gentlemen, congratulations on the movie.
05:43Thank you so much.
05:44I really enjoyed it and I'll be all the way there with you
05:46when TikTok and Instagram and whatnot go bye-bye.
05:50We can just have conversations again.
05:52That'd be nice.
05:53Really, wouldn't it?
05:54Might be easier to get jobs.
05:55Yeah.
05:56All right, guys.
05:57Take it easy.
05:58I've loved the time.
05:59That's going next.
06:00It's on one of those platforms.
06:01Have a great day.
06:03Thanks so much.
06:04Thank you so much.
06:05Nice to talk to you, baby.
