00:00The 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp was commemorated
00:07with a ceremony in the German city of Weimar.
00:10It was attended by the country's former president, Christian Wulff.
00:14In a speech at the event, he warned against radicalization and a worldwide shift to the
00:18right.
00:19I can now more clearly imagine how that could have happened back then, and that makes me
00:33stunned.
00:34It is frightening to me, so I consider it necessary that today's generations strengthen
00:43their commitment to our values, to act with courage and perseverance, so as not to allow
00:53the demons of the 19th and 20th centuries to return.
00:59Wulff also criticized the rise of anti-immigration sentiment, championed by the far-right Alternative
01:05for Germany party.
01:06The former president, who belongs to the Christian Democratic Union, called for active commitment
01:11to democracy and the preservation of humanity.
01:14The Buchenwald concentration camp was established in 1937.
01:18At its peak, the camp and its satellites housed close to 300,000 inmates.
01:23More than 55,000 of its prisoners were killed by Nazis or died as a result of hunger, illness
01:29or medical experiments.
01:31The camp was liberated on the 11th of April 1945.
01:40German equity markets have experienced their worst session since the outbreak of the COVID-19
01:45pandemic in 2020, triggered by US President Donald Trump's global trade tariffs announced
01:51last week.
01:53On Monday morning, the Euro stocks 50 fell 6 percent, following an equally dramatic downturn
01:59in Asia as well as the United States.
02:02The German DAX sank 7.2 percent, also marking its most severe session since 12 March 2020.
02:09Trump reiterated his commitment to eliminating US trade deficits, particularly with China,
02:15while denying any intention to fuel market turmoil.
02:33Europe's banks and industrial sector were the hardest hit by the sell-off.
02:38European policymakers reacted swiftly, with discussions underway on a coordinated retaliation.
02:44US President's Bologna adviser Elon Musk has said he hopes that the US and Europe can create
02:52a very close, stronger partnership and eventually establish a zero-tariff free trade zone.
02:59Musk said this in a virtual speech at Italy's ruling far-right legal party Congress on Saturday,
03:04adding that he had advised US President Donald Trump about a potential free trade zone.
03:34Musk's comment came after China hit back at the US with 34 percent tariffs,
03:49which caused markets to slide even further by margins not seen since the COVID pandemic.
03:54Meanwhile, on Sunday, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated the EU's commitment
04:00to negotiating with the US, while also saying
04:03it will defend its interests through proportionate countermeasures if necessary.
04:10Canada is urging Europe and the rest of the world to retaliate against Trump's sweeping tariffs.
04:16Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie told Euronews her country had no choice
04:21but to respond with $60 billion worth of counter-tariffs.
04:26Jolie says Europe and Canada need to defend themselves.
04:30Not only are we leading the charge, we're the country at this point that has
04:36imposed counter-tariffs the most against US goods. We're working with the EU. I had just
04:45a conversation with the EU Trade Commissioner, Sepkovic. We're working also with Asian partners
04:52and we'll continue to put maximum pressure.
04:55Jolie reiterating that Canada is the US's biggest trading partner
04:59remains confident that the American people are in disagreement with the White House's latest
05:05actions, as she believes they have a role to play in resolving the conflict.
05:09The only way for President Trump to back off on his trade war is for American people themselves
05:19to say it's enough. And they are the ones that can create the political pressure
05:25within their own system to make sure that that's the case.
05:28Jolie also discussed why Canada needs to ensure that NATO remains united,
05:33emphasising that geopolitical chaos would only worsen global tensions.
05:38We need to fight for our own interests, maybe on a trade war or making sure that we have
05:44a united NATO, because ultimately who is gaining from all the erosion of the international system
05:53or some tensions amongst allies, it is our adversaries, it is China and Russia.

07:55hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.

08:51One grandmother of a hostage has a message for Netanyahu.
09:17Later on Monday, Netanyahu and Trump are set to meet in Washington, D.C.
09:23Last month, Israel broke the ceasefire with Hamas by bombing Gaza after pressuring
