At the beginning of creation, when everything was covered in water, Lord Vishnu was resting in yoga-nidra (divine sleep) on the serpent bed of Sheshnag in the cosmic ocean.
From the ear of Lord Brahma, two powerful demons named Madhu and Kaitabha were born. They stole the Vedas from Brahma, plunging the universe into chaos. Helpless, Brahma prayed to Lord Vishnu for help.
Vishnu awakened and engaged in a fierce battle with Madhu and Kaitabha, which lasted for thousands of years. The demons had received a boon that they could only be killed with their own consent. Using his divine wisdom, Vishnu tricked them into granting him the boon to kill them. They agreed but added that they could only die in a place where there was no water.
So, Lord Vishnu placed them on his thighs (which were above the water) and slew them.
Symbolic meaning: Madhu and Kaitabha represent ignorance and ego, which can only be destroyed by divine wisdom and knowledge (represented by Vishnu).
