U.S. President Donald Trump has floated the controversial idea of deporting American-born criminals to El Salvador. In response to a reporter’s question, Trump said he would “love” to send violent repeat offenders, like subway pushers and career criminals, abroad if legal. Trump claims El Salvador could jail such offenders at a lower cost and called the offer a “great deal.” Critics are expected to raise legal and constitutional concerns over deporting citizens. Trump, however, insists he would only pursue the plan within the bounds of U.S. law.

00:00The President there said he would be willing to take American citizens in the federal prison
00:29population.
00:30Is that one of the ideas you're going to be discussing?
00:31Well, I love that.
00:32If we could take some of our 20-time wise guys that push people into subways and that
00:38hit people over the back of the head and that purposely run people over in cars, if you
00:43would take them, I'd be honored to give them.
00:44I don't know what the law says on that, but I can't imagine the law would say anything
00:49different.
00:50If they can house these horrible criminals for a lot less money than it costs us, I'm
00:55all for it.
00:56I'd only do according to the law, but I have suggested that, you know, why should it stop
01:01just at people that cross the border illegally?
01:04We have some horrible criminals, American grown and born, and if we have somebody that
01:10bops an old woman over the head, if we have somebody that is in jail 20 times and goes
01:18back and shoots people all over the place and then has a bad judge or a bad prosecutor
01:23that do nothing about them, all they worry about is politics, they don't worry about
01:27that.
01:28I think if we could get El Salvador or somebody to take them, I'd be very happy with it, but
01:34I have to see what the law says.
01:53I don't know what the law says on that, but I have to see what the law says on that.
