00:00shot, you know, and then the talker next to the mute guy, it just is such a great
00:04dynamic that they develop.
00:06Look Dumbo, I'm your friend.
00:08And when Timothy comes in and says,
00:10What's the matter with his ears?
00:12I don't see nothing wrong with them.
00:14I think they're cute.
00:16You just love him for that because he's being picked on.
00:18And it's something every little kid can relate to is, you know, we all have features that get picked on.
00:23And you really wish you had, you know, somebody to come up and take care of those bullies for you.
00:27He's just your ultimate buddy.
00:29And he's trying to make the world around Dumbo understand, look, this guy is a good guy.
00:33You know, just because he's handicapped doesn't mean he's bad.
00:36You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
00:39A bunch of big guys like you, picking on a poor little orphan like him.
00:44And it makes for a terrific contrast.
00:46You have this little, sweet, sad elephant, and then Timothy, who's the optimist,
00:50who said, we're going to show them, come on, you know, I'm going to help you.
00:53So they just make a nice team, a nice buddy team, those two.
00:57You're terrific.
00:59You just really appreciate the ones that are protecting him.
01:02So you like to pick on little guys, huh?
01:04Well, why don't you pick on me?
01:05Jumbo.
01:07You mean Dumbo.
01:09Dumbo.
01:11Bambi's mother is a very good mother.
01:13But Mrs. Jumbo really kicks it, you know.
01:15When her little kid is getting picked on, she goes to work and just starts throwing people around and rearing up.
01:21And you just love that elephant, you know, because she's protecting little Dumbo.
01:26She's probably even more naive and innocent than Bambi in some ways.
01:30And then she goes through almost more emotionally than anyone in the movie, too.
01:34I want my baby. She gets her baby.
01:36The baby gets torn from her. She gets locked away.
01:39So she's really going through tremendous emotion in this picture.
01:44You know, Elmar ain't crazy.
01:46She's just broken-hearted.
01:49All aboard! Let's go!
01:52One of the most beautiful trains in it that were ever animated.
01:55There are several animated trains in Disney films.
01:58But Casey Jr., that is a true personality.
02:04So just to have a train have a personality and a life is another interesting choice.
02:09What you can get away with in animation.
02:11That one shot of it coming into town when it's introducing.
02:14The storm clouds are coming overhead and it's coming into town with the water reflection.
02:19And that little red sort of flickering coals to the music.
02:23And it's sort of flashing to the beat.
02:25And just slowing down as it arrives into that town.
02:28It's just poetry, you know, sheer visual poetry. Just love that.
02:32You know, it starts out with a map of Florida and a little railroad train.
02:35And, you know, that whole Americana, the circus is coming to town kind of a thing.
02:41Which, although the circus is a European invention.
02:46The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey kind of adopted it and Americanized it.
02:52Well, to me, it's a very uplifting style.
02:55The colors are very bright.
02:57You deal with the folklore of the circus, clowns, acrobats.
03:02The whole world of the circus is very colorful.
03:05You know, I look at it too in historical perspective.
03:07Because the circus to us now, today, sitting here in the new millennium.
03:11Is kind of a romantic notion.
03:13You know, most of us have probably seen a circus.
03:15But it doesn't come to town every year like it used to.
03:18And if you lived on a farm and you didn't have a TV, which you didn't.
03:21You had a radio.
03:22And when the circus came to town, it was a big deal.
03:24Because how else were you going to see an elephant?
03:25How else were you going to see a tiger?
03:27One of the reasons I think I love Dumbo so much is it makes me cry.
03:30Every single time. Never fails.
03:33It's like turning on a faucet when Dumbo starts to shed a tear.
03:36Well, so do I. And so do millions of other people.
03:39Oh, I forgot to tell you.
03:41Why? We're going over to see your mother.
03:43I made an appointment for you. Didn't I tell you?
03:45Just like me. I must have forgot.
03:47Come on, get your hat.
03:49The all time sweetest scene in the world is.
03:51Little Dumbo going to visit mom in the middle of the night.
03:54And when they touch the trunks through that window.
03:58There is no scene like it.
04:00It is absolutely amazing.
04:02Of how you feel for those two at that time.
04:05But the animation on little Dumbo's face.
04:08With that trunk wrapping around him.
04:10You just want to bawl when you see it.
04:12It's just gorgeous. The look in that little eyes.
04:15Just blinking and those fat little cheeks.
04:17It just doesn't get any better than that animation.
04:20One of the absolute best moments in animated history.
04:23And her little trunk comes down and cradles him.
04:26In her arms, so to speak.
04:29And again, it's an elephant.
04:32But allegorically speaking, it's us.
04:34Because we felt that way.
04:36We felt like, oh man, we had a tough day at school.
04:38Or more recently, a tough day at the office.
04:41And you feel like, I really want to go home.
04:43And be cradled by somebody.
04:45To me, it's a movie that's got everything.
04:48Heart.
04:50Imagination.
04:52Humor.
04:53Great characters.
04:54Wonderful songs.
04:56And that eye popping.
04:58Unbelievable.
