The Abbasi Caliph Abu Jafar Al Mansur loves poetry so much and was very versed.
He can memorise any poem despite he's hearing it for the first time, he had a boy who can memorize the poem after hearing it twice (i.e. hearing from the poet and the caliph), so he would bring him to read it after the poet and the Caliph had recited it, also he had a maid (female servant) she can also memorize the poem after hearing it for the third time (after the boy and the previous two reciters), so he brought the boy, to assure the first poet (in the video) that the poem had been read before and that it was written.
He was doing this with all poets, and the poets always got disappointed and frustrated for missing the golden price assigned for the poem.
It was later reported to Asma'i. So, he said: “The matter is cunning and artifice”. He prepared a poem variety of strange words and meanings and he was wearing a dress like bedouins, he was not recognised by the prince and he said: “I have a poem that I want to present to you and I don't think you've heard it before. So the prince said to him, “bring what you have”. So, he recited a poem titled “whistling voice of nightingale” and after he finished reading the poem, the Caliph could not mention anything from it. Then he brought his servants, and he did not remember anything either, because he would memorise it after hearing it twice. Then he brought the slave girl, and she did not remember anything. The Caliph said to him: “I will give you the weight of the writing in gold, so bring what you wrote”! Al-Asma’i said to him: “I inherited a marble pole from my father, so I engraved the poem on it, and this pole is on my camel outside, no one can carry it except four among your soldiers”. So they brought it and weighed the whole box.
The vizier said: “oh Commander of the Faithfuls, I don't think it's anyone but Al-Asma'i” The Prince said: Stretch your veil oh Bedouin, the Bedouin removed his veil and he found that it was Asmai.
The prince said: “Do you do this to the Commander of the Faithfuls oh Asma’i”? He said: “Oh Commander of the Faithfuls, you have cut off the livelihood of poets”. The prince said: “Return the money oh Asma'i”! He said: “I will not return it”, the prince said: Bring it back! Al-Asma’i said: I will renounce (it by giving) it to you, but on one condition! The prince said: What is it? He said: “That you give the poets their rights for their sayings and their given sayings!”
