00:00The Thames is an absolutely remarkable place. It's drawn people to it for thousands of years
00:26and there's all those traces of the everyday lives that have just worked their way into the Thames mud.
00:31Twice a day that foreshore is exposed by the tide and the mudlarks are down there searching through the mud
00:37and they're finding these historic artefacts.
00:39It's brilliant, it's a dynamic place and there's always new discoveries coming
00:43that give us a new little insight into London's past.
00:46I knew this object was going to be a delight fairly soon after it was brought to us.
01:00I was really keen to clean it, I was begging Kate to let me have a go at it.
01:06When I finally finished the treatment it's just breathtaking, it's just beautiful.
01:11We couldn't just stop showing it to people and it has a beautiful line throughout as well.
01:17It would have been a very impressive object in its time and still is, I guess even more impressive now.
01:23Well the sort of received wisdom would be that mudlarks are very collegiate and friendly and
01:40oh you found anything, but I think underneath that there is some real deep rooted competitiveness
01:47and I say this speaking from my own experience.
01:52Lots of mudlarks go down in groups and have lots of friends down there.
01:55I personally am a lone mudlark and when I see other mudlarks there I find it stressful
02:01because all I can think about is what the hell are they finding that I'm not finding.
02:22.
