Archaeologists in Vienna have uncovered an incredibly rare Roman-era mass grave, possibly linked to Emperor Domitian’s Danubian campaigns.

00:00In the context of Roman war stories, there are no comparable finds of fighters, of dead.
00:29There are large battlefields in Germany, where weapons have been found, but that you can really find the dead, that is unique for the entire Roman history.
00:40We know that they were all men, they were all very tall, over 1.70m, they were between 20 and 30 years old, mostly, and they all have combat injuries.
00:50So they have the most diverse combat injuries, which speaks against a direction, but really a fight.
00:57So we have injuries from swords, from lances, blunt injuries, sharp injuries, and this inhomogeneity really speaks for a battle.
01:20With this, we have the unique chance to investigate soldiers, Roman soldiers, but also Germanic fighters, Germanic warriors, to reconstruct the life stories of these people.
01:33And that is really something unique, which allows us to gain completely new insights into Roman times, into the first century, into the relationship between Romans and Germans.
