00:00If this is how the magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit Myanmar,
00:08what if the Big One hit the Philippines?
00:11This is the magnitude 7.2 earthquake in West Valley Fault
00:15that could hit Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
00:19According to PHIVOX, it is estimated that up to 50,000 people will die.
00:24The Big One you will see are the expected ground shaking in Metro Manila
00:29is intensity 8 and also we expect residential buildings
00:36around 12-13% would sustain heavy damage.
00:4310-30 storey buildings around 11% heavy damage
00:49and then 30-60 storey buildings 2%.
00:52And expected casualty would be around 33,500.
00:57And there are injured around 100,000.
01:01And then additional deaths by fire around 18,000.
01:05The people are having a hard time standing.
01:08That's why the Department of Transportation is continuing
01:11inspections and retrofitting the infrastructure as part of the preparation for the Big One.
01:15They installed seismic monitors.
01:19We will know how strong the earthquake is
01:25so that we can know if we need to evacuate or not.
01:29We need to inspect it regularly.
01:32And the other installations, other infrastructures,
01:36need to be retrofitted quickly.
01:41There are also regular earthquake drills
01:43so that we can know what to do and not panic if there is an earthquake.
01:47Of course, the cover and hold is there.
01:49Then it will go to the nearest evacuation center.
01:54Stay away from buildings or debris that can fall.
01:59Don't leave your belongings.
02:00But to be honest, the category of the Big One is not the biggest one
02:05because there are stronger earthquakes that can hit the country.
02:09The earthquake generators that we have are capable of generating higher magnitude earthquakes.
02:17For example, in Gabaldon, the Philippine coast,
02:20in Gabaldon, we expect a magnitude 7.9 earthquake.
02:25In the Philippine Trench, it will affect Eastern Samar
02:28and it can produce 8 to 9 meter tsunami waves.
02:33In the Manila Trench, it's also capable of generating a magnitude 8.2 earthquake.
02:38In the history of the country,
02:39magnitude 8.1 earthquake in Cotabato was one of the most devastating in 1976.
02:458,000 people died.
02:47And that was, again, it produced a tsunami.
02:51It happened past midnight, so maybe there were still a lot of people sleeping.
02:56And in just five minutes, the tsunami wave arrived.
02:58So our countrymen were not able to evacuate immediately.
03:04For those who are in other coastal areas, drop, shake, and roar is what you should be concerned about.
03:10If you can feel a shaking that you can't stand,
03:12and then if you discover that there is a, or if you can notice that there is a sudden drop of sea level,
03:19and there is a roaring sound or a roaring voice coming from the sea,
03:23then you have to evacuate immediately to a higher place because a tsunami can occur.
03:29In the end, we must always be prepared, especially the houses and houses that we are building.
03:35The earthquake was not fatal.
03:38It's the collapse of human-built structures, such as buildings, walls, bridges that may claim lives.
03:45So we really have to make sure that we follow the building code.
03:49Earthquakes are random events and they cannot be predicted.
03:52So again, I will reiterate, the best course of action is always preparedness.
03:57The Office of Civil Defense also called on the public to follow the building code,
04:01especially those who are building houses and houses.
04:04I hope that we follow the building code and not short-cut the construction and occupancy permits.
04:13Local governmental units, we demand that their building officers conduct inspections if possible.
04:27And they should be strict in giving permits for the construction of buildings that may not be that strong.
