With millions spent on cycling infrastructure around Wales, and Cardiff being a big beneficiary of that, we’re asking people if they think we need more to encourage people on their bikes, or if it’s more of a hazard.

00:00There's been a big push in recent years to get people on their bikes across Wales.
00:06Millions of pounds have been put into cycle lanes around Cardiff and cities and towns
00:09all across the country.
00:10But as you can see behind me, there's plenty of cars, and maybe you might spot a handful
00:14of cyclists if you wait round long enough.
00:16That's totally different to other places, especially like on the continent, where cycling
00:20is a fundamental part of some cities like Amsterdam or other European capitals.
00:25Here in Cardiff it just simply isn't part of the city's consciousness, even with the
00:28increased infrastructure for cycling.
00:30So is it worth investing, or is that money better spent elsewhere?
00:34The thought process behind putting more cycle lanes is great, and I'm always up for more
00:39cycle lanes for sure.
00:40But I do think there's an issue, I don't know, when I cycle through the middle of town here
00:44by the castle, there's like times where traffic will just come out of nowhere, I don't know,
00:49it seems that they're not quite linking up yet, it's a little bit dangerous still.
00:54But it's all heading in the right direction, I don't know, I don't know how much is possible
00:59I don't think so, I think if people want to get on their bikes they will, it's as simple
01:03as that, you know.
01:05Maybe in the city centre itself you could have scooters and bikes to make it easier
01:10with regards to parking and that sort of thing, but I think in general if you want to get
01:14on your bike you can get on it.
01:15Well 100%, if there's more of it then I don't see why people wouldn't, and I mean personally
01:19I drive so it wouldn't really be for me, but I'm for it.
01:23It's easier for travel around, because you don't really have, you can't park anywhere
01:27around here, so I think if you're on a pushbike, if they had more areas where you could just
01:30put a pushbike up again, it would be safe, there would be no problems there, but there's
01:34not so much of a pen drive, you know.
01:37What do you think would encourage people on their bikes more, is it better cycle lanes?
01:40Better cycle lanes, yeah.
01:41There's a more better way at the front as well, we can't choose, can we?
01:45The Netherlands is like the perfect example isn't it, I mean I've never got to visit,
01:49but everyone who comes back says it's like cycling is king over there, and it's just,
01:53just everyone, I don't know, everyone seems happier because of it I think as well, you
01:56know, the physical exercise that you're kind of doing will just clear your mind and things,
02:00if you're having a bad day, driving into work instead of, you know, cycling into work instead
02:03of driving into work, you know, it just clears your mind a little bit more.
02:06Cycling of course has its pros and cons, it's cheaper than driving, more environmentally
02:10friendly than driving, and it's usually easier to find parking, but some people aren't convinced
02:15and think it's more of a hassle and a hazard.
02:17No I'd get the cyclist out of the road, honestly, get the cyclist out of the road, dangerous.
02:23As a young driver, most of my access is decayed from cyclists, so keep the cyclist out.
02:29Cycle lanes are good, but you've got these speed freaks, the full speed freaks, right?
02:37They don't give a damn about lights, there's other people who don't give a damn about lights,
02:44or people crossing the roads.
02:47Now when I was younger, much younger, they had a thing called cycling proficiency.
02:54A lot of these cyclists of today would fall flat on their face.
