00:00In the 19th century, an American doctor arrived in Siam, not knowing he would change its medical
00:06history forever.
00:07His name was Dr. Dan Beach Baddeley, and his work helped shape modern healthcare in Thailand.
00:13When he arrived in 1835, most treatments were based on tri-channel healing.
00:18Dr. Baddeley introduced Western medicine, performing Siam's first modern surgery by
00:22removing a tumor, something never done before in the country.
00:26He also promoted smallpox vaccinations, protecting people from a disease that had killed many.
00:32Today, his impact is still felt.
00:34The Baddeley Building at Bangkok Christian Hospital honors his work, and the medical
00:38practices he introduced remain part of Thailand's healthcare system.
