Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday launched a new nuclear-powered submarine, Perm, armed with hypersonic Zircon missiles. The vessel, named after a city in the Urals, was launched via video link to the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk.
The Perm is the first nuclear submarine to be equipped with Zircon cruise missiles as standard. These missiles have a range of 1,000 km and can travel several times faster than the speed of sound, making them difficult to intercept.
The Perm is part of Russia's Yasen-M class of submarines and the sixth in the Yasen series. It was laid down in July 2016 and is the fourth serial submarine of the project. The lead vessel, Severodvinsk, was commissioned into the Russian Navy in June 2014.
