Located in the north of France, the Suzi Handicap Animal shelter takes in and cares for animals that are disfigured, have been abused or even tortured. "We often hear people say here that we are a centre with only monsters. And I find that very hard because, for me, they are the most wonderful in the world," says founder Stephanie Lisicki.

00:00Don't worry.
00:13Betty is her friend.
00:19No, no, no. I was just asking.
00:21The animals here come from all over the world.
00:36Cats, dogs, horses, farm animals.
00:38They come from all over the world.
00:40Unfortunately, we have more than 80% or 90% of the animals
00:43that are taken for abuse.
00:45And then we have a small part of the animals
00:47that are injured or born disabled.
00:50But unfortunately, it is still too little compared to abuse.
01:03Here is a small tumor that grew.
01:06What do you think?
01:07It's good, isn't it?
01:09They forget to eat, they forget to drink.
01:11It's like humans, but ...
01:13Because with humans, there is an operation that can be done.
01:16I have a big baby,
01:17who has been there for three and a half years now,
01:19almost four years.
01:20But what he does is that,
01:21despite the fact that he has no feet,
01:22he has no life.
01:24A little too many faults.
01:26A little too many faults.
01:32Never at the beginning,
01:33when we created this association,
01:35I would never have believed
01:36that there were so many animals abused.
01:38In relation to health problems,
01:40accidents, OK.
01:41But on the other hand, pure and hard abuse,
01:43it is true that we see it quite regularly.
01:45And that hurts very, very much.
01:47We will never get used to it.
01:48We can't get used to it.
01:51It's all the time.
01:52It's seven days out of seven.
01:53There are no holidays.
01:54It's been 11 years.
01:55Stephanie took us a week off.
01:56In 11 years, it doesn't stop.
02:04I don't know if you can see it.
02:06Her little nose.
02:16We often hear people say
02:17that we are a center with only monsters.
02:19And I find that very hard
02:20because for me,
02:21they are the most wonderful in the world.
02:23I don't see where the monsters are.
02:24I think more that the monsters
02:25are the people who torture them
02:26and mistreat them.
02:45And in addition to that,
02:46they destroy the hotel.
02:47That's what we're talking about.
