The rail operator has been behind the nature haven in the city.

00:00This is Parsons Carr Nature Reserve on the edge of Doncaster, a really unusual place
00:13for wildlife with the inland port behind us and the M18 motorway and arable fields.
00:19This is 104 hectares of wetland, grassland and woodland habitat which is great for lots
00:24of different wildlife.
00:27It doesn't feel like you're surrounded by industry, even though you are.
00:31Today we've been working with volunteers to do some tree planting, we're creating a new
00:36long hedge row which is good for lots of different species like mammals and birds and things
00:40like that.
00:41Yeah, we've got about 1,500 to do haven't we today?
00:45It's nice to see that those that we did last year have took us well.
00:49Full of all the wildflowers when they all come up from the cover crop, it's going to
00:52be really pretty.
00:53It's nice to be in something like this project from the start.
00:58It improves the connectivity for mobile species, so it builds their resilience and makes them
01:03more able to combat threats that they might face in today's world like climate change
01:08and things like that.
01:09We're going to need some big holes in a minute mate, roots on them.
01:17I've been volunteering about two years now, so to be given the chance to come out and
01:22do something useful.
01:23It's better than being stuck in the house all the time isn't it?
01:25Far better.
01:26So yeah, absolutely perfect for me this.
01:29Quite a lot of wildlife around here, it's really good to see.
01:34It is a bit of a gem this.
01:38I enjoy getting out into nature, I like to give a bit back and it's nice to come back
01:45and actually see it progress and grow.
01:52What we really want to do on here is create lots of different types of habitats.
01:55So we've got the hedgerows, but we've also got ponds, which is good for different species
02:00and it increases the diversity of what's actually on site.
02:04LNER have funded the ponds, without that money we wouldn't be able to increase the diversity
02:09of the habitats that we have here on site.
02:11They've funded some community elements, so some benches and some interpretation.
02:19And they've funded the trees which we've been planting today with volunteers, so they're
02:22creating a lot of additional habitat.
02:25This is a bit of a blank canvas, so it will change from what is ex-arable to hopefully
02:31a vibrant, thriving place for species and wildlife.
