Thanks Ishq FM for the footage!
Transcript
00:00I think I'll have to delete my Twitter account.
00:06No, but I want you to have that.
00:08We want to hear Swaraji.
00:09Yeah, so then you have to be prepared for all the abuses.
00:13Absolutely.
00:14Because having an opinion means that people will feel that
00:17you're saying this, now we'll question you on it.
00:20Defend yourself.
00:30Swara, Bollywood people want you to stay away from your favourite word, feminism.
00:48You've been extremely vocal and very, very vociferous about your opinion,
00:53so how difficult is it to be an opinionated woman in today's times?
00:58I think it's the easiest today.
01:03I think that having an opinion is considered to be a good thing.
01:13It's a sign of strength.
01:15Today's strong woman.
01:18Today's powerful woman.
01:20That kind of thing.
01:21And I think that in popular culture, generally speaking,
01:25what you think, you're telling the truth.
02:26Absolutely.
02:27So, how can we fix this?
02:29There's no quick fix solution.
02:31I feel that our civilization is structured on a patriarchal basis.
02:41Human society begins with the exchange of women amongst the kins.
02:46Since the time of one human being.
02:48So, that's what our civilization is based on.
02:51The whole notion of family is one in which the father is the head of the family.
02:56He's the bread.
02:57He's the bread.
02:58That's the control.
02:59The lineage is passed on from the male.
03:01Which is fine.
03:02That's how we've evolved.
03:04But I think it's important to be conscious of it.
03:06And I always feel, it's kind of sad almost,
03:11that all the isms, like the fight against racism,
03:15or the fight against class inequality,
03:18or the fight for freedom in India,
03:21were all a little easy.
03:23Because the enemy was an identifiable person.
03:27Either he was British, or a white supremacist,
03:30or a landlord.
03:33The fight for feminism,
03:37you have to fight the people you love the most.
03:43Your father, your brother, your boyfriend, your husband.
03:47That's our first experience of patriarchy within the family.
03:51And sometimes we don't realize it.
03:53And they don't realize it either.
03:55When my father comes home,
03:57he'll always tell his daughter to give him water.
04:00Give him water, make him tea.
04:01So many boys do that.
04:03Even though I've never done anything in my family.
04:06I don't think so, but I think things are changing.
04:08I think women are expressing themselves now.
04:11They're standing up for their rights.
