00:00I couldn't live at peace with myself.
00:23For a long time now,
00:26I have been uneasy.
00:29I have been distressed,
00:32and I have not been able to reconcile
00:37all the views I have held
00:39these many years of my adult life
00:42with what was happening in the country today.
00:45While there were small differences,
00:48I kept silent.
00:50Even when I saw
00:52that the drift of the government
00:54was going in a direction
00:56which was painful to me,
00:58and I thought,
00:59not in the interest of the country,
01:01I remained quiet.
01:07But when the emergency was declared,
01:10and one by one,
01:12I saw the manner in which
01:14the things which are considered essential
01:19for the life and growth of democracy
01:22were being suffocated.
01:23The institutions on which democracy is based
01:26were being downgraded.
01:28Then I felt that
01:30I couldn't live at peace with myself.
01:32I may have one year to live,
01:34I may live a few more years.
01:36But I could not live at peace with myself
01:39if I did not come out
01:41and demand that
01:46the corrosion, erosion,
01:48whatever you like to call it,
01:50that was taking place, be stopped.
