00:00Good afternoon. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor for Sussex Newspapers.
00:05Lovely to speak again to Grace Maloney. Nine years after that stage debut in Chichester with
00:10The Country Girls, you're back on the south coast with Little Women. And you're saying you've got,
00:15well, by the sound of it, a pretty demanding, exhausting character to play, who does,
00:19Jo, wear her heart on her sleeve, doesn't she, as you were saying?
00:23Yes, she does, massively. It's going to be a big challenge. It's going to be physically
00:32exhausting, I think, in a brilliant way. And I imagine that my fitness levels over the tour
00:41will be great. So it will go up and up and up, I hope. Or yeah, I'll sort of have to,
00:46and it's all in a corset as well. So it kind of, just to add to the physical exhaustion,
00:51I'll also be completely restricted. So tell me about her character then. What is she like?
00:58Jo is the tomboy. She wants to write. She wants to be a writer. She wants to make her own money.
01:05She doesn't want to get married. She wants to be a boy and she wishes that she was born a boy.
01:12And she finds it hard to weigh up the duty of what she's meant to do in her life versus the
01:22passion and her dreams and her desires. And she is full of energy. She is like a live wire. She
01:31doesn't stop fizzing around. And yeah, she's brilliant.
01:38And she barely leaves the stage just to make it all the more complicated and demanding.
01:43It doesn't. Yeah, time sort of moves around her, which is, I think, really satisfying to watch and
01:51satisfying to be in as well. We kind of use music and movement and our voices, like we sing, to
02:00show the passing of time physically without having to leave the stage, come back on the stage,
02:06lights down, lights up, like we're doing it in quite a magical way. But it means that I don't
02:12get to go off and have a sip of water. So, yes. Isn't it easier to stay on stage than to keep
02:18going on and off? Actually, yeah, I have been speaking to some of the rest of the cast and
02:25sometimes when you have less to do, you kind of, you can go off stage and then be like,
02:32oh gosh, here we are. What point are we at? Whereas I think it was sort of feel a bit like
02:36a roller coaster ride, like when I say that first line. Your mind is not the one. We've got to keep going.
02:43Yeah. Fantastic. Well, really lovely to speak to you. Good luck with the tour.
02:49Thank you, Brice. Thank you.
