Chris Miller, the author of "Chip War: The Fight for The World's Most Critical Technology," said China's efforts to build its own chip supply chain is stronger than ever, and that with U.S. President Donald Trump back in office, the international trading system is at the cusp of transformation. At an event hosted by Taipei-based think tank DSET, Miller said TSMC's continued unmatched leadership in making advanced chips puts the firm and Taiwan in a strong position.

00:05its own chips, something the U.S. sees as a threat to national security.
00:10Speaking in Taipei, Chris Miller says the geopolitical battle over the critical semiconductor
00:15industry will only grow.
00:17Without giving an exact time frame for when China might catch up to U.S. dominance in
00:22the technology, he says Beijing's progress should be taken seriously.
00:27Miller also says Taiwan remains the unmatched leader in advanced chip manufacturing, a position
00:32strengthened by TSMC's recent investments in the U.S.
00:36TSMC managed to put itself in a position of partnership with the new administration.
00:45President Trump was very supportive of TSMC in his remarks, praised the company, praised
00:53its technology, praised its centrality to U.S. AI supply chains.
00:58I think all those are wins for TSMC, I think they're wins for the U.S.-Taiwan relationship
01:04as well.
01:05I don't think the TSMC announcement solves every issue, but I think it does put the relationship
01:09on a much stronger foot than it might have been.
01:13Miller warns that Trump will likely still target Taiwan on other issues, like its trade
01:18imbalance with the U.S. and its level of defense spending, which Washington sees as too low.
