00:00Thank you Amazing Earth because I was able to try being a scuba surfer and it feels so
00:10good to go on a dive.
00:11You know, you're able to help nature.
00:12It's a bit challenging because you have a goal underwater.
00:13But do you know what's more challenging?
00:14Blackwater diving.
00:15Do you see the two eyes that are blinding and almost a dozen gills?
00:39Don't worry, this is not a Martian invader, this is the life of a Blackwater diver at
00:45sea.
00:46Award-winning underwater photographer, Mr. Scott Gutsy-Tuazon Sotongao Patakis.
00:52The jellyfish is actually feeding on tiny little shrimp, most likely krill.
01:01Uy, may pangaybay.
01:03May lalaban yata sa Best in National Costume Competition.
01:07That is a sub-adult crocodile needlefish.
01:11Normally, those fish, they stay at the surface and that's where they usually live and they
01:18feed.
01:28Oh, nagulat kayo, no?
01:30May buntot nga.
01:31It's called a fronima.
01:32It's a type of crustacean as well.
01:48Blackwater diving is basically diving in open ocean at night.
01:58It should be really deep.
02:23Almost everything was just, you know, memorable because, you know, it's, you don't know
02:29you don't get to see that stuff when you're doing just a regular night dive or especially, you know,
02:35or even a day dive.
02:36I'm really a big fan of jellyfish, so I love all sorts of jellyfish.
02:40Tubataha, one time we had, I had a tripod fish.
02:44The diamond squid is another fascinating creature that I really like.
02:51A lot of the larval fish that you see underwater during Blackwater is really interesting.
02:57There's really a lot of memorable creatures and, you know, I still haven't seen it all.
03:08You know, Anilao has really become, it's really, actually, I mean, it's so close and it's one of the best for me.
03:15Aurora Province, Pacific side's also nice.
03:18Every time I run trips to Tubataha, I always make it a point to do Blackwater there as well.
03:27Good buoyancy skills is the most important for me.
03:31If you don't watch your buoyancy, you can find yourself just drifting down to depths that, you know,
03:37that you probably shouldn't be at during, in the middle of the ocean at night.
04:03It helps a lot with the scientists because a lot of scientists don't actually get to go out in the field, right?
04:10And so the only thing is we're not collecting specimens but we're taking photos
04:14and scientists are seeing new types of behavior, seeing new types of species, seeing new types of relationships.
04:22So that's why a lot of the scientists have joined the Blackwater Photo Group on Facebook
04:29because they realize the advantage of being able to see all these photographs day in and day out.
