00:00But while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.
00:25How do I describe myself? I describe myself as a proud American.
00:30I am a proud American.
00:33I am a proud American.
00:36I am a proud American.
00:38My parents met when they were graduate students at UC Berkeley, back in the civil rights movement.
00:43And, you know, I joke, me and my sister joke, we grew up surrounded by a bunch of adults who spent full time marching and shouting.
00:50I am a proud American.
00:52I am a proud American.
00:54I am a proud American.
00:56I am a proud American.
00:59Our mother was the kind of parent who, if you ever came home complaining about something,
01:05the first thing she'd do is look at you and say, so what are you going to do about it?
01:12So I decided to run for President of the United States.
01:29There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools,
01:36and she was bused to school every day.
01:39And that little girl was me.
01:42I had this one leotard, long sleeves, and then we sewed fringe down the bottom of the arm, the sleeve.
01:50I had this one leotard, long sleeves, and then we sewed fringe down the bottom of the arm, the sleeve.
02:05Back in the day, I'd go down to the National Mall to protest the United States investment
02:22in apartheid South Africa.
02:25And I interned in the United States Senate.
02:29I chaired the Economic Society.
02:31I was on the Howard debate team.
02:33And I pledged my dear sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.
03:03In my career, the conventional wisdom was that people were either soft on crime or tough
03:10on crime.
03:11But I knew we should be smart on crime.
03:33Our justice system needs drastic repair.
03:39Early intervention leaves room in our prisons for the violent criminals who should be there.
03:43I did it in San Francisco.
03:45As Attorney General, I can do it across California.
04:03There is work that we have done there.
04:19There's work that we have done around racial profiling and, in particular, implicit bias
04:23and racial bias in the criminal justice system and, in particular, in law enforcement that
04:27needs to be addressed.
04:44That's not my question.
04:45Not my question.
04:46I will repeat.
04:47Excuse me.
04:48I'm asking the questions.
04:49Hold ourselves to.
04:50Can you please answer the question?
04:52Can you think of any laws that give the government the power to make decisions about the male
04:57body?
05:00I'm not thinking of any right now, Senator.
05:22The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices
05:33to fight for our American values.
05:37That's why I'm running for President of the United States.
05:52On the issue of, and in the conversation with Vice President Biden, it was through
06:02the lens of that, which is that these segregationists pushed policies and really built their careers
06:11and reputations off of policies that were about segregation of the races in our country.
06:17And it had real consequence.
06:19The policy perspective that was opposed to busing had real consequence.
06:24I was that little girl and there are many others around the country who were those little
06:30girls and boys who were bused.
06:49It should not require a maiming or torture in order for us to recognize a lynching when
07:09we see it and recognize it by federal law and call it what it is, which is that it is
07:14a crime that should be punishable with accountability and consequence.
07:21I, Kamala Davy Harris, solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution
07:47of the United States.
07:48That I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States.
07:52Against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
07:53Against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
07:54I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter.
07:55The duties of the office upon which I am about to enter.
07:56So help me God.
07:57So help me God.
