00:00I used to think that if we just gave people a voice and
00:03And help some people connect that that would make the world a lot better all by itself
00:12But you know today when we look around our society is still very divided
00:16So
00:28Studies have actually proven that the more connected we are
00:31The happier we are and the healthier we are too, you know
00:35So that's why it is so striking that over the past few decades
00:39Membership in all kinds of communities around the world has been declining and in a lot of places by as much as one quarter
00:46If
00:49There are almost two billion people on Facebook
00:52And how come we've only helped connect a hundred million of them to two meaningful communities?
00:56Well, it turns out that that in the physical world and online most of us don't seek out communities
01:02So a little while ago, I started we started this project at Facebook to see if we could just get better at suggesting
01:09Communities that were going to be meaningful to you and in six months
01:12We've helped more than 50%
01:15More people join meaningful communities on Facebook than had joined them the whole history of the product before that. So now
01:22We're gonna set a goal
01:24We want to help 1 billion people
01:27Join meaningful communities. This is the power of the communities that you are all building
01:34You may think you're just creating a space for new moms or for bird watchers or for locksmiths
01:40But
01:42When you give people a way to connect and a sense of support it can lead to important changes
