When did haircuts become a political statement?
Transcript
00:00I'm not closing the store.
00:02If they arrest me,
00:04I have someone that will keep the store open
00:06because it's our right to keep the store open.
00:08I'm going to stay open until Jesus comes.
00:10Amen!
00:12Wow!
00:14Check me out!
00:30For heaven's sake, open the barber shops!
00:38Open the hair salons!
00:40We need haircuts!
00:42We gotta buy food!
00:44We gotta go to work!
01:31Your actions were selfish,
01:35putting your own interests
01:37ahead of those of the community in which you live.
01:39I have to disagree with you, sir,
01:41when you say that I'm selfish
01:43because feeding my kids
01:46is not selfish.
01:48I have hairstylists that are going hungry
01:51because they'd rather feed their kids.
01:54So, sir, if you think the law is more important
01:57than kids getting fed,
01:59then please go ahead with your decision,
02:01but I am not going to shut the salon.
02:30Shelby's free! Shelby's free!
02:36Thank you guys so much.
02:38I'm a little overwhelmed.
02:52In the state of Texas,
02:54no one can be put behind bars
02:57because they're not following an executive order.
03:00That includes the woman
03:02that we've been reading about
03:04with the beauty salon.
03:06She's free today.
03:07Good.
03:27I've always worked.
03:29I've never looked for handouts.
03:30I don't even know what they are.
03:32Somebody called me and said,
03:34well, why didn't you get on food stamps?
03:36Well, you know, I don't want food stamps.
03:38I want to work.
03:40I want to work.
03:41And this was the whole emphasis of this thing
03:43was for me, when our governor said,
03:45you know, we're going to have another 28 days,
03:47it knocked me to my knees.
03:49I couldn't take another 28 days.
03:51I had to get back to work.
03:56In Chiawassee County,
03:58which is where this barber's shop is,
04:00we have 196 confirmed cases of COVID-19 right now.
04:03We've had 13 deaths in that county alone.
04:06And we're going to have another 28 days
04:09to get back to work.
04:11So we're going to have to work.
04:13We're going to have to work.
04:15We're going to have to work.
04:17We're going to have to work.
04:19We're going to have to work.
04:21We're going to have to work.
04:23We're going to have to work.
04:26And the protections and the work that we've done
04:29is to protect the barber
04:31as well as all of his clients.
04:34And so that's why it's really important
04:37that we continue to be smart,
04:40to do this in incremental stages,
04:43to listen to the data,
04:45to ramp up our testing,
04:47and continue moving forward.
04:56Michigan, all of you business owners,
05:00you beauticians, you barbers,
05:02massage therapists, all of you,
05:05open up your shop.
05:16Open up your shop. Stand up and show up.
05:25It's time to open up the state, folks.
05:27We need to get back to work.
05:37My concern that if some areas, cities, states,
05:40or what have you,
05:41jump over those various checkpoints,
05:45that we're going to have to open up
05:47the state.
05:48We're going to have to open up the state.
05:50We're going to have to open up the state.
05:52We're going to have to open up the state.
05:54If we don't open up those checkpoints
05:57and prematurely open up
05:59without having the capability
06:01of being able to respond effectively
06:03and efficiently,
06:05my concern is that we will start to see
06:07little spikes that might turn into outbreaks.
