Mark Dunford appeared on PopMaster on Monday, March 24. He did quite well, scoring 30 points. But how would you have got on if you got the same questions? Mark asks the questions and reveals the answers.

00:00Hi, I'm Mark Dunford, editor of Sussexworld.co.uk, and yesterday I had the great privilege of
00:06going on Popmaster live with Ken Bruce.
00:09This is something I've been wanting to do for years, but sort of always held back, was
00:13always a little bit scared, didn't want to, but I try and play the game every day when
00:18I can live, but if not, I listen back on the app, keep a record of my scores, and always
00:23compare them with my colleague Steve Bone, and with Steve, he's always pushed me to go
00:27on.
00:28He went on in 2021 and did well, won the game, won the 3-10, but we agreed that if I ever
00:35got the maximum points, 39, or if I averaged 25 per round over the space of a week, then
00:42I would apply to go on, and in January I managed to do that.
00:45I got an average of more than 25 for the week, so I applied, and a few weeks later, which
00:51was yesterday, Monday March 24th, I got on and had the absolute honour to speak to Ken
00:56live on the radio, and I did quite well.
01:00My opponent, Tom Brighton, he got 21 in the first round, that put a little bit of pressure
01:04on me because I've always averaged about 21.
01:08In recent months, with the help of Steve Bone, and just keep doing the game, I've managed
01:13to get my average up to about 23, 24, and the odd 25, so yeah, I was a little bit scared
01:19about going on, but to get 30, which I did, I exceeded all my expectations.
01:24I've never got a maximum, I've got a 36 once or twice, and a few 33s here and there, but
01:30if I ever get anything over 24 or 27, I'm absolutely delighted, so really pleased, and
01:35what I want to do, yesterday I wrote a piece on Sussexworld.co.uk about my experience again
01:42on Popmaster, and I published the questions that I got.
01:45So today, what I'm going to do is reveal the answers to those questions, and see how you
01:49got on.
01:50Read the questions, I'll leave a little bit of space, maybe 5, 10 seconds, and then reveal
01:56the answer.
01:57So remember, there's a bonus round, a bonus subject, sorry, which is free questions, questions
02:023, 6, and 9, they're normally a musical clip on the radio, but I'm only going to play the
02:08one musical clip, because there's only one that really needs the musical clip.
02:13So you get 3 points for a normal question, 6 points for a bonus, a maximum of 39 points,
02:18so let's see how you get on.
02:20So the first question, the song Holiday was the 1984 top 40 debut hit for which superstar?
02:32I'd like to think most people got that, but you know what you know, and we always know
02:36that, so it was Madonna, of course.
02:39So the second question, what Phil Collins song has been number 1 in 2000 for Mariah
02:45Carey and Westlife, and in 2005 for Steve Brookstein?
02:54The answer is of course, Against All Odds, I got those two right, so I had 6 out of 6
02:59so far.
03:00The first bonus question, it had a musical clip, but it's irrelevant to the actual answer,
03:07so the question was, you're going to hear the first number 1 single by the band The
03:12Police, remember the subject was Cops and Robbers.
03:16The band consisted of Sting, Andy Summers, and which other member?
03:25And the answer to that was Stuart Copeland, which luckily I knew.
03:29So there I had 12 out of 12 after 3 questions, so I was on a high and confidence was building.
03:35So question 4, was the song on my radio in the late 70s was a hit for which group?
03:42Now this was the first question I got wrong, so I said the real thing, I didn't have a
03:50clue, never heard of the song, I'd probably know it if I listened to it, but I didn't
03:54know the answer, but the answer was The Selector, so that was a new band, I don't think I'd
04:00even heard of The Selector before, so there was a blot on my copy book for the first one
04:06I got wrong.
04:07So question 5, and I got this one wrong, and I got this one dramatically wrong, because
04:12I sounded quite confident on the radio when I listened back, it was in which year were
04:17these songs all top 10 hits?
04:20And it was Strong by Robbie Williams, Better Best Forgotten by Steps, and No Scrubs by
04:25TLC.
04:29Now what I did was I heard the words TLC and I instantly thought Waterfalls, and I know
04:35that was a hit when I was in college on the Crazy Sexy Cool album, and so all I could
04:41think was TLC, Waterfalls, and I said 1996, it could have been 96 or 97, but I got it
04:48wildly wrong, I should have thought about it a bit longer, and it was 1999, so I was
04:55three years out, I didn't even get the one year out, which you always want to hear when
04:58you're on Popmaster.
05:01So I was still on 12 points after five questions, so I took a little bit of a hit there, but
05:06the next song is another bonus, remember Cops and Robbers?
05:10So Fergal Sharkey released a song called You Little Thief, and it was a follow up to his
05:16only number one, What Was That Called?
05:20And luckily on the radio you get the music playing so you get a little bit of time to
05:24think about this one, and I had the tune in my head for Fergal Sharkey, the other hit
05:28he had, and I was singing it, and then it suddenly came to me by the time the music
05:35had finished, so it was A Good Heart, which was correct, so I got another six points there,
05:40so that took me to 18 points, which was good.
05:43So question seven, this is back to three pointers, having had number ones in the 60s and 70s,
05:51the song You Win Again was the only number one of the 80s for which group?
05:59That was of course the Bee Gees, so I got three points there, so I think that took me
06:04up to 21 points, so I'd already levelled with my opponent there, so that was good, so we
06:09could be going to a tie break, but number eight, luckily it was a question about one
06:14of my favourite albums, or a song from one of my favourite albums.
06:20So the question was, what was In My Pocket, according to Alanis Morissette's single
06:26in 1995?
06:29So the album was Jagged Little Peel, one of my favourite albums ever, every song is
06:34an absolute banger on that album, the song is Hand In My Pocket, so I got that one correct,
06:39so that took me to 24 points, and the next bonus we need an audio clip for, which I'm
06:45just going to play 10 seconds of.
06:48The question is, we're going to play a song from 1983, please name the song and the artist.
07:08Recognise that song?
07:10Luckily, as I said on the radio, I'm normally someone who doesn't like a lot of chat by
07:16the contestants on Popmaster, but I went against my own rule there, and I heard someone sing
07:23that at karaoke recently, and it stuck in my head, because it wasn't particularly a
07:29great karaoke song, but it is We Are Detective by the Thompson Twins, so I was delighted
07:35to get that, and that took me up to 30 points.
07:39So the Alanis Morissette question got me to 24, that got me to 30 points, so delighted.
07:45And the last question, the question was, question 10, back to free points, David Dundas had
07:50his only top 10 hit in 1976, with which top 3 song?
07:56So that's David Dundas, what was his only top 10 hit?
08:00The answer was Jeans On, and as I said to Ken on the radio, I've never even heard of
08:05him or that song, but I'd already got what I needed to get, and that was 30 points.
08:13So I got to go through to the 3 in 10, which was delightful, but then I got the 3 in 10,
08:21I say I got the 3 in 10, I got the artist I had to name 3 songs in 10 seconds for, and
08:26it was Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel.
08:30Now this isn't my era of expertise, I don't like people who say that was before I was
08:37born or blah blah blah, things like that, because a lot of things were before you're
08:43born, I'm sure you know it, but anyway, this isn't my era of expertise.
08:47So I managed to suddenly remember Come Up and See Me, Make Me Smile, that was the only
08:53one I got, so I only got 1 in 10, but there are many hits as people keep telling me afterwards,
08:57but there are a lot of people who said they wouldn't have had a clue either, but you had
09:01Judy Teen, Here Comes The Sun, and other songs like that I could have said, but I never would
09:07have got that.
09:08So a really incredible experience, I hope you've enjoyed this video as much as I've
09:14been saying it, I know I've been stuttering over a few bits, but yeah, let us know how
09:19you got on, comment on the Facebook page, comment at the bottom of this story of how
09:25you got on with my questions, I know there's a few people who probably got 39s, a few people
09:31who got a lot less, so yes, it'll be interesting to see how people get on with the questions.
