00:00From CNN, I'm Afol Medike with the 5 things you need to know for Monday, March 24th.
00:08The Atlantic's editor-in-chief says he knew about the U.S. military strikes on Houthi
00:12rebels in Yemen hours before they happened.
00:15In an article published today, Jeffrey Goldberg says the Trump administration accidentally
00:20added him to a group chat on the messaging app Signal, where the attack was being discussed,
00:25among other classified information.
00:27Here's how President Donald Trump responded.
00:30I'm not a big fan of the Atlantic.
00:32To me, it's a magazine that's going out of business.
00:34I think it's not much of a magazine, but I know nothing about it.
00:38CNN's Alex Marcord has more.
00:40You see some of the conversation in the debate, actually, J.D. Vance, the vice president,
00:44is pushing back rather strenuously against this decision to take a strike, saying, I
00:49think we're making a mistake, and others in the conversation, including Pete Hegseth,
00:53the defense secretary, says, well, this actually doesn't have to happen right now.
00:56We can still go ahead with it in a month's time.
00:59They decide to go ahead with this strike, and two hours before it happens on March 15th,
01:04an update was sent to this large group, which, of course, included the journalist Jeffrey
01:09Goldberg by Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, in which he includes information on the forthcoming
01:14strikes, information about targets, the weapons that would be used, and the attack sequencing.
01:20Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is calling for a bipartisan investigation into the matter.
01:26But a key takeaway is from a federal appeals court hearing over the Trump administration's
01:31request to lift a federal judge's temporary block against a wartime authority.
01:35Two members of the three-judge panel pressed both sides on a series of issues central to
01:40the case, including whether alleged members of a Venezuelan gang were denied due process
01:45when they were deported to El Salvador.
01:47Judge Patricia Millett called President Trump's decision to use a wartime power to quickly
01:52deport the migrants, quote, unprecedented territory.
01:55But the Justice Department pushed back.
01:58There were plane loads of people.
01:59I mean, it was also, it's a class action.
02:01There were plane loads of people.
02:03There were no procedures in place to notify people.
02:07Nazis got better treatment under the Alien Enemy Act.
02:10Well, Your Honor, we certainly dispute the Nazi analogy.
02:14Venezuela's government says there's no indication that any of the deported Venezuelan migrants
02:18were part of a gang.
02:20It's unclear how and when the appeals court will rule.
02:24Turkey has detained more than 1,000 protestors after Istanbul's mayor was arrested and sent
02:29to prison.
02:30That's according to the Turkish Interior Minister's post on X.
02:34He also said that more than 120 police officers were arrested in the demonstrations.
02:40Here's Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan.
02:42A country like Turkey has a main opposition party that is too small, too primitive, and
02:52too weak in terms of foresight, vision, and quality.
02:55It has become apparent once again that they could not be trusted to run a country, let
03:01alone local governments, or even a buffet.
03:05Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was Erdogan's most serious rival.
03:10The Trump administration is accusing Columbia University graduate and pro-Palestinian activist
03:16Mahmoud Khalil of willfully engaging in immigration fraud by hiding he works for two agencies
03:21on his green card application, justifying his deportation.
03:25The organizations are the Syria Office of the British Embassy in Beirut and the United
03:30Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA.
03:36American and Israeli politicians have accused UNRWA of spreading anti-Semitism.
03:41Khalil was arrested earlier this month and is being detained by immigration authorities
03:46for his help organizing protests on Columbia's campus last spring, demanding a ceasefire
03:51in Gaza.
03:52The Trump administration initially said Khalil was a threat to U.S. security.
03:56His attorneys called a new justification weak.
04:00Next, Trump taps a new CDC nominee.
04:05Hey, welcome back.
04:09The White House will nominate Dr. Susan Menendez to lead the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
04:13and Prevention.
04:14That's according to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services official.
04:19Menendez is a veteran of government service and was recently the deputy director of the
04:23Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, which carries out innovative high-stakes research.
04:29Earlier this month, the White House withdrew Dr. Dave Weldon's nomination after officials
04:34expressed concerns over his comments about being skeptical of vaccines.
04:40That's all for now.
04:41Join us again at 6 a.m. Eastern.
