Widespread flooding expected across the state.
Transcript
00:00Extensive areas of rain and thunderstorms are leading to widespread flooding across
00:04Queensland and that will continue for several more days.
00:08This video is focused on the short term, Tuesday and Wednesday, where we have high confidence
00:13of upcoming rainfall and we can see which rivers are already starting to experience
00:17flooding.
00:19On our forecast map we see a low to the southwest which is drawing extreme amounts of tropical
00:23moisture across Queensland and it's covering almost the entire state.
00:27It is not just a coastal issue but central and some western districts are bearing the
00:32brunt of the upcoming rainfall.
00:34Many locations have already had over 100mm of rain this week and lots of places that's
00:38over 200mm, meaning upcoming rainfall is on top of what's fallen already, it is falling
00:43onto a saturated landscape.
00:46Here's a look at rainfall between Tuesday and Wednesday, all on one map and we can see
00:50how extensive the heavy falls are going to be.
00:54Through central parts of the state we have the central west, the Maranoa, Warrego, Channel
00:58Country, the northwest and even up towards the Gulf of Carpentaria, all seeing some heavy
01:02falls.
01:04Across the east coast, focus in on the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and the central coast for
01:08heavy falls which may impact Townsville and Mackay in the coming days.
01:12Our severe weather warning is really focused over rain in the centre which is very unusual
01:17for this typically quite dry area and it is a large warning indeed, this entire yellow
01:22area here, we'll hone in to get a bit more detail and see it covers Longreach and most
01:27of the central west as well as down to the south and up to the north and northwest out
01:31towards Mount Isa.
01:33In this warning area we could see another 100mm in the next 24 hours with some locations
01:38potentially topping 150mm, remember this is all on top of the rain you have received already.
01:44With this amount of rainfall upcoming we will see significant weather impacts including
01:49flooding which could have a big impact on the road network, shutting roads, closing
01:53train lines and potentially leading to community isolation if all access routes are shut.
01:59In hilly areas we could see slips and landslides and the upcoming rainfall combined with the
02:03forecast for cool temperatures across Queensland could well put stress on livestock, particularly
02:09young, shorn and low body score livestock.
02:13Rivers are already starting to experience flooding across the state, here's our current
02:18flood warnings and there are a lot of them.
02:20I will bring up here the rivers which are experiencing moderate to major flooding, we've
02:25got the two major flood warnings down here in the south east of this region, the Barkoo
02:29River and the Booloo River with moderate flooding for the Georgina River, the Eyre Creek, the
02:34Cooper Creek and the Thompson River through central Queensland and it might be a little
02:38harder to see so we'll zoom in but we also have moderate flooding just south of Townsville
02:43for the Houghton River.
02:45Outside the current flood warnings there are still flood watches and this is areas
02:49where we could see renewed rises due to the upcoming rainfall stretching right up to the
02:54Gulf of Carpentaria as well as down here into the central south and the Maranoa and Warago
02:59so lots of rivers are likely to be impacted, lots of towns and cities are likely to be
03:04impacted by rainfall and flooding through the week ahead.
03:07So it is a very important week to stay up to date with the forecasts and the warnings,
03:11you can always find the latest info on the Bureau's website and app.
03:14Thanks for watching and do stay safe.
